Nicola told The Wishaw HUB “I’m so grateful to Derek Conner who owns Soapy Bubbles for allowing the full use of his car wash facility and allowing us to keep all the profits from the day. Everyone was so generous, with some even paying £20 to have their cars cleaned. I’d also like to pass on my thanks to the girls and big Stevie who all dressed up and helped out on the day, plus the staff of Soapy Bubbles for helping us out and joining in the fun. “

‘Britain’s Got Talent’ star Janey Cutler dies, aged 82Tributes have poured in

from all across Wishaw as people were left saddened by the death of Britain’s Got Talent singer Janey Cutler, who passed away at the age of 82.

The singing Wishaw grandmother blew judges and viewers away with her performance of Edith Piaf’s ‘Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien’ during last year’s series of the hit ITV1 TV Show.Friends and family were quick to leave heartfelt messages of condolence on the social networking site Facebook, with her grandson Ian Scott writing: “Good night, rest in peace oor wee granny, mother and friend to all”

Janey reached the grand finals and finished in ninth place in the competition that

was eventually won by dance group Spelbound. Despite apparent fears for her health at the time, the then 81-year-old proceeded to perform on the Britain’s Got Talent UK tour.

Speaking during last summers tour, she admitted the experience had been “very tiring”, but insisted that she was “enjoying it a lot” and upon being compared to Scottish singer Susan Boyle, Janey said that it was “flattering” but that she wanted “to be successful in my own way”.Eventual competition winners Spelbound passed on their condolences by saying “Our thoughts and condolences go to her family. She was a lovely lady with a laugh that was very infectious.

‘BGT’ Star Edward Reid New Patron of Ups & DownsLanarkshire based Ups &

Downs Theatre group were celebrating the beginning of their new session with a funtastic Fairground Attraction Day at the Dalziel Sports Field in Motherwell.

The activity day saw members from the 75 strong cast, along with their family and friends have fun with Bouncy castles, electronic surfboards, sumo suits, penalty shoot outs, along with a pampering nail bar and lots of fun face painting.

As if that wasn’t exciting enough, they were also thrilled when their new patron Edward Reid (from Britain’s Got Talent) made a special appearance wowing the audience with his unique take on popular songs, including ‘Born this Way’ and his magical nursery rhyme ensemble which got him through to the semi-finals of the TV talent show.

After Edward’s cousin had a baby boy with Down Syndrome last year, the singer felt motivated to assist similar children with special needs and with the Ups & Downs being a performance based charity, he realised he was in the perfect position to use his experience, as a drama teacher to help promote

the club.President of the Ups and Downs

Lorna Leggatt said, “We are all extremely excited about the year ahead, I know our production team have a really fantastic show planned for next March and it’s wonderful that Edward has come forward to volunteer to his help this year. Today has been such a success, with friends & families coming from all over central Scotland and the sun making a

rare appearance, this has been a huge bonus. It’s been really great to meet up with all the families following our summer break today before the hard work begins with rehearsals next week”

The Ups & Downs Theatre Group will be performing in the Hamilton Townhouse from Monday 5th to Saturday 10th March 2012. For more information, follow ‘Ups & Downs Theatre Group’ on Facebook.

Teenager Dee Anderson is looking towards a bright future in modelling

Staff at Iceland in Motherwell treated

customers to a delicious bake sale on Friday 26th August as they sold their own home cooked wares to raise funds on behalf of Iceland’s chosen charity, Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Over £300 was raised in the

bake sale to add to funds raised throughout the year including raffles and charity football matches. Some staff will be taking part in a charity bungee jump on the 16th October and anyone is welcome to sponsor the jumpers by popping into the store.

Stephanie Haugh, sales

assistant at Iceland told The Wishaw HUB “I would like to thank all my fellow colleagues who helped make the day possible by both baking the goods and selling them on the day. On behalf of all the staff at Iceland, we would like to thank our customers for supporting us on the day.”

Having competed in the Face of Glasgow competition,

local Netherton teenager Dee Anderson has successfully made it through to UK finals having picked up the Miss Charity title after raising over £200 completing a sponsored walk around Strathclyde Park.

