WORSHIP

Francis E. Madojemu with notes from Rick Warren

Page 2: The word & worship

God is back• John 4:20-26 KJV

• (20) Our fathers worshipped in this

mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. (21) Jesus saithunto her, Woman,

believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall

neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. (22) Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we

worship: for salvation is of the

Jews.

Page 3: The word & worship

God is back• John 4:20-26 KJV

• (23) But the hour cometh, and now is,

when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the

Father seeketh such to worship him. (24) God is a Spirit: and they that worship

him must worship him in spirit and in

truth.

Page 4: The word & worship

But the hour cometh, and now is,

• We fail to see the impact of our faith in this land because of our understanding of worship being

limited to singing and church until this

paradigm shift we will not see changes

• Proverbs 9:10 KJV(10) The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the

knowledge of the holy is understanding.

Page 5: The word & worship

Missing Parts

The fear of the Lord is the integral part of wisdom & when we don't fear him we

are not wiseIsaiah until chapter 6 speaks woe until the revelation of true worship & in this context he

hears the God head say who will go for

us etc

Page 6: The word & worship

Isaiah 6:1-9 KJV(1) In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and

lifted up, and his train filled the

temple. (2) Above it stood the seraphims:

each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his

feet, and with twain he did fly. (3) And one cried unto another, and

said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.

Page 7: The word & worship

Isaiah 6:1-9 KJV5) Then said I, Woe

is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King,

the LORD of hosts. (6) Then flew one of the seraphims unto me,

having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:

Page 8: The word & worship

Isaiah 6:1-9 KJV

• (7) And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath

touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is

taken away, and thy sin purged. (8) Also I heard the voice of

the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.(9) And he said, Go, and tell

this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand

not; and see ye indeed, but perceive

not.

Page 9: The word & worship

Revival• This brings revival or

this is revival when each person experience a personal revelation

of God.The revival we are expecting is not coming in the old

format of crusades it starts internally

Romans 12 present your bodies a living

sacrifice holy and acceptable to God which is spiritual

worship.

Page 10: The word & worship

Body & Worship• Romans 12:1 KJV

• (1) I beseech you therefore, brethren, by

the mercies of God, that ye present your

bodies a living sacrifice, holy,

acceptable unto God, which is your

reasonable service.• Romans 12:1 (ESV)

• I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice,

holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

Page 11: The word & worship

LifeIf you think about it well worship

encompasses everything we do

• Look at fasting that is the fast God has chosen in

Isaiah its different from today's fast in

church Yet men like Ghandiused it as a weapon to fight & win for the people of India

Page 12: The word & worship

Isaiah 58:5-8 KJV• (5) Is it such a fast

that I have chosen? a day for a man to

afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day

to the LORD?• (6) Is not this the

fast that I have chosen? to loose the

bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens,

and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every

yoke?

Page 13: The word & worship

Isaiah 58:5-8 KJV• (7) Is it not to deal

thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy

house? when thou seestthe naked, that thou cover him; and that

thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

• (8) Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thinehealth shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness

shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward.

Page 14: The word & worship

What do we use ours for?

• Evangelism is a lifestyle of worship we are to be witnesses or evidence not TO witness this is separate from presenting the good news or the Gospel

• Acts 1:8 KJV• (8) But ye shall receive power, after

that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye

shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of

the earth.

Page 15: The word & worship

Evangelism• There are three

approaches to evangelism that C. Peter Wagner, of

Fuller Theological Seminary, has called

1. Presence Evangelism (I-P), 2.Proclamation

Evangelism (2-P), and 3. Persuasion

Evangelism (3-P).

• Presence Evangelism seems to stem from the biblical word

witness or testimony.

Page 16: The word & worship

Evangelism• The presence of the

Christian is an evangelizing factor,

much like the presence of salt is a preserving factor.

• The Christian does evangelism by living the gospel before the lost, which involves being a

positive testimony.• On the mission field, presence

evangelism may occur through medical or agricultural work.

Page 17: The word & worship

Evangelism• In some Muslim countries where

missionaries are not allowed to enter,

Christian businessmen in

secular employment become evangelists for Christ by their

presence. • When a person possesses the attitudes and

character of Jesus Christ, he or she can witness the

gospel by living an ideal life.

