Marlene Bell of Big Sandy, Texas, was named the grand-prize winner of the Wisconsin Sheep Breeders Cooperative’s annual photo contest. Bell, whose photograph, “What Did You Say?,” captured two side-by-side, virtually identical Horned Dorset ewe lambs, also topped the contest’s Just Lambs category. As grand prize winner, Bell won a $50 gift card for photo services from Woodman's Markets, plus as a class winner, she received a $50 cash prize from WSBC. See Photo Contest article on page 2.

The 59th Annual WSBC Bred Ewe Sale is scheduled for October 27 at the Rock County Fair Grounds in Janesville, WI. This date is one week earlier than past sales at the request of several consignors who attend the North American Livestock Exposition in November.

The Sheep Breeders Coop continues its goal of providing a venue for members to sell and for youth, as well as both starting and established breeders, to buy quality genetics. With the deadline for consignments still over a week away at the time this article is being written, specifics of this year’s offering have not yet been established, but show organizers anticipate a diverse selection of quality animals. Interested buyers can view the sale catalogue on line at the WSBC website at www.wisbc.com or can contact Jill Alf at 608-868-2505 to receive a printed copy. Pictures of many entries will available on the website.

Sheep will sell at 1:00. There will not be a show for sale order as in the past but all entries will be checked for soundness by a veterinarian and be available for viewing by 11:00. Sheep will sell in random order by breed. Anyone interested in buying , but

unable to attend, is encouraged to place a mail/phone bid with Jill Alf at [email protected] or sale chairman, Steve Bingen at [email protected] or 262-388-3324.

Youth are also encouraged to arrive before 11:00 to participate in the youth Judging contest with awards.

The Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival, hosted by the Wisconsin Sheep Breeders Cooperative, continues to be a destination for exhibitors from across the country and near perfect fall weather greeted them at Jefferson Fair Park as they took part in the Open and Junior sheep shows on September 8th and 9th. 213 head entered the Open Wool Breeds division which saw Supreme Ram honors presented to Hi-Way C Columbia's of Mindoro, WI, with their Yearling Columbia Ram. Supreme Ewe in the Wool Breeds division was exhibited by Ram-Lin Acres of Richland Center WI, with a yearling Rambouillet ewe. In the Meat Breeds Division, 199 entries competed for supreme honors, with supreme ram honors going to Houfe Dorsets of Milton,

WI with their fall ram lamb. Supreme ewe of the Meat Breeds Division was a Hampshire yearling ewe presented by Jessica Alf of Alf Hampshires, Edgerton, WI.

Quality sheep, and even higher quality youth entered 247 head for the junior breeding sheep show, and included in this year was the ASBA Midwest Regional Junior Southdown Show. In the junior meat breeds division, Supreme Champion Ram went to Lauren Ace, Stoughton WI, with a Suffolk yearling ram and Jessica Alf, Edgerton, WI took the Supreme Champion Ewe award with her Champion Hampshire yearling ewe entry. Connecting the sheep industry and the general public is one mission of the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival. Such a beautiful weekend! It could not have been more perfect for a festival. While the final numbers are not yet tallied, the Wisconsin Sheep and Wool Festival was again a magnificent success. I cannot begin to express my gratitude for all the volunteers who put in endless hours to make it look like it just happens. A list would go on for pages and I know I would inadvertently forget someone, so I will refrain from even trying to thank each one by name. You all know who you are and how hard you worked, so I’ll just say “Thank You”.

The other beautiful part of fall is looking out across a pasture filled with sheep and seeing the colorful marks that let us know that when the cold Wisconsin winter is upon us, we can look forward to the birth of new lambs. They always make winter seem less harsh, and bring a hope of spring.

Don’t forget about the WI Bred Ewe Sale on October 27th. All pertinent information can be

found on the WI Sheep Breeders website. Steve Bingen has worked hard to breath new life into this sale, and the board feels that it is a worthwhile endeavor, so if you are even remotely thinking about a purchase, please come and support the breeders of Wisconsin.

