THE WINDIER CITY: The Dodgers overcame heavy winds in
yesterday’s contest in the Mile High City to record their first win
on the road, as they beat the Rockies 10-6 to avoid their first
sweep of the season. Los Angeles continues its first road trip of
the season as they take on the World Champion Chicago Cubs in
a rematch of the 2016 NLCS for a three-game series at Wrigley
Field. Following the conclusion of their six-game road trip (1-2),
the Dodgers return home for a six-game homestand, when they’ll
take on the D-backs and Rockies.
After scoring 10 runs in yesterday’s contest, the Dodgers
have now recorded double-digit runs in three games in
2017, which is two more than any other big league club.
Los Angeles ranks second in the Majors in runs scored
(40) and run differential (+18), only behind Arizona’s 48
runs and +19 run differential.
The Dodgers lost the 2016 series against the Cubs, 3-4,
including a 1-3 mark at Wrigley Field. The teams also
met in the NLCS, which was won by the Cubs, 4-2.
Los Angeles has won 10 of its last 16 regular-season
games at Wrigley Field and its .625 winning percentage
at Chicago tops NL clubs since 2013.
THE MEN IN THE PEN: Dodger relievers had their consecutive
scoreless innings streak snapped at 16.2 innings in yesterday’s
contest, after closer Kenley Jansen allowed two runs in the ninth
inning, but continue to top National League bullpens with a 1.61
combined ERA (4 ER/22.1 IP). The bullpen, which ranked second
in the Majors in ERA (3.35), opponents’ batting average (.221)
and WHIP (1.16) in 2016, looks to once again be a team strength
and also leads the NL with a 0.76 combined WHIP and an 8.33
strikeout-to-walk ratio, striking out 25 (T-3rd NL) against just
three walks. The bullpen has limited opponents to a .195 batting
average (16-for-82), which ranks third in the National League.
The Dodgers pitching staff overall has posted a National
League-best 0.98 WHIP, while ranking among the top
teams in the NL with a 3.10 ERA (21 ER/61.0 IP, 2nd)
and a .219 opponents’ batting average (3rd), while
collecting 62 punchouts against just 11 walks through
seven games.
LEAVE IT TO PUIG: Yasiel Puig has been successful in his 12
regular-season games at Wrigley Field with a .425/.511/.700
slashline, going 17-for-40 with 13 runs, three doubles, a triple,
two homers, six RBI and seven multi-hit games on the North Side
of Chicago. Overall, Puig has also been successful against the
Cubbies, going 26-for-59 with four doubles, a triple, three homers
and seven RBI in 18 games and leading active players (min. 50
PA) in career batting average (.441) and on-base percentage
(.474), while ranking second in slugging percentage (.695):

GOOD WOOD: Left-hander Alex Wood will take the mound
today for his first start of the 2017 season, as he fills in for the
injured Rich Hill, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list
with a blister on his left middle finger. Wood started the year in
the bullpen and tossed 2.0 scoreless innings against the Padres on
April 5 at Dodger Stadium in his lone appearance out of the ‘pen.
In three career starts against the Cubs, he has gone 0-2 with a 4.41
ERA (8 ER/16.1 IP), while striking out 20 in 16.1 innings. He
faced the Cubs once last year, May 30, 2016 at Wrigley Field,
when he allowed two runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings and
collected seven strikeouts, but took the loss in the Dodgers’ 2-0
defeat.
In 77 career starts, Wood has gone 24-28 with a 3.40
ERA, while going 3-2 with a 2.72 ERA in 36 career relief
appearances.
STAY HOT MR. JT: Justin Turner kept his hot bat going
yesterday, as he recorded his fourth multi-hit game in just six
contests to begin the 2017 season, going 2-for-4 with a double
and two RBI against the Rockies. Turner is slashing
.400/.423/.600 on the young season and is tied for the Major
League lead with five doubles with Milwaukee’s Travis Shaw,
while tying for second in multi-hit games and tying for fifth in
hits with 10 knocks.
Along with Turner, four other Dodgers recorded multi-
hit games yesterday: Logan Forsythe (3-for-5), Corey
Seager (2-for-4), Joc Pederson (2-for-3) and Austin
Barnes (2-for-5).
Corey Seager, who is slashing .308/.379/.615 in seven
games this season, blasted his second home run of the
season with a two-run shot in the second inning
yesterday. Seager has driven in seven runs this season,
which is tied for third most in the National League
Logan Forsythe broke out of a 0-for-13 slump with a
leadoff double to start the game yesterday and collected
a season-high three hits.
Austin Barnes collected his first hit of the season with
his first career triple in the sixth inning, as he collected
just his second multi-hit game of his career (last: July 20,
2015 at Atlanta).
BIRTHDAY BOY!: The Dodgers would like to wish a very
happy birthday to outfielder Andre Ethier, who turns 35-years-
old today. Ethier, who has started the 2017 season on the disabled
list with a lumbar disk herniation, is the longest-tenured Dodger
in his 12th season with Los Angeles. He ranks among the all-time
Los Angeles Dodger leaders in games played (1,433, 8th), hits
(1,359, 7th), doubles (302, T-3rd), triples (34, 10th), home runs