Page 18: The word & worship

EvangelismPresence evangelism is reflected in what is

usually called charity or social action. it is "giving a cup of cold water" in the name of Christ.

When the Christian is influencing others or standing for justice,

it is presence evangelism, whether or

not the unsaved realize the evangelist

is a Christian.

Page 19: The word & worship

Evangelism• Proclamation

Evangelism is making the good news of

Jesus Christ known so that the lost will hear it and understand it.

• Persuasion Evangelism is not

only proclaiming the gospel, but it also involves persuading or motivating the unsaved to respond.

Page 20: The word & worship

The Word &Worship• These two are

inseparable!• In life as we have all discovered from experience there are no rigid steps or formulas that one

can give for marriage,

relationships, business and

especially worship in a church setting as the key lies in the complexity of

the relationship and the hearts of those

involved.

Page 21: The word & worship

Definitions• In order to be on the same page we must first

define what the word WORSHIP means in this particular context.

Page 22: The word & worship

Terminology• For many of us, the

word ‘dough’ means cash. ‘I don’t have any dough’ means ‘I don’t have any cash’.

• But the true dictionary meaning of dough is actually

flour.

• And so many times we use terminologies that mean one thing in one context, and another thing in another context.

Page 23: The word & worship

Terminology• If you go to a bakery to say, ‘I don’t have any

dough’, they will think you don’t have any flour that has

been mixed.

• Is the word ‘dough’ wrong to be used for

money? No!

• Is it wrong to be used for flour? No!

• Both words are correct but their contexts differ.

Page 24: The word & worship

Common Definitions of Worship

• Many times when you and I begin to talk about praise and worship, our definition of

praise talks about the exuberant part of our music, and worship seems to talk about the

solemn part of our singing.

• This is what most of us are taught

to think.

Page 25: The word & worship

Common Definitions of Worship

For that particular context we can

define praise and worship, and its

okay. • In music

particularly in church services you will have praise and worship presented as

such. But we must remember that the Bible talks more about worship than we talk about.

Page 26: The word & worship

Common Definitions of Worship

• In the Bible, worship is more than singing slow songs. Even what we call “praise” is part of biblical

worship. • And we are going into

an exploration of what it means to praise and worship

the Lord. • And to start, I’ll define three things

very quickly –thanksgiving, praise,

and worship.

Page 27: The word & worship

Common Definitions of Worship

• Thanksgiving is giving thanks to God for what He has done. • Praise is praising God for who He is.

• But there is one aspect of relationship

with God that is strange, and that is

worship. • We all know how to praise men, because we have done it before.

• We know how to say thank you to men like

you and I.

Page 28: The word & worship

Common Definitions of Worship

• But worship is something that only God deserves because

He is Holy.

• Worship is something that is attributed

to God alone.

• We know good men, we know faithful men, and we know men that

care.

• But one thing we have never

discovered is a man that is holy,

Page 29: The word & worship

Common Definitions of Worship

• To relate with God on the area of worship is

difficult for us because we realize that this is one attribute of God that

we rarely find the equivalent in man.

• So we find out that worship has no human

equivalent because it is to God alone that worship

is due.

• Worship is a very strange and mysterious thing,

Page 30: The word & worship

Common Misconceptions• Depending on your religious background, you may need to expand your understanding of praying, and listening

to a sermon. • Or you may think of ceremonies, candles, and communion. Or you may think of healing, miracles, and ecstatic

experiences. • Worship can include these elements, but worship is far more

than these expressions.

Worship is a lifestyle.

Page 31: The word & worship

Worship is a Lifestyle.

• Worship is a lifestyle.

• Worship is far more than music.

• For many people, worship is just a synonym for music.

• They say, “At our church, we have

worship first, and then the teaching”

• This is a big misunderstanding.

Page 32: The word & worship

Common Misconceptions

• Every part of a church service is an act of worship: praying, scripture reading, singing,

confession, silence, being

still, listening to a sermon, taking notes,

giving an offering, baptism, communion, signing a commitment card, and even greeting other worshipers.

