TABLE OF CONTENTS

In 1996 mountain biking and triathlon met in a duel of thefittest on the island of Maui. The race consisted of an open-ocean swim, a mountain bike race, and a trail run. Itrepresented a bold new racing format that attractedoutdoor enthusiasts, adventure seekers, mountain bikersand triathletes. The mountain bikers brought their laid-backstyle and bold self-assurance. The triathletes brought theirhard-core training and avid dedication. They soondiscovered a common spirit and attitude that pulled themtogether. For as different as they are, neither could resistthe challenges and thrills this new multisport offered. Since that day XTERRA has grown into the world’s leadingoff-road triathlon with more than 100 races in 13 countriesthis year, including 60 in the XTERRA America Tour alone. The typical XTERRA is comprised of the following:1.5 kilometer (0.93-mile) swim in an ocean, lake, or river30 kilometer (18.6-mile) mountain bike on off-road trails10 kilometer (6.2-mile) trail run on a variety of surfaces2009 marks the 13th consecutive year of expansion forXTERRA with races in 32 states, and welcomes a neweight-stop nationwide Cup Series racing format. Each of XTERRA’s eight regions in the U.S. will host anXTERRA Cup championship race with $10,000 in prizemoney for pros and 41 qualifying spots into the XTERRAWorld Championship for amateurs. Age group competitorswill also earn points at the Cup Series races in pursuit ofwinning their region and qualifying for the invite-onlyXTERRA USA Championship held in Utah on Sept. 26.This guide will breakdown the who, what, when, where andwhy of the XTERRA South Central Cup race - andintroduce you to some of the professional athletes that willrace in the world’s premier off-road triathlon in North LittleRock, Arkansas.

Produced by

ON THE COVER: 2008 XTERRA U.S. Pro Series ChampionsMelanie McQuaid and Conrad Stoltz on top, and XTERRA AmateurNational Champions Joshua Olmstead and Erin Kummer on bottom.ABOVE: Shonny Vanlandingham at Southeast Cup in Pelham, AL.

For the last five years Fred Phillips at DLT Events hashosted the XTERRA Dawg Dayz point series race here, andthanks to his efforts, the North Little Rock Visitors Bureau, and the grand folks from the Heart of Arkansas, it hasturned into a major championship event. As such, some of the world’s best all-around athletes aregathering in central Arkansas this week to compete in theinaugural XTERRA South Central Cup off-road triathlon. The course itself in Burns Park (one of the largest municipalparks in America) is pure XTERRA with a swim in VictoryLake (an enclosed waterskiing section of the ArkansasRiver), a mountain bike course comprised of 80% rocky, twisty, tree-lined single track, and a cliff-climbing, meadow-meandering trail run with panoramic views of Little Rock. There are is also a half-distance race and relay teamoptions available, and on Sunday fat tire enthusiasts canrevel in the “3 legged Dawg” mountain bike race, part of theUSA Cycling MTB national calendar.PRO RACE PREVIEWThe XTERRA South Central Cup is race No. 6 in the eight-stop nationwide XTERRA Cup Series for pros, and with justthree races remaining, the pressure is on. After suffering a sizeable (7-stitch) gash to the top of his footat Sunday’s XTERRA Atlantic Cup in Richmond, Virginia(which he won anyway), Cup Series leader Conrad “theCaveman” Stoltz will sit this race out. His absence opensthe door for his countryman and protégé Dan Hugo. Thesports young South African star, at 23-years-old, won hisfirst XTERRA Championship on the America circuit just twoweeks ago at the Northwest Cup in Idaho. The other fourrace wins have all belonged to Stoltz. With a victory here inArkansas, Hugo (in theory) could still win the rest of theraces and enter the finale – the XTERRA USAChampionship in Utah on Sept. 26 – in a points tie for 1stwith Stoltz. It would be a remarkable feat, especiallyconsidering the quality and depth of the field around him.Foremost is America’s greatest hope, four-time nationalchamp Josiah Middaugh from Vail, Colorado who hasfinished second three times this season, and third in theother race. Canadian Mike Vine is fourth in the Series, behind the aforementioned trio, and proved he’s capable of

