Stepping Up to Help Us Grow Seven years ago, I could not have imagined our growth. I remember the first High Holyday message I gave to the community about needing a Shabbat community for my daughter and since then the synagogue has not looked back. This year we saw new highs. Our Annual Celebrity Fundraiser with Aaron Sorkin and Rob Reiner was spectacular at the O’Shaughnessy. Crossriver Kosherfest at Keg and Case exceeded expectations (and was delicious). The Big Night of Jewish Thought was thought-provoking and a new focal point for our programming. Our Visions Speaker Series was tremendous. Our school now sees weekly visitors to try us out. And our 5 Senses program for children and parents has been recognized nationally. There is so much to be proud of.

The stabilizing force behind all of this success has been our lay leaders. The Presidents I have worked with, Mike Saxon, Judy Werthauser, Rosalyn Segal, Gary Portnoy and Steve Kafitz, have been true supporters of ideas and important truth-tellers when

we have missed a mark. Their time and dedication have launched this incredible synagogue into the 21st century. And as their leadership blossomed so have ideas generated by all of you. Eli Temkin’s downtown lunch and learn, the efforts of Mary Lerman and volunteers with our Gardens, Susan Tervola and Susan Gonzalez’s help at CRKF and BNJT, Alisha Simon and David Goldman’s planning of Superhero Purim and more! On behalf of the Temple of Aaron staff, I thank you all.

Of course, much of the work happens behind the scenes. Bill Jorke, Todd Schmidt, T.J. Jones, Murray Weiss, and Justin Jorke have been vital to ensuring setups and programming have what is needed for the programming team to do its work. Svetlana, Vlad and their crew have enhanced our Kiddish lunches, shiva meals, holiday dinners and more. Larry Eisenstadt and Tom Bartsch were vital to our ritual success from minyan to music, they play crucial roles in our community’s success. We thank them for their incredible dedication and efforts.

Susie Haim is one of the best people I know. She is the person who keeps us smiling and anchors much of our synagogue’s needs. Thank you, Susie!

Kim Thomey is my 8am buddy in the office. Her consistency, friendliness and warmth add to our daily activity and strength. Thank you, Kim!

Jorie Bernhardt has brought a new level of creativity to our organization. She is relentless in pushing the envelope and forcing us to think differently. She cares deeply about our growth and inclusivity. Thank you, Jorie!

Danae Thorpe is my right-hand! She is the absolute best and I could not do my job without her. We work seamlessly together and have grown as a unit. I am always grateful for her ability to strengthen this synagogue and grow as a person. Thank you, Danae!

Cantor/Educator Joshua Fineblum continues to improve services, our music and school. Josh is a strong advocate for the Temple of Aaron. His ability to be open to creative ways to educate and tefillah as a spiritual mechanism has made us a better synagogue. Thank you, Cantor Fineblum!

Rabbi Micah Miller has added so much to our organization. In his first short year he has been able to elevate our Adult Education, especially our TAXY Talks and Vision Speakers, and he is pushing himself to be more involved in our growing community. He is a true partner and I am grateful he is with us. Thank you, Rabbi Miller.

And last but not least, our incomparable Executive Director Ken Agranoff is the best; no other way to describe it. My work is more rewarding because Ken is in my life. Our working relationship and friendship mean a great deal to me. Not to mention he has great seats to Gopher basketball games! Thank you, Ken!

As you can see it takes a village and I happen to be lucky enough to be a part of a very special one. I hope to see you all on June 5 for Crossriver Block Party 2.0 and August 25 for our 7th Annual Celebrity Fundraiser with Rachel Brosnahan and Kevin Pollak for a MARVELOUS afternoon.

See you in shul! Rabbi Jeremy Fine

Ben Zoma said: “Who is wise? One who learns from all, as it is written, ‘I have learned from all my teachers.’” (Psalms 119:99) This teaching comes from Mishnah Pirkei Avot, Ethics of our Fathers, and is perhaps one of the more well-known rabbinic teachings concerning education. I love this quote because it highlights that in Judaism every single person has the ability to educate others. They do not necessarily have to hold a master’s degree in education, a rabbinic degree, or possess a Ph.D. I mention this teaching because the holiday of Shavuot is this month and there is a long-standing custom of how to celebrate. Traditionally, Jews across the world stay up and study Torah all through the night until we have reached the time of the morning prayers. The tradition was established as a way for us to prepare us for the “receiving” of the Torah again on Shavuot. I have fond memories of this holiday because every single year my family would host the learning at our home. The night was filled with beautiful insights to our Torah and tradition and a dairy feast at midnight that my mother would work so incredibly hard on preparing. To be honest, that is where a lot of my warmhearted feelings come from. That was until I was asked by my father if I wanted to teach. I should rephrase that; it was until I finally took him up on the offer to teach. He would ask me year after year, but I always said no. Until one time in college I actually felt confident enough to offer a shiur, or lesson. I remember the joy that I got from this experience. This was mostly because I received so many poignant and astute questions and remarks that pushed me to expand my understanding of my own topic. I have come to learn that is why I love to teach. The words that I have to offer are but the beginning of the teaching that occurs in the classroom from all in attendance. We all are students and teachers at the same time. This year we are lucky to have members from our congregation who wanted to share their homes and their Torah by teaching for our Shavuot Celebration – ToA Learns Across the Twin Cities on June 8th. I hope that each of you will come out to a session and honor this holiday of Shavuot with your thoughts and insights about our tradition. Kol Tuv, Rabbi Miller

Shavuot Special Notes Shavuot starts Saturday night June 8, 2019. History tells us Moses encountered G-d on Mount Sinai and wrote down what he was told. The Torah was presented to the Jewish people in 1289 B.C.E. Moses was a good teacher and prophet and it is in te r es t ing to recognize the Torah is often called the 5 Books of Moses. The Torah is one vital part of our Bible. The other two parts are Prophets and Holy Writings. The Torah is both our most sacred object and the most sacred text.

Historians say the Torah’s purpose is to provide instructions for finding and following the path of G-d and the path to G-d. The words in the Torah contain 304,805 letters and some ancient sages taught that all wisdom in the universe is hidden within these letters.

We will have a June 9 Sunday morning service that begins at 9:00 a.m. and concludes with the annual blintz bletter which is endowed in memory of Edward & Esther Tilsen. We will have the final Shavuot Service on Monday, June 10 beginning at 9:00 am, includes Yizkor and is followed by light sweets/fruit endowed by the David A. Berg Family.

Blessed by Your Generosity

We at Temple of Aaron are blessed to be able to bring in amazing speakers to share their stories and their Torah with our community. Our Visions Speaker Series is one of the highlights of our Shabbat Holy Playground.

This year alone we have learned from Andrew Luger, former U.S. Attorney for Minnesota; Arno Michaelis, a reformed white supremacist; Dr. Jonathan Schanzer, an expert on the Middle East and Israel; and most recently, Dr. Avivah Zornberg, a world-renowned biblical scholar.

The only reason that we are able to bring in such quality speakers is because individuals within our community see the value in having them share their lessons with us. Particularly, with Dr. Zornberg we were only able to bring her in with the generous help of Norene Karon through her vision to elevate the quality of these guests.

We as an entire community wanted to express our thanks and gratitude for your help and allowing us to thrive as a Beit Midrash, a spiritual house filled with learning.

For the third year in a row we held our Family Kallah and this year we SOLD OUT! Over 110 individuals attended this year’s event, compared to 78 last year. It was so wonderful to be together and spend shabbat at Herzl Camp in Webster, WI. The weekend was filled with so many meaningful and fun activities for adults and kids alike.

Not only did we have a good amount of people attend the event but we had some of our members/attendees work on all of programming from youth programming, adult social programming, and adult and family religious programming. Thank you so much to Aaron Bernhardt, Allie and Mark Divine, Haley and Oliver Lerner, Miriam Muscoplat, Alisha Simon, and Jamie Wynn-Bell in assisting our professional staff and paid youth staff in creating and facilitating some dynamic and thought provoking programming throughout our time together. It is so vital to our organization and to this event to continue to have our members step up and

volunteers their time to continue to improve our programming year after year.

This year on shabbat we tried some insightful and interactive services. On Friday night we did a Kehillat Shabbat service, like the ones we have done this year at home. During this Friday service we had people think about their own blessings in their lives by looking at the blessings of the Friday night service. People shared openly and it was nice to have that conversation together. On shabbat morning we did a similar style service with spirituality and niggunim as the main focus of the service.

Throughout the weekend it was great to see so many of our participants meet new people, play sports and game together, have meaningful conversations with Rabbi Fine about Anti-Semitism, and with each other about Judaism, Temple of Aaron, and more. Rabbi Miller and I loved eating strange foods as part of our Saturday evening adult fun and the kids played together so well over the weekend.

Thank you to our L’dor VaDor Grandparent Endowment and private donors who assisted in keeping the cost of the weekend down. This three year program has grown each year and we look forward to seeing it continue to in the year to come.

If you missed out this year, please mark your calendars now for next year’s Kallah to take place from May 1-3, 2020. We have already begun the planning process and hope to have an even bigger turnout and more people involved in the planning for this coming year. Look for the early-bird sign up in November to save your spot for this amazing shabbat together.

Shavuot, the holiday in which we celebrate receiving the Torah, and my birthday have always had a special connection. I was born on the 29th of Iyar, with the Jewish holiday celebrated several days later. Some years my English Birthday and Shavuot line-up, with this year being a day apart. On Shavuot, it is customary to eat dairy. What could be better than a birthday celebrated with cheese, dairy, and cheesecake? Ah yes, add a Bat Mitzvah and the Book of Ruth to the mix.

On Sunday, June 13, 1999, I stood at the Bimah at my childhood synagogue and recited from the Book of Ruth. This traditional reading for Shavuot highlights the loyalty and strength of Ruth, a woman who went on to be the matrilineal heritage of King David, transcend the deaths of her father, husband, assert her faith, all while she stuck to her morals and values in a patriarchal society. Ruth is heralded as a Jewish feminist hero, but yet, here I was as I completed my Bat Mitzvah without reading from the Torah or leading a service. This was the world I was raised in and thought that I fit in. However, as I’ve aged and asserted my own identity, I recognize the irony in the situation.

Biblical Ruth was a champion for Naomi, a woman whom she had no relation to other than the bounds of marriage. Despite that, Ruth’s kindness never faded. If we look to modern times, many would say that Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a champion and hero in her own right. The modern Ruth has fought for justice and equality, that women should not be treated differently because of their gender. Ginsburg’s formation of the Women’s Right Project as part of the ACLU in 1972 propelled her legal career, and in 1993 she became the second woman and first Jewish woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court.

As an adult and especially as an educator, who has recognized the injustices, inequalities, and divisiveness in our world, I want to be an example and role model for my students. How can I use Ruth and other Jewish feminist heroes, like Ruth Bader Ginsburg, as my example to champion inclusion in education? In the wake of social action movements, modern age feminism, and the ubiquity of social media and technology, it offers us the moment to think about the simple question “what do we owe to each other?” How do our identities, frameworks, values, morals, and ethics dictate and guide our actions in society? In which moments are we apt to be an upstander for the “other,” and in which moments will we remain silent? What is our moral responsibility to each other, to those who wrong us, and to those we ourselves have wronged?

Join in the Social Justice Learning Process How are immigration enforcement and criminal justice connected? What do our Jewish values and experience have to say about how we treat those who might be seen as the “other” or the “stranger?” What are the root causes of the challenges we see today? What are local governments doing to make the Twin Cities safe and welcoming for all who call it home, and how can we work with them to do even more? The Temple of Aaron Social Justice committee, in alliance with Jewish Community Action, is hosting a learning circle for Temple of Aaron members to examine our criminal justice and immigration enforcement systems and develop a values-driven vision for community safety. There will be six sessions, spanning a two to three month period. For more information and to sign up for the program, please contact Brian Zaidman at [email protected].

Coming Home – It’s Your Legacy – Shape the Future

I recently arrived home on a Sunday from a wonderful winter in Florida. There is a lot involved in coming home — unpacking, laundry and shopping. After a few days most of those chores were done, but I was still feeling unsettled. Yesterday was Shabbat and I went to shul, as I usually do. I was welcomed by the “regulars” and I enjoyed participating in the service. When I returned home I realized that was what had been missing — going to shul was the final piece of coming home. I am not without many choices of synagogues in Florida, and I enjoy visiting several of them, but they are not “my” shul.

For the last 22 years, Temple of Aaron has been my home shul. It welcomed me and my husband when we moved here, we were honored to serve on the Board for many years and it comforted me as I mourned his loss. That is only part of the reason why I agreed to serve as co-chair for the It’s Your Legacy initiative. I have often volunteered for organizations that raise money for the Jewish community. But this is the first time I really had to consider a gift that would help ensure that my shul would exist after I am no longer here.

Many of you have multi-generational roots here at Temple of Aaron. You, and we all, benefit from the planning of your families. I enjoy seeing several generations of families worshipping and participating in programs together. Even though I don’t have children and grandchildren in this community, I want to make sure that this synagogue continues to thrive for generations to follow. This is our responsibility. We need to provide for the future of our Jewish communal organizations. As we are always threatened, we need to assure our continuity. No one else will do it for us.

This Legacy initiative has been a pleasure to participate in. I have had an opportunity to speak with many of you and I have been heartened by your receptiveness. But we are not done. We continue to need more donors to pledge a gift, either in their will, or via insurance or other beneficiary. For those of you who have committed, now is the time when we need you to act on your wishes. It is time to finalize the arrangements to make sure your Letter of Intent becomes an action plan. I can tell you, it feels good to have those final arrangements completed.

Let it feel good for you too. Allow yourself the satisfaction of knowing you have done your part to keep this shul vital and alive after you are gone. Let it be here for your children and grandchildren to come home to.

Call me, Roz Segal, Nancy Lane, Bart Schneider, Roxanne Portnoy, Rabbi Jeremy Fine or Executive Director Ken Agranoff and we will be happy to help you put your wishes into action.