Best of luck to all who exhibit at NAILE and other fall and winter shows. If you haven’t noticed, Wisconsin exhibitors are usually among the elite at national shows.

There will undoubtedly be challenges in 2013 for all of us due to the drought this summer. We will all pay higher feed prices and worry more about the bottom line, but who ever said that being a sheep producer was easy? We’ll come through this just as we have all challenges.

By a vote by those attending the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival, Marlene Bell of Big Sandy, Texas, was named the grand-prize winner of the Wis-consin Sheep Breeders Coop-erative’s annual photo contest. Bell, whose photograph, “What Did You Say?”, captured two side-by-side, virtually identical Horned Dorsets, also topped the contest’s Just Lambs category. As grand prize winner, Bell won a $50 gift card for photo services from Woodman’s Markets, plus as a class winner, she received a $50 cash prize from WSBC.

“Baah, Summer’s Almost Over!”, a photo by l8-year-old Emily Petzel of Centuria, received the most votes in the Photo Taken by Youth category. Petzel received an Andis Model 68000 Heavy Duty Sheep Shears, with a retail value of $380, donated by Blain’s Farm & Fleet.

The Country Today presented a $50 cash prize to the winner of the Scenic Photo category, Chellney Newhouse of State Center, Iowa. Newhouse’s photo was entitled “Sunrise.” Wisconsin State Farmer presented a $50 cash prize to Gale Yaeger of Cambridge, the winner of the Any Other Sheep or Wool Photo category. Yaeger’s photograph was entitled “Border Collie in Training: Is It My Turn Yet?”. Pat Wiford of Wapakoneta, Ohio, won the Kids and Sheep category with a photo called “Let Me Give Ewe A Kiss.” Wiford received a $50 cash prize from WSBC for being a class winner.

This year marks the first time Blain’s Farm & Fleet and Wisconsin State Farmer have served as contest sponsors. In addition to prizes to the grand-prize winner and class winners, each of the finalist photos were awarded premiums based on the number of contest entries.

“Overall participation in this year’s contest more than doubled over the two previous years, plus we saw a significant increase in entries in the Youth class,” said Jane Metcalf, photo contest chairman. “The quality of the photos entered seems to improve every year, and the judges had a challenging job to select the finalist photos this year.”

A panel of judges narrowed the contest entries to the top six in each category, and visitors to the

Texas Entry Tops WSBC Photo Contest

The Wisconsin Make It With Wool Contest was held during the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival at Jefferson County Fair Park in Jefferson on September 8. There were twenty-eight garment and novelty entries. Contestants in the Make It With Wool contest competed for top prizes in the five garment divisions – Preteen, Junior, Senior, Adult, and Made for Others. Garments must have been constructed during the contest year and made of wool or wool blend fabrics, wool yarn or specialty fibers such as mohair and alpaca. Judging was done by 6 judges who spoke with each contestant individually and then judged the construction of the garments. A style show, coordinated by Lisa Graves, Sussex, WI, was held during the afternoon. The Style Show featured all contestants modeling their unique and skillfully crafted garments before an appreciative audience. Winners in all categories were announced and prizes presented.

All garment contestants re-ceived Pendleton wool and a var-iety of prizes which included sewing notions, yarn, hand-dyed wool and gift certificates from bus inesses throughout Wisconsin.

Junior and Senior winners Mary McDonald and Jessica Alf will travel to the National MIWW competition in San Antonio, TX, in January. Adult winner Anna Schultz will prepare a video featuring her garment and submit it to a national panel of judges. The National Adult Winner will then be notified and will receive a trip to the national competition in San Antonio.

The major sponsor of the Make It With Wool contest is the Wisconsin Sheep Breeders Cooperative. Jefferson County Agri-Business and Watertown Agri Business provide support to Make It With Wool along with numerous businesses and organ-izations throughout Wisconsin.

The 2013 Make It With Wool competition will be held September 7, 2013 during the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival at Jefferson County Fair Park in Jefferson. 2012 Make It With Wool Contest

It was a record-setting year for the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival Fleece Shows, with 161 entries, including over forty Shetland fleeces. Neil Kentner, Mason, MI, judged the Open and Junior show entries, while Letty Klein, Kalamazoo, MI judged the MSSBA Shetland show fleeces. Sales were at a record high as well, with most fleeces finding a new home by the close of bidding on Sunday afternoon.