the top step on any given day after taking down all of themat last year’s USA Championship race. France’s NicoLebrun, the 2005 XTERRA World Champ and three-timeXTERRA European Tour Champ, was a minute away from awin in Richmond on Sunday and placed second the weekbefore in Idaho. Colorado stand-outs Seth Wealing andBrian Smith have also won their share of big races, andseem just about due to breakout in 2009.In the women’s race Canadian Melanie McQuaid, a 3-timeXTERRA World Champ, has been simply unstoppable. FiveCup races, five Cup wins in 2009. She’s won nine of herlast 11 since the start of ‘08, and 23 XTERRA Championshipwins in her career. One of America’s all-time greatest cyclists and the mostsuccessful mountain biker in NORBA history, ShonnyVanlandingham, has one of those two race victoriesMcQuaid didn’t get, and is the most likely candidate to stealanother one from McQuaid here. “Shonny V” rides forOrbea and how cool would it be to win big in their backyard(Orbea USA is headquartered in Little Rock). Others in the chase include mountain bike specialist JennySmith from New Zealand and swimming star (she’ll comeout of the water with the lead men) Christine “Big Fish”Jeffrey from Canada. Also of note is Olympian RebeccaDussault (2006 Winter Olympics) from Colorado, who is inher first-year racing in the off-road circuit and showing signsthat she’s figuring it all out (placed 6th in last two races).

Swim Course: 1-Mile in Victory Lake - an enclosed waterskiing section of the Arkansas River - is usually dead flat, semiclear, and warm. There is a 250-yard run from the swim exit to the transition area. Expected water temperatures will bein the mid to upper 80's.

Bike Course: 17 miles. Two-lap course. 80% single track, 20% double. Some sections are tight and twisty, others arebig chain ring. Includes a couple gnarly downhills, a couple tough climbs, rocks, roots, and trees. The 11-mile loopstarts with a mix of semi-loose and tight single track, rolling wooded switchbacks, and a monster hill that takes racers toa bluff overlooking the venue with an awesome view of downtown Little Rock. Then it’s back in the thick of it with quadburner ups, open forest, and screaming fast flats.

Run Course: 6.3 Miles. Combination of single track, dirt road, meadows and pavement. A small cliff, a few obstacles, aBilly goat path, one multiple switch back descent and undulating terrain and a view of the Little Rock skyline. It “kicksyour butt early” said Andrew Marsh, “with a ½ mile climb from T2 to the highest point on the course via a steep loosegravel road. Then it’s into the woods for a full complitment of shaded trails, log jumps, and welcoming ¼ mile camp roadbreather mid course.”

At about the same time the endurance communitycelebrated the life of cycling and triathlon great Steve Larsen (who passed away on Tuesday, May 19) with memorialrides and runs in his hometown of Bend, OR, many of Larsen’s friends in sport were riding and running in honor of himin the southern woods of Alabama.Leading the charge was Stoltz, who said "the technical parts are usually my strengths, but today I couldn't focus. I didfeel like I had amazing strength today though. This was a great victory for Steve."Many of the riders dedicated their efforts today to Larsen and his family, including Stoltz and McQuaid."Steve was such a huge inspiration for me coming from a mountain biking background. I felt really strong today,” saidMcQuaid. It was certainly a day where XTERRA athletes could find inspiration all around, as even the sports all-timewinningest athlete Jamie Whitmore (cancer survivor/battler) came out from California to be one of the race announcers. In addition, TEAM 413 Gracerunner ministries held a sunrise service before the race and all paused for a moment ofsilence in Larsen’s memory.

