GWRRA NC-A “Piedmont Goldwings”

Wings Over the Smokies 2018 is in the history books and the rear view mirror. The attendance was down this year and proba-bly due to a combination of weather, Hurricane Florence, and

Wing Ding. That being said, those that attended seem to have a good time. The weather cleared up on Friday and Saturday and many members enjoyed riding our beautiful Smoky mountains. Thanks to all the Chapter A members who once again manned the grand prize and grand 50/50 ticket sales tables. The District couldn’t put on an event without the assistance of chapter members from across the state. At the end of the first day of sales, District Direc-tor Roy Bryant informed Colleen and me that they’d gone over the top in paying for the bike that was given away. All sales after that point went to other expenses of the rally and the funds needed to run the NC District throughout the year. The most important thing about the rally was the friendship and fellowship of mem-bers from the Chapter, the District, and the Nation. Opening and closing ceremonies this year were held inside and that was a vast improvement over last year. I was proud to carry the candle for our own Harriet Edger during the touching memorial service for District members that passed away since the 2017 Rally. The 2019 Wings Over the Smokies Rally will be held on September 26-29, 2019 at the fairgrounds in Waynesville again next year. Those that stayed at the Maggie Valley Inn enjoyed the facility and the excellent Rendezvous restaurant. It is definitely a motorcycle friendly venue and even had undercover parking to keep the bikes out of the rain. Next on our calendar is the Chapter picnic on October 13th and the annual beach trip weekend, November 2-4. The fun just keeps on coming! We’re looking forward to seeing everyone at our next chapter gathering and until next month, ride often and ride safe.

Wings Over the Smokies is a wrap! We had decent weather, a few showers Thursday, and some rain coming home Sunday, but warm and dry for the rally itself. We had jungle animals wandering through the crowds, but they were, for the most part, fairly tame and friendly. No one got bitten or trampled, but there

was one wild man-beast, maybe raised by Great Apes, who desperately needed a shave and haircut, who was desperately seeking attention!

Only one disappointment – I didn’t win the Gold Wing! We did have a new award, Individual of the Year, which was pre-sented to Bob Remillard – and for once, he was speechless! Congratulations, Bob, you deserved this award! His family came to share his day, as we recognized our friend Bob.

California Sidecar brought 3 trike conversions for display and demo rides. One of these, the red one, was a 2018 Gold Wing, 1800 cc, automatic transmission. Having heard this transmission worked very well, Kathy Gentry and I took it out for a demo ride down the road and through the curves, uphill and downhill. The transmission did work well, shifting pretty close to where I would have upshifted and downshifted. I was pleased with the ride, handling and response, particularly in Sport mode. Kathy and I both noticed the sounds made by the transmission as it shifted, not overly loud, but letting you know it was working. The back seat was not as comfortable as we expected it to be, inadequate lumbar support and not as well padded as it should be. This was a surprise, but the after-market will have options to address this.

With so many riders transitioning to trikes, and so many new or re-entry riders considering trikes, we’re glad to have options like this. GWRRA has a trike training class, and the state North Carolina Motorcycle Safety Program also has a 3-wheel BRC class. The state class, like the 2-wheel BRC, is a 2 ½ day training session, and offers a DMV waiver card is-sued upon successful completion which is accepted by DMV in lieu of their riding test, to issue a 3-wheel only motorcycle endorsement. This class includes standard trike modifications (2-wheels in the rear), but cannot include the bolt-on trike kits, and also includes Can-Am trikes, with 2 wheels in the front. You can check the web page for more information and class locations at http://ncmotorcyclesafety.org/, under Courses.

We had guided tours Friday and Saturday, great fun on great roads. We also had maps for self-guided tours, ranging from short and easy to challenging, all of the rides very scenic, generally low traffic, and enough curves and mountains to satisfy our needs! Please note, the Tail of the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway are included, and are world famous, but are not the only, or even the best, roads we have to ride in North Carolina!

If you couldn’t make it to Wings Over the Smokies this year, please plan ahead to join us next year, for friends, fun and great riding!

We are fortunate to ride in a very motorcycle-friendly state. Some other areas are more restrictive, and we’ve heard of problems in the past, such as the ordnances Myrtle Beach had passed to restrict motorcycles and motorcycle rallies, now revised, thankfully.

A few years back, there was an outcry in North Carolina because of a motorcycle-only checkpoint outside a BMW rally site. While this practice has not been continued, to my knowledge, there is still potential, as noted by a recent article in the American Motorcyclist Magazine. Excerpts below:

“Motorcycle-only checkpoints originated in New York state, and New York is among the few states that still employ this discriminatory practice.” And “[New York] City officials claim checkpoints are used to catch stunters and illegal dirt bike and ATV riders, but those riders don’t stop at the checkpoints.” “If mostly law-abiding riders stop, who is this hurting?” Erlbaum asked.” (Jesse Erlbaum, a task force member of The New York Motorcycle and Scooter Task Force which began in 2009, when the city closed the last motorcycle-only parking area.)

These motorcycle-only checkpoints also create traffic delays, and when other drivers see the cause for the traffic de-lays, their perception is that these motorcyclists must have done something wrong to be stopped by the police, even though it is a general stop of all motorcycles. You know how we all feel about traffic delays! Just in the past years, there were problems in New York with very large groups, particularly sport bikes, creating traffic problems and “stunting”, pulling wheelies at speed, blocking traffic, and weaving in and out of traffic, passing illegally. Riders like these create problems for all of us, as the motoring public does not always recognize the difference between responsible, law-abiding motorcyclists and these irresponsible law-breakers.

We continue to present a model of safety-oriented, responsible and law-abiding motorcycle riders, and encourage eve-ryone we meet to do the same, so we all can enjoy riding for many years to come.

Excerpted from Dave Mathers’ article for AMA magazine: ‘There are several great things about a perfect ride. You can have many of them in a lifetime. They can be as short as a trip around the block or thousands of miles. You can ride one up or two, solo or in large groups or small. The more often you ride, the better your chances of having another perfect ride.”

Watch for impromptu ride notifications - and see you at our gathering!

Ride safe, ride often. Paula, Ride Coordinator
