The E’s

Explain, explain, explain. The E’s are the meat – the substance of

expository writing. “Nothing is more important than the

quantity and quality of the explanations you include in your writing. You can have a wonderful topic sentence and choose the best transitions, but if you don’t support the topic, the paper will fail.”

Maureen AumanAuthor of Step Up to Writing

Thesis/Intro Paragraph

A Little More… A Lot More… During the 1960’s, a movement began in the South that came to be known as the civil rights movement. While it began below the Mason-Dixon line, the effects of this movement rippled throughout the United States. Although many individuals are famous for their efforts during these years, “hero” is a title only a few deserve. Thurgood Marshall, Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Ernest Green are courageous Americans who qualify for that very high honor.

My grandmother always had a lot of stories to share, but one I vividly remember involved an incident that occurred in 1955 when she was about seven years old. Visiting an aunt in Atlanta for summer vacation opened her eyes to what life in the South was like if your were African American. She saw that the color on one’s skin could make a difference in where you could or could not eat, get a drink of water, or swim. She always concluded this story by saying that things are different now because of the acts of bravery –some small, some large – done by everyday people like us. Although many individuals are famous for their efforts during these years, “hero” is a title only a few deserve. Thurgood Marshall, Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Ernest Green are courageous Americans who qualify for that very high honor.
