The West: Texas RevolutionIn 1810, Father

Miguel Hidalgo y Castilla rallied 80,000 poor native and mestizos in a revolt against the Spanish authorities. This marked the beginning of the Mexican Revolution against Spain. Father Miguel died, but after 11 years, Mexico gained independence.

The West: Texas RevolutionSince Mexico

gained independence from Spain in 1821, the region of Texas was part of Mexican Territory. Mexico provided land for anyone who would settle areas of Texas. This invitation brought many Americans to the region.

The West: Texas RevolutionMexico hired

land agents called Empresarios to recruit settlers to the Texas territory. Empresarios were given free land for their recruitment efforts. However, rules were in place for all settlers. One of those rules was that slavery was not allowed.

settlers that were coming to Texas were already owners of slaves in the United States, they often brought their slaves with them, in defiance of Mexican laws and regulations.

Austin was one such Empresario that brought slave-owning settlers. Squatters were also settling on the land without permission. These circumstances resulted in the Mexican government banning American settlers in 1830.

The West: Texas RevolutionAmericans now

living in Texas were numerous, and after the Mexican ban on future settlement, they declared independence from Mexico and wrote a constitution (modeled after the U.S. Constitution) for the newly declared Republic of Texas.

The West: Texas RevolutionFighting began

in 1836 after Texas declared Independence. One major battle happened at the Alamo near San Antonio Texas. It was a Catholic Mission turned into a fort. The Texans defended the Alamo but were overrun after days of fighting.

took place at the Battle of Goliad. Again, Mexican forces were victorious. At both the Alamo and Goliad, Mexico executed all of the surrendering survivors.

Sam Houston rallied more Texans to attack the Mexican army, led by General Santa Anna. while it camped near San Jacinto. Santa Anna had foolishly separated his forces to pursue the Texans.

were defeated in just 18 minutes at the Battle of San Jacinto. In his pre-battle speech, Houston reminded the Texans of what happened at the Alamo and of the slaughter at Goliad. Their battle cry was: “REMEMBER THE ALAMO! REMEMBER GOLIAD!”

forced General Santa Anna to sign the treaty which granted Texan Independence and recognized Texas as a sovereign nation. Santa Anna had no choice but to cooperate.
