“A Good Year” as Brother Steven Ehlers ’83 reported regarding the state of Indiana Epsilon in the Spring 1984 edition of the Shield. He went on to touch on the chapter’s excitement to return to campus and shared several individual and group accomplishments – Brother Duane Davison’s win in intramural ping pong singles, Brother Scott Keegan’s second place effort in the billiards and badminton tournament, the chapter’s recognition as receiving the highest fraternity GPA for five of the last six semesters and their welcoming a pledge class of 27!

While this year, and this semester in particular, fall 2020, will be “A Good Year”, it will also be a very different year, for our undergraduates. Wearing masks, social distancing, forgoing social functions, limiting group work and study, recruiting virtually, building community without physically being together, the list of changes and challenges is significant. We are so grateful to the following donors who have committed over $2 Million to the Pride in Our Past, Foundation for the Future campaign. With your gift, you join chapter brothers across the nation in celebrating Phi Psi’s strong history at Valpo and our even greater future. Together, we are ensuring that the young men who follow in our footsteps in Indiana Epsilon have a state of the art chapter facility to learn in, lead in and call home. We have moved the needle, but additional commitments are needed to reach our campaign goal of $2,750,000.

FEATURED PHI PSI: KEVIN OLSON ’87

Kevin Olson ’87 believes fraternity life is important because it engages young men in a unique way, by helping them learn to interact and move toward a common goal. “Life is all about working with others, adapting to life changes — whether in the workplace, a marriage, raising kids, whatever it is. You’ve got to be able to communicate your thoughts and feelings.”

Arriving at Valparaiso in the late 1980s, Brother Olson was searching for that kind of opportunity. He chose Phi Kappa Psi because of the strong bond he felt among its members. “It went past ‘just friends.’ It was true brother-hood. You were never alone in your struggles.”

The best and most memorable times often happened right inside 801 Mound Street. “We had each other’s backs then, and still do now. Our chapter was about 85 men. I always felt like there was engagement by all members

when it came to managing the house and other important decisions. We were all there for each other. Even now, we reach out to each other. I talk with brothers when they need help — physical, emotional, whatever it is.”

Olson says the day-to-day interaction inside the house helped him become a better leader. “The brothers had high standards, in academ-ics and beyond. That pushed me to be better. Our members were predominantly engineering majors, who tend to be very smart and very structured with their time and thoughts. I wasn’t that same way, so that structure helped me. We would approach every project/event methodically … set goals, research costs and develop a plan for accomplishment. It taught me a lot.”

Brother Olson appreciates those brothers who came before him, men he’d never even meet, whose time and treasures provided him an enriching environment in which he grew and flourished. “I inherited that; now it’s my time to pay it forward.”

When the opportunity arose to support the Pride in Our Past, Foundation for the Future campaign, Olson said it just made sense. “I knew the guys on the committee and their effort to the campaign was well-organized. Phi Kappa Psi and the Indiana Epsilon chapter were instrumental in helping me become the person I am today. I wanted to help younger brothers have similar opportunities, so they too can come into their own.”

Brother Kevin Olson has served as a financial advisor with Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management Co. since graduating with a degree in finance in 1990. He co-founded Next Phase Advisory Group to advise clients on retirement distribution planning.

Tom Groth ’18 was destined to be a Phi Psi long before stepping foot on Valparaiso University’s campus. His three older brothers had been initiated into the brotherhood and he knew he wanted to follow in their footsteps. “My family has supported the Fraternity since my oldest brother joined in 2011,” shares Groth “I saw the bond my older brothers formed within the Fraternity and knew that was something I wanted out of my own college experience.”

Brother Groth is a senior majoring in Market-ing & Finance with a minor in Business Analyt-ics. Earlier this year, he and fellow Indiana Epsilon Phi Psis embarked on a spring break trip to Florida. Upon returning to Valparaiso, they were faced with some unexpected news. “I got back to campus with my brothers and was told I had to move out because of the corona-virus. I packed my things and moved back to Wisconsin with my family.”

Although Groth moved back to Wisconsin, his life didn’t changed much. “Luckily, I still had my sales and marketing internship with Lavelle Industries. The only thing that changed was I went into the office one day a week and worked from home the other days.” Even though he wasn’t on-campus with his brothers for the end of the semester, they stayed connected. “We hosted a couple of Google Meet calls,” shares Groth. “Our account allows us to include more people so we invite people to the calls

who would usually come to the house and hang out with the brothers.”

With the coronavirus having changed so much about how we perceive human connection and brotherhood, perhaps it is fitting that one chapter of Indiana Epsilon’s history is closing as a new one is beginning at this time. Construction is well underway on Indiana Epsilon’s new home and it should be ready to move into by the end of the fall semester. “This is an exciting new piece of history for the Indiana Epsilon chapter and it comes at a time when our generation of brothers will likely have to adapt to new norms as we continue the traditions of our fraternity,” said Groth.

Brother Groth and his chapter brothers are excited that they were able to return to campus in the fall. “I miss in-person lectures and seeing my friends on campus. I miss being able to spend the last few months with my brothers who are graduating.”

With all the unknowns in the world around him today, Groth knows what he is looking forward to – a strong future for Indiana Epsilon at Valparaiso. “I’m looking forward to living in the new chapter house and being a part of new beginnings as the house will start a new Greek row on campus and we will be right in the middle of everything.”

The Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL) Spring Service Trip is an exceptional example of the community that is built at Valpo. Students from all different fraternities and sororities spend the week together giving back to others. For the second year, the FSL Spring Service Trip traveled to Panama City, Florida to assist with Hurricane Michael recovery. This year, the team helped with the rebuild-ing of four different homes in an effort to get four families back into their homes. It was wonderful to have three members of Phi Kappa Psi (Austin Cintron ’17, Cooper Proudfoot ’19, Matthew Bickelhaupt ’18) on the trip exemplifying the meaning of The Great Joy of Serving Others.
