April 2012 The Rundown On Members “Woodstock Runners invades Canberra” could well have been the headline of The Canberra Times last weekend. 20 Woodies headed down Saturday morning on Joe’s bus with our new “Woodstock Runners” signs decorating each side. We cheered on our members, along with every other runner in the 10k, Saturday arvo, then enjoyed dinner for around 30 of us in the evening. Sunday saw most of us taking part in the Half, Marathon or Ultra, with cheering provided by Saturday’s runners. Lunch at a Lake George winery on the way home was delicious and completed a fabulous weekend. Each of us is most appreciative of the incredible efforts of Angela in organising such a brilliant weekend. Thanks Angela and congrats on your PB. Joe’s great driving is always a highlight, along with his camaraderie (and muffins). Martin’s comedy throughout the weekend is a source of amusement for all and he is also a top barracker. Congratulations to everyone on their runs, especially Kathryn and Frank who ran wonderful times in their debut Marathons; Tym, a top debut Ultra Marathon; and lots who recorded PBs. Thanks to fellow members who sent good wishes via Facebook. All results are later in this Rundown. Now over to France where Chris ran 3.20 in Sunday’s Paris Marathon, a great effort, Chris and a just reward for all your training. Now you and Jess can enjoy a wonderful holiday. To Italy and we eagerly await news from Brendan’s race in the World 100km Championship next Sunday, where he will represent Australia. Good luck Brendan and the Australian team. John Dawlings is opening up his new home in Birchgrove to host a Breakfast Run on Sunday April 29. More details further on. It’s a great way to catch up with fellow members whom you may not meet on regular runs. Thursday next week will be TNT’s 2nd 5km Time Trial for the year and Tuesday May 8 is our AGM which is an opportunity for everyone to offer suggestions etc to benefit your Club. Hope to see lots of people at these events. We welcome a number of new members in the last month and trust you will enjoy your time with Woodstock Runners, improve your running and produce some PBs in the foreseeable future. Letter from the editorLetter from the editorLetter from the editorLetter from the editor Dear Woordstock Runners,

What a good team effort at the Australian Running Festival down Canberra!! So much Pbs!

Also fresh from the press, congratulations to Brendan Davies who placed 11th at the 100KM Ultra-Running World Championships at Italy! Such a good inspiration to the club..

Weather has already changed and the DST has been reverted back, its been mix feeling and or adapting running in the dark, in a colder temperature or in the rain lately. We will be seeing number of us again doing some races. And there are some number of out-of-town trips runs with Joe's Woodland tours being organized. Please read through the newsletter for details.

I'm attending an 8 week running coach session from a voucher I got drawn from a Sri Chinmoy race. Let's see how it goes and I will try to learn and absorb what's coached and would love to share it to the interested members :). -Editor

Race ReviewRace ReviewRace ReviewRace Review: Australian Running Festival: Australian Running Festival: Australian Running Festival: Australian Running FestivalBy: Sandra Bogun

After a full trip to Orange the month before it was no surprise that there was a full bus heading to

Canberra and a large contingent making their own way down. We were away on time, mindful of those

on board who would be running later that day. First stop was meant to be Goulburn but Chia got to do

some impromptu hill training before we were halfway there. El Prez had a second sound machine to

entertain us with but the “undies” incident was the highlight of the morning!

A good trip after lunch saw us in Canberra by 1.30, unfortunately a little too late to see Fiona run the

5km race, but the thought that we might just be watching kept her motivated and she did a PB. After

dropping everyone at the various hotels and apartments it was off to collect race packs for some, to buy

beer for others and the last of us to secure pole position at the finish line with the Woodstock sign.

Marty was our next runner in the 10km dash, it is a great course for spectators with runners passing the

finish area a total of four times in the run. Our favorite runner was a dashing young man dressed in a

blue wig, blouse and skirt and two strategically placed balloons to complete the outfit, it didn’t affect his

running and he finished 5th overall, Marty coming in shortly after.

Terry, Dot and Maree headed off at 4pm for the 10km fun run, thankful that it was not as hot as last

year’s Saturday races had been.

Dinner was a lively affair with all the self drive runners and the Blackwell family joining in and the

restaurant managed to feed us all in a little over an hour despite being packed to the rafters. Angela

had arranged cake and candles so we could celebrate Frank’s birthday which he thought he had managed

to keep secret.

I was in what had been termed the “oldies” unit with Teresa, Graham, Lawrence, Maree, Kevin, Joe and

Therese but that didn’t stop us have some after dinner fun culminating in a lively discussion about where

to carry gels (the little pocket in the back of the running shorts was the obvious choice) and various

vasaline techniques for the boys.

It was very welcome the next morning to see that we were not going to get wet this year, it was in fact

a perfect day for running with a gentle cool breeze and some cloud cover. A short walk to the start line

and we soon found the other runners for some pre race well wishes, especially for our debut marathoners

Kath and Frank. It was a beautiful run and the sights of Canberra were well showcased, early morning

mist over the lake, hot air balloons above, rowers on the river and a good crowd out, but none better

than the Woodstock cheer squad who were larger and loader than anyone else.