RACE # 4 - 2009 XTERRA NORTHWEST CUP RESULTSFarragut State Park - Athol, ID (June 6, 2009) - Melanie McQuaid stayed perfect in 2009 while Dan Hugo brokethrough at the XTERRA Northwest Cup at Farragut State Park just north of Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho this afternoon.Over the last two years on the XTERRA America Tour the 23-year-old from Stellenbosch, South Africa (the same home-town as Conrad Stoltz) finished in the top 4 in seven straight races including three runner-ups, but today the sportsyoungest and brightest star found the top step for the first time. "It sure did help that Josiah (Middaugh) and Mike (Vine)weren't here and Conrad got a puncture, but it's a great start and I'm super excited," said the ever-humble Hugo.Hugo came out of the swim in the incredibly gorgeous Lake Pend Oreille (the 5th deepest lake in the U.S. at 1,158-feet)with the lead pack that included Stoltz, Craig Evans, Seth Wealing, and Christine Jeffrey in just over 22 minutes. Asplanned, Hugo stuck on Stoltz’ wheel until about three-quarters of the way through the first of two 11-mile loops on thebike when a nail lodged itself sideways through Stoltz’ tire and Hugo found himself all alone in front, where he stayed therest of the way. In the women’s race “Big Fish” Jeffrey put nearly three minutes on McQuaid during the swim and heldthe lead through the first lap of the bike where McQuaid was 1:30 back, but by the bike-to-run transition McQuaid –boosted by the best bike of the day (1:33:31) – was more than four minutes in front. Danelle Kabush made up a minuteon Jeffrey to finish in 2nd (her best of the year), and Jeffrey was 3rd to make it an all-Canadian top three. “Canadiansrule, ehh,” said Jeffrey.

RACE # 5 - 2009 XTERRA NORTHWEST CUP RESULTSRichmond, Virginia (June 14, 2009) - The legend of the Caveman continues to grow. Conrad Stoltz sliced open thetop of his foot shuffling across the bottom of the James River while helping to put a course buoy back in place just threeminutes before the cannon blast signaled the start of the XTERRA Atlantic Cup in downtown Richmond, and crushed thefield anyway. "The cut was so deep I could see tendons," said Stoltz, who posted a series of graphic pre-and-post oppictures on his facebook page. Fellow competitor and long-time XTERRA ambassador Dr. Kathy Coutinho of Fairfax Station, VA helped wrap plasticaround the wound literally seconds before the start and off he went. News of the carnage spread quickly, and Dr. MattMarchal of Altius Family and Sports Medicine was waiting for Stoltz in the swim-to-bike transition where he poured per-oxide and bandaged the wound and sent the Caveman on his way in a matter of seconds (his T1 split was 46 seconds!)."Dr. Matt was waiting by my bike and it was like a Nascar pit stop, took no time at all," said Stoltz, who went on to havethe fastest bike split (1:01:44) and hit the run with a one-minute lead over Middaugh and Hugo and ultimately won therace Curt Schilling-style with a bloody shoe. After a series of high fives and "holy cow" comments after crossing the fin-ish line Stoltz was back with Dr. Marchal getting cleaned up, stitched up (seven in all), and iced up all while chatting non-chalantly with the local TV and Richmond Times Dispatch reporters. It was his fourth win in five years in Richmond andfourth win in five XTERRA Cup Series races this season. In women's race Melanie McQuaid, "inspired by Conrad, the tough guy of the year award winner" led from start-to-fin-ish and stayed perfect in an overwhelmingly imperfect, unpredictable sport. It's McQuaid's fifth straight XTERRA CupSeries win this year, and second-in-a-row in Richmond. The weather in Richmond was downright pleasant, cool with overcast conditions.

The XTERRA America Tour is designed to provide age group athletes with a bona-fide championship to compete forwithin their geographic region. At the end of the regular season the top performers in each of eight regions are invited tocompete against other athletes their same age - but from different regions - at the national championship in Utah onSeptember 26. This year there are 60 races in 32 states across the country, as well as the U.S. Territory of Guam andCommonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan). It marks the 13th straight year of expansion for XTERRA.Here's how the Series works:1) CHOOSE REGION: There are 8 regions, determined by a competitor's primary residence at the time of their first race:NORTHEAST (NE) - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York.ATLANTIC (AT) - Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington D.C.SOUTHEAST (SE) - Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands.MIDWEST (MW) - Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky.SOUTHCENTRAL (SC) - Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas.MOUNTAIN (MT) - Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming.NORTHWEST (NW) - Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska.WEST (W) - California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Pacific Territories.2) DETERMINE YOUR DIVISION/AGE GROUP: "XTERRA Age" is based on a competitor's age on December 31, 2009.Athletes compete in the following age categories: 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60+(w), 60-64 (m), 65-69 (m), 70+ (m), and we also have Collegiate and Physically Challenged Divisions.