The beautiful 17 year old will now fly down to London for a UK wide competition on the 17th September against all the other Miss Charities from other heats held in cities across the UK; however, before the event she must raise as much money as possible for good causes to stand a chance of reaching the finals of the larger Face of Europe competition held in Paris.

With just over a week to plan, organise and run a charity event, Dee has her work cut out for her and is appealing to local businesses for support,

telling The Wishaw HUB “I’m considering running a race night and possible fashion show on Friday 9th September and I’m looking for prizes to raffle off, as well as sourcing other fundraising ideas to do on the night.”

Dee is a former pupil of Dalziel High and will be starting an Occupational Therapy course in Edinburgh at Queen Margaret’s University in a few weeks. Following her success in the Glasgow competition, Dee has also been signed up to The Model HUB – a Lanarkshire based modelling agency.

If you can support Dee in her endeavours by donating raffle prizes or suggest fund raising ideas, please contact The Wishaw HUB’s editorial team on 07801 497 314 or email [email protected] and we’ll put you in touch.

New Craigneuk War Memorial Remembers Greatest Sacrifice

Hundreds of people turned out for the unveiling of Craigneuks War Memorial on Saturday 27th August.

The brave soldiers from Craigneuk and Berryhill in Wishaw, who lost their lives in the World Wars between 1914 and 1918 claiming 159 lives, the 1938 to 1945 conflict claiming 84 and 2 further lives lost in Northern Ireland, have now had their names etched onto the new look memorial after campaigners spent 3 years raising £65,000 to fund the project located outside Craigneuk Library.

The Environmental Key Fund donated over £30,000, whilst Orange Lodge members from Wishaw raised around £5000 towards the memorial.

Rev. Gerard Chromy of St Patrick’s Church and Rev. Robert

Craig of Wishaw, Craigneuk and Belhaven Parish Church, linked with Wishaw Old Parish Church, both attended the dedication ceremony joined by pupils from Dalziel High School and Our Lady’s High School in Motherwell who gave readings.

Victoria Cross holder William Clamp, who was schooled in Craigneuk, had a dedicated plaque unveiled on the cenotaph. William received the Victoria Cross after rushing a machine-gun post in 1917 at Poelcapelle in Belgium, capturing 20 prisoners before being gunned down by a sniper.

Following the unveiling, a surrounding community garden was officially opened offering the children in attendance an opportunity to make use of bouncy castles, climbing wall, arts and crafts and face painting.

‘BASICS food BANK’ Hold Information Day

On the 18th August 2011 the BASICS food BANK

(Lanarkshire) project held an “Information Day” in the Wishaw Baptist Church, Wishaw.

Those invited guests who attended witnessed a presentation about the

workings of the Christian project which was given by the project coordinator David Shaw who explained where the project was based at present with Motherwell and Wishaw split over two days a week. He also outlined plans to open a BASICS food BANK collection

point in the Shotts region covering the areas of Stane, Benhar, Salsburgh & Dykehead.

David explained that the Christian project was set-up to reach out to those in the community who are experiencing a time of crisis in their lives with the offer of a gift which contains non-perishable food, hygiene products and Christian literature (first week only). The project works in conjunction with a variety of referral agencies such as Social Work, Health Centres, Citizen Advise Bureau, churches and housing offices who refer people onto the project in order to benefit from the service.

The food parcels only

contain non-perishable items which include tinned beans, soups, pasta, tinned fruit and noodles with the hygiene items including toothpaste, soap and toilet roll. The project will commit to a maximum of two weeks of giving and each referral will be taken on its own merit.

The Information Day concluded with a lunch being provided by the ladies of Wishaw Baptist Church.

If you would you like to help the BASICS food BANK project by donating non-perishable food items and hygiene products, please e-mail [email protected] or call 0770 8181347 to speak with David.