The great conditions saw PBs for Sandra, Angela, Lawrence, Graeme, Bridget and Chaia in the half

marathon, excellent marathon results of 3:45 for Frank and 3.50 for Kath (who was sporting a head

cold), Tym completing the 50km and a PB on his Marathon distance and Jeff finishing his 53rd marathon.

The club was certainly well represented with someone taking part in each of the six running festival

events. Early finishers had time to get back to the apartments to shower, change, sympathise with Joe

who had not taken note of the lubing advice from the night before, pick up a cold beer and make it back

in time to cheer on the marathon runners. Once we had seen our last runner across the line it was on

the bus and heading for lunch.

We returned to the Lerida Estate vineyard for some pre meal wine tasting and lunch and managed to

pick up a few bottles to bring on home. The plan was to drive non stop back to Sydney but a few of us

didn’t make it and there was a second hills training session on the way back – much more difficult to

complete after a race I can tell you!

Thank you to Angela for the organisation and Joe and Therese for getting us there and back safely. If

you have not been on a Woodies weekend away before there are several more being planned – see the

notice in this rundown.

Woodies around the world

Member's ProfileName: Chris Lawrence

What is your occupation? Physiotherapist/Traveller

Running age group? Young enough not to have a category yet!

Do you have family? Yes! My wife Jess, my parents and one younger sister.

My Dad is a runner too. His one piece of running advice to run the perfect

marathon: "Start slowly and then taper off"

How long have you been a Woody? About 6 months

Why do you enjoy running? I find it very freeing. It's a great way to unwind

and a great way to work towards a goal. And of course the social aspect is

awesome!

What is your favourite running distance, course, event and why? I'm

scarily beginning to like half marathons- long enough to be a big challenge while

still being able to walk the next day!

What has been your running highlights? Definitely finishing the two marathons

to date!

Any lowlights (injury etc)? Thankfully none yet! I'm told physios aren't meant

to be injured!

What was the last race you went in and how did you go? Paris Marathon- one

day ago, still recovering.

Anything funny/unusual ever happened to you while you have been out

running? When I was in high school I went in a fun run near my house, so I cycled there. It was sponsored by

the local hardware store, I managed to win one of the spot prizes, which strangely enough was a ladder. Not

easy to take home on a bike. I rang Mum to pick me up and she laughed because she thought I was making up a

ridiculous excuse to get picked up because I was tired after the race!

What other sports/hobbies are you involved in? I play touch rugby

Favourite food/beverage? Either Mum's home made lasagne or a nice cold apple cider

Where would your ideal holiday be? Turkey- I think its the most ideal blend of amazing history, culture and

food

Interesting things we may not know about you? I have one toe on each foot that has never touched the

ground. Maybe its slowing me down?

What's your current running goal? Very good question. I'm still in the post-marathon I never want to run

again in my life phase. Give me a few days and I might have discovered something new to work towards! Thanks Frank for sharing! Hope the Canberra training is going well! - Ed.

Brendan Davies in Turkey: L: Another day another beautiful run, this time around the Fairy Chimneys of Cappadocia— in Göreme. R: Running around Pamukkale, Turkey - UNESCO World heritage site, Calcite Terraces — at Pamukkale.

Would be VERY, VERY, VERY grateful if you could reply ASAP. It makes my life so much easier, please do not rock up on the night as it is so messy for all Vollies helping out.

Leading into, and asking for anyone who is unable/not planning to race/has a running widow, VOLLIES are needed to help with lap counting and timing. Not least also to encourage your fellow Woodies! If you’re able to help that would be awesome, again please let me know. You’ll get special mention and thank you, not least Km’s for Logbook awards!

100K World Champs - The Main Contenders100K World Champs - The Main Contenders100K World Champs - The Main Contenders100K World Champs - The Main ContendersBy: Brendan Davies

Thanks to it being de rigueur to be a runner and have a blog these days, I've been able to track down some of the entrants for the World Champs. Looks like it will be very competitive at the pointy end. I'm not in the same ballpark as some of these guys, but it will be great watching some of them sail off into the distance.

The US have an extremely strong team, made up of seasoned trail and road ultra runners. They have the benefit of regularly racing over the 50 mile distance (80k), a popular distance in the imperial system USA. Here are the main contenders:

Giorgio Calcaterra (ITA) - The reigning 100k World Champ, World Ultra Runner of the Year and an astonishing athlete. Just a quick browse on his blog left me pretty speechless. In 2000, he ran 16 marathons under 2:20. He has a marathon PB of 2:13 and a 100k PB of 6:25. He won last year's World Champs by 15 minutes; that's how dominant he is over the distance. Will definitely be the favourite on his home soil.

Mike Wardian (USA) - 2nd at last year's World's; this guy races everything from 100mile trails to marathons dressed as Spiderman. Has a schedule this year that leaves any runner green with envy; Comrades, Western States and UTMB!!! Geesh.

