The end can only comeafter the extremity of Kaliyugapasses through its final phaseof the darkest night ofirreligiousness… The exampleof ‘Nirbhaya’ has beenhighlighted extensively in theprint and electronic media, andso has triggered off theuncovering of the plight ofhundreds and thousands ofother ‘Daughters of India’, andthose in various parts of theworld.

Many, many young, matureand old citizens have expressedtheir concern and wrath aboutthe pathetic conditions of thepresent day systems, laws andaction taken by theGovernments, Police and LegalDepartments, Hospitals andgeneral public. The SupremeCourt Chief Justice, thePresident and Prime Ministerof India, and other politicianshave shown their concern andare doing their best to reformthe system to the best of theirability. However, the problemhas festered for long; it relatesto the vicious and violentmindsets, thoughts and actionsof perpetrators who areblinded by their demonicbehaviour. Harsh and suitablepunishment to the culprits willdefinitely help in weakening thismenace of violence againstwomen and children but, aftera while the bestial nature andbehaviour tend to re-emergeagain… Along with punitiveaction against the offenders,there is an urgent need forpublic awareness throughthe Media to keep thecollective conscienceawakened and alert.

A thought-provoking articleby Prof Naghma Siddiqui, a

writer and member of theCentre of Peace andSpirituality International, andresearch scholar at JamiaHamdard, New Delhi, thatappeared on 3 January 2013in the Speaking Tree section,Times of India, provides verypractical and genuine ways torehabilitate society (as thisfollowing excerpt illustrates):

“While demanding solutionsof the government may lead tocreating a legal infrastructurethat is more severe andstringent, what is the aamadmi’s role in all of this? Can’twe start the reparation processtoday, in our own little ways?It is instructive to recollect MK Gandhi’s favourite quote:“Be the change you wish to seein the world”.

“We have waited too long forothers to change society, whenthe truth is: If we want totransform society we have tobegin with ourselves…

“At the social level, we needto know our limits, if we wantto remain in the peacefulsphere. The way to go, is witha peaceful approach, byabjuring violence in any formand by avoiding any kind orcoercion… One practical wayto begin the process of

humanizing society is to makemotivational educationaccessible to all. As a long-termplan we need to make effortsto teach value and peaceeducation both at a formal levelin schools and colleges and atan informal level throughpositive personalitydevelopment programmes tofoster responsible citizenship…The emphasis here is oninculcating ethics to create aduty-conscious society, insteadof only a rights-conscious one.

“A rights-based societyleads to social anarchy,whereas a duty-based societywill lead to harmony, solidarity,peace and compassion. Arights-based society is basedon the ‘we-they’ concept, inwhich we look at othermembers of society as ‘they’,not part of us. A duty-conscious society, on the otherhand, is based on the ‘we-we’concept in which all member ofsociety are an extension ofus…”

For a long-term, permanentsolution, infusion of moral,ethical and value educationfrom KG up to Universitylevels can help mould andelevate the outlook andbehaviour of the younger


generations. When divinesanskars are inculcated, theyouth will be motivated to leadmeaningful and viceless livesthereby bringing happiness toevery household.

From what we see in mostcrimes, liquor consumption bythe perpetrators blinds themcompletely and compels themto behave insanely andviolently. Let the Central andState Governments amend therules so that, like Gujarat,other states start to observeprohibition. The clean andrighteous character of ourcitizens should be preferredabove earning of excise

God is seeing His jewelsof contentment every-where.The light of each one issparkling very well becausethe power of contentment ismost elevated. Other powersalso come to where there iscontentment. The power ofcontentment easily ends anytype of problem. Where thereis contentment, no otherpower is lacking. The powerof contentment easilytransforms any type ofatmosphere or circumstance.Contentment transforms the

duty and other taxes fromliquor. Consumption of liquordestroys the character of ouryouth and hampers peace athome. It also affects theeducation and grooming ofyoung children and youth bycreating so much chaos athome and within society, whilemultiplying the violent,senseless acts against innocentwomen and girl-children.

Let us realize again andagain that the future of Bharatdepends on ‘Vivekananda-like’ youth of today andtomorrow. Let us glorifyBharat through our personalexamples of noble and pure

lives as spiritual children ofOne God, and create OneWorld Divine Family ofSatyuga through our thoughtsand actions. Then only will itbecome ‘Mera BharatMahan’ and ‘Kohinoor-e-Jahan’.

The Supreme Being isguiding us directly inimproving ourdetermination to live up tothe need of the hour. Thespecial message of NewYear Blessings (ElevatedVersions) is sharedherewith to help ourreaders rise to theoccasion:

ESSENCE OF ELEVATED VERSIONS OF 31 DECEMBER 2012


This was the time when thepeople of India were carryingon a vigorous struggle forpolitical independence but therewas absolutely no programmefor liberating people from themoral evils which had takenthem in their stranglehold. Thepeople were fighting theirpolitical foes but everyoneseemed to have compromisedwith or surrendered to the evils,called Sex-Lust, Anger, Greed,Attachment, Pride etc. Thenvulgar customs andsuperstitions reigned supreme inthe name of religion. Anunprecedented wave ofdisregard for the ethicalstandards had set in all over theglobe. Hatred and violencewere finding expressions in theform of more powerfulweapons and there wereunder-currents of preparationfor a World War. The erosionof spiritual beliefs had startedowing to the views of KarlMarx and Sigmund Freud. Theprevalent tragedy of the crisisof character was compoundedby the plethora of irrational andconfusing concepts.

To get the world out of thisgrave crisis, a change in man’soutlook was urgently called for.Someone was required to

awaken the heirs of the deitiesand the sages of the old torealize the significance of theirGodly patrimony. Disregard forspiritual truths could be checkedonly by giving to the world new,powerful, inspiring and rationalspiritual concepts which had thepotentiality of solving theproblems of man and societyand which required man to workboth for individual and socialgood rather than to sit idly,depending upon fate or to runaway into forests in pursuit ofGod. Someone was required tooffer fresh and appealingconcepts for a new WorldOrder of moral purity, spiritualand political peace andeconomic prosperity whereevery individual had a place ofhonour and happiness withoutbeing disturbed by anyone.What was required to beestablished was a world whichwas not ruled by the doctrineof “Survival of the fittest” butwhere everyone was fit andwas given love.

Who could do this?Will Durant has said that the

human mind aches at a littlecalculus; how shall then it beable to comprehend themysteries of creation? So, theworld needed the Creator

“MEN” someone has said,“are chiselled by the masterhand of social values,commanding the times.” But onthe occasion of ascension dayof Prajapita Brahma (Jan.18),in whose life a metamorphosiswas brought about not by anysocial, physical or economicsituation as in the case ofBuddha nor by any saint as inthe case of Vivekananda but bycertain strange, subtle anddivine events that took place inhis personal life when he wasabout 60 and was known to thebusiness community and to royalfamilies of Nepal and the Statesof Udaipur, Bikaner etc. asDada Lekhraj – a wealthy jewelmerchant. These events werenot the creation of a man or thesociety but were a work of God,who willed to mould Brahma inHis own image so as to liberatethe aspiring souls from thecorruptive influences of thetimes and wanted to giveworld’s stream of thoughts adifferent direction. Himself to expound them and itneeded a practical sage, likeBrahma Baba, to demonstrateit and to be a living repre-sentative of the new ethos andthe new culture.

So, in order to reveal newknowledge of the Creator andHis Creation, and to start theprocess of establishing theGolden Age in place of thepresent Iron Age, God, theWorld’s Mother, Father,Philosopher, Friend and Guide,gave to Dada Lekhraj, somesuper-physical perceptions andvisions. He gave him a trans-vision of His own Self-luminousOrb-like form and of the formof Vishnu, the four-armed, thusenabling him to have a clearconcept and knowledge of theSupreme God and of the goalof human life. He also showedhim visions of a coming worldcatastrophe as a result of man’sutter moral and spiritualdegeneration and of thefollowing Golden Age whereman will be a veritable deity andwhere women will have equalrights with men and wherethere will be no crime and nosin. He then made DadaLekhraj His human mediumand began to reveal, in detail,the mysteries of the self and ofthe World Order in greaterdepth. These happeningsbrought about a tremendouschange in the life of DadaLekhraj whom the Incorporeal

God now gave the name‘Prajapita Brahma’. Therevelations that God madeopened new vistas untoBrahma Baba and unto othersthrough him.