Harthill ... Past and PresentEvery so often we like to

draw attention to one of our local town centres covering their past and highlighting some of the present day shops that trade on our main streets and would appreciate the support of their local community. This issue our focus is on Harthill, the furthest west village that our publication reaches laying right on the border between North Lanarkshire and West Lothian on the River Almond. With a population of just over 3,500 people, the town grew up as a result of the coal mining industries of North Lanarkshire with some original mining homes still remaining after the closure of one of the deep mine coat pits, Polkemmet, that closed in 1984 around the time of the infamous miners strikes.Lord Polkemmet (messrs Baillie) and his family, originally from Lanarkshire, had owned much land around Harthill and Whitburn. They had purchased the land from a Mr Alan Shaw in 1620. The Baillies built a mansion in the grounds of the now public Polkemet Country Park and it became the family residence for over 300 years. The Baillies owned many local collieries and Lord

Polkemmet’s son William was made a Baronet in 1823.Sir William Baillie and his wife Lady Baillie extended the house in 1822 and the building was in continuous ownership by the Baillie family until the 1950s. At its height the building had 39 rooms and offices, 11 domestic servants and servants quarters. The grounds included

stables, fodder store, a horse driven mill, a tack room for keeping carriages and later motor cars and tennis courts and bowling green. The Baillie family played an active role in the community, giving significant sums of money for the construction of public buildings and other developments, including the Baillie Institutes (community centres) built in Harthill, Whitburn and Blackburn. The Baillie Institute building in Harthill is now the Pentecostal church. Sir William and Lady Baillie were also responsible for the establishment of the Lady Baillie Sabbath School in Whitburn. Once a year the family would open their mansion to the public and on several other days each summer made it available for Sunday school outings and during the war Polkemmet House was used both as a war hospital and accommodation for Polish Soldiers who had fled Nazi-occupied Poland to fight for Britain. The origins of Harthill can be traced as far back as 1767 and in 1780 The Edinburgh to Glasgow Flyer Stagecoach would pass through the small village 20 times a day where horses would be changed and watered at The Halfway House, now a private dwelling in Polkemmet Country Park and Golf Course. By 1882, Harthill village was thriving with many external business links and its own commercial bank and continued to attract incomers

who settled in the area.A monument was erected on top of the local natural stone in 1866 used by Covenanter Preacher Alexander Peden. As was common with many Covenanter preaching places across Scotland

at that time, the location of the Peden stone is in a remote and difficult to find area and hidden from general view. The Peden Stone is maintained by a local Covenanters committee and an annual open service (Conventicle) is maintained at the site of the Peden stone.Up until 1871, Harthill had no church building and instead services were held in local schools before The Harthill Free Church was formally opened on 20th July 1871 by Rev William Arnott of Edinburgh. The Gala Day has been a tradition in Harthill for over 100 years and includes the neighbouring villages of Eastfield and Greenrigg. A day of fun which begins with the colourful parade of floats, bands and people in fancy dress which marches from the Alexander Peden Primary school on through the streets of all three villages and on into Harthill Public Park. The Crowning Ceremony in the park ends the parade then the Queen begins the sports and fun. Recent years have seen all sorts of events including para-gliding exhibitions, birds of prey, fireworks display and much more. The travelling fair known locally as ‘the shows’ are also an attraction during Gala week.

Countinued...

Harthill, Eastfield and Greenrigg Children’s Gala Day are held annually on the 2nd Saturday in June.Greenrigg only once held its own Gala day. This happened in 1947 and was held in the Polkemmet estate for the children. Many people now know Harthill for driving under its newly designed footbridge at the service station, known as Harthill Services, which were completely re-developed around 2006 and

stables, fodder store, a horse driven mill, a tack room for keeping carriages and later motor cars and tennis courts and bowling green.

Many people now know Harthill for driving under its newly designed footbridge at the service station, known as Harthill Services, which were completely re-developed around 2006 and

renamed Heart of Scotland services. The modern and stylish replacement footbridge bridge over the motorway, which was designed by Buro Happold, opened in October 2008 and cost £5 million which completed the redevelopment.Long gone are the days of horse and carts with bustling town centres, now with the growth in online shopping, large supermarkets and people travelling out with the town to easily accessible shopping

AIRPORT SECURITYThis edition of Q’s Views

is an international edition, as I am writing it from my honeymoon. Yes, I am in Florence where it’s 35 celsius. This has no relevance to this week’s column, I am mentioning the temperature merely to taunt you as you look outside to what is probably a rainy Scottish day. Indeed, every time I go on holiday, Scotland seems to flood, so I’d take care if I were you.

