MAN/YOUTH OF THE YEAR DINNER
WORLD WIDE
WRAP
1
A Sacred Story Concludes All year we are studying the content
of the Torah in many ways: ongoing classes, shorter or even single-session units, brief discussions after
morning or evening services, and here, in my monthly article. In previous articles, I have described
the content of the first four books of the Torah; we continue this month with a summary of the fifth and last
of its books, Deuteronomy – Devarim. Much of my summary here is taken from the Jewish
Publication Society (JPS) Commentary on Deuteronomy, which I strongly recommend to anyone who wants a deeper understanding of
the book than I can relate in this short space. On one level, much of the book is a repetition
or re-stating of the Israelites’ journey from Egypt to the edge of Canaan. Moses reminds the people of the many incidents that have
taken place, and repeats many of the earlier laws, including a slightly emended version of aseret hadibrot, the Ten Commandments. The
book concludes with the Song of Moses, a poem that prophesies the future of the Israelite tribes, and an account of Moses’
death. But beyond the narrative, there are a number of features of Devarim that mark the book as distinct from earlier books of the
Torah.
Devarim conceives of God in far less literal and physical terms than the earlier books. Instead of referring to God dwelling in the mishkan, the Tabernacle in the wilderness,
Devarim speaks of God’s name being present there. In its version of aseret hadibrot,
Devarim omits the earlier description of God resting on Shabbat, instead emphasizing the day’s importance for people and as a reminder
of coming out of Egypt. In short, the book emphasizes God’s transcendence rather than God’s immanence. In addition, the concept of covenant, or brit, comes to the fore in Devarim
far more than in any other book. While the idea of being in a sacred partnership with God
can be found in all books of the Torah, it
appears with great frequency here
as a way of confirming the legal responsibilities of the Israelites to perform God’s will.
The role of the sacrificial cult also undergoes a dramatic change as
envisioned in Devarim. While earlier books seem to assume that there will be local shrines throughout the
land of Canaan, Devarim decrees that there will be only one, which will later be revealed to
be Jerusalem. This had enormous consequences for the social, religious, and economic structure of the country and de-
emphasized the role of the priesthood outside of the actual Temple rites. And, more so than in any other book of Torah, Devarim displays a
concern for the poor, widows, orphans, those in debt, and those held as slaves.
Devarim’s style also differs from the other books. While Moses does recall what has happened to the people up to this point, his
words are not simply a retelling of events, but a recasting of them. Instead of merely repeating a story, Moses explains the meaning
of the experiences, consistently reminding the people of the purpose of what has happened to them and what will shortly be expected of
them when they enter Canaan.
The history and development of the book – why it is the way it is from an historical perspective – is beyond the scope of this
article. Suffice to say that Devarim is very much a product of a changing society and that it attempts to shape those changes in ways
that bind Israel’s destiny to God’s ongoing demands and promises protection and a sacred relationship with God in return.

EDUCATION
Unlike other serious observances on the Jewish calendar, Purim serves as a relief from the stresses of life. It is a time for joyous celebration in our community. It’s a chance to cut loose. We make noise, parade in costumes and even bend the rules. Nevertheless, Purim emphasizes the idea of tzedakah. While tzedakah is practiced all year long, Purim is the one holiday in which we are reminded of our responsibility to those who are less fortunate. The mitzvot of Matanot L’Evyonim – giving gifts to the poor – and Mishloach Manot – sending gifts – are specifically mentioned in Book of Esther. Chapter 9 verse 22 states,
“Just as in the days when Jews found relief from their enemies, in the month that was transformed from one of grief into one of happiness and from mourning into a holidays; they are to be made into days of festivities, happiness, sending gifts to one another and giving presents to the poor.”
Here are some ideas how to fulfill the mitzvot of Matanot L’Evyonim and Misloach Manot: 1. Make some hamantashen or cookies and deliver them to a center for the homeless. 2. Make food baskets and take them to needy families. 3. Create gift packages for particular institutions such as assisted living facilities, shelters for battered
women, homeless shelters, and/or children in the hospital. a. Assisted living facility: items such as plants, photo frames, bath products, games b. Shelter for battered women: items such as toys, books, adult clothing, children clothing,
videos, music CD’s c. Homeless shelter: items such as toiletries, resume paper, clothes d. Children in hospital: toys, books, games, CD’s, dolls, stuffed animals or stickers
4. Begin a canned and/or boxed food collection and donate to the local food pantry. 5. Go to a homeless shelter and volunteer your serves there for a few hours. 6. Discuss what each member of your family would like to donate to a needy family. Then bring these
items to family, friends, hospitals, and old age facilities. Most of all remember that Purim is a FUN holiday for all of us. Purim is supposed to make us playful. We play in a theatrical sense, donning masks and stepping out of character. It’s our chance to act like kids. Dress up in costume, twirl the grogger during the Megillah reading and let Purim bring your adult world a little closer to your child’s world! May your Purim be merry, and may it be enriched with the joy of giving and sharing! Sisterhood Update - February 2015
We were delighted and grateful that at our
February Sisterhood board meeting, our
synagogue member and guest speaker, Julie
Korol, talked to us about Chai Lifeline, an
organization that addresses the emotional, social,
and financial needs of seriously ill children, their
families, and communities. Chai Lifeline's uplifting
work does so much to offer support them and to
help create a positive mindset during the recovery
process.
Sisterhood's Nominating Committee is meeting
this month, so if you or someone you know would
be interested in serving on our board and/or if
there is a position in which you might be
interested, please contact Rhonda Cohen.
We have so much fun when we get together! We
had a delightful meeting chaired by Kitty Hoffman
to make matzah covers - sort of like an old-
fashioned quilting bee. Kitty also hosted our
February 17th Schmooze Night. Additionally,
Sisterhood sponsored a February 21 Nosh-A-
Night, which was similar to a progressive dinner.
AND...Renee Kaplan gave a series of 4 Mah
Jongg lessons, and if you missed this first series
she is willing to repeat it.
Our Women's Seder is Monday, March 16, with
check-in starting at 6:00 pm at Beth Judea. The
theme is "A Celebration of Israel,” and a traditional
Passover dinner will be served. The cost is $25 for
Sisterhood members and $30 for non-members
ages 13 and up. In order for us to be fully
prepared, the RSVP deadline is 3/6/15. Kindly E-
mail Carole Hirsch at [email protected] with

