The solution supplied by AJ Power is an AJ1430 powered by an MTU 18V2000 with a drop over enclosure designed to tie in with the existing colours of the facility. The drop over enclosure also included acoustic louvres, e-stops and roof mounted silencers.

Due to the proximity with a major waterway, the enclosure is designed to be located on a purpose built bund that surrounds the generating set in order to ensure that any leak would be contained.

Towards the end of 2016, AJ Power has supplied a Northern Irish animal feed

and fuel supplier with a 1430kVA MTU powered generating set and a bespoke drop over enclosure.

The primary role of the generating set is to facilitate the customers requirement for peak lopping.

This means using a synchronised generator in line with the main utility power supply to aid the peak demand on the utility at certain times of the day or the year, especially during winter months.

→MULTI-STOREY BUILDING PROJECT

AJ POWER SUPPLIES 16 MVA OF POWERFOR MULTI-STOREY BUILDING IN MYANMAR

In 2016, AJ Power was approched to supply a variety of generating sets for a project in Yangon, Myanmar, which was supplied by its distribution partner Octagon International Services Co. Ltd.

The major multi-storey building (called Junction City) is in the final stage

of construction and comprises a shopping mall, an office complex and a hotel.

The 15 synchronized generating sets requested are to supply each part of the building separately.

The sets were delivered to site in late 2016 and have been fully mechanically installed.

The final electrical commissioning is scheduled to take place in June.

Further details on the achievement of this project will be supplied in the next issue of the InSight Magazine.

This project is special in nature due to the method of starting the generating sets.

The size of the building and the machines being situated on different floors would not permit all the generating sets to start at once, as this would result in a lot of unwelcome vibration throughout the building, despite the use of a special seismic anti-vibration mounts.

The solution provided by AJ Power was to fit each ATS panel with a Woodward DTSC200 controller which is

connected to the generating set via CAN bus.

The controllers are constantly monitoring the load on the mains and are sharing the values out with the generating set controllers.

The controllers log the values and create a 5 minute average load value.

In the event of a failure, only the generating sets required to supply this average load will be started, instead of all machines starting every time.

The 15 generating sets provided were 4 different sizes: 2 x AJ550 Scania, 3 x AJ825 Mitsubishi, 6 x AJ1100 Mitsubishi and 4 x AJ1650 Mitsubishi, so a generator power level close to the load on the system can always be provided.

SPOTLIGHT ON...PAT SAUNDERS FROM FGW GENERATORS

Pat Saunders, Managing Director of FGW Generators, has kindly accepted to be put under the

spotlight for the Autumn Edition of the InSight Magazine.

Headquartered at a modern facility in Cape Town with a second facility in Johannesburg, FGW Generators has been AJ Power exclusive distributor in South Africa since 2007.

How did you start in the Power generation business?

I started out in 1967 as an apprentice Diesel Fitter with the South African Detroit Diesel Distributor in Cape Town. The dealership covered a very wide range of product applications such as marine propulsion, on board auxiliary generators, compressors, mobile cranes... and also stationary generating sets.

After 7 years I progressed to works foreman and then started marketing Allison Automatic Transmissions, including the required engineering of these units into new (Leyland, Mercedes Benz, Isuzu, Nissan & Oshkosh) trucks for on-highway applications.

Between 1976 and 1980, General Motors USA (The former owners of Detroit Diesel & Allison products) withdrew from the South African market due to worldwide sanctions against South Africa. The South African Detroit Diesel distributorship was taken over by the BTR group of companies from the UK and changed its name to BTR Power Products.

Under BTR, the direction of the company changed and my “love” affair with diesel generating sets started.The new generator division grew fast and BTR soon became the desired brand in the market due to the exceptional load acceptance capabilities of the Detroit Diesel two stroke engines.

In 1982 I was approached by the IMS Group in Cape Town with intention of starting a new generator sales and manufacturing division.At the time IMS holdings was a joint owner of CIRCON (Also a Generator set OEM) and they were unable to service the demand in Cape Province. This was the start of IMS Engineering Cape where it would be my responsibility to start and run the generating sets and marine engines sales division from scratch. IMS Engineering was the official agent for a large number of engine supplier’s namely MTU, Alpha Diesel, Komatsu ,YANMAR...

From the start, the biggest challenge was to overcome the poor name that IMS had made for themselves in the market place. Previous generating sets that were supplied to clients from the Johannesburg branch were poorly installed and not being properly maintained.Consultants were reluctant to invite IMS to tender as they feared that they would be left with incomplete contracts.

The first three years were hard but after that, IMS Engineering had grown to be the market leader in the Cape. Our staff headcount grew from one person to forty as we expanded our manufacturing facility and engine sales division. The marine engine trade was also very active.

Towards the middle of 2007 IMS Engineering Cape was sold to a brazilian corporation. The change in ownership and direction forced me to too re-evaluate my position.

Towards the middle of 2007, I was approached by the local regional area manager for FG Wilson Engineering South Africa which at the time was the subsidiary office to the FG Wilson UK office. This led to the start of FGW Generators Pty Ltd which we had to begin from scratch under new independent ownership.

