Theatre Charlotte
In the little village of Anatevka, Tevye, a poor dairyman, tries to instill in his five daughters the traditions of his tight-knit Jewish community in the face of changing social mores and the growing anti-Semitism of Czarist Russia. Rich in historical and ethnic detail, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF has touched audiences around the world with its humor, warmth and honesty. The universal theme of tradition cuts across barriers of race, class, nationality and religion. The score features timeless classics such as “Tradition,” “If I Were a Rich Man,” and “Sunrise, Sunset.”
Based on the award-winning book that inspired the Oscar-winning film and the Emmy-winning television series. It’s 1962. A hot August night lies heavy over the small town of Argo, Alabama. A dead white man is discovered and the local police arrest a black stranger named Virgil Tibbs. The police discover that their prime suspect is in fact a homicide detective from California. As it happens, Tibbs becomes the racially-tense community’s single hope in solving a brutal murder that is turning up no witnesses, no motives and no clues.

agesTheatre Charlotte’s holiday tradition is back for the sixth consecutive year! This version captures the magic and mystique of the Dickens original. At the opening, Charles Dickens is presenting a reading of his popular “A Christmas Carol.” As he begins, the story unfolds on stage around him: the classic tale of hard-hearted Ebenezer Scrooge who is visited by the ghost of his late partner, Jacob Marley and the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. These spirits gradually warm old Scrooge’s heart, as well as ours.
What does a shy Englishman in search of rest do when he visits a fishing lodge in Georgia? In Larry Shue’s hilarious farce, Charlie Baker, a proof reader by day and a boring husband by night, adopts the persona of a foreigner who doesn’t understand English. When others begin to speak freely around him, he not only becomes privy to secrets both dangerous and frivolous, he also discovers an adventurous extrovert within himself.

A dark comedy, it portrays husband and wife George and Martha in a searing night of dangerous fun and games. By the evening’s end, a stunning revelation provides a climax that has shocked audiences for years. With the play’s razor-sharp dialogue and the stripping away of social pretense, Newsweek keenly foresaw WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? as “a brilliantly original work of art ̶ an excoriating theatrical experience, surging with shocks of recognition and dramatic fire that will be igniting Broadway for some time to come.”
Winner of the Tony Award’s Triple Crown for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book, AVENUE Q is part puppet, part human and packed with heart. It is a laugh-out-loud musical that tells the timeless story of a recent college graduate named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that although the residents seem nice, it’s clear that this is not your ordinary neighborhood. Together, Princeton and his new-found friends struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.

Theatre Charlotte’s Murder Mystery Dinner Party series is our most popular special event! Guests, or “investigators”, listen to alibis, question the suspects, and collect clues to try to figure out “whodunit” in a murder mystery featuring Theatre Charlotte’s top performers. During the detective work, guests will enjoy a three-course dinner and browse selections in the silent auction including vacation packages, dinner experiences, and upcoming event tickets. The 2012-2013 season will feature two murder mystery events, Dinner and a Murder will take place in the Fall and our 5th annual Wine, Chocolate, and Murder will create a romantic Valentine’s date.

VOLUNTEERS The success of every Theatre Charlotte production depends on the time and talents of people just like you. Our volunteers are performing onstage, working backstage, selling refreshments, and seeing you to your seat. We could not do it without you!
There are many ways to get involved. Sign up on our website at www.theatrecharlotte.org/volunteering.asp and you will receive our monthly volunteer newsletter which will tell you about upcoming volunteer opportunities. Join us for a volunteer workday, usually held a couple of weeks before the opening of each show, and work on set construction, painting, props, and facility improvements. If you’ve always wanted to be on stage, check the audition schedule on our website.
We also need volunteers during performances to sell concessions, usher, and provide box office support. Scheduling of Front-of-House volunteers is handled through our partnership with Hands On Charlotte. If you are interested in ushering or selling concessions for our shows, please go to www.handsoncharlotte.org, search for Theatre Charlotte on the Volunteer Opportunity calendar, and follow the directions to register and sign up.
With more than 500 volunteers needed each season, there is something for every interest. No experience is necessary!

Support Theatre CharlotteAs a non-profit community theatre, Theatre Charlotte relies on the generosity of our patrons to help fund our productions and programs. Ticket sales account for only 50% of our operating expenses. The remainder of our funding comes from the Arts and Science Council, corporations and foundations, as well as individual donations. Please consider supporting Theatre Charlotte by making a donation to our Annual Fund Campaign. A gift of any size makes a difference. For example a $100 donation will purchase volunteer meals for one production. A $250 donation will purchase all the props needed for one production or send a class of 20 underserved students to the theatre. A $500 donation will cover the cost of royalties and script rental for one performance of a musical production. Please support Theatre Charlotte at one of these levels or at a level that is most appropriate for you.

Changing Lives for 85 Years and Counting
Theatre has the power to change lives, and Theatre Charlotte has been changing lives for 85 years! Founded in 1927 as The Charlotte Drama League, Theatre Charlotte is the oldest cultural institution in Charlotte and the oldest continuously producing community theatre in NC. Theatre Charlotte is a volunteer-based community theatre dedicated to creating outstanding theatre opportunities relevant to the people of the Charlotte region. We are committed to making theatre relevant in the lives of more people by demonstrating that theatre engages, inspires and unites communities. Theatre Charlotte, formerly the Little Theatre of Charlotte, has been housed at 501 Queens Road, located in the heart of the historic Myers Park district of Charlotte since 1941. The first production in this facility was “George Washington Slept Here” by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman. That show closed on Saturday, December 6, 1941 and the next morning the United States was plunged into WWII by the attack on Pearl Harbor. But, the Theatre continued to operate, a much needed diversion during the war. During hard times and good times, Theatre Charlotte has produced a season of plays and musicals every year since 1927. Our 85-year history has included over 450 main stage productions, seen by over half a million theatre-goers and utilizing the services of thousands of volunteers onstage, backstage and front of house. We are proud of our heritage and excited about our future!