Anyway, on my way here i encountered quite a bizarre display in an airport. It was a cabinet full of items you couldn’t bring on a plane for security reasons but may not be aware of (e.g- liquids). The items included toothpaste, a glass snow globe, and a swan-off shotgun. The latter item is a tad obvious, but did we ever think a time would come when a tube of toothpaste could be deemed as deadly as a firearm?

Indeed, my mate Spanner has twice fallen foul of airport security recently. On a trip abroad he was stopped with a bottle of liquid in his pocket. The friendly airport security staff said “We’re going to watch you drink it all right now!” thinking it was water and that they were being kind. It was vodka. Spanner doesn’t

remember much of the flight after that.

Once Spanner got abroad and recovered from a 48hr hangover, he texted me to say what I good time he was having, and that I’d love the

fuel prices abroad. I jokingly texted back that he should fill up some ginger bottles for my car. I didn’t realise he would actually do it folks. Once the airport staff on his return home saw a bag full of bottles of petrol, they assumed he was on his way to London to riot and surrounded him with dogs and tasers.

THE FRINGEBefore going

to Florence, my new wife and I stopped in at the Edinburgh Fringe to see a few shows. There are a Scottish few acts worth looking out for if you fancy a trip there yourself, namely Billy Kirkwood, Des

Clarke, Raymond Mearns, and a nutter with a paintbrush.

“Paintbrush?” I hear you cry “Does he do an art based act?” Well, not quite. A few years ago he turned up on the Royal Mile asking passers by if they’d

like to appear in his Fringe show covered in body paint. Most people weren’t keen, but two young ladies duly obliged and followed him to his studio.

Now, most people would be suspicious at being asked

this question in the first place. They would be certainly be suspicious when they discovered at his “studio”, and discovered that it was in fact a public toilet. And they’d certainly have been suspicious when the tin of “body paint” had the Dulux dog on it. But not our two heroines. They stripped down to their underwear, and allowed the nutter to paint them from head to toe gloss paint.

As the paint dried in and the paint fumes made them dizzy,

the nutter told them to be at a rather plush Edinburgh hotel at 9pm that evening, and off he went. Imagine their faces upon arriving at the hotel later, only to be told that there were no Fringe shows whatsoever at it.

As if they hadn’t been sickened enough by the prankster and the paint fumes, they decided to get their pictures in a tabloid newspaper telling everyone their names and what had happened. Yes...

Anyway folks, if a strange looking man invites you into a toilet to be body painted, tell Lothian and Borders police immediately. Then get yourselves off to see Billy, Des or Raymond. You won’t be disappointed. Or painted.

AND FINALLYBack in April 2010

when Claire and I got engaged, we saw something odd yet nice in Paris- a bridge with lots of little padlocks clipped to it.

At first I thought this meant a lot of people had had their bikes stolen, but upon examination I saw that the padlocks had messages of true love written on them by

romantic couples, and had been left there as a symbol of love and to leave a little bit of themselves behind in Paris.

Now that we’re in Florence, we have seen the exact same thing on a bridge over here. Which has given me a thought- why don’t we have something like this in Glasgow? So folks, here’s what I suggest- if you truly love someone, get yourself a wee padlock, write something nice on it, and clip it to the Squiggly Bridge? Go on, you know you want to, and I will do it when I get home.

I was thinking of starting a Facebook page urging people to do this, but if David Cameron has his way I could get up to 4 years in prison.

Motherwell supporters’ team Fir Park Corner

FC would like to announce the appointment of their new management duo, Barry McKnight and Gavin Hepworth.

Further to David Fraser (Fraz’s) decision to step down on a high in May after winning the IFA Scottish and British League

titles, last season’s defensive lynchpins McKnight and Hepworth have been appointed.

Barry said, “We’re both delighted to be taking over such a successful and hard-working squad, and obviously our main aim is to try to retain both titles and maintain the stylish football we have become known for. We

appreciate that the task will be more difficult this year with a number of IFA teams improving tremendously, however both Gav and I are looking forward to the challenge immensely.”