Page 33: The word & worship

Worship predates Music.

• Actually, worship predates music.

• Adam worshiped in the Garden of Eden, but music isn’t mentioned until Genesis 4:21 with

the birth of Jubal.

If worship were just music then all who are nonmusical could

never worship.

• Worship is far more than music

Page 34: The word & worship

Worship predates Music.

• Even worse, “worship” is often is often misused to refer to a

particular style of music:

• “First we sang hymn, then a

praise and worship song.” or, “I like the fast praise songs but enjoy the slow worship songs the most.”

Page 35: The word & worship

Worship Predates

Music.• In this usage, if a

song is fast or loud or uses brass instruments, it’s

considered ‘praise.’

• But if it is slow and quiet and

intimate, maybe accompanied by guitar, that’s

worship.• This is a common misuse of the term

“worship.”

Page 36: The word & worship

Worship predates Music.

Worship has nothing to do with the style or volume or speed

of a song. God loves all kinds of music because he invented it all –fast and slow, loud and soft, old and

new. • You probably don’t like it all, but God

does! If it is offered to God in

spirit and truth, it is an act of worship.

Page 37: The word & worship

Worship predates Music.

• Christians often disagree over style of music used in worship, passionately

defending their preferred.

• There are no musical notes in

the bible;

• we don’t even have the instrument they use in the bible times.

Page 38: The word & worship

Worship predates Music.

• Frankly, the music style you like best says more about you –your background and personality – than it does about God.

• One ethnic group’s music can sound like

noise to another. But God likes variety and enjoys it

all.

Page 39: The word & worship

No “Christian” music; only Christian lyrics

• There is no such thing as “Christian” music; there are only Christian lyrics.

It is the words that make a song sacred

not the tune.

• There are no spiritual tunes.

• If I played a song for you without the

words, you would have no way of knowing if it were a “Christian”

song.

Page 40: The word & worship

No “Christian” music; only Christian lyrics

• Worship is not for your benefit.

• As pastor I receive notes that say, “I loved the worship

today, I got a lot out of it.”

• This is another misconception about

worship. • It isn’t for our benefit! We worship for God’s benefit.

• When we worship, our goal is to bring

pleasure to God, not ourselves.

Page 41: The word & worship

No “Christian” music; only Christian lyrics.

• If you ever said, “I didn’t get anything out of worship today” you worshipped for the wrong reason.

• Worship isn’t for you, it’s for God. • Of course most

worship services also include elements of

fellowship, edification, and

evangelism, and there are benefits to

worship, but we don’t worship to please

ourselves.

Page 42: The word & worship

Biblical Concepts• He is worthy because

He is holy. • That is why worship

belongs to Him. • To worship God means

to submit to Him. • It means to bow down,

to stoop down, to reverence, to make one low, and exalt

the Saviour. • Worship is bigger than what we think it

is. • Worship is the reason

why we live. • Worship is our life.

Page 43: The word & worship

Biblical Concepts

• In Daniel 3:8-10, • The king of Babylon had this great stature that

he wanted everyone to before every time the trumpet is blown. He didn’t expect them to just

come and sing to the stature. He wanted that anytime the trumpet is blasted, that the

children of the nation will bow.

Page 44: The word & worship

• Three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego said, “Sorry, you may kill us. We will not serve your god, nor will we worship the golden image.”

Worship is an attitude. • It is a position. It is a lifestyle.

Page 45: The word & worship

Singing: Worship or Praise?

• Hebrews 13:15• By him therefore let us offer the

sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

• (YLT) through him, then, we may offer up a sacrifice of praise always to God, that is, the fruit of lips, giving thanks to

His name;

Page 46: The word & worship

God Feels too!We often forget that God has emotions too. He feels things very

deeply. The bible tells us that God grieves,

gets jealous and angry, and feels compassion, pity, sorrow, and

sympathy as well as happiness, gladness, and

satisfaction. God loves, delight, gets

pleasure, rejoices, enjoy and even laughs!

Bringing pleasure to God is called worship.• The bible says,

• “The LORD is pleased only with those who worship him and trust

His love.”

