BLWIT:Layout 1 5/24/12 5:07 PM Page A

Howdy, y’all, and welcome to The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas! Glad y’all could join us!

We’re very happy to present this show for Houston audiences since it has such a connection to the city. The show began here in town, toured the world, held Las Vegas at bay for two years, and ended up with a slew of Tony Awards and Drama Desk Awards once it finally hit Broadway. Adding to the Texas history, the show is based on a brothel in La Grange, TX and features a character based on Houston’s own late television news reporter – Marvin Zindler.

To add to the charm of the show, we’ve gone a step further to bring back the talents of Roger Allan Raby, who directed the show while it was in Las Vegas, and Angie Wheeler, who choreographed both the first national tour and Las Vegas stay of the show. With their involvement in both the original show and this current production, we hope the audience will capture the magic of the original production.

On a more personal note, I want to use this opportunity to mention two TUTS team members to whom this show is dedicated: Carole Hanna McCann and Art Yelton. They were both heavily involved in our Humphreys School of Musical Theatre, and their skills helped shape the musical theatre training and education of countless students over the years. Though they both passed away within the last year, their work still lives on in the students, past and present, who have benefitted from their work with our school. Carole and Art, thank you for everything that you have given to us and our students.

In celebration of Carole’s and Art’s legacy, I hope that you all enjoy the show! And come back soon, ya hear?!

In 1905, Miss Jesse Williams (Miss Wulla Jean) built a farmhouse on a plot of land with the purpose of establishing a whorehouse about one mile outside LaGrange, TX. It thrived by establishing good relations withlaw enforcement and the community. Edna Milton (MissMona) came to work for Miss Wulla Jean in 1952 and three months later she was the manager. In 1962 Milton bought the place from Williams as she was in failing health. Suspicion is that Sheriff T. J. Flournoy (Ed EarlDodd) gave her the money to buy it, and she paid himback many times over during its existence. They were business partners, with no romantic entanglement.

By the 1960s it had achieved its maximum number of working girls (16) by continuing to add rooms, each with its own bed, ceiling fan and air conditioner. Over a single two day period, the number of customers counted entering and leaving the house was 454. The estimated earnings in a one year period was between $500,000 to $750,000 with the girls earning 25% and the house keeping the rest. This cozy arrangement lasted until August 1973 when Marvin Zindler (Melvin P. Thorpe), aHouston TV reporter, did an exposé and the Chicken

Ranch was closed down for good. In September 1977 the Chicken Ranch was sold to a group of Dallas lawyers who turned it into a restaurant. In September 1978 the restaurant closed and the building and all the furnishings were auctioned off.

Marvin Zindler was born Aug. 1, 1921 in Houston. He joined KTRK-TV on January 1, 1973, and in September 1988 was signed to an unprecedented lifetime contract with Capital Cities Corporation/ABC-TV. He became the “voice of the people” and his office answered every complaint written to him (over 100,000 yearly). The biggest story he ever covered was the exposure and shutting down of the Chicken Ranch. The ensuing attack by Sheriff Flournoy, sent him to the hospital, and made him a national figure. He died on July 29, 2007 from pancreatic cancer.

Sheriff T. J. (Jim) Flournoy was elected Sheriff of Fayette County in 1946. In 1952 he had a direct phone line installed to the Chicken Ranch from his office in La Grange in orderto keep tabs on the happenings there. He never felt there was anything wrong in allowingthe house to operate in his county. In fact, he made several important arrests of criminals who showed up when Edna or the girls called the Sheriff to let him know. He was a nightmare vision of a gun-toting County Sheriff: a pot-bellied, slow-talking, slow thinkinghulking incarnation of frontier justice. Big Jim’s idea of dealing with the world was based largely on threats. When he attacked Marvin, he tore the film out of his camera, broke 2 of

his ribs, and sent him to the hospital. In 1980 he retired as Sheriff of Fayette County because of all thenegative publicity he received for closing the Chicken Ranch. He died in October of 1982.

Edna Milton ran The Chicken Ranch from 1962-1973. She was hard-nosed with a spineof steel and a heart of gold. When the Chicken Ranch was closed she moved to East Texas and married a restaurant owner. When the Chicken Ranch Restaurant opened in Dallas she was hired as its hostess. In June of 1978 she was hired as a consultant to the Broadwaymusical The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and played the role of Miss Wulla Jean. Edna Milton Chadwell died in Phoenix in February 2012 following several months of hospitalization due to an auto accident.

The Chicken Ranch circa 1960

Performances of The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas are made possible through the generous support of the following sponsors:

St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System, Season Sponsor (see page 7 for salute)

Premier Sponsor: The Humphreys Foundation

Theatre Under The Stars is funded in part by grants from the City of Houston through the Miller Theatre Advisory Board and the Theater District, and the Texas Commission on the Arts.

Silver Eagle Distributors is pleased to partner

with Theatre Under The Stars as a sponsor of

the iconic musical favorite, The Best Little

Whorehouse in Texas. With more than 1,200 employees in 16 Texas counties that

include the metropolitan areas of Houston and San Antonio, Silver Eagle is the

nation’s largest distributor of Anheuser-Busch products and one of the largest Grupo

Modelo distributors in the country. Silver Eagle works collectively with Anheuser-

Busch and local partners to proactively develop and implement close to 30

community-based alcohol awareness and education programs throughout its territory.

An avid supporter of numerous non-profit organizations and charitable causes, Silver

Eagle Distributors is a valued corporate member of the communities it serves.

Texas Size VIP Experience Sponsor: Silver Eagle Distributors

P E R F O R M A N C E P A R T N E R S

In 1957, in the small Texas town of Liberty, a Texas non-profit foundation was

formed which has become a leader in supporting Texas cultural and educational

activities. The Humphreys Foundation of Liberty, Texas was established by the

generosity of its founder and benefactor, the late Geraldine Davis Humphreys. Over

the years, the Foundation has been an especially generous contributor to many

Houston performing arts organizations, including Theatre Under The Stars, the Alley

Theatre, the Houston Grand Opera, the Society for the Performing Arts, the Houston

Ballet and the Houston Symphony. The Foundation has generously supported TUTS

since its founding, including the establishment of The Humphreys School of Musical

Theatre, TUTS’ training wing.

Today, under the leadership of Linda Bertman and the other trustees, Louis B. Paine

and Robert B. Wall, The Humphreys Foundation continues its distinguished tradition

of philanthropy. Theatre Under The Stars is proud of its long relationship and is

honored to salute the outstanding contributions of The Humphreys Foundation.