The new Head Office was opened in Cape Town and we retained the existing Johannesburg facilities.

In January 2015, AJ Power acquired the company and we are now part of the AJ Power group of companies.

What have been your biggest challenges in starting up a new company ?

The word company refers to a team of people. Finding dedicated people to fill positions at the various offices and workshop’s is always the greatest challenge. The people appointed to these positions form the back bone of the company.

What is your typical working week like ?

My day starts at 6am and I try to be in the office before 8am. I generally leave the office at 4.30 – 5pm but I’m always available 24hrs day.

What is the future FGW Generators likely to look like?

I believe that with the support of our parent company AJ Power, FGW Generators will grow and will have a positive future.

What is your “guilty” pleasure?

I enjoy driving nice cars, motor cycling and sailing.

What is on your wish list for the next five years?

I would like to ensure that FGW Generators maintains steady growth and expands its field of operation into the broader African region.To achieve this we will need to bring on-board a number of key sales and technical staff to support the required expansion.

The previous FG Wilson RSA company’s core business was the supply of CKD engine and alternator kits to the South African generating set OEM’s and also the sale of spare parts. The first task was to change the business model as the old company did not tender on a full scope basis (delivery – install – commission – maintain). The second was to repair the reputational damage caused by the poor performance of F.G. Wilson UK which soured many client relationships.

The power shortage and load shedding during 2008/9 was a particularly busy period and greatly helped to establish the FGW Generator PTY presence and brand in the market.

CONOR’S VISIT TO THE CARIBBEANBARBADOS

After arriving on a Saturday evening, Conor was able to make the most of a free Sunday, where he was given a tour

of the 21 mile length island nation by his very hospitable hosts Bruce Massiah, managing director (left on the picture) and Kevin Whitehead who is a mechanical engineer (on the right).

In January, AJ Power sales executive Conor Gray paid a visit to Barbados to visit long-time customer D.M Simpson & Co.

The tour included a quick stop at a local chicken farm, with backup power supplied by an AJ Power generating set.

On Monday it was back to business. After discussing the local energy requirements and making sure everyone was up to date on all recent developments, both in Barbados and back in the UK, Bruce and Kevin took Conor to visit some AJ Power customers, one of whom was having a slight issue with flickering lights at their hatchery. After communicating with AJ Power electrical engineer Eugene Devlin, this was quickly established to be a simple fault requiring a slight adjustement of the AVR.

After a productive few days in Barbados, Conor was very sad to have to say goodbye to the tropical island paradise!

We look forward to continuing our long term relationship with D.M Simpson & Co and expanding our presence in Barbados in 2017.

The generator was installed complete with a load bank and special logic programming on the InSight 4000 control panel to control

the load command.

As per customer requirements the generator would not run below 70% load which could cause light loading issues with the engine .

As the site load could be low for a long time depending on which equipment comes on line, the generator control panel monitors site load and adds or reduces kW on the load bank to ensure a healthy load on the generator at all times.

This can also be done manually by the customer on weekly tests or in the rare event of a total mains failure.

AJ Power has recently supplied, installed and commissioned an AJ66 at an electricity supplier’s main 110,000 volt substation to back up essential services .

During the summer of 2016, AJ Power had the opportunity to work alongside one of its very successful neighbours in

Northern Ireland who, like AJ Power, have experienced exceptional growth in the last few years.

The project involved the supply and installation of a Scania DC13 powered AJ460 canopied generating set. The machine is to be used as a Standby generating set to back up the power supply of 11 refrigerated 40ft containers.

The Standby generating set was supplied to start up automatically from an existing site changeover panel when required. Fuel is supplied directly to the genset base tank via a gravity fed system from a large on site fuel facility.

The AJ275 generating set powered by and AGCO engine was supplied along

with a 5000litre double skinned bulk fuel tank.

The set includes a fuel level gauge and high/low level alarms and bund leakage warning alarms. Fuel lines were installed to supply directly from the bulk tank bypassing, the 400litre generating set day tank.

AJ Power provided a bespoke control solution following specific customer requirements:The customer required that one of its factories, when in use, was always to be supplied by the generating set but also

have mains failure backup. The offices on site also required mains failure backup.

The solution supplied by AJ Power was to provide two ATS panels: an ATS2-400 to be used in the factory and an ATS2-160 to be used for the offices.

The ATS2-400 will be manually switched on a daily basis with both automatically switching in the event of a power failure.

The Yellow Door is a local, Craigavon based, family run, artisan bakery, deli and restaurant that has been creating high quality produce

for the last 25 years.

The newly CE certified AJ275 generating set powered by an AGCO Sisu engine was supplied to be directly fed with fuel from an existing fuel tank.

It would be required to run 8 hours every night, 7 days a week in order to provide stable power for the 5 large ovens on the premises as the local utility transformer is not of sufficient capacity.

In early 2017 AJ Power supplied, installed and commissioned a new generating set for a local company: ‘The Yellow Door’.
