Dear parents and caregivers, It was great to see all the smiley happy student faces on Tuesday. By all reports everyone enjoyed the break and the weather was certainly warm for this time of year. Term 2 Welcome back to another busy and exciting term 2. This term is ten weeks in length and there will be a public holiday in week 7 on June 10. Every term is busy and full of learning opportunities and celebrations for our learning community. Please keep an eye on the school calendar to ensure you don’t miss out on a thing. Mother’s Day Open Classrooms

This year to celebrate Mother’s Day we will be inviting all mums, aunts, grandmothers and carers to spend time in the classrooms between 9:15am-10:00am on Friday 10 May 2019. During this time you will be invited to engage in an activity with your child. If you have more than one child you will be able to share your time between classes. We look forward to seeing you there. Ramadan Mubarak

Ramadan Mubarak to all families observing Ramadan this month.

High Achievers Morning Tea

On Tuesday the High Achievers Morning Tea was held in the hall. This event celebrates the high academic or leadership achievements of students across the school. Thank you to all the families who attended this celebration. Smithfield Fire & Rescue NSW Open Day 2019 Winter is just around the corner so it’s a great time to visit your local Fire & Rescue NSW Fire Station and learn more about how to be home fire safe. In an effort to educate the community about fire prevention and safety, Fire & Rescue NSW is hosting its annual Open Day on Saturday 18 May 2019 between 10.00am and 2.00pm. You and your family are invited to visit your local station at Smithfield, 875 The Horsley Drive, for home fire safety tips, hop on a fire truck and chat with firefighters to learn more about what they do every day. From chemical spills, car accidents and natural disasters to education, prevention and humanitarian relief, across the state, across the country and even overseas, our firefighters are prepared for anything, anywhere, anytime. For more information, visit www.fire.nsw.gov.au. Make sure you mark it in your diary and come and join us on the day. Resurfacing School Grounds - apologies for any inconvenience

Work is continuing across the school to resurface the school grounds. The new softfall areas will not only protect students from the current hard surfaces but also add some bright colours and engage students in a variety of games and activities. Contractors have completed work between J and K Blocks and have moved to the Kindergarten Quadrangle. Work will continue in other areas of the school once the Kindergarten Quadrangle is complete.

FWPS ANZAC Assembly A commemorative ANZAC day ceremony was held last term for our school community. Thank you to: Mr Hunter from Smithfield RSL who addressed our community; the school choir (comprising of students and staff) that performed two very moving items; our Captains/Vice-Captains and Lachlan Weekes who conducted a truly wonderful assembly. It was fitting to honour so many people who have community links during this Assembly. All students were extremely well behaved and respectful. Thank you to the parents who attended and those who generously donated flowers to mark this occasion. NAPLAN

From 14 to 16 May, the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy will be completed by all year 3 and 5 students in all government and non-government schools. The results of the tests will provide important information that will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive reports indicating their child’s level of achievement. School Gates

All school gates are on an automatic system. This means every gate is on a timer to open and close at specific times during the morning and afternoon. The gates will open at 8:15am and staff will be on duty to supervise students from 8:30am. This means there will be no access to the premises before 8:15am.

Please ensure your children do not arrive before 8:15am. Mother’s Day Stall

Thank you to Jo Kebblewhite and Sandra Spurway who once again organised the Mother’s Day Stall. This enables our students to make their dearly loved mothers feel special on the day. Staff learning

Not only do the students spend their days learning, but so do all the staff at FWPS. Over the past two weeks staff members have participated in the following professional learning opportunities:

Two full days Building Mathematics Leadership – two Instructional Leaders, two Assistant

Principals and one Interventionist.

One full day External Validation - Principal

Full day Quality Teaching Rounds – four teachers

Half Day Language, Learning and Literacy for stage 1– one Assistant Principal and three

teachers.

Instructional Leader Masterclass – two Instructional Leaders and two teachers.

All staff professional learning ensures that the highest quality of education is provided to all students at FWPS. Happy Mother’s Day!

Super Stars of 5V in Term 2!

5V have made a great start to the term, having arrived back from the break

with enthusiasm! This term in 5V we will be looking at some wonderful texts in

our reading groups with a cultural theme, allowing us to understand and take

interest in children from all over the world.

Mathematics will be very exciting this term because we have made a

commitment to include some physical activity in our mathematical learning.

This week we learned about data, and data collection. After a very interesting

lesson where we created bar graphs and pie graphs, we took the lesson to the

back oval and collected data about our physical activity!

We have such a busy term coming up, including NAPLAN in week 3!

Student Learning

Students in 4H have started off the year well and

have settled into routine. They are excited to be

learning new things in the classroom and are very

enthusiastic. They are welcoming and love

staying busy with a variety of different activities

across all Key Learning Areas.

We are currently reading Weirdo by

Anh-Do. Our goal is to complete all

of the series.

We also love to stay active in 4H,

taking part in the Parramatta Eels NRL clinics and look forward to the

Premier Sporting Challenge.

New Recycling Program

Fairfield West Public School has now started an exciting recycling initiative designed to not only help our most precious environment, but at the same time earn money for the school. FWPS have had two special orange bins delivered which have been placed in Area 4 (near the Hall) and Area 5 (Senior Quad). By placing such items as empty cans, poppas, plastic water and soft drink bottles in these bins the school will earn 10c for each deposit. When these bins are completely filled the Prestons Container Deposit Centre will come to the school and empty them. The school will be refunded according to how many containers are found in the bins. We would like to encourage the children at the school and members of the school community to support us with this project and help to Return and Earn. Items can be brought from home and deposited in these bins, along with those that are purchased at the school canteen. We will update the school community on our progress with this initiative as the year goes on.

Election Day Barbecue Thanks for all of your support for our Year 6 fundraising through Frozen Fridays. We will take a break due to the cooler weather and resume in term 4. Our next Year 6 fundraiser will be on Election Day (Saturday 18 May) when we will be selling sausage sandwiches for $2 and soft drinks/water for $2. Please

support our fundraising by purchasing from our stand outside the hall between 10am and 1pm when you come to vote.

Assyrian Story Time On Thursday 30 May, Ms De Horta and Ms Caroline Isaac will be hosting Assyrian Story Time after

school in the library. If you would like to come along together with your child to experience the magic of reading and have some afternoon tea with other parents/caregivers and children, you are most welcome to attend. Assyrian Story Time is a free event which will commence at 3:15 pm and finish at 4:15 pm. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Stewart House Stewart House bags went home today. Please fill these bags with any clothes that no longer fit so they can be donated to children in need. Please return the filled bags to the landing outside of the KL classroom before 28 May as Stewart House will collect the donations on 29 May.

Fair Discipline Code In term 1, year 2 was the overall winning grade for our new Fair Discipline Code award system. Students received a free sausage sizzle BBQ lunch as their reward.

ANZAC Day Anzac Day is one of the most important national occasions in Australia, marking the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand armed forces during World War One. Every year, Fairfield West Public School commemorates the event with an Anzac Ceremony. This year we held the ceremony on Friday the 12 April, 2019 and Mr Robert Hunter from Smithfield RSL joined us to pay tribute and remember those who have served. In honour of all of the thousands of Australians who have served our country during times of conflict every class placed flowers around the flag pole to remember all the soldiers and their families.

devices from the App Store for iPhones or Google Play for smartphones. Our teacher librarian will hand out purchased books to students once orders arrive. If you would like to purchase items from Book Club and you’re not sure how, Mrs De Horta will be more than happy to assist any parent/caregiver after school in the library. Orders are due in by Friday 17 May 2019.
