The West Side Presbyterian Church

Easter Sunday Celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord

The Sacrament of Holy Communion

April 16, 2017 8:45 am and 11:15 am Services

He said to me, “Mortal, can these bones live?'“ I answered, “O Lord, God, you know.'“ Then He said

to me, “Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath

in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the Lord.” -Ezekiel 37:3-6

But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, taking the spices that they

had prepared. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in, they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling

clothes stood beside them. The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead,

He is not here, but has risen.” -Luke 24:1-5

Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from

Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were

kept from recognizing Him. -Luke 24:13-16

When He was at the table with them, He took bread, blessed, and broke it, and gave it to them.

Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight. They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while He was talking to us on the

road, while He was opening the scriptures to us?" -Luke 24:30-33

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in Him all things in heaven and

on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers - all things have been created through Him and for Him. He himself is before all things,

and in Him all things hold together. -Colossians 1:15-18

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God of all hope and joy, we confess that we continue to live in fear. You raised Jesus to new life, yet we hold onto former things. You offer salvation to all, yet we fail to share this good news. Forgive us, God of grace. Open our hearts to receive your word, and feed us with the bread of life, the life that death cannot destroy; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

*RESPONSE OF FAITH Colossians 1:15-20

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; for in Him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers - all things have been created through Him and for Him. He Himself is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; He is the beginning, the first born from the dead,

*GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Blessed are You, O Lord our God:

Your love is everlasting; Your faithfulness will never die. You have extended the promise of salvation to all through Christ Jesus, who is risen from the dead.

Therefore we praise You, joining the song of the universal church and the heavenly choir:

*SANCTUS (choir and congregation singing)

Blessed is Jesus Christ, our Savior:

Early on the first day of the week, Jesus’ disciples went to His tomb, only to find it empty. There they discovered that He had risen indeed.

Remembering Your goodness and grace, we offer ourselves to You with gratitude as we share this joyful feast.

Through the Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Spirit, we bless You, God of glory, now and forever.

Our worship has ended. May our service to God and others continue.

Greeters: We thank Terry Erzmoneit and John Hahn, and Sally Clark and Jan Lescroart for greeting today. Procession of Worship Elements: The worship elements are being carried in this morning by members of the Senior High Choir. Lay Leadership: If you are interested in being a lay reader during the 10 am Sunday service, please contact Lucy Ianacone ([email protected]; 201-445-6824).

Sanctuary Flowers: The Sanctuary flowers are given in loving memory of Gary R. Kollar, Bob R. Kollar, and Helen B. Mueller, by Rose Marie Kollar. Requesting Sanctuary flowers is a wonderful way to remember a loved one or a special occasion. If you wish to dedicate flowers, please call Russell Clark (201-444-5189). Coffee Hour: Please stay after the service to enjoy fellowship and refreshments in the Narthex. We thank today’s Coffee Hour hosts Caroline and John Barr, and Angela and John Gutekunst for their hospitality. Hospitality Training: All greeters and coffee hosts are encouraged to meet after coffee hour on Sunday, April 23 in the large choir room for hospitality training. Pastor Penny and Erik Khoobyarian will share ideas on how to become more welcoming. Lunch will be served. Please RSVP to Caroline Barr ([email protected]; 201 978-8225). The bulletin cover is the art work of Laura Rogers Vriesema. The covers bring us the message of Holy Week through the panels for Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. On today’s cover, the trumpeting lilies express the joy of Easter morning. All are bound together with a screen of crosses, the symbol of God’s sacrificial love. Visitor Information Packets are available in the Narthex. If you are visiting with us today, please feel free to take one.

12

The Paschal Candle: The early Christian church’s calendar began and ended with Pascha: the English transliteration of both the Greek and Hebrew words for Passover. For them, Pascha signified the great deliverance accomplished in the Lord’s new Passover. The Paschal Vigil (on the eve of Easter) celebrated the promise of new life, of forgiveness of sins, and of Christ’s victory over death. The lighting of the Paschal candle symbolized Christ passing through darkness into light; the Christ Candle returning at the end of our Service of Tenebrae is reminiscent of this. The Paschal Vigil would conclude in the early hours of Easter morning, with the assembled faithful gathering at the table to celebrate the Lord’s Supper. For us today, Easter (Pascha) is the central event - the time of transformation, of becoming a resurrection people. During the last prelude, Richard Strauss’ powerful Solemn Entry, set for brass, timpani, organ, and bells, our Paschal Candle will be lit and brought forward to its stand, where it will be lit for all services through Pentecost. As the Paschal Candle is brought forward, and as we gather at the Lord’s table, may we, with Christians of every time and place, remember that Christ is the Light of the world! Thanks be to God!

Thanks to the generous craftsmanship of Jack Gardner, we also have a Paschal Candle and stand for use in worship services in Pulsifer Chapel.

Like its counterpart in the Sanctuary, its base is the Advent wreath stand, transformed for use in the season of Easter.
