conƟnued... Holy Week and Seeing with the Eyes of the Soul Dear Epiphany, Holy Week was quite special this year. There seemed to be a congregational attentiveness to the week that was powerful and mysterious, and in this I sense something shift at Epipha- ny. A change has taken place in our common heart that has illuminated our corporate soul. For me, the best symbol of this came Friday night during the Good Friday service. Right in the midst of the sermon and then stretching into the sol- emn collects, the entire church began to shake and rumble as sleet and hail pounded down upon the roof. As I preached a message about God in Jesus gathered on the cross as an inco- herent cry given over to silence… the heavens seemed to pro- test. The play we were acting out seemed to break the heart of God. And while the storm honored our efforts, it also ob- jected to them. It protested our human impulse to kill God on the cross. It protested our supposition that God could ever be silenced. It protested the division we perceive between God’s creation and ourselves. This was a moment of mystery and it was powerful. But the same mystery and power of that rather isolated sleet and hail storm covering all the cars one block around Epipha- ny but stretching no further, was perceived in other ways as well. One of which was the Night Vigil on Maundy Thursday night. From 2 to 3AM, there were ϐive people praying in the Chapel. From 3 to 4AM, there were four people praying in the Chapel, and from 4 to 5AM another four people were praying in the Chapel. In fact, people were in and out of the Chapel all night. One woman noted that last year’s Night Vigil was lone- ly and quiet and beautiful. This year’s was virtually buzzing with the conϐluence of prayer and yet beautiful, as well. Even in its quieter moments the Vigil was a bit noisier by virtue of THE WEEKLY WORD EPIPHANY PARISH OF SEATTLE . APRIL 23, 2012