Andy Henshaw (USA) - 3rd at last year's Worlds; young trail runner who likes to run 150 mile weeks in the build up to big races. Yikes!!

Pieter Vermeesch (BEL) - 4th at last year's Worlds; seems to be getting faster the older he gets according to his very detailed progression charts on his blog. Is surprising himself and is harbouring hopes of getting the A qualifier to run for Belgium at the Olympics. Good on him.

The IAU have released the complete starters list for Sunday's race. Which you can find here: http://www.iau-ultramarathon.org/images/file/2012%20IAU%20100K%20WORLD%20CHAMPIONSHIPS%20PEFS%20AND%20FEFS%20120411(1).xlsx

Apart from the big names already mentioned in the previous post, it was very pleasing to see the Greek God of Ultrarunning (he's an Aussie too!), Yiannis Kouris in the field. If you don't know about Yiannis' achievements in the sport of Ultrarunning, you must check them out. Some phenomenal achievements, especially on the road and the track. In the women's field, UKs Lizzie Hawker will be the one to watch but there are so many other fast European ladies in the field as well.

I've had a very busy taper period. For the last week and a half I've been travelling around Turkey with Nadine. We have been to so many places and seen so many wonderful things, so lots of walking around. I've been able to fit in some 1 hour runs on most days. There have been some very memorable runs and I believe running around a foreign land is the best way to see the country and the sights. I've taken my camera out on most runs and captured some fantastic scenery and culture. Some of the highlights have been running along the Mamara Sea coast in Istanbul, running through the lunar landscape of Cappodocia and I've even managed a few little mountain runs in too.

Turkey is a fabulous place to travel. One reason is the food. I've been really impressed by the local diet; all fresh food; fish, lamb, salads, olives, tea, bread, fruit and very little alcohol, fast food or sugar. On the whole I've eaten very well and am actually the lightest I've been in a long time-perfect for a big race. However the temptations, especially in Istanbul are all around! This is the land of Kebabs (locally Kebaps), baklava, and Turkish Delights.

Tomorrow, I leave for Italy and race headquarters in Seregno will be the first stop before heading to the athletes village. Then I will start my carbo-loading and final preparations for the race. I still have the goal of a sub 7 hour time very much in mind.Note: Follow Brendan's running at http://runmrd.blogspot.com/

Temptations are everywhere!

Paris MarathonParis MarathonParis MarathonParis Marathon: A Marathon Effort: A Marathon Effort: A Marathon Effort: A Marathon EffortBy: Chris Lawrence

Let me say to begin with: Paris gets cold. Really cold. As I left our apartment on marathon morning it was a mere 6 degrees, and I was looking ridiculous. I hadn’t organised a bag for the official baggage transfer, so I was wearing my running gear, a hugely oversized white plastic poncho for warmth, and a Paris Marathon-branded bandana tube that could be used to warm the neck or rob a bank to equal effect. As a side note, I have another three of these bandana things; if you’re robbing a bank anytime soon, let me know.

You can follow Chris and Jess at: http://singaporetosantiago.blogspot.fr/

The race started near the Arc de Triomphe on Champs de Elysees. What a beautiful place to run! Off we went: me and 43,000 others. The atmosphere during the run was just electric, with thousands and thousands of Parisians shouting, singing and playing music along the way. There were lots of local French bands playing their music, electronic DJs and a slightly bizarre man dressed in a joker suit yelling out some Lady Gaga.

My aim was to finish in 3 hours 20 mins, but I thought that anything under 3.30 would be pretty good. The only other time I had done a marathon had taken 3 hours 57 mins, so I was keen to take a good chunk off this. The first 20 kilometres were extremely enjoyable - no pain, no discomfort and great sights everywhere. Over the next 17kms the pain started setting in but I got a great

lift at the 35km mark from seeing Jess cheering for me and simultaneously being given 3 cubes of sugar! Terrible for my teeth but GREAT for my energy levels! The last 4km were really hard work; I knew I was close but there were lots of people stopping to stretch or to have a rest. It looked so tempting, but thought if I stopped I would probably never start again! I managed to do what felt like a lightning fast last kilometre to finish in 3.20.51. Absolutely stoked!!

a nightmare! We don’t have cellphones to contact each other, and the marathon organisers had decided not to have any signs for the “meeting area” that had been discussed in the pre-marathon guide. Our backup option was for both of us to take the train home separately...but I had dropped my train ticket at kilometre 3. I HAD to find her! After 40 long and very cold minutes searching through literally tens of thousands of people, we finally found each other. I told her that I’d never been so happy to see her. On came the beanie, the extra layers of clothes and a greatly deserved chicken kebab. And then a hot chocolate. And then a chicken wrap and chips. And then tiramisu. I slept absolutely amazingly that night; the only slight problem was needing help to get out of bed the next morning.

A word of post-marathon advice: walking down two flights of stairs carrying a 23kg backpack to exacerbate my excruciating leg pain is not to be recommended. I guess I’ll just consider it to be my reminder of a great achievement!
