ABERCONWY NURSERY PRICE LIST: SPRING 2018

We are pleased to provide you with a copy of our new spring price list. This list cancels all previous lists. We hope that you will find something of interest. We grow alpines & rock garden plants (including some dwarf shrubs, acid loving plants, and ferns) as well as various other interesting plants from time to time. We grow only plants that we like and find interesting, and tend not to be constrained by categories! All of our plants are grown on the nursery site, sometimes in small numbers per variety. As a result the stock situation can change suddenly. Some listed items can sell out quickly and unlisted varieties often become available throughout the year. Most of our plants are offered in 6cm to 9cm pots as appropriate for the needs of the plant. All plants are offered from the nursery subject to their remaining available. We do not supply plants by mail order. However, we will be attending quite a number of Alpine Garden Society, Scottish Rock Garden Club and other shows and can bring plant orders to them, as well as supplying plants from the nursery itself. Please place orders a week or two in advance if possible, by phone, letter or e-mail. There is no need to send payment with the order. Payment will be on collection, at the nursery or at a show. There is a list of the shows we will be attending during the year available on request. Please ask if you cannot find what you are looking for. We have extensive growing areas beyond the sales area, and not all of our stock is out on display to customers at any one time. If you are looking for a number of specific plants in the list, it can save a lot of time if you send your list to us a few days before your visit, so that we can assemble the available plants from the far reaches of the nursery site for you. If you are travelling from a distance to collect specific plants, please ring to check current availability, as some items can sell out very quickly, especially at the start of the season. We have a large, covered 'Alpine Tunnel' with net sides, in which we can grow and display a large number of alpines. This serves to protect the plants (and our customers) from the extremes of wind & rain to which our site is prone, without making the plants 'soft'.

Our regular customers may be surprised to find that at long last they can use an e-mail address to contact us with queries and orders. Imaginatively it is enquiries@aberconwynursery.co.uk. If you would like to receive future lists by e-mail please drop an e-mail to this address to tell us. With a bit of luck, that should make a bit more work for Tim and a bit less for me! Seriously though, you are still welcome to place orders, make enquiries and so on by telephone or letter as usual, which will keep me busy too! A website has also been put in place at www.aberconwynursery.co.uk but we have still to add some significant content. We hope that will follow before too long. Amid all the changes we have had no choice but to make since last July, we have had to re-think our opening hours on the nursery. We will be open Tuesday to Friday 10am-4pm from March to September, but will only be open on occasional Saturdays. Please ring to check if you are hoping to visit on a Saturday. A lot of our propagation was done late last year, and some of our regular offerings have been left out of the list as they aren’t ready yet. Fear not, some absent old friends should be back again later in the year. However, Paraquilegia is back already and there is a lovely crop of Dionysia coming through. There are still a good number of the Gentiana acaulis strain, bred from large flowered cultivars, that I wrote about last year and there are some very good European Primula cultivars, a number of which we haven’t offered for sometime. These include the white flowered P. marginata ‘Casterino’. There are a lot of Iris species looking good and a good crop of Anemone trullifolia , many of which having a good chance of turning out blue. Plants of the late Mike Bramley’s excellent clone of Tecophillia cyanocrocus are looking strong and there are a small number of Erythronium multiscapidium and E. multiscapidium cliftonii for the early birds. These two distinct plants have the most beautiful marked foliage and the elegant creamy yellow flowers backed with red streaks are always the first dogstooth violets to flower with us, already showing bud in the garden in February. We are also offering some plants of our Erythronium revolutum hybrids which we are calling ‘Aberconwy Marbled Group’ . With deep pink flowers with a reddish ring and attractively

marked foliage, these plants have arisen here in some numbers and are close to E. ‘Bryn Meifod’ , ‘Janice’ and other named clonal plants. There are too many to name individually but all are lovely and longer flowering than their E. revolutum Johnsonii Group seed parents. For something different for the rock garden, trough or pan, the diminutive Anthemis cretica ssp. leucanthemoides is well worth investing some effort in. The flowers are relatively large white daisies and enhance the tiny, tight foliage of this unusual small form of a much larger garden species. Easy in the garden, with some skill and TLC it has the potential to make a splendid show plant for early summer. Finally we have Gemma to thank for the lovely pen and ink illustrations that are enhancing this year’s plant list. She produces these when she is not tending her excellent rock garden on the Bodnant terraces. She highlights the red flowered Androsace bulleyana which is on offer this year, along with the irresistible Devil’s Claw, Physoplexis comosa. I particularly like her drawing of Saxifraga cochlearis, one of the best silver saxifrages for trough, rock garden or alpine house. Thank you Gemma. We are offering a number of different clones of S. cochlearis this year amongst an extended list of Silver Saxifrage cultivars. I refreshed and re-propagated our whole range of Silver Saxifrages early last year and have quite a few varieties available that I don’t propagate on a regular basis. Some might not appear again for some time.

HOW TO FIND US

Visitors are welcome on the nursery during opening hours. The nursery is situated on a minor road just off the A470 between Llandudno Junction and Llanrwst, about 1.5 miles north of Bodnant Gardens. The nursery cannot be seen from the main A470. The site commands majestic views towards Snowdonia and the Carneddau. Visitors coming from the A55 Chester to Holyhead expressway should take the exit for the A470 (Junction 19), signposted Betws-y-Coed. Take the A470 through the village of Glan Conwy, past Nev's Garage, set back from the road on your left. Take the next right turn, signposted Graig and Aberconwy Nursery, on to a minor road and turn right again at the top of the hill. The nursery is about 600 metres on your right. Visitors coming from the south through Betws-y-Coed and Llanrwst should take the A470 towards Llandudno and Colwyn Bay. After you see the signs for Bodnant Gardens, take the third turn on the left (signposted Graig and Aberconwy Nursery, the first left turn after the No Entry sign). This left turn is soon after Tal Goed garden centre on your right. Follow the minor road to the top of the hill and turn right. Please be warned that the road to the nursery is a single track road with sharp bends and occasional passing places, and please drive carefully.
