T he dual wiwe~s of this pamphlet is therefore the precise pole111ic tllcthod that h:-ts been accepted in our circles for a h undred years and more- on " Baptism", "Music", and th e like: to ascerta in and ex-~ hiiJit the faith and practice of the church in its purest cenwries; ·and then (or vice versa) to d 1eck our findings by the \ '\'onl of God . \Ve doubt that many. if any, who read this pamphlet with an honest lt can. and with the Bib le beside them as they read, will longer IH· incli ned to dispute the main thesis: That through the lirst and purc:-. t c e tlluries, the church he ld firm ly and una ni mously to the premillen-nial view and au iwde; that d isciples were later led to other view-, h\' heretical te:lchcrs-tha t is, by teachers who were admi ttedly heTeti-i{'al on other ftmdnmefltol gospel lines; and tha t the earl y church was prentill cnninl wholl y on the ground of apostolic tc<td ting. This is a question whid1 is ~ometime~ asked by those who oppose the teach ing o( prophecy. I f it is answered " no," one usually he:u·-,, "Then why don't yo u ~top teaching prophecy?" According to tlli ~ line of reasoning, all in the Bible that is not cssemial tO sa lvation wuld be safely discarded. H we supply that test to the whole Bible. how mud1 do you think we would find to be "essen tial to sa lvation"( When we really ~top to think about it, a very small portion of th<' Scripture~. might su llic c ln bring the 11inners w Christ.

Then to what end was the rest of the Bible written? And why i:. a th ird of it devoted to prophecy? Paul te lls us in 2 T im. 3 :1 6, 17: "Every . scripltlrc inspired of ~od is :dso pr~fita l~le _for ~caching, for n:prool, for c orTecuon, tor llhtrucuon wh1ch IS 111 n ghteousnc!.': lltat the:: man of Cod may be complete, furni shed completely unto t·wry good work." While men quibble over !tow little a man may l..no1\f and yet uc saved, Cod lays plans to completely fumish tht· < :hriHia n lllll<l every good W()l' k. T o this e nd he includes the pro· ph ctic scriptures in I lis "every scripture"; who ant 1 to queslion I lis wisdom? If 1 c:uliHJt arrive at an understandi ng of God's purpose, the n let me be content at least to "read a nd keep" (Rev. I :3) the thing-:. written.

T o Paul's :.tateme11t Peter atld~ : "And we have the word of prophecy made more :>~1re: whereunto ye do well that ye take heed. :t~> unto a lamp shi n ing in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the tlay·star ari~c in your hearts" (2 Pet. I : I 9) . The Christian who wa lks withotll a knowledge of prophet:y is depriving hi mselr or lil{h t lor the da.rk places of life. Oh yes, he may "get by" without prophecy

111any have, for God is truly g racious to His childre n. But i( ot.her:; thwugh ignorance have missed God 's fullest blessing, does that mean that I ~hould rlo\e Ill)' eye~ and reful>c to see? Most of us could dt i~t: at night without u:.ing our headlights, but wouldn't that hl' jt"t a bit foolish. ~eei ng our cat'} are equipped to li$ht the way? Cod has given u:., in I I i~ word of pro phecy, a light shinmg in a <l:lrk place. Let us not de:.pisc the g ift nor the wisdom which prompted it.

The prophetic port ions of Lhe :Bible will never be anything but a !.ltunbl ing-block tO th e person who approaches them with the attiwde of ' 'They're not essential," or ' 'They cannot be understood.'' l .ouk to then1 in the eamest convictio n that here is part of Cod'!\ lunti~hings unto a comple te life, and sec how they ope n tO you! THE UNBALANCED PICTURE . \ ni~ts early learn that th eir work n1mt be properly balanced.

One ol the firs t triumphs of the R en ai!>sa nce was the perfect appre· hension o f the principle th:n all o f the e lcnJc rn s of " picture had w he tied togeth er by lin es or s igln ~>O tha t the eye wou ld not have a

The same prin ciple is true in the preaching and thinking of many C hristians. T here is some sma ll lack of balance, something left o ut o f the picture that g ives a di to n ed perspective. With some it is the 0111 iss ion o r the doctrine of the second COlli i t•g or C hris t. Salvatio n may be faithfu ll y portrayed, but the wh o le prcscn wtion seems planless and nimlcss. Suu·tl i ng figures ha vc been prescn ted wit ic-h ~hould r a usc us to be alarmed. Reports indicate that suicide ranks firth in frequenc} as a cause of death among young folks in the age bracket of 15-19 years. Tn 1951, 361 adolescents lost their lives in this way and it is fel t tha t many other cases have not been reported. This is more than the number that died from polio, from pneumoni a, leukemia. or wberculosis. - Selected.

WHY? - Why this startling figure or lCen-agc suicide cases? At the age when young people should be reali1.ing the nteaning and purpose of life they are lost in despair because life to them has no 111eaning. When they should be entering into the joy and blessing of a life that is fruitful and worthwhile they art rather going out imo a miserable eternity of destruction. Why? Because tO them life really has no purpose or meaning, neith er does it ho ld any joy m· happiness. This because they don't know "The \\fay, The Truth, and The ! .ire." Without Him who alone can g ive true mea ning and purpose to lift: there can be no joy, no p t:atc. Apart from Him life is Jllisery and death is destrucLion. And our youth :.re fai ling 10

SOME STUPENDOUS CLAIMS OF JESUS The apostle .John has rc.:conlcd Millie amazing- dain1s that Jesus

made lor ll imscll- claim.s which. if made by an ordinary man. \\;ould he taken as evidence either of gros:. conceit or of an unbalanced mind. In deed o n o ne occasion man y of the J ews expressed thi~ opiuion : " li e hns a dcn1on and is mad ('disordered in m in d'); why do you Ji,tcn to him?" But others took a con trary view, for which they gave two rea~ons: "The c are not the words of o ne possessed by a demon; '' and "A demon cannot o pen the eyes o( blind men. can it?" (John 10:20-2 1. in <1 more li teral translation.) The teach· ing of Jc.:..,m docs indeed furnish convincing testimony tO His s:wity: a nd Hi!. lite of lowliness among men of low degree precludes the idea or conceit. It is the purpose of t his stud y w consider brie fl y the ' ignificance of some of thc~e cla ims, particularly in \' iew of the speci;d \'tllpha~i~ given thc.:m in the Greek.

W hat .J esus tncam was that the mamtennnce or ltfe depends upon llim, and upon H im alone. This is made emphatic by ll is usc use of the p<nonal pronoun . For in a simple affirma tion in the Greek language the fonn of the verb was suffictcnt to indicate whether the subject was the :.pc.:akcr or speakers (I or we), or son1e o ne e lse (you, he . they, CI C'.) . The pronoun corresponding LO our " I" o r "you'' was u:.ed only for empltasi. or contrast. .J esus used it here, thus g iving greater ~~ rc:.!> w the f:~ct that He. and none other, is that which ~u :. tain~ life.