Collegiate Division: To qualify as a collegiate athlete, a current student ID must be presented at registration. When there are at least three athletes from two or more schools, a team award will also be presented. Athletes in the collegiate division get collegiate points (not age group points).Physically Challenged Division: There are two physically challenged age groups, 15-39 and 40+, and 6 categories:Below the knee amputee, above the knee amputee, below the elbow amputee, above the elbow amputee, blind and impaired/les autres.

3) RACE AND SCORE: Series competitors race for points at their choice of 60 events - including XTERRA Points Series(XPS) races & XTERRA Cup Series (XCS) races. Competitors can enter as many events as they'd like and their best threefinishes count towards their total points score. Competitors are required to race and count points in at least one event intheir region. Note: Athletes do not have to qualify to race in the XTERRA Cup Series events.4) COUNT ‘EM UP: Points are awarded to the top 15 finishers in each age group at each race. Athletes can earn morepoints at Cup Series races because, generally, participation is higher and the courses are tougher. If an athlete races atmore than one XTERRA Cup Series event, only the best finish counts at full points. Any other finishes earn points at thesame rate as the XTERRA Points Series races. There are two points systems:

XTERRA’S COLLEGIATE DIVISION OVERVIEWHERE’S HOW IT WORKS:Any collegian with a current photo ID can race for theirschool as an individual. Athletes do not need to be amember of a school club or team. There are no age groups in the collegiate division, justmale and female categories. Collegiate racers collect points in the XTERRA AmericaTour Series but are not eligible for age group awards - theyonly race against other collegiate entries.Whenever there are three athletes from two or moreschools entered in the same race they’ll go against eachother for school pride in the college team division. Theremust be at least two schools with teams for a team award tobe presented.A “team” must consist of at least 3 male or femalemembers. There are no mixed teams. A team can havemore entrants, but less than three will not constitute a team.Points for team awards (male and female) will count thefinishing positions of the smallest number entered by aqualifying team. Example: College A has 5 men; College Bhas 7 men; College C has 9 men. Only the fastest 5finishers will count towards the team awards.Points for team awards will be calculated based on the finishing positions of the team members. The lowest total is thewinner. Example: Each team counts 3 athletes. Team A finishes 1, 8 and 15 overall for a total number 24. Team Bfinishes 5, 6 and 10 for a total number 21. Team C finishes 2, 9 and 20 for a total number of 31. Team B wins. In nocase will more than 7 athletes count towards the team awards regardless of the total number of entries by any oneteam. Should a club enter more than 7 men or women, the coach must nominate the 7 individuals he wants scored forteam awards. Other members are still eligible for individual awards, but their finishing position will not be countedtowards the team totals. Positions counted are overall positions in gender, not just collegiate entrants. This wouldinclude professional entries.Collegiate Cup: A Collegiate Cup award will be given when two or more schools have at least 3 men and 3 women per school represent-ed. Example: College A has 5 men, 2 women; College B has 7 men, 3 women. There can be no Collegiate Cup awardas there are not 2 teams that meet the overall requirements. Should two or more schools have the necessary entries, scoring will be similar to the team scoring method with all finishing positions of qualified team members added. Also:Collegiate entrants race for separate awards. Awards will be presented to the top three male and female individualcollegiate division finishers, the winning men’s and women’s teams, and the winner of the Collegiate Cup competition (ifapplicable). Pre-Registration is required for the XTERRA Collegiate Cup to be presented. Athletes competing in theCollegiate Division do not prevent XTERRA Age Group athletes from receiving XTERRA America Tour points. At the XTERRA Regional Champ races, collegians can enter the Sport distance but as an age group athlete. There isno college division in the half-distance XTERRA Sport race.Sept. 26 - XTERRA Collegiate Nationals - All college students are welcome to race for the XTERRA CollegiateNational Championship on the same course, on the same day, and at the same time as the invite-only XTERRAUSA Championship on Saturday, September 26, 2009 at Snowbasin Resort near Ogden, Utah.