In the Wool Breeds Division of the Open Show at Jefferson, Ram-Lin Acres of Richland Center, WI exhibited a yearling Rambouillet ewe that captured the 2012 Supreme Champion Ewe ribbon.

The 2012 Supreme Champion Open Show Wool Breed Ram at the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival was a yearling Columbia shown by Hi-Way C Columbias, Mindoro, WI.

Supreme Meat Breed Ram honors in the Open Show at Jefferson went to Houfe Dorsets, Milton, WI with their fall Dorset ram lamb.

Alf Hampshires of Edgerton, WI received Supreme Meat Breed Ewe honors in both the Open and Junior shows at Jefferson.


Shetland Exhibitors Turn Out at Jefferson

Midwest Shetland Sheep Breeders Association (MSSBA) exhibitors showed that theirs is still the breed in the lead when it comes to filling the pens at the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival. Almost ninety sheep were entered in the 2012 MSSBA event, which draws exhibitors from five states across the upper Midwest.

Spectators got the opportunity to look at a new class of fleeces at the Shetland fleece show this year, as judge Letty Klein separated the 41 Shetland entries into shorn and rooed fleeces. This is possibly the first effort to make the distinction between rooed and shorn entries in the U.S., according to Kelly Bartels, MSSBA Show Superintendent. Bartels explained that rooing is the natural release of the wool from the skin in early spring to early summer and is a trait of some of the northern short-tailed breeds, one of them being the Shetland. It appears the trait is more common in finer fleeced sheep and some of the fine-wooled Shetlands may start rooing as early as February in some areas. One advantage to rooing over shearing is that it is a less traumatic method by which the fiber is “plucked” from a sheep rather than by traditionally shearing the animal. The chance of second cuts is also completely eliminated with the rooing

method. Bartels explained that fleeces can be skirted throughout the rooing process and that vegetative matter simply drops away from the fleece at the same time. “We hope to bring more attention to the advantages of this primitive trait to the general public with the inclusion of the rooed fleece class,” she added.

Bartels noted that the MSSBA members had added activities to their show schedule this year, including a photo contest, while expanding the youth showmanship and building on their Handy Shepherd mini-clinics, which featured a Flett Shetland Sheep demo and discussion of AI . The Monroe, WI producer also gave a nod to her many volunteers and co-chairs.

The annual Beginning Sheep Shearing School will be held on Saturday and Sunday, December 1 and 2, 2012 at the Sheep Unit, Arlington Agricultural Research Station, Arlington, WI. The school will cover basic shearing skills including sheep handling, shearing positions, wool handl-ing, and equipment care and maintenance. Cost of the school will be $75.00 per participant. All equipment will be furnished. Participants may bring their own shearing equipment if they wish. Registration includes lunch both days. The 18th Annual Dairy Sheep Association of North America (DSANA) Symposium will be held during the three full days of Oct. 18 -20, 2012 at the Holiday Inn Washington-Dulles Inter-national Airport, Dulles, Virginia in the Washington D.C. area. The symposium will include presentations by dairy sheep producers, sheep milk processors, university scientists, and industry service personnel on Oct. 18 and 19 followed by a bus tour on Saturday, Oct. 20 of dairy sheep farms in Maryland and Virginia, both with farmstead cheese oper-ations. Program and regis tra-tion information is available on the Dairy Sheep Association of North America’s web site (www.dsana.org). This Symposium will offer an excellent opportunity for established dairy sheep pro-ducers and sheep milk proces-sors to gather information to improve their operations while also offering new or potential producers and processors the opportunity to network with people active in the industry.

Youth Sweepstakes: Another Success StoryOver ninety young exhibitors took

part in the 2012 Youth Sweepstakes, marking the fifth year that the program has provided cash and merchandise awards for youth participating in a series of festival activities. This year the opportunity to score points was increased with the inclusion of the junior and Shetland fleece shows, as well as Shetland showmanship and junior breeding sheep exhibitors.