Page 47: The word & worship

God Feels too!• Psalm 147:11

• 11 The LORD takes pleasure in those who fear Him, In those who hope in His

mercy.• Anything that you do that brings pleasure to GOD is an act of

worship. Like a diamond, worship is

multifaceted. • It would take volumes to cover all there is about worship, but we

will look at the primary aspects of worship in this

section.

Page 48: The word & worship

God Feels too!• Anthropologists have noted that worship is a

universal urge, hard-wired by God into the very

fiber of our being – an inbuilt need to connect with

God. • Worship is as natural as eating

or breathing.

Page 49: The word & worship

God Feels too!• If we fail to

worship God,

• We always find a substitute, even if it ends up

being ourselves.

• The reason God made us with this desire is that he

desires worshipers!

• Jesus said, “The Father seeks worshipers!”

Page 50: The word & worship

Life Style• That is all we live for. Worship is our life – the way we dress, talk, act,

speak. • It has to do with the

way we relate to our loved ones, our families, our

enemies, our friends. • That is worship. It

is more than the songs we sing.

• My prayer today is that we will see that

worship is deeper than we ever thought

it is.

Page 51: The word & worship

That’s what we live for

• That is why I don’t have to tell somebody not to wear a skirt

that barely covers her. • It is who you worship that will tell you how

you should look. • Worship is your life.

• He made you for worship. Most of us

think that when we get to heaven we are going to be singing songs.

• I don’t believe that is all we will do in

heaven. I believe it is a life that is

submitted to Him.

Page 52: The word & worship

That’s what we live for

• Worship is inspired. Jesus said to the

woman at the well in John 4:24 “God is

Spirit, and those who worship Him must

worship in spirit and truth.”

• True worship is inspired by the

revelation of God to our spirit by His Spirit and by the truth of His Word.

Page 53: The word & worship

Because He is Worthy!

• In the book of Revelation the Bible says, “He is worthy to receive glory, honour, praise, and

blessing.” • He is worthy.

Do you know that The English word

“worship” comes from the Old English word “worthship,” a word that denotes the worthiness of the one receiving the special honor or

devotion.

Page 54: The word & worship

Because He is Worthy!

• Worship means He is worthy.

• In other words He deserves it. • It is His entitlement.

• It belongs to Him because He alone is worthy, and we are to worship

Him. • Giving worth to Him is what we do when we worship

Him.

Page 55: The word & worship

Because He is Worthy!

• Hallelujah! I bow down and worship You. In other

words I submit to You. I give You

everything I have.

• I don’t know about You but one thing

that is most exciting is that He is the Lamb of God that takethaway the sins of

the world.

Page 56: The word & worship

Because He is Worthy!

Without that, none of us would be sitting

here today. • He is the Lamb of

God. • Worthy of our

worship. • He is the reason we

have been saved. • He is the One that saved us. He gave His life for us. Is it too much for Him to ask us to give our

lives to Him? • He is the Lamb of

God.

Page 57: The word & worship

Service is the consequence of

Worship• The logical consequence of

worship is service,

• Isaiah in his experience of God in the temple, could only responds by saying “Here am I

send me.”

• In the temptation of our Lord Jesus in the wilderness,

Jesus links worship to service.

Page 58: The word & worship

Service is the consequence of Worship

• Matthew 4:7-11

”8 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly

high mountain, and showed Him all the

kingdoms of the world and their glory.9 And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you

shall serve.

Page 59: The word & worship

Temptation of Christ Jesus’ first temptation

(to turn stones to bread) was to use His

divine power to satisfy His own physical needs.

• The second (to jump off the Temple) was to perform a spectacular feat so the people would follow Him.

• The third was to gain possession of the

world by worshiping Satan.

Page 60: The word & worship

One motive lay behind all these

temptations: Satan wanted to destroy Jesus’ mission.

• Because Jesus’ death would destroy Satan’s power, Satan wanted Jesus to pollute His life and ministry.

• The ultimate issue behind these

temptations was idolatry.

• The real purpose of Satan’s temptation

was that he might be worshiped instead of

God

Page 61: The word & worship

Our motive is to bring glory and pleasure to

our creator.

• In Isaiah 29:13• God complains about worship that is half-

hearted and hypocritical.