A man of high qualitiesShiv Baba had selected

Dada to be His medium asDada was a man of many parts.He had not only the businessacumen but was a man whocould offer constant love inample measure to the newspiritual family he would beinstrumental to create. He hadan exemplary learning capacity,sense of discipline and a strongwill to do a job in the face ofmany odds. He was not adreamer but a sculptor. In hisyester years, as businessman,he had been inventor andinnovator of new designs intowhich diamond would beembellished, and now he couldtransfer his ability to the taskof moulding the character of thehuman material, entrusted tohim. Even at this advanced age,he had a youthful radiance thatillumined his features. But whatwas notable was his youthfulethos. He had an untiring bodyand an indefatigable spirit andhad a blend of the eastern andwestern tradition. In him,orthodox and modernity madea happy combination. He couldspend as well as economize andgive simplicity a touch of uniquebeauty. Now his many talents

found their use in the divineservice of men and women. Henow called human beings as‘gems’ and ‘diamonds’ andvalued them properly as he hadearlier been giving value to hisgems and had been placingthem in excellent jewel boxesafter these were chiseled tohave a fine sparkle.

He had the potentiality ofbecoming a spiritual edition ofIsaac Newton and AlbertEinstein. In the spiritual realm,the cosmological concepts thathave come through him are farmore revolutionary than or atleast as high as Einstein’s arein the realm of physics. Theseconcepts influence all branchesof knowledge, withoutexception, and are, in impactand in ultimate effect, far morepowerful than those of Einstein.If Einstein’s theories had led tonew understanding of Time andSpace, the revelations madethrough Dada take one evenbeyond that and they add a newdimension to the view of thecosmos. If the theories ofthe former led to theinvention of atom bomb, thetheories and practiceenunciated through BrahmaBaba led to the perfection ofa new type of Atom Bomb.But this bomb is forreconstruction rather thanfor devastation anddestruction. The spiritualweapon he has placed at the


disposal of man is the realBrahmastra – the ultimate inspiritual armory.

for practical idealism and divinemorality. He announced thatwhatever was believed by thosewho were body-conscious andwere steeped in vices, were notworthy of being accepted forspiritual excellence. Heexplained in unequivocal termsand in a forceful style that body-consciousness and neglect arethe root causes of all sufferingsand he emphasized thenecessity of Purity. He declaredthat body-consciousness wasphilosophically unjustifiable,morally indefensible, sociallydangerous, economicallyexploitative, politically divisive,and, in every way, harmful, forit gave rise to casteism, racialdiscrimination, over-population,violent form of nationalism,licentious tendencies, crime andall its off-shoots.

He categorically condemnedthe caste system based on birthand exhorted people to uprootit as, in its present form, it hadno spiritual or moral sanction.He championed the cause ofwomen – their spirituallyoriented education, and, aboveall, their right to Purity. Hebrought them out ofconfinement of the house and

inspired them to accept theresponsibility of bringing aboutnew awakening and the moralchange in the society.

He called upon the priestsand worshippers, who hadcontinued to beat the drums ofold rituals and of idol worship,to break their age-old shacklesof blind faith and superstitionand to take to life of Celibacy,Purity and Meditation on oneIncorporeal God. He explainedto them that there was only oneIncorporeal God and that nohuman being (including Dadahimself) could claim to be Godor His incarnation nor could anyman claim the title of ‘JagatGuru’, for God alone was theGuru or the Liberator of thewhole world. He furtherexplained that there were twokinds of religion – one was ‘thesleeping pill religion’ and theother ‘the awakening religion’.It was the former type ofreligion that was called the‘opiate of the people’. He hadnow pledged to become aninstrument for the re-establishment of awakeningreligion.

He also gave a call to thepolitical leaders to work fortheir emancipation from hatred,anger, sex-lust and such otherevils; for, a person who had eviltendencies, could not succeedin bringing lasting happiness toothers.

In doing this, his object was

not to hurt anyone’ssusceptibilities or to injureanyone’s feelings. On the otherhand, his object was to awakenthem and his aim was the well-being of mankind. His intentionwas to help them in theascertainment of what is rightand what is wrong and to enablethem to accept the truth and toreject falsehood.

Fierce OppositionDespite fierce opposition, he

shared this spiritual wealth withothers as he had practisedphilanthropy earlier when hewas a businessman. He couldhave played platitudes toscholars and religious heads andthere would have been noproblem but he could notstrangle his conscience and hidethe Truth as he had understoodit. Moreover, he could notescape this sacred duty evenotherwise as it was God Shivawho, lording over his intellect,made all these pronouncementsand commandments, using hisorgan of speech. But, themasses did not know God andHis incognito descent on Babaas the Gita says that body-conscious people do not andcannot recognize God and Hiswondrous ways when Hedescends on a human form. So,the inevitable happened. A greatstorm was raised againstBaba’s teachings.

No great man has everescaped censure by people of


his land because, in all landsthere are some short-temperedfanatics who jump to their feetand commit violence or startagitations, feeling brave andrighteous. There are also thosewho feel afraid of losingpecuniary benefits, prestige orpower because of a change inthe present belief and customset-up. They always grouptogether to offer resistance andto enact reprisals. Any numberof instances can be summonedin support of this. Even so, Babahad to face trenchant criticism,blasphemy and gravepersecution, for the vestedinterests formed into pickets ofopposition and oppression. ButBaba had magnificent toleranceand he exhorted all those whohad rallied round him to keeptheir cool, for the Truthultimately prevails. His mentalcalm finally set all the stormsat rest.

Undisturbed andUndeterred

Undisturbed by allprovocations and predicaments,Brahma Baba went on to do thedivine task assigned to him byShiv Baba whose vehicle andinstrument he was. Shiv Babathrough Brahma Baba not onlyexplained the precepts to thefaithful but they, as Bap-Dada,set to the task of perfecting anumber of dedicated andsacrificing souls who would doreal service to the world at large

as apostles of this renaissanceand would be living examplesunto others of the life of yoga,purity, simplicity, abnegation andself-control. This they ultimatelyachieved.

which Bap-Dada gave was thatDharma meant Dharna, i.e.,inculcation of sublime values.To him, the real religion was thereligion of the soul, namelyPurity and Peace, and not thereligion based on one’s birth toparents of a particulardenomination.

One of Baba’s guidingprinciples was the categoricalemphasis on the betterment ofthe entire humanity without anylimiting consideration. He wasVishwa-Kalyankari-Atma–World Benefactor – in the realmeaning of the term. Not onlythose who were on the rolls ofthe Brahma Kumaris’ institutioncould claim his love, care andguidance, but everyone,wherever he/she was living orto whichever colour or countrythey belonged, could have hisservices. It was a tremendoustask he performed in makingthis self-generating and self-sustaining institution, and,obviously, small and closedminds could not undertake thecorrect implementation of ShivBaba’s universal programme.Those engaged in the task ofworld welfare of the creation

of a world order have tooutgrow dwarfing influences.And this no one failed to find inBrahma Baba’s corporeal life.

By virtue of his in-depthstudy of the knowledgeimparted by Shiv Baba, bypractising faithfully andardently the Rajyoga taught byHim, by his scrupulous effortfor inculcation of divinequalities in the self and byexemplary and unequalledservice of mankind, BrahmaBaba attained the highestspiritual excellence that ahuman soul can achieve.

Anyone who had earlier,thought that ‘Love is God’,‘Work is Worship’ or ‘God isPeaceful’ were catchy phrasesor were mere pandering to themodern fetish of religiousgroups, but now these wererealized in daily life and bycoming into contact with ShivaBaba, through Brahma Baba,that these are vital and vibranttruths. The way Brahma Babalived and spoke was such thatit was evident that only aperson who felt the truths,enshrined in these words, coulduse them with such facility andso naturally.

Often, before an interviewwith him, one would baulk atthe idea of speaking with sucha personage as it might becalled, on equal terms, and to


put questions to him but suchwas his spiritual influence thatone felt that he had obtainedanswer to his questions andsuch was his affability that noone felt awed or overawed inhis company.

On 18th January, 1969, heattained his highest stage and,giving up his mortal coil,ascended to his angelic stage.And, in that form of existence,he has, in union with ShivBaba, been giving spiritualguidance for carrying on thedivine work of self-transformation and world-transformation.

