Summer is nearing its natural end now. The bright fluorescent foliage of early summer has be-come dusty and tired, its optimis-tic exuberance worn down by heat and dry days, battered by winds and storms. Very symbolic. Every time that summer starts, I feel this ridiculous feeling – I think people call it ‘hope’ – and every year, by August, I find myself bemoaning the heat, longing for rain, until it rains, when I be-moan the rain. But I always end up longing for the soft misty drizzles of autumn and the dank scent of toadstools. So this year, as soon as summer began, I dispensed with all that dreadful bonhomie, moaned to anyone that would listen, complained about the very thought of another summer, and generally alien-ated all of my friends by becoming even more cur-mudgeonly than usual. When people smothered in sweat said to me ‘Another fine day’, I grunted. When

sunburnt people said ‘Turned out grand again’, I swore at them beneath my breath. But I’m happy now. Looking forward to staying in when it rains for a fortnight. Dark days of drizzle. Long long nights that give way to a day of fog. Lovely. And then I’ll say to the sweaty and the sunburnt ‘Smashing weather we’re having’. Have a lovely au-

I t begins, rather unpromisingly, at Visp. Rugged grey peaks hem the town in, but these are noth-ing compared to what’s to come. Big express

trains stop here, heading for Geneva or Lausanne. But we’re waiting for the special little train to Zer-matt, which edges out uneasily and rather reluc-tantly. It rattles over roads and rumbles over rails and generally makes the most awful fuss about setting off, but it gets going in the end. Ahead is a seemingly impassable wall of rock, but finally a gap appears and we head up into a valley, climbing slowly at first by viaducts and vineyards until the cogs clunk in and the train starts to climb more steeply.

The valley gets narrower and the mountains taller until the train meets the icy wall of peaks that guard Zermatt. And here it must stop, in the shadow of the Matterhorn, which seems, with its bent top and sharp peak, to peep over every roof and down every lane and across every square, like a nosey keeper jealously protecting its domain from the influx of tourists.

Old wooden chalets squeeze their ancient tim-bers into every available gap in the town, pressing between boutiques and edging between bars, as though eager to glimpse the street. Perhaps they want to see the goats walk through on their way to fresh pastures. Or maybe they just want to breathe the fresh air that wafts down from the glaciers in the evening. Towards the edge of the village, the chalets give way to fields, farmed at first and dotted with old wooden barns, then giving way to forests of conifers. The forests, in turn, fade away the higher we go. Steep open pastures are split by rushing streams and waterfalls. Then these too must make way for rock, and then the rock gets

steeper, and then it is covered in snow, and finally, when ice and glaciers cover everything in sight, a single giant pinnacle of granite shoots upwards and out of the ice, too tall for its own good and bent at the top as though some passing god had kicked it. The Matterhorn dominates every view.

Zermatt itself is about a mile up in the air. There are no cars. The cog railway is the only way in or out for travellers. The village is a curious hotch-potch of barns and chalets centuries old, jostling for space alongside designer boutiques and fondue stublis. Electric carts from the hotels buzz slowly up and down and a herd of black goats commutes daily through the heart of the village.

Off the train, up the valley, hemmed in by moun-tains, cut off from any road, a peaceful sense of isolation takes over. Cable cars, gondolas, funicu-lars and another cog railway make their cautious way up the surrounding mountainsides, to open up walks at higher altitude. But even at 8,000 feet there are forests and grass, paths past waterfalls to lakes with perfect reflections. The Matterhorn tends to dominate the view, here as below, but sometimes it doesn’t hurt to turn away from the bent top and sharp peak and look instead at the other peaks that surround Zermatt.

Dom is the highest mountain that is entirely in Switzerland, and is a perfect triangle, flanked by smaller perfect triangles like children in the family photo (if you have a family of triangles). Monte Rosa is the highest mountain in Switzerland, but it is partly in Italy too. The cols between these peaks, now smooth shoulders of untouched snow, were once rocky passes that the Romans could march through. Conversely, a hundred years ago, the glaciers reached down to nearby villages.

The most popular excursion is by the nineteenth century cog railway that climbs up to a viewpoint at Gornergrat, an observatory that looks across a great glacier to a ring of peaks, from Dom past Monte Rosa and then past all manner of snowy peaks. There are round ones and sharp ones, a couple of little dollops called Castor and Pollux, a massive craggy composition of rocks and ice that is the Breithorn, a windy snowy pass to Italy, and then the Matterhorn of course, elbowing its way into every view like a spoilt child craving attention

When it’s time to leave, and the train makes its return journey to Visp, the smells and sounds of concrete and cars and people come as a shock. You feel like an old time-traveller shot into our present, and a big bit of you yearns for the peace and quiet that you left behind. And there is an irrational jealousy of those who now occupy your hotel room and eat at your table beneath the be-nign gaze of the Matterhorn.

