LENT PENANCE†PRAYER†FASTING†ABSTINENCE†ALMSGIVING

Prayer, fasting, abstinence and almsgiving, are the traditional

disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should under-

take these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of

preparation for Baptism or of renewal of Baptism at Easter.

Penance is a spiritual discipline that controls the passions of

the body and frees our souls for prayer. Refraining from meat

and additional pleasures, mortifies our sensual desires and al-

lows us to focus on our true desire of union with Christ. Con-

sider abstaining from your favorite foods, beverages, or amuse-

ments during Lent.

Prayer raises our hearts and minds to God in thanksgiving and

praise. During Lent, we place special emphasis on prayer and

contemplation on the Passion and Death of our Lord. Consider

a retreat or a book of spiritual writings by one of the saints.

Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age and older, who

have not yet celebrated their 60th birthday. On a fast days

(Ash Wednesday & Good Friday) one full meal is allowed. Two other

meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according

to each one's needs, but together they should not equal a full

meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are

allowed.

Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On

days of abstinence (every Friday of Lent) no meat is allowed. When

health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law

does not oblige.

Almsgiving is the foundational call of Christians to charity.

During Lent, we are asked to focus more intently on donating

money or goods to the poor and performing other acts of char-

ity. The Rice Bowl is a perfect opportunity for almsgiving.

A message from Fr. Horacio — Mensaje del Padre Horacio

Thirst For God

Exhausted from his journey, Jesus sits next to a

well and asks for water. He does not care that the

person who is near the well was a woman, with

whom a Jewish man should not converse. He does

not care that she is a Samaritan; she is also

thirsty. She has many questions about God; about

when and where he should be honored; about the true

religion; and she also has great secrets that Jesus

knows as well as she does.

Thirst is one of the most distressing feelings that

one can have. On a very hot day, a glass of water or

a shower is the best thing one can

have. But, like the Samaritan

woman, the people also experience

another type of thirst, so painful or

more than the physical lack of wa-

ter, thirst is sometimes what gives

meaning to life. Like the Israelites,

who walked through the desert com-

plaining because they were not sure

God was with them, so many people,

even those whose needs have been

met, are seeking something living to

satisfy them.

Only God can quench such a thirst. God’s love

pours into our hearts, as today’s second readings

say. And it is poured because the love of God is so

great that, even when we walk in our own darkness,

even when we don’t accept that we are the children

of God, even when we decide to talk down the paths

that take us away from God, Jesus is willing to give

life. The Israelites from the desert did not deserve to

receive water; but Moses strikes the rock and water

flows for them. Jesus gives his life for all.

But something truly beautiful in today’s gospel is

that God also has a thirst for us. Jesus says it twice

in the gospel: in the scene with the Samaritan woman

and then from the cross. What does Jesus have a

thirst for? The people who love cannot be far from

those whom they love. Even if people separate from

him, God wants so much to be with the people he

loves that he returns repeatedly to seek them. And

he seeks all: the water of life is for Jews and Samari-

tans. There is no nation or person that compares to

his water.

For Reflection

What do I thirst? What do I seek? If I spoke with

Jesus today, what would he know about me? What

would Jesus tell me about myself?

bre judío no debería conversar. Ni le importa que

sea samaritana.

Aunque

¿Qué me contaría