The last discourse of ShivBaba and Brahma Baba, whenthe latter was in corporealform, has the echoes of manyhighest and noblest principlesof all religions. His lasttestament recalls Buddha’sparting words to Ananda, hisclosest disciple: “Be a lampunto yourself ’, and alsoChrist’s sermon to his disciples(in Luke 6:22) ‘Blessed are ye,when men shall hate you andshall reproach you, and cast outyour name as evil. Bap-Dadasaid, in their typical style: ‘Bea lamp unto yourself and alsounto others’ and ‘take those asfriends who talk ill of you.’

For about 76 years now, theBrahma Kumaris institution,which they founded, has beenthe vanguard of the movementof spiritual liberation of

mankind and re-establishmentof the Golden-Aged worldorder. Its emphasis is quiterightly on the concept ofbrotherhood of man and itswork is based on the beliefthat, in the good of theindividual lies the good of thecommunity and in the welfareof the community lays thebetterment of the individual. Itis sincerely dedicated to bringabout a world of completePurity. This institution is their

living legend and livingmonument and their presentrole in subtle, angelic form orthrough the corporeal mediumof Brahma Kumari HridayaMohini is an unbroken andcontinuing experience thatreally enlivens, enlightens andelevates.

The knowledge that Shiv

Baba gave through the oralorgan of Prajapita Brahma wasnot known to him earlier. Infact, some of the concepts andprecepts in which he believedearlier were diametricallyopposed to those now revealedby Shiv Baba. Brahma Babahimself also heard them for thefirst time when these were firstrevealed. And, he appreciatedthem as others did. Nay, hewas the happiest one to hearthese, and the manner heappreciated showed clearlythat these have beendiscoursed by a differentAuthority. However, he putthese in practice and set apractical example unto themand explained these by hisexperience and filled in thegaps.

In fact, concepts revealedthrough Baba are not a merepermutation and combinationof the system in vogue nor arethese in the nature of mereamendments to the prevalentthought but, rather, thesemake, at many points, completeand bold departure from thoseso far known and yet form intoa complete system withcogency and withoutinconsistency and, arequintessence of all branches ofknowledge and, in their moralnature, these are far higherthan the highest. So, thesecannot have been given but byGod.

He explained in unequivocalterms and in a forceful stylethat body-consciousness andneglect are the root-causes ofall sufferings and heunderscored the necessity ofPurity. He declared that body-consciousness wasphilosophically unjustifiable,morally indefensible, sociallydangerous, economicallyexploitative, politically divisive,and, in every way, harmful, forit gave rise to casteism, racialdiscrimination, over-population, violent form ofnationalism, licentioustendencies, crime and all itsoff-shoots.

Many people lamentover the absence ofany leader worth the

name to create an impact on thepeople in general and the youthin particular. A MahatmaGandhi could not produceanother Mahatma Gandhi, aVivekananda could not produceanother Vivekananda, and aShankaracharaya could notproduce anotherShankaracharya. At present,there are no leaders who areendowed with the qualities andabilities, which are required toemulate and inspire the youthsand others in the world. Someyouths are complaining thatwhen they look around, they donot find a single individual whohas the qualifications to inspireand motivate them or whomthey can follow. It is a fact thatup to the half of the last centurywe had some great personalitieswhom we used to refer towhenever we speak ofgreatness and goodness. Now,many people say that there areonly ordinary people in the world.

Hence, such people are notbothered to care about others,nor inclined to treat others withrespect and regard. We allknow that elders, seniors andthose who adorn high positionsof authority and possessingknowledge were treated withrespect and regard in oldendays. The situation has changeda lot now. In these days,children do not respect evenparents, not to speak of elders,students do not respect theirteachers; howsoever they arescholarly and learned.

We all know that science andtechnology has provided us witha lot of physical comforts andconveniences. It is necessary,but, when we speak ofleadership, science cannotcreate leaders. Science cannotcreate goodness. As Einstensaid ‘Science can denatureplutonium, but science cannotremove the evils in the heart ofmen’. Science cannot createlove and distribute, science

cannot create peace andhappiness and create good inter-human relationship, sciencecannot manage the conflict andconfusion going on in the mindsof the people and sciencecannot release the tension andstress of a human being.Science has not created anytools to transform a thief to anhonest person and sciencecannot transform a dacoit intoa pious and holy person.Leadership qualities are thegoodness inherent in individualsouls. Real leadership qualitiesgo beyond the physical sciencebased thought and culture. It isthe spiritual qualities of truth,non-violence, integrity, sincerity,honesty, commitment,compassion, love, imaginativesympathy, empathy, creativity,zeal, enterprising nature,enthusiasm, sense ofbelongingness, firmness etc.,when, put together, create agood leader. The growth of theorganisation

Since Prajapita Brahmacreated leaders, even after hisascension to the subtle regionleaving his mortal coil, theorganisation kept on growingmore vigorously than everbefore. One of the front lineleaders Dadi Prakashmaniji,took over the mantle ofadministration from Him, guidedthe affairs of the organisationfor more than 38 years after hisascension. She also left her bodyabout five years back. Then, thenext leader Dadi Janakiji, whois at her late 90s took over theleadership, has beensuccessfully managing theaffairs of the organisation.These events did not in any wayslowed down the growth of theInstitution. Now there are manyself managed and self propelledleaders who need not be givenorders but they themselves areable to successfully managetheir inner human resourcesand also the human resourcesoutside. When true leaders arecreated, there need not besomebody to supervise sincethese leaders know how tosupervise themselves. This kindof leadership development

which empowers oneself toably manage one’s five senseorgans and, mind-intellect-latencies combination is a self-sovereign in his/her own right.It is said that one who canmanage himself can manageothers. One who can controlhimself can control others. Atrue leader is one who has thesecapacities.The making of the Kings of

the future worldPrajapita Brahma’s life was

both kingly and saintly. As hasbeen revealed by the Lord thatwhen the life on earth comes tothe bottom line and all the soulsreach a point of commonplacestage, God descends to createNew World of peace, plenty andprosperity. Hence, as part ofthe new creation, God is alsocreating leaders who arecapable of ruling the entireworld. The number one leaderwho is created by the Lord isPrajapita Brahma. PrajapitaBrahma has set an example forothers to follow him to becomeleaders. The world cannot beruled with the force of physicalpower. It can be ruled only byspiritual power. These leaderspossess 16 celestial arts, arecompletely vice-less,completely non-violent, totallyvirtuous and righteous. Thesequalities are the quintessence ofspiritual power. At present, God,the Supreme is bestowing on


human souls the power of knowledge and thepower of yoga. As the soul comes to possessgreatness and goodness, such soultransmigrates into such human body which ismost healthy, beautiful, and handsome. Thus,physical beauty combined with pristinecharacter and spiritual powers enable theseleaders to take over the mantle of theforthcoming golden-age. As we all know thatemperors/kings were ruling this world at thebeginning of the cycle of life 5000 years ago,who were portrayed as the Father and Motherof the subjects, since these emperors and kingswere undisputable and universally acceptableleaders, as they possessed such qualities, whichothers did not possess at that point of time.Number one among these emperors was SriNarayan and his dynasty who ruled for 8generations – Narayan the 1st, the 2nd, the 3rd

and so on. As Prajapita Brahma became the1st spiritual leader of a high order, he is destinedto be Narayan the 1st. Other leaders followsuit in the subsequent generations. This is afact stranger than fiction. Democratic,autocratic, authoritarian and other ways ofgovernance will crash on their own in the timesto come. It is known to everyone that peoplecan create a leader to become Prime Minister,or a Chief Minister or Minister, but peoplecannot make anybody as the King of a countryor the world. This should be done by the Lord.Therefore, God is on earth to create Emperors/Kings for the new cycle of life on earth. On18th January, the Ascension Day of PrajapitaBrahma, we remember him and pay floraltributes to him for his memorable guidance andgreat qualities which provide us a referral pointto fulfil ourselves with the qualities that hepossessed to become great spiritual leaders.

As the day of January 18draws near,unforgettable moments

spent with Brahma Baba appearon the screen of my mind just asscenes from a film. It was theday of ascension of BrahmaBaba, when he left his mortalcoil, after attaining perfection.On remembering the days spent by me with Brahma Baba, Ibecome overwhelmed withloving emotions. Even ordinarywords spoken by Baba duringsimple conversations with mehad proved to be extraordinaryand full of blessings in my life.

