Passion fruit is a tropical vine, native to SouthAmerica and being cultivated commercially in mostpart of tropicalandsubtropicalareas for its sweet-sour, aromatic fruit pulp for fresh consumption aswell as juice making. Wide variability has beenobserved for sweetness of pulp. The fascinatingpassionflower types exhibitmost beautiful flowerparts comprising ornamental types too, attracts pollinating insects to the growing garden thereby aiding all othercomponent crops in a cropping system.Passion fruits areroundoroval, attractive yellow/ red/ purple/ greencoloured, shiny peel. The fruits are soft to firm, interior filled with juicy pulp embedded with numerous seeds. The fruit pulp isconsumed either fresh or used for juice making. The juice is added to other fruit juices to enhance aroma and taste. The characteristic aroma of the pulp makes the consumer to feel consuming many other fruits. The ripe pulpprovides good number of calories and contains dietary fibre, vitamins, and minerals. The climate of Andaman andNicobar Islands is suitable for commercial cultivation of passion fruit as component crop in plantation based croppingsystems or in home gardens or in community gardens on fences, terraces etc. Passion fruits requires very less careand could be easily grown in the islands with minimum requirement of inputs. In pandals and trellis system, the fruityield is observed to be higher. Year-round fruiting will give the additional income for the island farmers. Observationsrevealed that the passion fruit types (purple and light-yellow peel) conserved at ICAR-CIARI commence firstflowering in about 9 to 12 months and recorded almost year-round production of fruits on pandals and on fences. Theyield ranges from 50 to 150 fruits per vine in the first year and subsequently higher depending on the growing status.Systematic cultivation of passion fruit in our islands could improve the production and marketing of fruits forconsumption and value addition. The availability of passion fruit products would enhance nutritional security amongthe island communities. ICAR-CIARI has conserved passion fruit plants and regularly multiply and sell the plantingmaterial to the needy farmers.Benefit: The climate and soil in the whole of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is highly suitable for passion fruitproduction. Diversification of island agriculture through crops such as passion fruit would improve the profitabilityfrom unit area and ensure nutritional security in remote places.Contact person with Name, Designation e-mail and phone no: Dr. B. it has been ensured that they can work with security roundthe clock. He said India has ensured 26 weeks of paidmaternity leave for career women, a feat that even manydeveloped nations could not achieve. Similarly, the PrimeMinister listed the measures by the Government for trans-genders, children and nomadic and semi-nomadiccommunities. Recalling the inspired performance of the para-athletesin the recent Paralympics, the Prime Minister said that inrecent years laws have been enacted for the Divyang Jan.They have been connected to new facilities. Buildings arebeing made, divyang friendly and language for divyang is beingstandardized. Shri Modi said that during the pandemic, poor, helplessand senior citizens were given direct financial support in theiraccount. Migrant labourers were spared much hassle due tothe implementation of the One Nation-One Ration Card. The Prime Minister cautioned against the selectiveinterpretation of human rights and using human rights todiminish the image of the country. He said of late, some peoplehave started interpreting human rights from their own angleas per their selfish interests. Tendency to see infringement inone situation and not in a similar situation has damaged humanrights a great deal, he said. He also said that the biggestinfringement of human rights takes place when they are seenfrom the prism of politics and political profit and loss. "Thisselective behaviour is equally damaging for democracy too",cautioned the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister said that it is important to understandthat human rights is not associated with rights only but is asubject of our duties too. Saying "rights and duties are twotracks on which the journey of human development and humandignity takes place, he stressed that duties are equallyimportant as rights and they should not be discussedseparately as they complement each other. The Prime Minister concluded by mentioning the humanrights of future generations. He emphasized that with measureslike International Solar Alliance, renewable energy goals andHydrogen Mission, India is rapidly moving in the direction ofsustainable life and eco-friendly growth.
