From the Desk of Pastor Amy D Yarnall In July, I will begin my 9th year serving among you here at Wesley.

As I have been reflecting upon our time here, one thing in particular

stands out that I feel is deeply vital and also something I need to

spend more intentional time teaching and preaching. It is practice of

contemplative prayer. This is one of our most ancient practices of the

faith. It is how we stay connected to God, aware of God’s omnipres-

ence, and “pray without ceasing,” as Paul says. The more we practice

this type of prayer, the more our daily awareness of God’s presence

grows. I find Father Richard Rohr to be one of the best teachers of

this way of praying. The following is from the website of his ministry

“The Center for Action and Contemplation.”

“Contemplative prayer, remaining silently and openly in God’s pres-

ence, “rewires” our brains to think non-dually with compassion, kind-

ness, and a lack of attachment to the ego’s preferences.

In contemplative prayer we move beyond language to experience

God as Mystery. We let go of our need to judge, defend, or evaluate,

plugging into the mind of Christ which welcomes paradox and knows

its true identity in God.

During contemplation we come to know that there is no separation

between sacred and secular. All is one with Divine Reality.

Through contemplation we develop the capacity to “witness” our ego-

ic motivations and bring this knowledge into our day-to-day actions,

living with increased freedom and authenticity through this deep

awareness of our self and God’s Self. Fr. Richard Rohr often says that

contemplation is an exercise in failure.

Each time we pray, we come with “beginner’s mind,” true humility,

an openness to not knowing. Even with our best intentions to remain

present to Presence, our habitual patterns of thinking and feeling in-

terrupt and distract. Yet it is the desire that matters, and through our

failing we encounter God’s grace.

Contemplative prayer is a practice for a lifetime, never perfected yet

always enough. Continued on page 2

There are many forms of contemplation such as walking meditation, chanting, centering

prayer, yoga, being in nature, observing breath, creating art, or returning to a sacred

word. … [T]ry a practice and stay with it for some time, making it a regular part of your

day. You may find that one method fits more naturally than others for you.

Two simple practices:

Fr. Richard teaches a simple exercise he learned from a rabbi friend, the YHWH prayer. The

Jews did not speak God’s name, but breathed it. God’s name was the first and last word to

pass their lips. Breathe naturally with mouth open, tongue and lips relaxed, inhal-

ing Yah and exhaling weh.

For an explanation and guide to centering prayer, visit Contemplative Outreach’s website

Wesley United Methodist Women By: Barbara Rafte

Thank You is Not Enough!

Wesley UMW had a very successful bake sale this past Dover Days weekend. To those who assisted us in ANY way, you are appreciat-

ed! We have already voted to use most of the funds toward pur-chasing Bibles for Wesley Preschool graduates. There will be 41

new Bibles placed in the hands of these lucky children and we hope they inspire a lifetime of love for the teachings of Jesus Christ.

On June 8th, some of Wesley’s UMW will head up to Christiana UMC to assist with packing school kits and baby kits for UMCOR. Mary

Ann Dashiell, our Social Action coordinator, has been collecting supplies for these kits over the past several weeks and will com-bine our donations with others around the state on that day. If you

have donated we thank you; if you would like more information, please contact Mary Ann at 302-698-2166, as we will most likely

be going again later in the year. As half the year is just about over, I'd like to thank not only our

members, but our Executive Board who not only serve Wesley UMW, but many other capacities in the church also. They are:

Marylyn Schaeffler, Vice President; Frances Johnson, Program Re-sources; Helene Zeman, Spiritual Growth and Member Nurture &

Outreach; Janet Flower, Education & Interpretation. Circle Leaders are Vicki Stoops & Connie Strickland, Lou Baxter, Mary Ann Evans, Helene Zeman and Frances Johnson.

So then, my dear friends, stand firm and steady. Keep busy always

in your work for the Lord, since you know that nothing you do in the Lord's service is ever useless. I Corinthians 15:58

At the end of April, Wesley’s youth group had a chance to go to Killens Pond with

Christ Church’s youth group for a day of fun and fellowship. We met at Christ Church for a meet and greet, then traveled to Killens Pond. We went on a hike, eat

lunch, and played games. Everyone had a great time. More pictures will be posted outside my office. I’m planning more events with local churches. Stay tuned .