2009 XTERRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Following an action-packed racing season that will span 15 countries withmore than 100 events, XTERRA will host its 14th XTERRA World Championshipin Maui on October 25th. A season-ending blow-out like no other, the WorldChampionship is the culmination of a worldwide series of races held in Saipan,Germany, New Zealand, South Africa, Italy, Brazil, Japan, Austria, UnitedKingdom, France, Mexico, Malaysia, the Czech Republic and the U.S.The race course, considered one of XTERRA's toughest and most grueling,

will consist of a 1.5-kilometer roughwater swim at Makena Beach, a grueling30- kilometer mountain bike on the slopes of Haleakala, & an 11-kilometer trailrun.Access to this legendary course is permitted once a year - on race day.Conditions change radically from year to year, diminishing the advantage torepeat competitors, and perpetuating the course's stature as among the mostintimidating in the series. The maxed-out field is limited to 600 competitors, who represent the best off-road, multisport athletes on the planet. It is a "winner take all" race, with one ofthe richest pro purses in multisport at $100,000, and it is awarded solely on thebasis of the Maui performance. Since this race is a stand-alone event, it offersa unique opportunity to competitors. Even those who have had a less thanstellar season, are given an opportunity to redeem themselves and earn thecoveted title of XTERRA World Champion. Last year Ruben Ruzafa from Spain captured the men’s championship and

Julie Dibens from the UK won the women’s crown for the second year in a row.A special prime, the Hawaiian Airlines Double, will pay $2,500 to the man andwoman with the fastest combined Hawaii Ironman and XTERRA WorldChampionship time. Only two weeks and a narrow channel of ocean separatethe two events, which each year attract a growing number of enduranceathletes. In 2008, Spain’s Eneko Llanos won the men’s double and Swiss’Sibylle Matter won the women’s double.

At the heart of XTERRA is the fundamental idea of puttingon great races in epic places with friendly faces. Prettysimple, really, but it’s a formula that has proven successfulover the years and that same philosophy is being used togrow the XTERRA Trail Run Series. Now in its fifth year as a stand-alone set of races outside

of the off-road triathlon circuit, the XTERRA Trail Run Seriesboasts 50 runs in 16 states and several countries, givingrunners the opportunity to race their way around theworldUliterally. XTERRA’s main focus is on the off-road half-marathon

distance trail run, what XTERRA calls an “Xduro”. Whenasked about the paradigm shift (XTERRA Trail Runs used tobe mostly 5km and 10km runs) Tom Kiely, CEO of XTERRA,explained that “after a decade of producing trail runs along-side our XTERRA off-road triathlons we learned that ouraudience wanted a bigger challenge than a 10k. What themarket told us was to create a series of half-marathons thathave a physical challenge parallel to that of a roadmarathon, but with Mother Nature along for the ride.”

Two big-time races, in truly stunning adventuredestinations, were added to the 2008 line up and are backin ‘09. The XTERRA Trail Running NationalChampionship returns to Bend, Oregon on September13 and the XTERRA Trail Running World Championshipis back at Kualoa Ranch on the Hawaiian Island of Oahuon December 6.Not long ago Bend was named “America’s Best Trail

Running Town” by Outside Magazine, and with its widevariety of terrain, mild fall climate, endless miles of pristinetrails and a local community full of enthusiasm and supportfor the race, runners can expect a one-of-a-kind experienceat Nationals.“The U.S. Trail Run Series is the fastest-growing segmentof XTERRA and the National Championship race is turninginto a really big deal,” said Kiely. “We think Bend is anamazing place to visit and explore, and an ideal venue forthe last race in the series.”There are several regional series in the U.S. - SoCal,

NorCal, Georgia, Virginia, Philly, South Carolina, NewEngland, and Tennessee – and each hosts between 3 and9 races through the course of the year. The winner of eachage group in each series earns free entry into the XTERRATrail Running National Championship race.In Bend the championship event is an Xduro (21km/13.1

mile), but the day-long running celebration will also featureraces of 10km and 5km distances, a festival/expo center forparticipants and spectators, K9 Challenge, and Paul

