RECONCILIATION WEEK Last week we celebrated National Reconciliation Week with the theme ‘More than a word’, focusing on turning our words into actions. 2021 marks twenty years of Reconciliation Australia and almost three decades of Australia’s formal reconciliation process. National Reconciliation Week celebrates the relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and all other Australians. Every year, the week is held between the same dates, 27 May to 3 June. The dates draw attention to significant historical events. The 27 May marks the day in 1967 when the referendum was passed for the Australian Government to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and to allow them to be recognised in the census. The 3 June marks the day in 1992 that led the Australian Government to recognise native title and acknowledge Indigenous Australians as the original occupants of Australia. Thank you to our Year 6 Aboriginal students who led us through our assembly and Mr Adrian Baxter who was our special presenter. Mr Baxter opened our assembly with a smoking ceremony and also spoke to the Kindy students about our Bogong Dreaming Garden and its significance. All students participated in a week of events including learning about Sorry Day on the 26 May and Mabo Day on the 3 June. Students participated in many activities including Indigenous games and a reconciliation walk at school where they completed activities such as weaving and learning how to build and maintain positive relationships with all. Queanbeyan West also participated in the Queanbeyan Reconciliation Walk on the 1 June where we were able to celebrate with the rest of the community. Two of our students participated in the ceremonial opening. Great work Killarney and Darius! Thank you to all who attended and a big thanks to our Aboriginal Education team for creating such a fabulous week.

IDEAS FOR SPENDING MONEY Each year the P&C works with our school and community to set small and large goals for spending the money we raise. In the past 12 months, the P&C has provided money for:

New laptops for the classrooms New sports equipment for the junior

and senior playgrounds Each classroom to purchase its own

resources Each child to participate in the Count Us

In music program

We will be setting aside some time at our meeting on 27th July to discuss our next set of goals and we would love as much input from our community as possible. If you have an awesome idea or suggestion for how we should use the money we raise (or even a way to raise more) it’s time to put your thinking cap on! Technology? Sporting equipment? Something for the library? A community event? We want to hear any ideas, no matter how big or small! We’ve also asked Mrs Jamieson to bring along ideas from the teachers and support staff. To share your ideas, simply send an email [email protected]. We will compile the responses and table them for discussion at the meeting on 27th July. All parents, carers, community members and teachers are welcome to come along to this meeting to be a part of the discussion.

CHOCOLATE FUNDRAISING The P&C is coordinating a Cadbury Chocolate Fundraiser. You can pre-purchase a box of chocolates to sell in your workplace, to family members, or to just eat yourself! Boxes available are: Goody Box (contains Twirl, Cherry Ripe,

Twirl Breakaway, Moro, Dairy Milk) - $60 Europe Bars Box (contains Summer Roll
