17-22: HOMECOMING WEEK

Dear Father Lopez Families,

Our campus is bustling with excitement this afternoon in anticipation of our first home football

game tonight. The cafeteria was a sea of green and white at lunch and everyone enjoyed seeing

our mascot, the Green Wave, high fiving and dancing in the courtyard.

Today was a free dress down day. We did this in response to the amazing support and coopera-

tion we have experienced from our students over the past few weeks. They have been in proper

uniform and we have all noticed how great they look. We hope this dress down is the beginning

of many opportunities to show our students how much we appreciate them.

I am personally blessed to witness the teaching and learning that happens every day at Father

Lopez. Each year, Back to School Night is a great opportunity for parents to meet the teachers

and get a window into their students’ daily routine. Back to School Night was very well attend-

ed last night and teachers and parents both expressed gratitude for the opportunity to meet

briefly and go over expectations. The relationship between home and school cannot be under-

estimated. Thank you for working in partnership with us to fulfill our mission to “pursue excel-

lence in the Catholic Tradition”.

Peace be with you,

Leigh Svajko, Principal

Having trouble figuring out how to access your student’s information in Schoology? We’re here to help! Director of Curriculum and Learning, Katelyn Fisher, will host a parent training session in the O’Neill Family Media Center at 6:00 pm on Wednesday, August 29. Handbooks were distributed to students today. Parents, please review with your child and return the signed acknowledgement by August 30!

Parents, if you have not done so already, please begin to educate yourself and talk to your students about the effects of Juuling/vaping. If it

is something you are unfamiliar with, this is becoming extremely popular among high school age students

across the nation. Juul/vapes are a new type of e-cigarette that can contain nicotine or marijuana. The

devices are small enough to fit in a closed fist, and resemble a USB flash drive. These products are highly

addictive; the pods are extremely concentrated (1 pod = 4 packs of cigarettes); they are illegal to have

under the age of 18; and, are attractive to our kids because of the variety of flavors they come in.

In addition to the links throughout this article, please click and read the following: We killed the cigarette.

What we got in return is mango-flavored nicotine in ‘party mode’.

WELCOME BACK EVERYONE!

Your school counselors are looking forward to a great year! Counselors are assigned alphabetically: Mrs. Becky Crowe (Director and assisting students with last initials M-Z) and Mrs. Tina Mathews (assisting students with last initials A-L). Some tips to a successful school year:

Parents

Check grades on RenWeb weekly

Teach your student how to advocate for themselves in the classroom

Students

Do all homework and turn it in ON TIME

Review your notes nightly to avoid cramming information in the night before a test

See your teacher for help if you do poorly on a test to learn from your mistakes

—> SENIORS <— Information to help you with college applications was emailed to

all seniors in July and it is posted in the Guidance Schoology group. Your main resources for college are Naviance and your

school counselor. Counselors will be working to see seniors individually throughout the semester. If a senior would like to

request a meeting sooner versus later, please email your counselor.

After school college application help will be available on Wednesday, August 29 at 1:30 in the O’Neill Family Media Center.

New! NAVIANCE

We will present Naviance, our new college planning pro-

gram in the next few months to all current freshmen, soph-

omores and juniors. We are now using Naviance for all

college related items. If you are a member of the class of

2019 and haven’t created your account you should look

for an email about it. This email would have come to

you between April and June as guidance introduced the system in religion classes.

Students in the classes of 2020, 2021, and 2022 will receive

access to the system through-out the first semester. Please be patient as we give access to the entire school. Parents,

you will have access to the system as too! Please speak with your student to ensure they provide you with your access code after we roll it

out to their class.

COLLEGE ADMISSION REP VISITS

College admission reps will be visiting campus. Students of all ages are permitted to attend the vis-its. These visits will be scheduled and available in Naviance. Students will need to pre-register in Naviance to attend a rep visit. The visits will be scheduled during lunch to permit all students to attend. *Please note: Students attending a rep visit should PACK LUNCH that day so they don’t miss any important information.

Please see the college visits section of Naviance to see who is coming and reserve your spot. If you don’t yet have access to Naviance and would like to hear a specific college admission rep, please speak with your school counselor.