Mitchell cut-a-thon. While the race field will includecompetitors who have raced in other XTERRA events, participation is open to the general public.Following Nationals, runners can say Aloha! Held the

weekend prior to the Honolulu Marathon, the XTERRA TrailRunning World Championship will kick off the “greatestweek of running on Earth” for athletes from around theglobe. For competitive runners, $10,000 in prize money willbe awarded to the top male and female finishers and racersfrom Xduro events in South Africa, New Zealand, the CzechRepublic, Italy, and Japan are expected to come join in theadventure. The site at Kualoa Ranch on the northeastern side of Oahuis nothing short of magical. Arguably the most stunninglandscape in Hawaii, the 4,000 acre working cattle ranchhas been the setting for major motion productions such asJurassic Park, Godzilla and LOST. From the steep mountaincliffs to the sparkling sea, the terrain varies from dense rain-forest to broad open valleys and from beautiful white sandbeaches to awesome verdant cliff faces. This gathering of international trail runners is highlighted

by the 21km Xduro but is accompanied by numerous eventsranging from shorter distance trail runs and kids’ races to anadventure walk for charity and family entertainment. “XTERRA is thrilled with the growth of its Trail Running

Series” said Janet Clark, President of TEAMUnlimited/XTERRA. “XTERRA Trail Runs give runners an opportunity to

explore some wildly natural environments and challengeMother Nature’s diverse and unique offerings from roots torocks, to stream crossings and unexpected scenic vistas.”For more details visit www.xterratrailrun.com.

HOW XTERRA GOT STARTEDIT REALLY STARTED in the late '80's. That's when TomKiely (CEO of TEAM Unlimited - owners and producers ofXTERRA) was tasked with creating more publicity for theWaikiki Oahu Visitors Association. His idea was sports TV."First, sports is part of our life blood in Hawaii, and second, what looks good on TV? The beaches and the ocean,"explained Kiely.

The concept was pretty simple. TV sports andentertainment is one of the biggest industries in the world. The travel industry is THE BIGGEST industry in the world.Bring those two together in programming, and you've gotsomething big.So he came up with the idea for the Hawaiian InternationalOcean Challenge - a lifeguard skills competition thatattracted water safety specialists from Australia, NewZealand, California, and of course, Hawaii. Then, he forged a relationship with ESPN - the worldwideleader in sports. In 1990 the Ocean Challenge was broadcast on ESPN,

and millions of viewers were exposed to the beauty ofWaikiki - the sun, sand, and crystal clear blue water of thePacific Ocean. Subsequently, this is where David "Kahuna"Nicholas enters the picture - as "race director.""So we get into producing the Ocean Challenge," says

Kiely. "And now I'm thinking I've got all these athletes andTV crews and if it costs me this much to produce one show,it'll cost less for another, and even less for a third."ESPN approves two more shows (Waikiki King's Race andDiamond Head Wahine Windsurfing Classic) and in 1991TEAM Unlimited produces three events and three TVshows. The concept is working, and Hawaii is reaping thebenefits of the outdoor exposure the shows are generating."So the next year (1992) we produced seven Hawaiian

Sports Adventure ShowsUmultiple segments, differentstories, great scenics, and 30-minutes of entertaining, goodfun stuff," said Kiely. Those seven shows were in addition to the Ocean

Challenge and a few others televised events, including theinaugural Tour O' Hawaii. "Now that was a great event," said Nicholas - now the

managing director of the XTERRA Global Tour. "The TourO' Hawaii happened before professional cyclists wereallowed to compete in the Olympics so the top riders fromevery country kept their amateur status so they could racein the Olympics. We just missed Lance because he signedwith Motorola, but we had George Hincapie, Jan Ulrich,

Tyler Hamilton, and dozens of others. Looking back, thefield was a who's who of international cycling."A few years later the Olympics allowed pros to compete,

road cycling in the U.S. was on the decline, and the Tour O'Hawaii was no more. At the same time, however, mountainbiking was taking off. So in 1995, in addition to 12 other TVshows and several events, TEAM Unlimited produced theHawaiian Mountain Tour.In doing so Nicholas and mountain bike Hall-of-Famer

Dean Crandall established the rules and held the first-evermountain bike stage race. This is also where many of theXTERRA greats first appeared. The likes of Ned Overend,Shari Kain, Melanie McQuaid, Steve Larsen, Mike Kloser,Leslie Tomlinson, and host of others were taking part in theHawaiian Mountain Tour. Now these races took place atKualoa Ranch on Oahu, where the Koolau mountain rangemeets the ocean, and the story goes that after their racesthe mountain bikers would ride down to the beach and jumpin the water. It sparked a thoughtUwhy not have amountain bike triathlon? By 1996 TEAM Unlimited had produced more than 50

shows and sporting events, and while the idea of an off-roadtriathlon was enticing - who'd pay for it? Almost simultaneously, the Aston Hotel in Maui (now the

