CLACKMANNAN PARISH CHURCH OF SCOTLAND—200 YEARS MODERATOR’S VISIT

On the 24th of August 1817 the present church building was dedicated by Mr Mylne, Minister of Dollar. The church celebrated the bicentenary of the church building during a service on Sunday 27th August. The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, Right Rev Dr Derek Brown-ing, was in attendance and gave a meaningful and inspiring sermon. During the course of the service he also presented a long service certificate, signed by himself, to Mr Robert Fleming who has completed 50 years service as an Elder, though not all of the years in Clackmannan. Robert, however, did hold office as Property Convenor and then latterly as Session Clerk of Clack-mannan Parish Church for several years. He was sincerely thanked by the Moderator for such a long service to the church. Also in attendance were the Rev Lynne Mack, Moderator of Stirling Presbytery, Rev Alex M Millar, our Interim Moderator, and Rev Ray Gaston, our Locum Minister (see photo on front cover). Each of them made a telling contribution to a service which was well appreciated by the congregation.

On the three days leading up to the visit of the Moderator, a Flower Festival took place in the church organised by Elspeth Cuthbertson and the flower ladies of the church. The floral creations depicted the old industries and businesses in and around Clackmannan (see photos throughout the maga-zine). Every visitor remarked on the creativity and skill displayed by the ar-rangers and complimented them accordingly. All in all, Clackmannan Parish Church of Scotland and its congregation should be proud of these four days of celebration to mark the bicentenary.

A Thought for Today

“If only…..”

Two of the saddest words you will ever hear. “If only I had ……”

Words that tell of regrets … opportunities missed … decisions not taken … mistakes avoided … a life wasted … potential not realised.

There are so many sad, unfulfilled “if only” people in the world.

And God never meant it to be this way: Jesus came that it should never be this way. His message was one of finding meaning, purpose, direction and fulfilment in life.

“Seek first God’s kingdom, and all else will be added to you” he said.

Meaning: let God’s love be the guiding force in your life and He will show you the way that is best for you – in your personal life, home life, relation-ships and career.

That way, you need never need to be one of the “if only …” people.

As the summer opening of our church once again draws to a close, I would like to give sincere thanks to all those people who helped by manning the church and welcoming visitors. We have had a good year with quite a num-ber of people popping in. Many have come to view the Bicentennial Exhibi-tion and they have all been very appreciative of the welcome they received and the efforts of the team who put the exhibition together. So, once again, many thanks to you all.

Christian Aid Walk

We started our walk at the Mercat Cross with 18 people, 4 of them children and ever so many dogs. We went down the Riccarton and on to the old rail-way path which we walked along as far as Brucefield. Here we took a left turn and carried on to Forestmill where we stopped for a break and a bit of lunch. Fiona lost us while walking along the railway. She walked too far past the exit to Brucefield. She took a selfie to let everyone know she actu-ally walked! The weather was extremely kind to us so this made our walk much more pleasant. After our lunch we crossed the road and ventured along the lade towards Gartmorn Dam. The group decided to walk back to Clackmannan via Linn Mill. A really good day with good company and lots of laughs. Big thanks to the children who walked extremely well without a murmur.

Aileen and Graeme Lindsay would like to thank Ray Gaston and the Church congregation for making our family feel so welcomed into the family of the Church.

The welcome given to Graeme in becoming a member was overwhelming and so appreciated.

The beautiful flower arrangement brought to us by Mary Millar when we were unwell was lovely and thoughtful, and put a warmth in our hearts. Thank you Mary for taking time out of your daily schedule to deliver this beautiful gift to us both.

The card was such an extra lovely touch which is heartfelt and warm from you all and is encouraging Graeme and me to improving our health.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. God Bless one and all.