Some of my experiences withBaba are mentioned below:

Supporting stick for thespiritually blind

When I was studying in B. Scin the year 1960, I joined theBrahma Kumaris institution,inspired by my elder brotherB.K.R.S. Bhatnagar, AssociateEditor of The World Renewal.After just two or three months,I gave this Godly message tosome people and they seemedto be interested in Godlyknowledge. I wrote my firstletter to Brahma Baba,informing him about this Godly

service. Baba wrote back:“Received letter of Godlyservice news from gyan PremPrakash. The child has doneGodly service as a stick for thespiritually blind.”

Even today, whenever thephrase ‘stick for the blind’ ismentioned in Baba’s Murli(Sakar Murli – the words ofknowledge spoken by ShivBaba through Brahma Baba’smouth), my mind goes back tothat time, about 50 years ago, and I am filled with a lot ofinspiration.

Service throughnewspapers

Baba often used to say in theMurli, “The relatives of thosesouls who leave their physicalbodies get news of the deathpublished in the obituarycolumns of newspapers. Thebereaved families should besent a letter explaining the trueconcept of heaven and hell.”

I prepared a draft of theletter and showed it to BrahmaBaba when I met him for thefirst time in Madhuban. Aftercarefully going through thedraft and making a fewcorrections, Baba asked me to

send the letter to the relativesof deceased persons andmotivated me to do this serviceregularly. Baba said to DidiManmohini: “Child PremPrakash has written a goodletter”. Greatly inspired byBaba’s words , I regularly didthis service, after returning toDelhi. Inspired by these letters,many of them came to thecentre, learnt Rajyogameditation and many completedone-week course of spiritualknowledge. This Godly servicecontinued for a number ofyears.

Remain hurdle-free inBrahmin life

In 1962, Baba had come toDelhi and was staying in theofficial bungalow of MajorVerma, who was follwing thisspiritual knowledge. At thattime the Indo-China war was going on and there werevacancies for short servicecommissioned officers in thearmy. Major Verma suggested me to apply for the post,assuring that he would take careof my selection. I filled up the

application form and consultedBaba on this issue. Baba, afterremaining silent for a fewmoments, said to me: “Child,service in the army, when a waris going on, will be a life ofturmoil for you. After sometime there may be a war withPakistan. You may be posted atthe border during the war, andthat may disturb your Godlylife.” Major Verma and Ireadily agreed with Baba’sviews and I abandoned the ideaof joining the army. And truly,two wars later broke out withPakistan, in 1965 and 1971, thelatter one resulting in thecreation of Bangladesh.

Though I had got a job in LifeInsurance Corporation of India,after two or three years I wasselected as a scientific officerin India MeteorologicalDepartment, and was asked toreport for duty at themeteorological office nearAmausi Airport in Lucknow.Amausi Airport is quite far fromLucknow city and those daysthere was no Brahma Kumariscentre there. When I informedDidi Manmohini, the in chargeof B.K. centres in Delhi at thattime, she immediately said ‘no’stating that I didn’t know howto prepare food, and since thecentre was far away, I might fallill and there would be nobodyto look after me. My mother

also didn’t want me to take upa job outside Delhi, and for thisreason, I agreed with both ofthem. After a few months, Iwent to Madhuban and metBaba in his room. DidiManmohini was also there. Shetold Baba how she didn’t allowme to take up a job in Lucknow.Immediately, Baba took me bythe hand and led me to thekitchen, telling Didi that shewould teach me how to preparefood. Baba showed me how toroll the chapatti (bread), andthen he took me to a brotherwho was preparing a vegetabledish and taught me how to cookvegetables. Perhaps Babawanted me to be self-dependentin cooking . This episode isabout 45 years old. BapDada(Shiv Baba and Brahma Baba) knows the past, present andfuture of His children. the South Extension centre inDelhi, I took an appointment with Mr. Gulzari Lal Nanda, thethen home minister of India, forinviting him to the SouthExtension centre. At theappointed time, he met us in abig room along with a group ofpeople. After discussing with

him some tenets of Godlyknowledge, I invited him to visitour centre. The same day, Iwrote a letter to Baba informing him about ourmeeting with the HomeMinister. I also mentioned in myletter that Mr. Nanda wantedto consult his astrologers beforevisiting our centre. The next day,in the morning Murli class,Baba mentioned that I hadinvited Mr. Gulzari Lal Nanda,but Baba was surprised to knowthat the minister wanted toconsult his astrologers.Conversation with Baba in

the hutWhen the first spiritual

museum was in the making atKrishan Pole Bazar centre inJaipur, some pictures andpictographs had to be displayedthere. At that time I was inGwalior in connection with a bigspiritual exhibition. DidiManmohini and Brother Jagdishwere also there. When thepictures to be displayed outsidethe gallery of the Krishna PoleBazar centre had been finalised,I was deputed to go toMadhuban and get finalapproval from Baba. Onreaching Madhuban, Babacalled me to his hut and, afterdiscussion, finalised thepictures. On another occasion,I discussed with Baba in his hut

BABA BLESSED “CHILD’SDEDICATION IS WHOLE-

HEARTED”

I was born and raised in a veryreligious family. At the ageof 20 when I was studying

in Indian School of Mines atDhanbad, another studentBrahma Kumar Mohan Singhalintroduced me to BrahmaKumaris Ishwariya VishwaVidyalaya. As I was interestedin Yoga, he told me that the Yogacommonly taught by Yogateachers was good for one lifeonly, but the Yoga taught by theBrahma Kumaris would benefitone for 21 births. Thisinformation generated in megreat curiosity about Rajyoga.

As there was no BrahmaKumaris Centre at Dhanbadthen, it was a matter of great joyfor me to learn that they weregoing to open a centre there too.The centre started on 8th March,1964 and on the very next day, Ireceived an invitation to cometo the centre. I experienced alight of self-realisationshining in my forehead assoon as I stepped into thecentre. Because of this spiritual

experience, I accepted everypiece of information given tome by sister B.K. SurenderDidi (presently zone inchargeVaranasi) without any note ofdisagreement.

BRAHMA BABA’SLOVING SUSTENANCE

From the day I became aBrahma Kumar, I had severaloccasions to meet withBrahma Baba and enjoyed hiscompany, which alwaysenlightened and refreshed me.These experiences I stilltreasure in my memory.Mohan Bhai and I decided tocook our own food in thehostel. One day someengineering students openedthe door of our kitchen, ate ourfood and spoiled the utensils.When we informed BrahmaBaba about the incidence, heat once directed the sister-in-charge of B.K. centre toprovide us with food cookedat the centre. Thisarrangement continued formore than four years. This

shows how kind andconsiderate Brahma Baba was,particularly to the young andnew students!BRAHMA BABA–A REAL

WELL-WISHERI became so much

intoxicated with the Godlyversions which I listened to inthe daily Murlis that at onepoint of time, I decided todiscontinue my Engineeringstudies and devote my entirelife to Godly service. When Itold Baba about my decision,he forbade me from doing soand insisted on my completingthe studies. After I finished thecollege, once again I decidedto submit myself to Godlyservice instead of taking up ajob. He said ‘No’ to myrequest. His exact words,which still echo in my ears,were “Child, your dedication iswhole hearted. Physicaldedication is not necessary; dosome job at my command.”These incidents show how kindand considerate Brahma Babawas to the children, particularly

to young and new students.CLEANSING MY PAST

KARMIC ACCOUNTThe next incident I am going

to relate made me free fromthe guilt of my past wrongs andinstilled a spirit of self-trust inme. Baba often says in theMurlis that half of our past sinswill be forgiven if we give a trueaccount of them to Shiv Babain writing. I noted down all thesins I had committed, in a note-book. After getting anappointment, I met Baba in hiscottage and told him that I hadbrought with me the account ofall my sins of the past 22 yearsof my life and that I wanted tobe absolved of all of them aspromised by Shiv Baba in HisMurlis. Baba said, “Child, ShivBaba is not going to readwhat you have penned down;He wants to hear from yourmouth”. I lost no time inreading out all that I had writtendown. I took that as a goldenopportunity to reveal everythingthat emerged in myconsciousness at that time. Inoticed that while I was readingfrom my note book, Baba’s righthand was moving as if I wasbeing cleared of my sins one byone. I felt as if I was sitting infront of a MIRROR from whichyou cannot hide anything. Thattime I felt absolutely relaxedand relieved.