Local Nominee Walks Towards National Awards Recognition

K ing Canute (1016 – 1035) had a standard bearer called Tovi who owned land in the area of Montacute in Somerset. One of

his men had a dream that a great treasure was found in the ground and a dig was organised to see if it could be found. Just where the dream suggested, a cross and other valuables were discovered. They were placed on an oxcart with 12 white oxen. Many holy sites were suggested to the team, such as nearby Glastonbury, and further afield, Canterbury, Winchester, York, etc., but the oxen failed to move. Only when the tiny church of Waltham was mentioned to them did the oxen begin to walk and they continued walking until they arrived at Waltham when they abruptly stopped. The cross was taken from the cart and erected on a tiny church. This was the cross that Harold Godwinson, later to become King Harold, prayed to for relief from his paralysis. In gratitude for his recovery, a larger church was built on the site and consecrated on Holy Cross Day, 1060. A college was also founded at the site. Prior to his death at the Battle of Hastings, Harold prayed at this church. Eventually, due to pilgrimages arriving at the church, it grew in size but during the Dissolution of the Monasteries, much of the church was destroyed and this cross was lost.

A memorial re-enactment of the the missing miraculous Holy Cross of Waltham takes place each year in Waltham Abbey. Volunteers and attenders are needed to make the re-enactment a success. This event is a special celebration of miracles, healing, revival and community cohesion. This year, Holy Cross Day is celebrated in Waltham Abbey on Fri 13th Sept and Sat 14th Sept when representatives from the

Abbey church, the Town Council, Waltham Abbey Historical Society and King Harold’s Day, present this event. Holy Cross Day commemorates the finding of the cross upon which Christ is said to have been crucified by St Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine. There will be a service at the Church at 2pm to which everyone is invited. The bell-ringers will ring a Quarter Peal in the evening with a walk to remember Tovi the Proud and his 66 followers, who brought the Holy Cross to Waltham in 1035. Bells will also ring in Montecute on this day in celebration. A walk takes place from the Lee Valley White Water Centre to the Abbey, where "pilgrims" will be received as they would have been in medieval times, and the Cross will be installed in the Abbey by candlelight.

E ssex County Council Trading Standards team is calling on Essex residents to look out for their family, friends and neighbours to ensure they

don’t become a victim of rogue doorstep traders. Rogue doorstep traders can be extremely persua-

sive and they often target elderly and vulnerable peo-ple.

A commonly used tactic is to tell the resident that there is something quite basic wrong around their home and once employed, they then continue to find things wrong and the price for the work starts to rise.

The work is often unnecessary, charged at grossly over-inflated prices, poorly done and in some cases the trader will charge for work that hasn’t been com-pleted. They can become aggressive if questioned.

Cllr Roger Walters, Cabinet Member for Trading Standards, said: “Rogue doorstep traders target the most vulnerable in our communities. They can be very convincing and it is easy to be taken in. Our Trading Standards officers work hard to prevent incidents before they occur, however we are asking Essex resi-dents to also look out for their vulnerable friends, family and neighbours. We would urge people to recognise the risk of buying services from people who call at their door and look to recommended traders instead.”

Tips on staying safe from rogue traders: Never agree to have work carried out on your

house or garden by anyone who knocks at your door.

If you need work carried out on your property you can ask family, friends or neighbours to recommend reputable businesses.

Try to use a Buy with Confidence business (via 08454 040506 or www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk) They have been audited and approved by Trading Standards.

It is always best to get two or three quotes from reputable traders which you can consider in your own time without pressure.

Don’t be embarrassed or worried if you have been caught out by a rogue doorstep trader, Trading Standards can help just call 08454 040506.

HAVE FUN LEARNING TO PLAY BRIDGE Ray Green invites you to join the East London Bridge Club. Last October I decided to join one of Ray’s bridge courses to try it for myself. I know a few people who play bridge and find it a stimulating and sociable game. I had also interviewed Ray for the articles in The Chingford Directory for 2011 and 2012. The article also appeared in The West Essex Directory in 2012.

There were about 12 new players when I joined and Ray started us off with games of mini bridge progressing to bridge. I found the lessons were well planned and challenging and Ray gave us lots of mate-rial to follow up each lesson. It was fun learning with others and there was always plenty of support and encouragement from Ray and the other players. This is what Ray said,

“Bridge is a trick taking game of skill and chance played by four players who form two partnerships; the partners sit opposite each other at the table.

Bridge can be a lifelong pursuit and a learning process that never ends. It can be exciting, challeng-ing, frustrating but never boring.

It is a social card game that includes strategy, trust and teamwork. You can develop friendships with others who are learning and already playing bridge. It is also a great way to sharpen your memory and exercise the brain.

Once you have learnt the basics of bridge you are able to practice with friends. The only cost is a cou-ple of packs of cards and the tea and biscuits.

From Monday 21st October I shall be giving eve-ning lessons from 7.30 – 9.30 pm. These will be on every Monday except Christmas and bank holidays.

I am offering a 32-lesson course that will cover all aspects of this interesting game and help you to be ready to play in one of the many local bridge clubs.

Each 2-hour lesson including a tea/coffee and bis-cuit break is £10 per person. You only pay for the lessons you attend and will be given the opportunity to cover missed lessons on a later course. On these lessons you will be partnered with another member of the class. You are of course welcome to join with one or more friends and learn in a relaxing, comfort-able home environment.

Later in this course I also offer supervised bridge play. These are 2-hour play sessions on Wednesday afternoons 2.30-4.30 pm and on Thursday evenings 7.30-9.30 pm.