Wesley UMC Music Blessed By God By: Becky Davis, Music Director

As another school year is winding down, another year of music at Wesley Church is finishing as well.

As the The Children’s Choir, The Joyful Noise Bell Choir, The Wesley Church Orchestra and The

Chancel Choir finish their final musical offerings of the year to God, we are reminded of God’s mercy,

provision and blessings to our congregation at Wesley UMC. We can thank God for His part in bless-

ing our congregation with Holy Spirit-filled music to complement our weekly Sunday services, holi-

days and other special occasions in our church. We can also thank our friends and neighbors in the

church who volunteer their time, gifts and energy to prepare and sing and play every week to en-

hance our services. A special thanks to the hard-working and gifted people in the Praise Ensemble

who continue to praise God and lead our worship during the 11:15 am service all year round! The

music ministry at Wesley Church boasts musicians from two years old to ninety-five years. The mu-

sic in our church speaks to our very souls and brings us closer to our God and our Savior. If you

have been blessed or had your own worship of God enhanced by the music at Wesley Church, please

take a minute to thank one of the gracious and generous volunteers who sacrifice their time and en-

ergy to this valuable ministry.

In order to display how hard-working our musicians at Wesley Church are, I have compiled a list of

anthems presented during the 9:45 am service from last September through the end of May. This is

only the list of Chancel Choir anthems. The Bell Choir, Children’s Choir, Praise Ensemble, Orchestra

and individual singers and instrumentalists presented their own lists of music pieces.

Join us for two wonderful retreats this July that will help your mind, body, and spirit be re-

newed in Christ. July 7th starts us off with the Christian Yoga Retreat and the Summer Si-

lent Retreat runs that week through July 12th!

During the Christian Yoga Retreat, come explore how the ancient practice of Yoga can en-

hance your prayer time with God. The scriptures extol the value of meditation and prayer.

Yoga facilitates the opening of our mind and the quieting of our bodies through breath and

easy movement. This retreat is for beginners, as well as those familiar with Yoga. The pro-

gram runs from 2:30 pm–6 pm and the $30 fee includes programming and a light snack. If

you stay overnight at the Silent Retreat, you can attend the yoga retreat for free!

At the Summer Silent Retreat, come experience a daily rhythm of prayer, simple meals,

communing with God in nature, communion, and spiritual direction. Activities such as yoga

(free with at least 1 overnight reservation), canoeing, night walks, and guided prayer or

meditation will be offered during the week at no additional charge. Massage, Healing

Touch, and other body treatments can be purchased during registration or at the retreat.

Cost varies from: $59/person for 1 day; $469/person for 6 days, 5 nights.

All costs include program fees, single occupancy overnight accommodations at the RRC,

and meals from lunch on your first day through lunch on your final day.

For more information and to register, visit our website at

www.pecometh.org/summer-silent-retreat and http://www.pecometh.org/christian-yoga-retreat or by calling 410-556-6900.

Mission Committee Update By: Jim Short & Ray Yarnall, Co-Chairs

The Missions Committee believes ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive' and invites you to serve

those in need. In 2019 we will continue to provide our church family with many opportunities to

share God’s amazing love in our local community. There are short-and-long term opportunities, in-

cluding some that only ask for one hour of your time, give a little or give a lot, but please give what

you can. Serving on mission projects is also a great way to get to know your fellow parishioners and

make new friends.

Missions Endowment – Several years ago the Missions Committee gratefully received an en-

dowment gift to be used for Missions related projects. One purpose of Missions is to send per-

sons into the world to live lovingly and justly as servants of Christ by healing the sick, feeding the

hungry, caring for the stranger, freeing the oppressed and being and becoming a compassionate,

caring presence. Since receiving that gift, enough interest has accrued that the Missions Com-

mittee is now seeking suggestions for local projects. Ideally the project would benefit our com-

munity and involve Wesley UMC volunteers. For example, if a church member needed help with a

handicap ramp, a portion of the endowment may be able to help with that. If you have sugges-

tions as to how this funding could be used in 2019 for Missions, please contact Jim Short @ 302-

270-7535 or Ray Yarnall @ 302-354-5419 or email [email protected].