Twenty nine men attended the recent post-Shabbat Men’s Club retreat at the Geneva
Ridge Resort in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. We learned about our Jewish rituals, prayers, Israel, Men’s Club, and something about each
other. Most of all, we had fun! Almost half of those who participated in the retreat were responsible for some part of the planning or
programming for the retreat. This is what Men’s Club is about – engagement. We aim to have each member of our group feel that they
are an integral part of the community that is formed by Men’s Club: Jewish men involved in Jewish life. Although space won’t allow me to
name all of those who participated in the planning of the retreat, I want to express my
thanks to Norm Kurtz, whose vision turned this into a reality. Yasher Koach!
Men’s Club will be packing Yom Hashoah
Yellow candles on Sunday, March 15. Routes will be mapped out and distributed to our members, who will deliver the candles to most
of the members of Congregation Beth Judea. This process will be similar to how the
Hanukkah candles were distributed. The Federation of Jewish Men’s Club is also sponsoring a Yom Hashoah Yellow Candle
design contest open to all those between the ages 13 -18 whose parents are members of Congregation Beth Judea. First prize is $500
and having your design appear on the candles next year. There will also be prizes for second and third place. Please see the attached flyer.
On March 22, Men’s Club and Sisterhood will
cosponsor our annual Passover Wine Tasting. The turnout last year was high and we hope that this years’ turnout will be even better. Let
us prove to you that good Passover wine is not an oxymoron.
Men’s Club Shabbat is scheduled for March 28, 2015. In the past, Men’s Club Shabbat has
been meaningful, spiritual, and fun! Last year, over thirty men participated in the service. Please consider volunteering for a part in the
service and attending Men’s Club Shabbat. Depending on your skills and comfort level, you can do as much or as little as you would
like. If you have not yet been contacted, please email Lou Rabin [email protected] who is coordinating Men’s Club Shabbat.
Play ball! Pitchers and catchers for both Chicago baseball teams reported to spring training on February 19-20. Baseball season is just around the corner. The Congregation Beth Judea Men’s Club Softball team, led by Coach Harris, is in the process of returning to another season of championship softball. Contact Allen Harris at [email protected] if you would like to play for a winning team. You must be a member of Men’s Club in order to play.
Save the date. On April 26, Men’s Club will sponsor a Craft Beer and Burger dinner at Congregation Beth Judea. More information will be available soon.

in Israel through the blog.
In this issue, they give us an update on the Israeli election process and tell us
about the Druze in Israel.

HESED (CARING) COMMITTEE
The Hesed committee would like to know if you have any
difficulties/problems that you would like to discuss with a
knowledgeable individual. We have a group of
congregants who have been trained or are professionals
who would be able to provide a brief consultation with you
in order to refer you on for more in-depth assistance. We
are also thinking about starting some support groups. We
would like to know what you feel your needs are. Please
email Ellene Lammers at [email protected] or call
Rabbi Pivo.

SHALVA
“Its okay, the children aren’t effected” But what if you knew they were? Shalva clients will often say that they can withstand their husband’s abuse as long as he never directs his anger toward their children. What many women don’t understand is that children are the silent victims of abuse and that they often repeat the behaviors they have seen. According to a recent study, over 90% of children are aware of domestic abuse in their home. These children are affected emotionally, cognitively, and physically. They are at great risk and often experience low self-esteem, shame, fear and guilt. Many distrust adults, fail to thrive or suffer from depression and anxiety. What can we do? The issue of domestic abuse is not just a women’s issue; it affects the entire family as well as our Jewish community. SHALVA offers free counseling to Jewish women who are or were in an intimate partner relationship. If you or someone you know needs our help, call 773-583-4673.
WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records. Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff.
We Would Like To Know
We firmly believe that reaching out to others benefits not only the recipient, but the person providing help as well. This is, without a doubt, a win-win situation for all involved.
If you are interested in making a difference, please contact one of the Hesed (Caring) committee members below:
