THE YTL SCHOLAR Your academic degree matters to us, but we believe it takes much more than an academic qualification alone to shape young, caring and passionate leaders. This is why YTL Foundation will invest in you during your course of study and beyond. We will provide you with training, internships, mentoring and access to a global community of scholars to complement your education, build your confidence and prepare you for the workplace.

A GLOBAL COMMUNITY YTL Foundation aims to build a strong community of scholars who work as a collective force to make a dierence. We create opportunities for you to make new friends with your peers. This community starts as soon as you are accepted into the programme. You will take part in an induction programme to get to know YTL and other scholars in a fun and welcoming environment.

THE LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME

You will be coached over the course of your academic career to continue in your personal development with the goal of helping you realise your full potential.

BUILD YOUR SKILLS Our scholars gain unique, interactive experiences aimed at supporting their personal growth in skills which are vital to success in the workplace. The opportunity to participate in the innovative and creative programmes that YTL Foundation and the YTL Group run in primary and secondary schools will also provide you with skill sets that will help support your personal growth.

HANDS ON EXPERIENCE

The best way to learn is through hands on experience, which is why we create internships for our scholars within the YTL Group each year. Your internship will give you a clearer idea of the YTL work culture and what it is like to work for a company running a diversified global business.

scholars who have the potential to become

outstanding citizens and have a high

commitment to the community. The

selection of candidates is based on a

achievement, leadership qualities,

involvement in community and

non-curricular activities. But most

importantly we are looking for smart, gritty

young people who embody our core values.

Scholarships are awarded annually to

successful candidates to enable them to

attend reputable and recognized colleges or

universities in the country and exceptionally

overseas.

What happened when you first found out that

you had gotten the scholarship

I remember my dad yelling to my mother when I

got my scholarship, “Mother, where would you

like to go for a holiday?!”

What dierence has the scholarship made to

you and your family’s life?

Financial stability is nice. It’s good to know I will

graduate without a debt.

What does the future hold for you?

Limitless possibilities!

What would you say to someone else thinking

of applying for a scholarship?

Understand the values and constraints the

scholarship provides. Don’t make decisions based

on ideal, it may sound cliché, but fulfilling

passions come first.

ALLAN TAN GAR HENGScholar

Allan is studying Mechanical Engineering at Universiti Tenaga Malaysia.

Page 8: THE YTL SCHOLAR

David successfully graduated with a degree

in Mechanical Engineering in 2011 and 6 years on,

he works as a Senior Project Engineer in the

M&E Department of YTL Construction.

What dierence has the YTL Scholarship made to your life?

Having the opportunity to further my studies has allowed me to

be more independent and broadened my views on the world.

What opportunities have you had since working at YTL?

The most interesting thing about working in YTL for me is that I

have been fortunate to work on various types of projects thus

far and every project is unique and challenging in its own way.

Currently we are building the new YTL HQ Towers in Bukit

Bintang; I am excited and thankful to be working on the

next new landmark of KL’s skyline.

What would you say to someone thinking

about applying for a YTL Scholarship?

“If a window of opportunity appears,

don’t pull down the shade.” - Tom Peters

DAVID PRINCEAlumni working in YTL

Caryl is our first Yeoh Tiong Lay Scholar, who

started studying law at the University of

Cambridge in 2015.

What was your experience of applying for a

scholarship?

The process was a lot less formal than other

scholarship applications and more personal. I felt

relaxed, and could tell that being a YTL Scholar is

dierent than being a scholar for another company.

You meet interesting people and it feels more like a

family.

What dierence has the Yeoh Tiong Lay

Scholarship made to your life?

This whole chapter of my life! I wouldn’t have been

able to come to Cambridge and study here without

the scholarship. YTL wants to make a dierence in

their scholars’ lives, to help them grow and

develop, and my family are happy I’m

getting the extra support.

What does the future hold for you?

I hope to continue picking up dierent skills, and

I’m looking forward to seeing the reality of working

for the company whether at YTL Foundation, Frog

Asia or the Legal Department.

What would you say to someone else thinking of

applying for a scholarship?

Go for it! You don’t have anything to lose, and even

if you aren’t successful you will gain experience

and new skills in a professional environment.

You never know, God may open the door!

You’ll never know unless you try.