As ayoung boy, Iwas verymuchinterested ingettingautographsof veryimportantpeople whomI had achance tomeet. OnceI approachedBrahmaBaba alsoand askedhim for anautograph.He directed me to see IshuDadi to whom I gave theautograph book for gettingBaba’ssignatures. Next day when Iwent to her to collect myautograph book with Baba’sautograph, she gave it backwithout the autograph saying“Baba is not a human being”.It was then that the realisationof the futility, and also of myfolly, dawned upon me. Irealised that I was asking forthe autograph of someone whois our liberator and is giving usthe knowledge about our past,present and the future.

BABA TEACHES BYACTIONS

Baba believed in teaching

the children by setting anexample for them to follow

rather than teaching them bywords of mouth. Once cartloads of bags of wheatpurchased for Madhubanarrived there but nobodytook notice of it as all werebusy in doing their work. Asthe wheat was to be cleaned,Dadi informed Baba, thoughquite innocently, that thebrothers and sisters were notcoming forward for the job.Baba asked Dadi to open upthe bags and fetch big plates.Baba then came and startedthe cleaning work himself.Within no time all thebrothers and sisters who sawBaba doing the work cameand joined him, with the


result that the whole ofwheat was cleaned up in anhour or so.THE ROLE OF FATHER

AND MOTHERAfter Mamma left her mortal

coil, Brahma Baba took uponhimself to render motherly loveto us as well. Along withLachchu Dadi he would visitrooms of all the children toensure that they had enoughcover to protect them from cold.Whenever he felt the need, hewould instruct Dadi to providethe children with extra blankets.He made it a point to have therooms sprayed to protect usfrom mosquitoes. He wouldenquire whether we had milk ornot. He took care of our healthand well-being, like a Mother.

FEEDING CHILDRENWITH LOVE

One day after the morningMurli, Baba went to theorchard near his cottage andtook me along with him. As hewas very tall, he plucked agrape from the overhangingvine and putting it into mymouth, asked me, “How does ittaste?” I thought and askedmyself, “Can there be anythingsweeter that the grape offeredto me by God Himself? Myimmediate reply to Baba’s querynaturally was “Baba, it is verysweet.”A RARE PHOTOGRAPH

WITH BABAOn another occasion, I

requested Baba for aphotograph with me. At first he

declined but a little later heasked Dada Chandrahas toclick the camera for aphotograph of Baba with me andsister Surender from Varanasiand a brother from Thailand.

There was a cowshed inMadhuban which had ten or sohealthy and beautiful cowswhom Baba had named afterGopis. One day when we wereunloading straw meant for thecows, some of the strawaccidently fell over me causinggreat irritation in my throat.Baba was all this time watchingus at work with powerful‘drishti’ outside the HistoryHall. When I told him of myproblem he fed some “Gur”(Jaggery) to me with his ownhands which cured me of mythroat problem altogether. Ireally saw the SupremeSurgeon in Baba.BABA DEPUTED ME AS

A WATCHMANIt was a matter of immense

joy and pride for me when Babagave me the responsibility of thesecurity of Pandav Bhavan.Baba would also ask me tomake chapatis(bread) andchop vegetables for the kitchenwhich I enjoyed a lot. Weourselves cooked the food forour return journey. Baba wouldvisit the ‘Bhandara’ at 6’o clocksharp. He was so punctual and


accurate that we would set our watches accordingly.Baba always gave preference to his children over

himself. Once, the son of a Governor of a city inThailand, who was studying in Banaras University,came to visit Madhuban. After the BRAHMABHOJAN, he wanted to have a snap of Baba withhis camera. Baba asked him to take the photos ofthe spiritual children first.

BABA’S SENSE OF HUMOURBaba had great sense of humour. It was a routine

with us to call meetings in the History Hall to discussimportant matters or some plan of action. Once wealso invited Baba to attend a meeting. ‘Sandalis’(seats) of three types had been kept there–one forBaba, the other for Mamma and the third forourselves. On entering the hall, Baba occupied theseat meant for us. When Baba saw subdued smileson our faces, he said that he had come to attend themeeting in the capacity of a child and not as theFather.

Baba would often assign the duty of distributingthe ‘Toli’ only to the one who claimed that he/shehad not told a lie for at least two years. It was ameans for Baba not only to make us serviceable butalso to make us turn ourselves inwards while doingany service. His approach in teaching the childrenwas psychological. First he would start with praisingour qualities and then would say, “You are gold, but,if you amend yourself, you will glitter more brightly.”

MY LIFE IS A GIFT OF BABAI have always considered this life of mine as a gift

from God. Once before leaving Madhuban, I wentto say good-bye to Baba. Baba kept standing at thegate waving his handkerchief until the taxi in which Iwas travelling disappeared from his sight. It sohappened that immediately afterwards, the rear wheelof the taxi broke away but quite strangely, it gotentangled with the axis and thus a very serious andfatal accident was avoided. After this incident, Iconsidered this life as a gift from God and have,therefore, dedicated it to His service.

Throughout these changesand developments, andup till now, man has not

come any nearer to God, not tospeak of knowing Him as andwhat He is. The man had pinnedhis hopes on the founders ofreligions and their leaders whomhe considered as gurus and whohe thought would be his guidesand mentors in his search forGod. But alas! All of them havefailed him. With the present daygurus and god-men also leadinghim up the garden path, man haspractically given up hope andalso his desire to meet God and,instead, he clamours for love andpeace as conditions in the worldhave come to such a pass thatthe man finds his very existencein danger.

The founders of religionscame here to the earth with thesole purpose of establishing theirreligions. Neither were they ableto lead us to God nor did theytake us back home, the soulworld, where souls live with theFather, the Supreme Soul. Sinceno human being knew the trueidentity of God, or our home and

when and how we can getthere, and since no humanbeing is equal to the task, therole of revealing Him andtaking us back home has beentaken over, in the scheme ofthings, by God Himself.

A soul needs a body to acthis part. Being a soul too albeitthe Supreme Soul, God is noexception to this eternal rule.He descends upon the earthand has to take loan of the bodyof an old, experienced man bythe name of Dada Lekhraj ofSindh province (now inPakistan). God names this oldman as Prajapita Brahma – thesame Brahma who is known tolakhs of Hindus as GuruBrahma for his wisdom.Brahma is thus the very firstcreation of God after Hedescends upon the earth. Andalong with Brahma, God alsoadopts a number of souls whoput their faith in Him, listen toand act upon whatever He tellsthem. As these children areadopted through Brahma, theybecome known as Brahminswho are the luckiest souls

because they not only recognizeGod but also enjoy the privilegeof meeting Him.

Brahma is also known bymany other names such asAdam, Adi Pita, Purushottam,Brahmputra, Bhagyashali Rath,Bhagirath, Nandigan etc. Heis also considered as the motherof Brahmins, as the act ofadoption of Brahmins is done byGod through Brahma by theword of mouth. That is whyGod is remembered in India asMaat-Pita (Mother-Father)whereas in the rest of the worldthe relationship between Godand souls is viewed as that ofthe Father and child.

Every nation or country hasits own festivals representing itscultural heritage and history.There are some festivals oroccasions which are celebratedall over the world like Christmas,Labour Day, and Id etc. Thereis, however, only one festivalwhich, though it concerns theentire world, is celebrated onlyin our country. We call itShivratri. Though the Hinduswho celebrate this festival everyyear are familiar with its name,they are not aware of the realsignificance of Shivratri.

Shivratri is the occasionwhich marks the coming of theDivine on the world stage. ThatShivratri is celebrated here is anample proof that the divine birthof God takes place in Bharat.

The birth of a mortal being,though he or she may be bornat the dead of night, is calledbirth-day but the birth of Shivais called Shivratri (Shiv-ratri) orthe birth-night. Why so? Havewe ever pondered over thisquestion? Without knowing theanswer, we cannot know whatShivratri really is. It is so calledbecause it describes the veryact of descending of God uponthe earth to transform thedarkness of the night(Kaliyuga) into the light of theday of love, peace andhappiness (Satyuga).

While God is the father of allsouls, Prajapita Brahma is thefather of all humanity. We cometo know only through Brahmathat God has a separate entityof His own and He has a name(Shiva), a form (point of light),a permanent residence(Paramdham or Parlok), acountry of birth (Bharat), timeof birth (the Confluence Age)and a specific task (convertingthe world in general and Bharatin particular into Heaven). Wealso know through Brahma thatGod plays three principal roleson the world stage – the role ofthe Supreme Father (He givesus immense love and theinheritance of Heaven), the roleof the Supreme Teacher (Heteaches us the way to becomepure and holy as devis and

devtas who inhabited theHeaven) and the role of theSatguru (He liberates andguides us to our home).