• The people were offering God stale prayers, insincere

praise, empty words, and man-made rituals without even thinking about the meaning.

• God’s heart is not touched by tradition in worship, but by

passion and commitment.

Page 62: The word & worship

Our motive is to bring glory and pleasure to

our creator.• The bible says,

• “These people come near to me with their mouth and

honor me with their lips, but their

hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made of rules taught by men.”

• Worship is not a part of your life;

• it is your life. • Worship is not just for Sunday services.

Page 63: The word & worship

Our motive is to bring glory and pleasure to

our creator.• We are told to worship Him continually’ and to

“praise Him, from sunrise to sunset.’

• In the bible, people praised God at work, at home, in battle, in

jail, and even in bed! • Praise should be the first activity when you open your eyes in the morning and the last

activity when you close them at night.

• David said, “I will thank the Lord at all times. My mouth will

always praise Him. Psalm 34:1

Page 64: The word & worship

Naturally Supernaturally• Did you wake up as an

unbeliever to ask the devil what you should do to glorify and worship

him?• You just did it naturally and its supposed to be the same with God and worship.• Every activity can be transformed into an act of worship when you do it for the praise, glory, and

pleasure of God. The bible says, “so whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the

glory of God.”• 1 Corinthians 10:31

• 31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the

glory of God.

Page 65: The word & worship

Naturally Supernaturally• Martin Luther said,

• “A dairymaid can milk cow to the glory of

God.”• How is it possible to

do everything to the Glory of God? By doing everything as if you were doing it for

Jesus, and by carrying on a continual

conversation with Him while you do it.

• The bible says, whatever you do, work at it with all your

hearts, as working for the Lord, not for

men,’

Page 66: The word & worship

Naturally Supernaturally

• Colossians 3:2323 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men,

This is the secret to a lifestyle of worship-

doing everything as if you were doing it for Jesus. The message paraphrase

says, ‘Take your everyday, ordinary life-your sleeping, eating,

going to work, and walking, around life- and place it before God as an

offering.” Work becomes worship when you dedicate it to God and

perform it with an awareness of His presence.

Page 67: The word & worship

Naturally Supernaturally

• When I first fell in love with my wife, I

thought of her constantly; while eating breakfast, driving to school, attending class,

waiting in line at the market, pumping gas- I could not

stop thinking about this woman! I often talk to myself about

her.

Page 68: The word & worship

Naturally Supernaturally

• This helped me feel close to Kay even though we lived several hundred miles apart and

attended different colleges.

• By constantly thinking of her, I was abiding in her

love. • This is what real

worship is all about – falling in love with Jesus

Page 69: The word & worship

Don’t Lead Worship, Simply Worship

• We need to stop being the Gods director, the Congregation follows you as you worship.

• We need to let the motive for the songs we sing be God-ward not an attempt to get the

Congregation excited but if our assignment is to excite a dull congregational atmosphere, then go ahead but it cannot be defined as

worship.• The Key is focus

Page 70: The word & worship

Don’t Lead Worship, Simply Worship• Worship is

submitting to Gods will now and for eternity it is the key to knowing and experiencing God. • It becomes our driving force for

Life• Worship Him, because

in worshipping Him you enter into the life that He has

originally purposed for you.

• Worship Him and you shall never lack.

Page 71: The word & worship

Don’t Lead Worship,

Simply Worship

• Worship Him and you shall never

doubt.

• Worship Him and you shall receive

strength from above.

• Worship Him, and you will never have to look to man for help.

• Worship Him for He alone is worthy

Page 72: The word & worship

Application• With our

understanding of Worship we need to realize that to

raise our congregational worship would

require a combination of

things which when implemented would reflect in the

praise of God and the lives and service of our congregation.

Page 73: The word & worship

Application• Definitions

• God is the focus of worship.

• Worship is as a lifestyle; Songs and

singing are an expression of worship not all of worship.

• Atmosphere for worship is crucial and it begins

in us • It influences all aspects of our lives

• Worship is inspired by the Spirit and by truth.

• Service is a product of worship not vice versa

• Don’t lead worship just worship

Page 74: The word & worship