Community Meal - On the Second Saturday of every month Wesley UMC provides a delicious

meal in a comfortable setting for dozens of men, women and children in our local communi-

ty. Upcoming dates include Saturday June 8th, July 13th, and August 10th, 2019. Please feel free

to stop by and lend a hand. The group generally begins preparation around 10 am and is finished

cleaning up by 1:30 pm. Come out and learn how to do food prep “en masse.” If you would like

to help with preparation, baking, serving, set up, or clean up please contact us

at [email protected]

Wesley Clothing Closet – The clothing closet provides assistance to over 500 adults and 200

children annually at no charge, and is a source of very cost effective clothing for anyone who

chooses to shop there. In 2018 the clothing closet raised $30,000 in 2018 to help our local com-

munity. Way to go, Clothing Closet Crew! ... Help is needed with preparing and sorting do-

nated items during the week, or, provide assistance "on the sales floor" on Saturday mornings.

All proceeds go to help local organizations. Donations of clothing, jewelry, shoes, coats and small

household items can be dropped off at the church in the bins near the kitchen. To help serve in

this ministry, please contact Mary Ann Dashiell at 302-222-5004.

Dover Interfaith Mission for Housing (DIMH) - Your small group is invited to provide a din-

ner meal to the grateful residents of our local Men's shelter located at 684 Forest St, Dover,

DE. To volunteer go to their website www.doverinterfaith.org or call their office at (302) 736-

3600.

Mission Central, Mechanicsburg PA – Mission Central is one of six warehouses that provide

the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), (an organization that provides disaster relief

and humanitarian aid to over 80 countries worldwide), with all of their needed resources used in

disaster response efforts. We will be planning a trip to Mission Central for all age groups this

summer to help support these efforts by preparing emergency kits that are critically needed for

disaster relief efforts. Look for exact dates in the bulletin.

Camp Pecometh – Several members of the Missions Committee recently worked on improve-

ments at the Wesley House at Camp Pecometh. The Wesley House provides living quarters for

Camp Counselors and houses the Camp’s Nurses Station. Recent work included painting the

front porch, cleaning and evaluating floor and foundation work. Additional improvements are

planned for this fall, so feel free to join us. For more information contact us at mis-

[email protected].

Wesley Branches Ann Baker Horsey, Chair

Wesley Branches is making visits and phone calls to those mem-

bers who are unable to attend church or other programs. We are excited to have two new members, Susan Neidig and Katarina

Mahoney. Susan has been active in visiting four of our special friends. Katarina regularly calls all on the list—and that is 20. Each has been a blessing to our group. Long termers Vicki

Stoops and Diane Denbrock are faithful with their visits. Sally Nichols, and of course, Sigrid Mills either visit or make phone calls

on a regular basis. Nancy Franks has helped organize and pre-pare the elements for home communion, a new ministry started on Sunday, May 5th. Penny Gibbs is our faithful treasurer.

We are in the process of organizing the birthday celebration for

our members who are 90-years-old or older. Each has been sent a handwritten invitation. This special event will be held on Sun- day, June 2nd.

Besides visits and calls, cards, food, flowers and small gifts are given to our special

friends. Visits are also made to those in the hospital, with Sigrid Mills, founder of Branches, in the lead and active behind the scenes.

Help Keep Our Church Secure By: Don Knox and Jim Thistlewood

Secure the building after your group has met.

It is our job as good stewards of the church to make sure that the building is secure each day. When your meeting/gathering is over, it just takes a minute to check and see if you are the last in the building. If you are the last group in

the building, please take a walk through the entire building, making sure all lights are off and all doors are properly locked, before setting the alarm.

There is a check list below the alarm panel at the portico and the church entrance door (parking lot side). We are finding that these procedures are not being followed.

Access Cards and alarm codes are not to be used by anyone other than the person they are assigned to. So, please do not share with others.

If you are a member of the staff or committee chair/co-chair and you do not have a code for the alarm, or access card, please see Jim Thistlewood or Michele Dryda to obtain one.

How can you help? Clean up after yourselves. When you have a meeting or a gathering, please make sure you leave the room in order. If

you have brought items into the room from elsewhere, please return them afterwards. If you bring items from the kitchen into a meeting, please return to the kitchen, wash and properly store them. Also, if you had food and the trash receptacle is overflowing, take a minute to tie

the bag off and take it to the dumpster. It just takes a few minutes, and with many helping hands our church can stay clean and uncluttered.
