I sit here, pen and paper in hand and I’m searching for colorful words to describe the ‘Whimsical WInter’ issue, but the only words I feel a NEED to say at this moment are “ BLACK LIVES MATTER.” Yes, I believe that we were all carefully crafted by God himself, and science proves that we all bleed red, but life has proven that those born with darker pigments are the only ones born with targets on their flesh. I hope that this issue can bring you joy, even though times haven’t been so joyful lately. I hope this issue can be your escape from a world filled with injustices, and I pray that no matter your skin’s hue, cultural background, or social status, that each page can inspire you to shine your light in this dark world. My heart has grown heavy, because I wonder if there will ever be a day where we are all treated as equals... Rest in peace Eric Garner, Michael Brown, and Tamir Davis. While your deaths, and the injustices concerning them may have broken many hearts, they’ve opened up so

many eyes to the racial issues that still exist, and they’ve united people of di!erent creeds across the globe. Your deaths certainly weren’t in vain.

May we all continue to move in peace and with love.

XOXO, D’mani DeVoe

2. Go ice-skating! To kick the fun up a notch grab your friends and pretend youʼre in Beyonceʼs “Blow” video.

3. FOOOOOD FIGHT! Just kidding, but if youʼre a big foodie gather some friends for a cooking face-off.

Page 15: The Whimsical Winter issue

4. Get intouch with your creative side! Grab some paint, and create magic, to kick the fun up a notch, while being cost-friendly head to groupon for an awesome deal at “Sip-N-Strokes.”

5. Host an ugly sweater party, who ever doesnʼt come in a sweater gets silly-stringed or has to wear their name taped to their back, and every time someone says it they have to drink.

6. Embraace nature. Gather your friends and rent a cabin in the mountains for some well needed relaxation.

Fun Tips From Yonce:Besides being stuck in our head for days, one thing 7/11 did for us, was showed us how to

have FUN. What says fun more than dancing around a hotel in undies with your girls, right? With the holidays often comes a well needed break, use that break to kick it with the girls

and let loose at a sleep over!

It’s the most whimsical time of the year. The air has come to a

cool calm, and the birds have flown south. Scents of peppermint now linger, and faces are plastered with smiles. Frost, the frost embraces the tips of the grass that was once green, brushing against the rims of our boots as we walk in the morning. Families once bounded by school, work...life, are now reunited. The skies are painted in subtle hues, and the bark of the trees are a pale ebony. It’s almost as if a touch of magic seeped into all of our hearts. The lights, the bells, the music...What a whimsical work of art. During a time this beautiful our wardrobes must reflect, and play the part. For those of you who are lost in style, we’ll show you where to start. Enjoy your journey on this Whimsical Winter with us.

ART

The Art Guillory22-year-old visual artist, Sage

Guillory allows us to explore the mind behind the masterpieces in

this Q&A.

Q. Where are you from?A. I was born in Opelousas, Louisiana. I was raised

in East Atlanta, Ga.

Q. How long have you been drawing?A. I've been drawing as far back as I can remember.

My mom says since 8 months, but I'm not really sure.

Q. The majority of your pieces seem to have a lot of intricate details; What do you call your style of artwork, and when did you decide you wanted to venture into this realm of art?A. I don't really know what my style of art is, and I don't want to categorize it right now. Because who knows, my art may look completely di!erent in the next year. I don't want to get comfortable with what I'm doing, because then how could I advance? But I do know I've always drawn from a dark place with light.

Q. What would you say inspires your work? Do you ever find yourself uninspired or with the case of “artist block”; if so what for you to gain inspiration?A. Innovation and the idea of progression is the foundation of what inspires me. I do get uninspired often. When I do it's takes me a minute to realize it. When I do I just change my environment. I listen to a di!erent type of music, watch documentaries on weird shit. Really anything that I haven't been doing lately.

what inspires me.”Artist Sage Guillory in photo above; Salvador

Page 47: The Whimsical Winter issue

Q. Who are some artists that influence you?A. Salvador Dali, Alphonse Mucha, Pablo Picasso, and me.Q. Do you have any pieces that you are most proud of? If so, why?A. Nothing in particular, I'm not too attached to my art because I'll be creating forever and it's meant to share.Q. What would you say is your most important artistic tool? What is something that you think you absolutely could not live without art wise?A. My most important artistic tool? That would definitely have to be the 0.5 Micron pen.Q. You recently attended this years Art Basel in Miami; How was that experience for you? What would you say you took away from that experience?A. Art Basel was awesome man. There was nothing but love out there. The whole time I was receiving signs that I was supposed to be where I was, and I'm on the right track. But being in Miami and seeing all the art. It's time for me to really do what I want to do with this art thing.

“I'll be creating forever and it's meant to share.”

Page 48: The Whimsical Winter issue

Q. Are there any other genres with in fine arts that inspire your work? I.E. film, music, photographyA. My friends really inspire me through their music and creations. But really nothing besides that Most of my true inspiration comes from within, or just past experiences. Even future experiences."

"Q. What advice would you give to people that have a passion for art, but are hesitant about pursuing it?A. If you have a true passion, a true itch to create, do that shit. Don't let anyone tell you any di!erent. Once you know for sure who you are and what you want to create, and what your purpose, no one can come in between you and the destiny you've created."

Q. All in all, art is simply a creative tool to send a message to the world; What message do you hope to send with your art work?""A. With my art I just want to spread light and positivity. And show people that whatever they want it's theirs. They just have to believe it."

Music Must-Haves

Singer/song-writer Kelela released her debut album, ‘Cut 4 Me’ in 2013. While the album is a year old, the sounds are timeless. Kelela’s soothing voice lays over synth beats, reminiscent of the 80’s. If you haven’t already, treat your ears to her music.

KELELA

With her airy voice and emotion-gushing lyrics, Banks will send you into a musical rabbit hole. Every ounce of emotion and pain is poured over experimental beats...Trust once you enter the rabbit hole sheʼs created, youʼl never want to leave.

BANKS

Ms.Taylor’s debut album ‘VII’ is a breath of fresh air to RnB.The album is certainly reminiscent of the classic 90’s sound. Her airy voice is amazing as it glides over erotic beats. This album is the definition of sexy, and to top it all o!, her live performances are perfection!

Teyana Taylor

FKA TWIGS

Her lyrics are risque, and the visuals just as risky...AND WE LOVE IT! There is no holding back with Ms.Twigs, Her music and visuals are pure, unadulterated art, and they certainly push the envelope. With songs like ‘Pacify‘ and her video ‘Two Weeks’ this eclectic artist is creating a lane all her own.