Wailea Marriott Resort) was shopping for a good idea fortheir grand opening and the Maui Visitors Bureau waslooking for a new event that could tell a different story aboutMaui's south shore because all the exposure up to that pointwas golf. Well, what better way to show off the hotel andsouth shore than 1) starting the race at this beautiful beachin front of the sponsor hotel, 2) follow a race that covers 21miles of terrain with two dozen camera's, and 3) put it on TVfor the whole world to see?Add a phone call to Kiely from a friendly competitor in themarketplace (to remain unnamed) inquiring on the verysubject of producing an off-road triathlon and you have allthe main ingredients for XTERRA's birth.

Kiely likes to define luck as the "intersection ofopportunity and activity." He recalls bringing Nicholas andVP of Marketing Janet Clark into his office. "Look, I said, so-and-so called me and said that they werethinking about doing an off-road tri and if they do, then we'reforever second, so we have to be the first ones to do it. Iimmediately called Aston and the MVB and said O.K., I'vegot the idea, here's the thing, bing, bang, boom," said Kiely.

"And that's what got us started in XTERRA."

THE XTERRA PLANET

Lightweight XTERRA Shoes Designed to Help AthletesStalk Their On-Course Prey

TJ Gray and Ashley Brown — designers of XTERRA’s newline of footwear and apparel — stood at the finish line of theXTERRA World Championship in Maui in October 2008.While many of the competitors lay in bed the night beforecounting sheep in anticipation of the race, that afternoonGray and Brown were counting shoes.Road shoe, road shoe, road shoe. As athletes poured

down from the lower slopes of Mount Haleakala from theirnearly seven-mile trail run over roots, rocks and ravines,Gray and Brown couldn’t believe their eyes. “Maybe one in 100 was a trail runner,” said Brown, who

along with partner Gray have also developed shoes forNike, adidas and Salomon. “They were all sacrificing sta-bility for less weight.”They returned to the drawing board, determined to make

XTERRA the lightest — but still, most stable — trail runningshoe on the market. With four months until the launch of theshoes at the Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City, designs were tweaked, materials tested — including aunique combination of lighter blown rubber in the forefootand a heavier high-abrasion carbon rubber in the heel. But their biggest scientific sport discovery was yet to come. After much trial and error in their New Hampshire lab, amolding model never before seen in the category wascreated. Gone was a traditional glued-together midsole, replaced by a dual-injected, dual-density EVA made of twolayers — the top soft, the bottom harder — giving comfortand stability while taking away weight. The result: an eco-friendly design that’s one of the lightesttrail runners ever, weighing in at less than 10.5 ounces formen, 9.5 for women. With the weight issue solved, multi-sport competitors Grayand Brown began to research every movement taken on atrail — the footplant and lateral pushoff around a 90-degreedirectional path change, the flexed-footed jump over water, the balanced gripped-toe run across a log. As they were going for a timed run in the woods near theirstudios — furiously passing each other, taking turns as thelead — the big-picture design inspiration for XTERRA’s newfootwear line came: a big-cat predator’s paw.“Chasing its prey, a big cat grips into the earth — digginginto loose gravel, dirt, gaining time and distance on every

step, every leap,” said Gray, a former collegiate decathleteat Syracuse. “The outer part of their foot acts like a traction pad,” he

continued. “It’s from there that we came up with XTERRA’sunique outsole lug concept.”The concept’s name: WILDTred. According to Gray and

Brown, its carved claw-like perimeter lug design formsindependent touch pads from forefoot to heel with deep flexzones for controlled, wrap-around grip. They also noted thelugs are higher than the shoe bottom’s concave center, helping it act as its front and rear suspension while creatinga larger surface area.“With the cat’s paw, we liked the symbolism of man’s

co-existence with all things found in the environment, saidBrown. “We adapt to our surroundings, whether it beanimal, plant or any of nature’s elements. Continued Brown: “The thought behind XTERRA’s new lineis that the outdoors are no longer to be conquered; they’reto be connected with.”XTERRA’s footwear launch includes five styles: trail

runner, trail trainer, ultra trainer, performance sandal, andperformance slide. For more information on the product — or what retailers
