CALL TO WORSHIP • 1 Chronicles 16:8-11 Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name;

make known his deeds among the peoples! Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works!

Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice! Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually!

“If sovereignty is defined by human experience apart from Jesus, then the slogan ‘Make Jesus king’ becomes a blasphemous attempt to co-opt the sovereign power of God for corrupt human ambitions. Amazing Grace Text: John Newton • Music: American Melody • Public Domain

’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved; how precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares, I have already come; ’tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me, his Word my hope secures; he will my Shield and Portion be, as long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail, and mortal life shall cease, I shall possess, within the veil, a life of joy and peace.

When we’ve been there ten thousand years, bright shining as the sun, we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise than when we’d first begun.

PRAYER OF INVOCATION He is risen! He is risen indeed! Let us pray…

CALL TO CONFESSION OF SIN • Luke 23:34

Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

CONFESSION OF SIN Father, Son, and Spirit—our Triune God—you are the only true and living God. We know that you alone are good, yet we still turn to false gods for strength, for pleasure, for comfort, for life. But this is death. We confess that we have sinned, both in the evil we have done, and in the good we have done in order to avoid you. We do not know all the ways our hearts are far from you; we have deceived ourselves. We cannot even confess every sin, or know all our false gods, to turn away from them to you. We are utterly at your mercy. O Lord Jesus, be gracious to us. O Father, assure us of your love that makes all things new. O Holy Spirit, dwell in us and have your way with us. We pray in Christ our Savior. Amen.

(Silent confession)

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS • Luke 24:46-47 “Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and on the third day rise from the dead, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations.”

May the peace of Christ be with you. And also with you!

OFFERING • Malachi 3:10

“Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.”

DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow! Praise him, all creatures here below! Praise him above, ye heavenly host! Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost! Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT READING • Zechariah 9:9-12

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray…

Through Jesus, whom we confess as Lord, we give thanks and praise to the Father, calling on him who is judge of all: Father, your kingdom come.

For all the peoples of the world; that they may know you as the God of peace, we pray to you, O Lord: Father, your kingdom come.

For nations, leaders and governments; that integrity may mark all their dealings, we pray to you O Lord: Father, your kingdom come.

For all who labor for righteousness; that your presence and help may give them courage, we pray to you, O Lord: Father, your kingdom come.

For communities torn by dissension and strife; that your forgiveness may bring them healing, we pray to you, O Lord: Father, your kingdom come.

For the anxious, the lonely, the bereaved; that consolation and peace may be theirs, we pray to you, O Lord: Father, your kingdom come.

For the Church, your household and family; that she may be firm in the confession of her hope, we pray to you, O Lord: Father, your kingdom come.

For our pastor, and for all who bear Christ’s name; that their lives may proclaim your glory, we pray to you, O Lord: Father, your kingdom come.

O God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep: make us perfect in all goodness to do your will and to be what you would have us be; through him to whom be glory forever, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Love of God Music and Lyrics by F. M. Lehman (1917) • Public Domain

Could we with ink the ocean fill, and were the skies of parchment made, were every stalk on earth a quill, and every man a scribe by trade,

to write the love of God above, would drain the ocean dry. Nor could the scroll contain the whole, though stretched from sky to sky.

O love of God, how rich and pure! How measureless and strong! It shall forevermore endure—the saints and angel’s song!

The Lamb Has Overcome Music and Lyrics: Luke Morton • ©2011 Cardiphonia Music

The table now is spread, the table now is spread; the wine and bread, broken body and blood shed, the table now is spread.

The day is drawing near, the day is drawing near; he shall appear and wipe away each tear, the day is drawing near!

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, glory be unto his name! Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, glory be unto his name!

(Repeat Chorus)

GOSPEL READING • John 12:12-23 The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. 13 So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet him, crying out, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel!” 14 And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, 15 “Fear not, daughter of Zion; behold, your king is coming, sitting on a donkey’s colt!” 16 His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about him and had been done to him. 17 The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. 18 The reason why the crowd went to meet him was that they heard he had done this sign. 19 So the Pharisees said to one another, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him.” 20 Now among those who went up to worship at the feast were some Greeks. 21 So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. 23 And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.”

The Gospel of Jesus Christ. Praise be to you, O Christ!

T H E U PP ER ROOM

CONFESSION OF FAITH • The Apostles’ Creed What do you believe?

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He *

ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the †

forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PASSING OF THE PEACE • Colossians 3:15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.

(Greet one another with the words, “The peace of Christ be with you.”)

INVITATION TO THE LORD’S TABLE AND PRAYER

WORDS OF INSTITUTION • 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

THE MYSTERIUM FIDEI • 1 Corinthians 11:26; 5:7-8

Let us proclaim the mystery of faith. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast.

The gifts of God for the people of God.

GIVING OF THE BREAD AND CUP (All who confess faith in Jesus Christ may partake of this Sacrament: baptized members of a congregation that proclaims the Gospel, who are at peace with God and with their brothers and sisters in Christ, and who seek God’s grace to live more faithfully for him in this world. Please come forward after the musicians. The glasses on your right contain grape juice for those who do not want wine. There are gluten-free crackers on the table. An Elder is available for prayer upon request [James 5:13-16].)

When the Creed states that Jesus “descended into hell,” we understand it to mean that he suffered the *

holy wrath of God for the sins of his people.

Or, “universal.”†

A Hymn To God The Father A Poem by John Donne • Music: Matthew H. Curl • Used by Permission

Wilt thou forgive that sin which I have won others to sin, and made my sin their door? Wilt thou forgive that sin which I did shun

a year or two, but wallow’d in a score?

When thou hast done, thou hast not done, for I have more, I have more. (2x)

I have a sin of fear that when I’ve spun my last thread, I shall perish on the shore;

but swear by thyself, that at my death thy sun shall shine as he shines now, and heretofore.

And, having done that, thou hast done. I fear no more. I fear no more. (2x)