The club have also secured new training tops courtesy of generous local restaurant and new club sponsor Pink Turban.

Port Glasgow 1 – 3 Shotts Bon Accord

The Pink Turban’s manager proudly holding the Scottish League trophy, along with the championship winning FPC squad in their new training kit.”

<<< FOOTBALL

The home team gave away a fair number of fouls in

the first half and it was from a free kick awarded in the 40th minute that the Bon Accord took a long overdue lead.

Hanlon smacked a great shot against the bar and in the melee that followed it was hard to ascertain who had got the last touch to force the ball over the line.

After the break the inevitable happened in 49 minutes: Port scored with their first real chance when Nugent sidestepped Hanlon and shot the ball just inside Murdoch’s near post.

In the 78th minute, Ferguson got a header in at the far post. It would probably have gone in anyway but Fleming made sure

by simultaneously giving the ball a nudge over the line.Wharton made the game safe with a 30-yard free kick in

88 minutes, the ball sailing over the outstretched arms of Tucker who was too far off his line.

Garrowhill Thistle 3 v 3 Wishaw High School FPs

Wishaw High School FPs travelled to Lochend High School in Easterhouse on

Saturday 27th August to face Division 1A side Garrowhill Thistle in the 1st round of the League Cup.

FPs manager Gary Hailstones was hoping for a positive reaction to the 3-0 defeat at the hands of Pollok AFC the previous Wednesday.Despite the FPs again starting the match looking dangerous, they fell behind after 17 minutes. Gary Hattie shot past Gemmell after fine link up play with Gary Miller to even the score.

With 15 minutes remaining, Alan Patrick put The FPs in front as he slotted home from 6 yards however the lead was short lived when again Lee

Drummond smashed an unstoppable 25 yard effort past the despairing dive of O’Hara to pull the scores level at 2-2.

In the 2nd period of Extra time Alan Patrick put The FPs 3-2 in front however Garrowhills response was again immediate with a well drilled effort which found the corner of the net to send the match into penalties.Rarely in recent times have the FPs lost out in many penalty shoot outs and this was to take a familiar pattern with Gary Miller, Stevie Murdoch, Ally Wilson, Alan Patrick and David McCluskey all slotting their efforts home to send The FPs into a 2nd round tie against Eastfield AFC from Cumbernauld.

Wishaw Juniors 2 - 1 Newmains United

A larger than usual number of spectators took in the

first derby staged between the two local junior sides at The Beltane on Saturday. Newmains had come out on top in the league cup encounter just over a week ago, but this time it was the home side who ran out winners and collected the all important league points.

Wishaw were the first to show in 11 minutes, stalwart Thomas Devine saving the visitors by heading off the line with Peter Gormley beaten. The home side kept pressing and minutes later a Martin Devlin shot forced a

save from Gormley after nice work by Michael Clarke. The youngster was in good form and was ideally placed in 27 minutes to open the scoring driving the ball low and hard just inside Gormley’s right hand post. Newmains were struggling to get into the game and it took until 38 minutes before they had a serious attempt on goalwith Andrew Lee coming close with a diving header as Danny Gallacher scrambled to cover. John McEwan then had a header saved by Gormley, but despite having the bulk of the play the homesters only had the one goal to show for their

first half efforts. The second half was a more

even affair, but the visitors hopes of getting back on level terms quickly were dashed when referee McFadzean pointed to the spot after a jersey pull on Clarke as he ran in the box. Newmains’ Kristopher Frame was yellow carded for protesting too long but the delay didn’t put David Hamilton off as he stepped up to coolly slot the ball home for what would eventually prove to be the winning goal. The goal galvanised the visitors into action and the home side had to work hard to keep the visitors at bay. Newmains

thought they had pulled one back in 60 minutes after great work on the right by Kristopher Karrigan created a chance for Sean McCormack. His seemingly net bound shot was scooped off the line by Ryan Cusack and rebounded to safety off the underside of the bar. Newmains didn’t have too long to wait however, substitute Simon Pretswell driving home after the ball rebounded to him as the visitors pressed forward. The goal set up a grandstand finish as the visitors went in search of an equaliser but Wishaw held on for a hard fought victory.