Another very crucial piece ofinformation revealed throughBrahma is that it is in fact ShivBaba, who has given theknowledge in Shrimat BhagwatGita (song of God’s wisdomsung by Him), the holy scriptureheld in high esteem by theHindus all over the world. Gitais regarded as the fountain-headand, therefore, the essence ofall the scriptures. Theknowledge of Gita is notdirected at a single person(Arjun) but it is for the benefitof all the human beings,irrespective of their caste,creed, race, gender or religion,to motivate them to turn over anew leaf.

The role of Brahma is veryimportant – and unique. He isnot only the mouthpiece of Godbut also a role model and livingexample for the Brahmins tofollow the directions of God.Since God comes to meet Hischildren after a very long time,and as expected of a father, Hecreates Heaven on the earththrough Brahma and bequeathsthis Heaven to His children astheir inheritance.

When I first came to knowabout Brahma in 1981 (I heardBrahma being addressed as

Brahma Baba and God as ShivBaba), I was instantly drawntowards him although I hadnever met him during hislifetime. Some voice inside mewhispered that here was theguru of the Kabir’s couplet whowould surely unite me withGovind. I felt like a long-lostchild who finally comes hometo his parents and the rest of thefamily. At the same time, I wasalso sad because I consideredmyself to be unlucky not tohave a chance of meetingBrahma Baba and, through him,Shiv Baba in person. Thisfeeling was, however, short-lived when I learnt that thoughBrahma Baba had left hismortal coil and had achievedangelic stage, both BrahmaBaba and Shiv Baba were stillvery much active in the serviceof their children and willcontinue to be doing so till theobjective of creating heaven onthe earth is achieved and thechildren are ready to leave forhome before coming back toinhabit that heaven. In fact,Brahma Baba, like Shiv Baba,has become free from the limitsof time and distance and hasbeen doing greater service to themankind than ever before.

Together, Brahma Baba andShiv Baba are addressed asBaap-Dada. The title beautifullydescribes the loving relationship


between both of them on the one handand between them and the Brahmins onthe other. Brahma is our Dada (elderbrother) as he is also a soul like us all. Ifwe relate to Brahma as our father(Prajapita) then God would be ourgrandfather (Dada) as Brahma is also achild of God as we are. Our relationshipwith God as Grandfather is sweeterbecause grandsons are always lovelier andalso are the rightful inheritors ofgrandfather’s property.

Brahma Baba serves as the real guruas contemplated by Kabir in his couplet.He introduces us to Govind or, let us say,Govind introduces Himself to us throughthe medium of Brahma Baba. Both theguru (Brahma) and the Govind (God), toall intents and purposes, are combined andinseparables. God cannot play His rolewithout Brahma as His medium andBrahma would have been nothing withoutGod taking the loan of his body. Althoughso close to Shiv Baba, Brahma neverclaimed to be God but always said that hewas only a servant of the children and ofGod who had chosen him to spread Hismessage of Gita to the humanity at large.Brahmins love them both. Therefore, thereis no such problem or predicament withthem, which Kabir referred to in thecouplet quoted above, because payingrespect to the one is as good as payingrespect to the other. No question,therefore, of touching the feet of eitherbecause the guru says that he is only aninstrument of Govind, and whatever hedoes is at His bidding, and Govind, beingincorporeal, says He has no feet.

Moods play a majorrole in our lives. They govern our

feelings and actions and if notmanaged well, they can createhavoc and chaos in our mindsleading to depression and othermental illnesses. Do you findthat something as simple as theweather or the morningheadlines can alter your mood?

Moods are basic psycholo-gical states that can occur as areaction to an event or cansurface for no apparent externalcause. A mood is an internal,subjective state. It is also arelatively long lasting emotionalstate. Moods differ fromemotions in that they are lessspecific, less intense and lesslikely to be triggered by aparticular stimulus. Peoplespeak of being in a good moodor a bad mood and this oftenlasts for days and not hours asin the case of a feeling or anemotion. Moods also differ fromtemperament or personalitytraits which are long lasting.

Moods can manipulate howindividuals interpret andtranslate the world around them,and can also direct theirbehaviour. A research done byNiedenthal and Setterlund

(1994) showed that individualsare tuned to perceive things thatare congruent with their currentmood. Both the pessimist andoptimist will prove themselvesright as they manifest whatthey have interpreted throughthe lens of their mood!

According to psychologistRobert Thayer, mood is aproduct of two dimensions:energy and tension. A personcan be energetic or tired whilealso being tense or calm.According to Thayer, peoplefeel best when they are in acalm-energy mood, and worstwhen in a tense-tired state. The low energy arousalcoupled with tension, asexperienced in a bad mood, canbe counteracted by walking. Thayer suggests walking as ameans to enhanced happiness.(Wikipedia, 2011)

Research has shown that,contrary to the stereotype of thesuffering artist, creativity isenhanced most by positivemoods and happy thoughts.

People have often used foodto regulate mood. Take forexample chocolates, yes thatdark gold bar of purehappiness! The benefits ofdark chocolate come from

resveratrol, an antioxidant andimmune system booster. It alsohas the ability to boost brainlevels of endorphins as well asserotonin, a mood-alteringchemical on which manyantidepressants act. Therecommended dose, however, isonly one ounce per day, soremember not to overindulge. Wine has been used for eons tocreate a romantic mood.

German researchers studyinggarlic’s effect on cholesteroldiscovered that participantsbeing treated with garlicexperience an elevation inmood. Now this does notnecessarily mean good mood; italso implies that one canbecome e-motional – ‘energy isin motion’ and perhaps not onein control! Pilots are advisednot to eat garlic up to 72 hoursbefore flying as it slows downconcentration and doubles ortriples reaction time. Knowingwhat to eat is an important partof food-mood management!

Music can also alter moods. Niedenthal and Setterland usedmusic to induce positive andnegative moods. Sad musicwas used as a stimulus to inducenegative moods, andparticipants labelled other thingsas also negative. This provesthat people’s current moodstend to affect their judgmentand perception in all areas oftheir lives. Surround yourselfwith music that will uplift yourspirits and not one that will strip

are less predictable and difficultto work with. They are needy,stroppy, self–centered, procras-tinators and susceptible tosulking. People are less inclinedto want to work with them asthe other party is not alwayssure of how they may react andso they hesitate to even askthem for favours. People whohave a stable and consistentmood make the best leaders. They have a focus andconsistently keep their visionwell oiled.

The difference between aresponse and a reaction is that a‘re-s-ponse’ is thought out orpondered over whereas a re-action is to re-enact somethingthat has taken place previously. For example… you begin yourday with an argument with yourspouse. As you drive to work,you mull over this incident in yourmind. By the time you get towork, the receptionist greets youwith a big bright smile (as she istrained to) and at that momentyou ask her in an irritated tone,what has she got to smile about! The anger built up from an earlierincident is brought forward to thepresent incident; you havebrought forward the anger. Partof learning to manage moods isto be able to segregate incidentsin our mind and not to let themoverlap.

Sickness and ill health can also

make a person short fused andless tolerant. We becomevulnerable and susceptible –knee jerk reactions. When thebody is sick, we have to ensurethe mind is not! And so for timeslike this, we need to be sure thatwe have acquired enough powerthrough meditation that will assistus at a time of need. Thehealing process will be faster ifwe maintain the right attitude!

Hormones also play a majorpart in understanding whycertain moods erupt at certaintimes. Coupled with modernday stress, it creates anarchy inthe soul. Learning tounderstand the workings of themind and body is the key toprevention.

The atmosphere of a place

can also induce certain moods. Walk into a church or hospital,funeral parlour or shopping malland you certainly won’t befeeling the same way inside. Know what you want andsurround yourself with healthyand positive people and beselective about the places youfrequent.

It’s time… to takeresponsibility and not allowexternal factors to affect yourmood. As a master of yourmind and body, take time tounderstand what triggers yourmoods. Play some light musicevery day to soothe your soul. Eat your meals in a mindfulstate. And slow down beforeyou end up in a mood ditch thatis hard to get out of!

the possibility of foreigners’ coming to Madhuban for spiritualenlightenment, though there was no Brahma Kumaris centreoutside India at that time. Baba often used to say in Murlisthat foreigners would receive Godly knowledge and wouldcome to India in large numbers. Today this has come trueand one can see foreigner brothers and sisters in largenumbers in Pandav Bhawan, Gyan Sarovar and Shantivan.Now, when I go to Baba’s hut, the old, sweet memories ofconversations with Baba become fresh in my mind and I amoverwhelmed with spiritual ecstacy. I really feel myself veryfortunate for the divine love Baba has showered on me.