The Skillathon welcomed Sam and Pat Wiford as they returned to Jefferson with new challenges and opportunities to test the skill levels of kids and adults alike. Assisted by student volunteers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the Wifords reported that 54 youth scored for the Youth Sweepstakes competition, while numerous families and individuals went through the series of skill stations just for the learning experience. This is the seventh year the Skillathon has been offered at the festival. Scoring opportunities also include poster contest, judging contest, lead class, showmanship and exhibiting sheep and/or market lambs.

The 5th annual Badger Production Sale, held on Sunday, September 23, 2012 at the Arlington Agricultural Research Station, once again saw high demand for sheep produced by the University of Wisconsin-Madison sheep program. The sale offering of 52 ewe lambs and 6 rams averaged $432 per head, up almost $30 per head above the sale average from 2011. The sale is organized, run, and staffed by students from the University of Wisconsin-Madison as an opportunity to learn merchandising skills by marketing sheep from the purebred flocks of the Department of Animal Sciences. This year’s student organizers, Jennifer Babcock, Kelly Schroeder, and Lija Siltumens, were supervised by Todd Taylor, Manager of the Arlington Sheep Research and Teaching Unit ([email protected]); Bernie O’Rourke, Exten-sion Livestock Youth Specialist ([email protected]); and Dr. Dave Thomas, Professor of Sheep Management and Genetics ([email protected]).

This year’s high seller was a Hampshire ram lamb bringing a winning bid of $900, purchased by Sky Hi Ranch, Allen Fehrman, Tilleda, WI. A pair of Hampshire ewes each sold for $725 to Metro Hamps, Allen and Heidi Thorson

of Columbus, WI and JP Farms of Winthrop, IL. JP Farms also bid $675 on another popular ewe. Five additional Hampshire ewes brought between $525 and $575. In all, 20 Hampshire ewe lambs commanded an average of $459, and 3 Hampshire ram lambs averaged $658 per head. Return buyer, Ed Accola from Fall Creek, WI purchased a total of 7 Hampshire ewes as the volume buyer for the breed.

Two Polypay ram lambs ranking within the top end of the flock for Maternal Estimated Breeding Values brought a final price of $725 each; both purchased by Fred Howard of Albany, IL. A total of 27 Polypay ewe lambs averaged $363 per head. An offer of $475 from Russ Smith of Houston, MN captured the high selling Polypay ewe lamb. A pair of ewes purchased by Big Prairie Polypays, Mark Meier and Family, Ashton, IL and a ewe bought by Mark and Brenda Van Roekel of Orange City, IA each garnered $450. Van Roekel’s were also the volume buyers of this year’s sale, purchasing a total of 13 Polypay ewe lambs.

The sale offering also included 5 Rambouillet ewe lambs and one Rambouillet yearling ram. Tim Miller, Tailwind Farms of Beloit, WI purchased 2 of the ewe lambs

for $475 each, and a third at that price was purchased by Larry Becker of Montello, WI. Becker also purchased the yearling ram for $450.

A total of 35 buyers registered to bid, and sheep sold to Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Missouri, and Wisconsin.

2012 Badger Production Sale Results

Sale averages were up by $30 a head as Bob Johnson, Badger State Auction Service gaveled through almost sixty head at the Badger Production Sale sponsored by the University of Wisconsin-Madison Sheep program. The sale, now in its fifth year, was organized by UW-Madison Animal Science students.

The Champion Southdown Ram in the ASBA Midwest Regional Junior Southdown Show was shown by Dathan Smerchek of Rosholt, WI. Twenty-five young Southdown exhibitors turned out for the show, which was hosted by the Wisconsin Southdown Association and held in conjunc tion with the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival.

The Top Gun Award at the Regional Junior Southdown Show at Jefferson went to Hannah Taylor (l.) of Arlington, WI, as the highest placing Southdown junior exhibitor in the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival Youth Sweepstakes placings. Tied for second spot in the Top Gun Standings amoung Southdown juniors were Haley Yunker, (c.) St. Croix Falls, WI and Casey Lobdell, (r.) Darlington, WI.