In this long spiritual journey of more than 50 years, I cameacross many hurdles and storms in my Brahmin life, but whenI remembered the precious moments spent with BrahmaBaba, those hurdles seemed insignificant. The valuableteachings and guidance from Baba have supported me like arock in my spiritual life.

Brahma Baba had greatpower of discrimination.He used to advance

each child on the basis of his/her qualities. He used to say thatthe inner qualities are ourgreatest asset. He used to seeeach child with spiritual visiontranscending caste, religion,colour of skin and language andaddress the children with thesweet words like–“SweetChildren”, “Spiritual Children”“long-lost, and now-found(“sikkiladhe”) children”. Thesewords used to touch the depthof our heart. People in this worldsay “today’s children aretomorrows’ leaders”, but Babaused to say “children would bedeities in the new world.”

Once a recluse (Sanyasi)nurturing many misconceptionsabout the Brahma Kumarisinstitution came to meet Baba.Baba addressed him sweetlysaying “come sweet child” andoffered his seat to him. He waswonderstruck with Baba’sbehaviour. Baba said: “Child, youhave sustained this Creation withthe power of purity; you are agreat soul”. This sweet talk ofBaba bent his frame of mind

favourably.It is well known that Baba

always gave an elevated placeto virgins and mothers. BrahmaBaba would bless thedisappointed souls, saying“Success is your birth right”.When someone explaineddifficulties on the path ofachieving positive results, Babaused to say “Kaaran batanamana swayamko Karagarmain band Karna” (i.e. givingreasons for not doing is likeshutting the self in a prison).Baba used to highlight that theperson who brings excuseswith the word “lekin” (but) cannot progress in life. He used tosay that the word ‘No’ is notfound in Baba’s dictionary.Baba used to teach to say“Hanji” (Yes Sir). Baba wantedto make every child an ‘all-rounder’ in the field of service.Divine virtues like purity,truthfulness, humility andpatience bring success inservice. If the child does notknow a particular job, he shouldrequest Baba to teach him howto do that work. Brahma Babaalways used to keep completefaith in Shiva Baba’s powers.

Baba inspired me a lotI was only twelve years old

when I came to Madhuban.First of all, Baba made meresponsible for service in Baba’sroom. He instructed LachchuDadi to teach me about the jobsto be done in Baba’s room.Baba blessed me with thewords: ‘This child will never say‘no’ to service. This child istireless in service.’ Even then Idid not have capacity orexperience to do anything, butBaba knew my future. Hetaught me everything with greatlove. Every day, he filled mewith spiritual gaze (RuhaniDrishti), spiritual and Godlypowers, hope, enthusiasm andblessings. Baba’s selfless love,sweet words and spiritualpersonality used to attract menaturally towards him as if Iwas being dragged by amagnet. It will not be a high talkto say – “He was like atouchstone (Paras) thattransformed everything thatcame in contact with atouchstone”. He used toaddress everyone as “sweetchild”, see only their qualitiesand specialties and promotethem based on these. Manytimes, Baba used to say thateven if there are no worldlyspecialties and the child hasrecognised God and acceptedHim as his father. This itself isthe greatest specialty. This luck

is available only to one inmultimillions. Sometimes Babaused to say: “This child also willbe master of the universe” andthis enhanced my enthusiasmand hope. Being a small child, Igot opportunity to serve in therooms of Pitashri Brahma andMateshwari JagadambaSaraswati. Because of this, Ienjoyed the luck of receivingBaba’s drishti (gaze) and toli(sweets), snacks, fruits etc.,every day from Baba’s lotushands. Many times, Baba usedto feed me into my mouth. Thissupreme luck has kept meaway from attractions of thisworld, and on the lap of oneBaba in the corporeal form.

Baba had got some newrooms constructed inMadhuban. These rooms werenot having electricity. Babataught me how to clean theglass of lantern by cleaning itwith his own hands. I was giventhe responsibility of lightinglanterns and placing them inevery room every night.Sometimes, the glass got brokenwhile cleaning. Baba, the oceanof love, used to say: “Be carefulnext time” with much love.Even after this, when I brokethe glass, there was no dearthof love in Baba, and he used toexplain with much more love.

When Baba established acowshed in Madhuban with

about two dozen cows, he calledme, put his lotus hands on myhead with great love and askedme sweetly: “Bachchu,Gaushalaki ZimmewariUthaoge? (“Sweet child, willyou take responsibility of thecowshed?”). Even though, I didnot have any experience, I said“Yes Baba”. Merely by saying“Yes”, I felt as if Baba had filledme with power and capabilityfor doing everything. Baba usedto visit the cowshed daily andenquire about my welfare andgive necessary instructions.

Many times Baba used tofeed green grass to the cows.

He used to say “There will befirst class cows with ShriKrishna also. In the pictureabove, I am standing along withBaba who was feeding greenleaves of sugarcane to cows.This picture is a wonder andeternal memorial of my spirituallife. Baba used to refuse to take

his photo usually. That day Babahimself asked Late DadaChandrahas to take photo. Thisphoto kindles sweet memoriesof Baba’s company in myspiritual life. This also remindsme of the song: “Bachpankedin bhulanadena…”. (Don’tforget the days of childhood).

Baba himself taught me tomake roti/chapati) with his ownhands. Baba used to say thatfood should be prepared in thesweet remembrance of ShivaBaba and should be consumedin His remembrance and remindothers to do the same.

Once Baba told me: “Child,you are doing service with bodyand mind, but you can do servicewith money also. It meanssaving yagya’s material fromspoilage and wasting. He gaveanother example: “if you look


after cows well and they produce milk worth one andhalf rupees by consuming feed worth one rupee, thenthe saving of fifty paisa will be credited to your account”.

meditation. Seeing this, once a child asked Baba whyhe woke up so early. Baba said: “When this Baba wasa jeweller in Calcutta, steamers used to come late inthe night and used to have good customers who gavehim good earning. When there was good income, sleepwas automatically lost. Now this Baba is a merchantof jewels of knowledge and has lent his body to ShivaBaba for service. The whole day Shiva Baba doesspiritual service through this body.” Hence BrahmaBaba had to make his efforts during the night. Pitashriused to conduct early morning (amritvela) Yoga at 4a.m. During the day, he used to take rest for hardly anhour. During this period also, he could not take rest ashe used to see off children who left Madhuban—nearthe banyan tree adjacent to Kamal Kunj Bhawan.

Baba used to tell Manmohini Didi that she shouldinform Baba if any child wanted to meet Baba, even ifit was his resting time. No child should be deprived ofopportunity to meet Baba. Baba always had the intentionto touch the depth of the heart of spiritual children andawaken their dormant powers. He wished that everychild should progress towards the higher destination bytranscending low thoughts. During his last year in thephysical form, Baba was very near his “KarmateetStage” (beyond the effects of actions). I observed Babasitting in deep contemplation on Shiva Baba in Bodilessstage. He used to urge the children to practiseremembrance of Shiva Baba on the terrace of buildingsin Madhuban. Baba used to quote Raja Janak’s soulbeing ruler of the subtle organs of the soul-mind andintellect and as an example of being “Videhi” or bodiless.Pitashri Brahma used to stand outside the History Hallafter Amritvela Meditation and give drishti makingchildren to experience subtle stage (Avyakt Sthithi).

Getting inspired isn’t a task soarduous,

For, inspiration, my friend, is allaround us.

It isn’t something only greatminds find,

It is rejoiced by every observantmind.

High up, the golden sun I see —So distinct, despite thedistance, stands he.

A little lower are the clouds solovely

That teach me to change withtime, happily.

A little below, are the birdsyellow and red

Flying hurriedly home, carryingbread.

During 1988-89, I was afinal year student ofengineering. The

information that was coming tothe students of engineering wasvery disturbing. Two or threebatches of passed outengineering students weresitting idle for lack of jobsthroughout the country. Thescenario was completelydifferent and job market wasbooming when we enrolled asengineering students. Now thestudents, particularly from theengineering stream, were veryupset. As I come from a lowermiddle class family, I could notthink of starting business of myown.