Kelsi Smerchek, Rosholt, WI, exhibited the Champion South down Ewe at the recent Midwest Regional Junior Southdown Show at Jefferson, WI. Along with awards, the Wisconsin South down Association provid ed an additional $500 in prem iums money for the show.

The Wisconsin Junior Southdown Association met up once again at the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival. However, this year it was more than just the Festival. The Wisconsin Southdown Breeders Association worked with the Wisconsin Sheep & Wool Festival to host the Midwest Regional Junior Southdown Show. There were over fifty head of Southdowns exhibited. Champion Ewe was exhibited by Kelsi Smerchek; reserve was shown by Jenna Langer. Champion Ram was won by Dathen Smerchek and reserve by Beckett Spilde. The “Top Gun” award has been given out for several years now to the exhibitor with the best combination of scores from showing and multiple educational events including a judging contest, Skillathon contest, poster contest and others. This year’s Southdown Top Gun was Hannah Taylor, with runners-

up Haley Yunker and Casey Lobdell who tied for second. Also awarded this year was the “Highpoint Rookie” which is awarded to the first-time exhibitor with the highest combination of scores same as above. Luke Stern took that award home this year. On Saturday after the open show the Wisconsin Junior Southdown Association gathered for a pizza party and held their meeting where they elected new officers for the upcoming year. The 2012-2013 officer team includes Courtney Lobdell, President; Kelly Vierck, Vice President; Hannah Taylor, Secretary; and Casey Lobdell Treasurer. New t-shirts were handed out to everyone and afterwards all the kids helped put together welcome baskets for all the Southdown showmen. All in all the show was a great success and kids look forward to seeing each other again at shows next year.

The Wisconsin Club Lamb Association wrapped up a successful 2012 show season with the annual meeting and awards presentation at the Wisconsin Sheep and wool festival in Jefferson WI. During the annual meeting new officers were elected to fill vacating positions. Alan Thorson was elected as the new President, Amanda Hannes was elected as the secretary, Jason Johnson was elected back as a sale co-chair, Margaret Balfanz returned as the points chair. These new board members join already active board members; Stacy Schmoll, vice president; Heidi Thorson, Treasurer; Bruce Suddeth, at large; and Sasha Johnson, sale chair. Also elected to the board were 2 youth representatives Collin Novak and Samantha Bohm. A big thank you went to Terri Dallas and Mark Novak for their years of service as they exit the board. Motions passed included adding an 8 and under showmanship class, discontinuing the live lamb sale, and having the board put together a recommended judges list for the show committees. Forty five youth participated in shows throughout the summer to earn points towards WCLA final awards. During the awards presentation 66 different awards were presented to the top points winners, which are listed below. The UW-Madison, Agri cul tural Research Stations is pleased to announce the hiring of Michel Baldin as Assistant Researcher at the Spooner Agri-cultural Research Station, Spooner, WI. Michel will be in charge of sheep research and out reach at the Spooner Station and succeeds Yves Berger who com pleted 24 years in the position on June 30, 2012.

Michel is from the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil in the southwest of the country. This state is an important livestock region of Brazil. He grew up on a dairy cattle and beef cattle farm and also has considerable experience with both sheep and goats. Michel completed the M.S. degree at Santa Catarina State University, Lages, Santa Catarina, Brazil in May 2012 where he conducted research in lactational physiology with both dairy sheep and dairy goats. He brings excellent livestock experiences and academic train ing to the position. Michel is well positioned to further develop the excellent sheep research program established at the Spooner Station.

Michel will officially begin his tenure at UW-Madison on Oct. 1, 2012. He will first com plete orientation on campus in Madison and then be present at the Spooner Station starting the second week of October. Michel Baldin, Santa Catarina, Brazil, has been hired to replace Yves Berger, who finished out his tenure of 24 years in sheep research at the Spooner Agricultural Research Station on June 30 of this year. Baldin, who completed his M.S. degree this past spring, will begin his his duties at Spooner in early October.