Fortunately, immediatelyafter passing, I got a job in areputed multi-national companywith handsome salary and perks.After joining, I found that in myjob there was not muchapplication of the knowledge thatI had gained during myengineering student life withvery hard work and dedication.I used to remain frustrated. Istarted to think that I would behappy only if I got a job where Icould apply my technicalknowledge. I started applying

for different jobs and within afew months, I got a job asfaculty in a RegionalEngineering College (now,National Institute ofTechnology).

Teaching had always beenmy passion. During my studentlife, while staying in hostel, Ihad been teaching highersecondary students withpleasure, for my pocket money.Nevertheless, within one yearof joining the new job, I startedfeeling depressed as there was

little scope to deal with real lifetechnical problems. Mymarriage and new friendsoccupied me for a few years,but the very thought of notgetting job satisfaction waspinching me constantly. Though,apparently nothing could beguessed from outside, I was

not at all happy from within. Istarted applying for new jobsand soon joined another reputedpost graduate level technicalinstitute at aplace betterconnected geo-graphically, andalso known for its consultancyservices. There I found that allmy senior colleagues werehighly qualified and almost all ofthem had Ph.D. degree. The‘comparison’ made meunhappy again.

To get rid of my unhappiness,I decided to register for Ph.D.in an IIT. After completing allthe formalities and clearing theselection process, I joined theIIT as research scholar. Threehectic years with 15 to 17 hoursof work passed before Icompleted my PhD. Then Ireturned to my parent institute.But new demands werecoming. I was expectingpromotion in my job; I was alsonot happy with my two-wheelerand was thinking of having a car,whereas my wife was pressingme for a flat. I was passingthose unhappy years of lifefulfilling my demands, one afteranother. I had started thinkingabout financial security of mydaughters. I was alwaysrunning after some goal andwhen the goal was achieved orwas about to be achieved, Iwould set another goal.

Kumaris, meant for professors, The contents of theworkshop were not entirely new to me but I wasvery much impressed and surprised by B.K.sisters, who were very simple, frank and most ofall, happy. I started thinking: what makes them sohappy and content. To get my answer, I visited thelocal centre of the BKs.I attended the seven-day courseoffered by them at my convenient time. The coursechanged my attitude towards life.

Since childhood I had been following some basicrules/principles of life taught by my grandfather, whowas an Ayurvedic medicine practitioner (Kabiraj) andmy father. In the morning, I used to pray to God toseek His blessings and plan for the day’s work. I wouldavoid harsh language and control my anger as muchas possible. I also tried to help others. I believed thatthere is no shortcut to success, which comes only byhard work. Success does not mean degrading others,but to elevate oneself. At night, on bed, I analysed theday’s performance and thanked God for everything.Now I think that these basic rules/principles mayestablish a person as per his capability in the society,but they don’t guarantee happiness.

During my professional life, I suffered from twodiseases: ‘comparison’ and ‘not enjoying life as ajourney’. Sometimes a person himself becomes a victimof comparison; or he may be instigated by the remarksof other people. For me, it was both. Then, I thoughtthat ‘happiness’ is conditional: If I get this or that, thenI would be happy. But the greed or desire would neverstop. By the time a person fulfils one desire, anotherdesire comes to his mind. Now I have understood thathappiness is a state of mind. A happy person is happy,not because everything is right in his life. HE ISHAPPY BECAUSE HIS ATTITUDE TOWARDSEVERYTHING IN HIS LIFE IS RIGHT. Tochange one’s attitude is not easy. It requires a constantflow of positive energy. I found answers to all myquestions in Rajyoga Meditation, which bringscontentment in life and is the most effectivemethod of self-empowerment.

of value education for a longtime. It has also been workingin many other areas, including woman-empowerment. One ofthe many initiatives it has takenin Empowering Women isestablishment of Shakti Niketan,a hostel for girl students atIndore, in Madhya PradeshState of India.

The girls from all over thecountry come and reside herenot merely for studies but alsofor making a bright careercombined with equally wonderfulcharacter. The hostel is abeautiful bouquet of fragrantflowers from different states of

India, with the inmates’ distinctidentity imbued with the feelingof being the proud citizens of agreat country. The diversity ofreligion, culture and languageyet unity of spirit are a proof ofthe parents’ faith and theresidents’ adventurous spiritand firm determination in value-system.

The inmates lead a highlydisciplined life, which theythemselves have chosen,willingly and happily. Thisfreedom of choice comes fromtheir conscience and it goes along way in making their mindsbroad, benevolent and brilliant.The self-respect and self-worthof the girls find expression inall fields of their activity. Thus,

this spiritual and inner disciplineseems favourable to them andit helps them flourish theirtalents and capabilities. Whileresiding in Shakti Niketan, thegirl inmate girls carry out all theduties themselves. This self-dependence prepares them verywell for future lives and neverallows them to be a burden onothers.

The resident girls get up earlyin the morning at 3.30 A.M. topractise meditation, and listeningto devotional music and spiritualdiscourses. Most of themobserve silence up to 8 A.M.,which goes a long way for theirinner empowerment. They learnto be punctual and regular as aresult of which most of themexcel in studies. Being careful,simple, clean and clear, theyexperience affinity of God whileperforming daily chores andstudy. The hostel has properarrangement to train them invarious skills and arts of life–computers, cooking, painting,dancing, vocal and instrumentalmusic, acting, oratory, writing,dramatics, writing poems,participating in debates, interiordecoration, and hospitality etc.They also learn to be humbleand cheerful in life.

At Shakti Niketan, theinmates also learn the basicprinciples of spiritual life, whichprovide them training to lead ahappy, pure, peaceful and


meaningful life. They learn the lessons ofspirituality under the guidance of senior B.K. sistersand brothers and also get opportunity to inter-actwith and learn from various Rajyogi souls whooccasionally visit this eminent temple of learning.The girls observe noble code of conduct anddiscipline which is a matter of pride for ShaktiNiketan. The hostel is the result of visionary zeal,enthusiasm and guidance of Brahma KumarRajyogi Bro.Om Prakash ji, who founded this hostelabout 31 years ago. Due to his constant inspiration,the hostel has been progressing by leaps andbounds.

Presently, total 150 girls students from Rajasthan,Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Orissa,Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Assam,Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Chhattisgarh, M.P.,Manipur, Nepal and Dubai are residing here. Thesestudents not only prepare their own food but alsoobserve purity of food and never consume foodprepared in the market.

The inmates are not allowed to keep mobilephones with themselves. Poetry is a talent possessedby observant and creativeminds. An important

It waswith the view of getting morepeople into this art, that weorganized a poetry competitionwhich we called “CreativeOnline Poetry Contest 2012”under the aegis of The WorldRenewal. We used Facebook asour main medium to connect withthe contestants. The contest wasalso popularized through B.K.Centres and other B.K. media,coordinated by B.K. Bro.Santosh of The World Renewal.

We had initially targeted onlycontestants from India. Later, wewere overwhelmed to haveparticipation from other countrieslike USA, England, U.K., Serbiaand Nigeria. The contest wassupervised and guided by B.K.Ranjit Fuliya, Associate Editorof The World Renewal. B.K.Yogesh Kumar, Copy Editor atHT Media Ltd., and I, Dhwani,

had put the pieces together inorder to put up a successfulevent. The competition wasannounced on November 8,2012 and the enthusiasticcontestants started sending inentries the same day. Theirenthusiasm boosted up ours.The deadline was November30, 2012. Total 54 entries werereceived from all over India andthe countries mentioned earlier.There were four categoriesfor contestants to pick from:1. Inspiration,2. Creativity–the Music of Life3. Inter-Religious Harmony,4. Woman as Homemaker

The topic “Inspiration”received the maximum numberof entries.

The entries were judged bya Jury panel consisting ofeminent litterateurs: Prof.(Retd.) A.L. Madaan, Dr.Jyoti Taneja (pen nameManasi) and Mrs. NeelamKulshreshth.

Prof. (Retd.) A. L.Madaan is an eminentlitterateur and a scholar of

Hindi and English. He retired asH.O.D. (English) fromR.K.S.D. College, Kaithal andthen worked as Principal of JatCollege, Kaithal. His worksinclude novels, plays, poetry,translation of an epic and someliterary works. Deeply spiritual,he has real concern for valuesin society and all his works areimbued by this milieu. Prof.Madaan has penned thirtybooks. His latest work‘’Doosra Arun’’ is a novel forchildren. He is a playwright ofnational eminence and his playshave been broadcast on A.I.Rand Doordarshan.
