“I realized not only was I surrounded by my family of Aggies ... I was surround-ed by the entire Aggie family,” he said. “That was so incredibly powerful — just knowing that is very comforting.”

During the Roll Call for the Ab-sent, comrades will answer “here” to represent each of the 120 Aggies who have died since the last Muster roll call in 2012.

Bryce Buchmann, senior political sci-ence major whose father is Class of 1984, said some of his first words were attempts at “gig ‘em.” But, despite the traditions his father spoon-fed him at an early age, Buchmann said he latched onto the tradi-tion of saying “here” at Muster last year.

“Last year was my first year to go to Muster, but I’m not going to miss it ever again,” Buchmann said.

Muster is called worldwide, but the largest Muster ceremony is held on the

Texas A&M University campus.The March 1923 edition of Texas Aggie

said, “If there is an A&M man in one-hundred miles of you, you are expected to get together, eat a little and live over the days you spent at the A&M College of Texas.”

Muster will be held at 325 lo-cations this year, including at least 40 abroad.

“[Muster] takes place in tents and fox-holes, on cruise ships, at brew pubs and everywhere in between,” said Scott Jar-vis, coordinator of A&M Club Programs. “It’s the one time a year when Aggies take pause no matter where they are to reflect on what it means to be a part of the Aggie Family, swap Aggie stories with maybe a close friend, maybe someone they’ve never met before and honor those who have passed on.”

Mark Heath, Class of 1989, said he started going to Muster when he was a student and has kept the tradition after graduation. He said the most memorable muster he participated in took place in a military dining facility when he was working for an engineering company in

Afghanistan.Heath said each time he has attended

a muster, different people and activities surrounded the roll call, such as a Texas A&M flag signing.

“It was great getting together with Ags,” Heath said. “It was great to meet new people and find out what they did. Most were in the military ser-vice, although some were civilians like me. We shared some stories and we had muster.”

Frank Pye, former Ross Volunteer and Class of 1984, said he will never forget the first time he called out “here” for a fellow Aggie. He said Muster has been a part of his life since he was a student and has car-ried with him through his time in service at Fort Sill, Okla. He hopes to pass down to his son, Adam, who will attend A&M beginning fall 2013.

“It was always a moving experience, especially the Roll Call of the Absent Aggies,” Pye said. “This year, we are at-tending Muster with the Fort Bend Aggie Club. It will be Adam’s first experience so I am looking forward to it.”

2013 Muster speakerBill Jones, chairman emeritus of the A&M System Board of Regents, will be the speaker of the 2013 campus Muster.

Jones is the founder of The Jones Firm, a public law and government relations firm in Austin. He was named the 2010 Texas Aggie Bar Association Lawyer of the Year, and U.S. News & World Report selected him as one of the “2011-2012 Best Lawyers in America.”

Jones served on the board of regents from 2003 to 2011 and was chairman of the board from 2007 to 2009, as well as on the Corps of Cadets Development Council Advisory Panel.

Plant blast in West stirs A&M community response

The explosion at a fertilizer plant in West, Texas — a

town of less than 3,000 people located 100 miles northwest of College Station — brought students and community members into relief action Thursday.

The blast, which occurred around 8 p.m. Wednesday, in-jured more than 160 and killed an unspecified number. The death toll was initially report-ed at 15 but officials would back away from estimates later in the day Thursday. A fire at the town fertilizer plant containing a reported 54,000 pounds of anhydrous ammo-nia fertilizer ended in an ex-plosion that shook the town and toppled houses across a five-block radius, according to the Associated Press.

“We lost some really good people today,” West Mayor Tommy Muska said in a press conference.

Bryan-College Station has been quick to respond to the unfolding tragedy.

The state has also de-ployed Texas Task Force 1 — an urban search and rescue team sponsored by the Texas A&M Engineering Exten-sion Service — to assist in rescue efforts.

“We’re thinking about the folks in West but we’re glad that the task force is there and able to assist the local jurisdic-tion,” said Brian Blake, com-munications director for Task Force 1.

The task force’s primary mission is to facilitate search and rescue. They arrived at 8 a.m. Thursday and be-gan a wide-area search, dur-

ing which rescuers traveled block-by-block to look for survivors. The task force also came equipped with a special-ized canine unit.

“They have all the equip-ment and tools necessary to shore up buildings destroyed by the blast,” Blake said. “We also have five search-and-res-cue K-9 [units] that are very efficient at finding people.”

The team is prepared to be completely self-sufficient for 72 hours and is deployed between three to ten days on average, though Blake said he cannot estimate how long they will be involved in rescue operations in West.

The College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences deployed its Veteri-nary Emergency Team to the explosion under orders from the state. The team will pro-vide veterinary care for search and rescue animals in addi-tion to domestic animals that may have been injured during the incident.

Aggieland Outfitters set up a donation drive station Wednesday in the Post Oak Mall parking lot to take in donations. Several campus organizations quickly collabo-rated with the company to bring assistance to the citizens of West. The Department of Student Activities organized its own donation drive until 4 p.m. Thursday in the Kol-dus Building before taking the donations to the station at the mall.

Melissa Shehane, assistant director for the leadership and student center in the Depart-ment of Student Activities and Class of 2004, said the choice to help a community in need was easy upon hearing of Ag-

gieland Outfitters’ donation drive.

“We have a commit-ment as Aggies to do selfless service,” Shehane said. “It is best as a member of the community to work within the community.”

Even though it had been less than 24 hours since the explosion, Shehane said the community support had been substantial.

The Department of Stu-dent Activities contacted SGA and MSC organizations to notify their members of on-going efforts to help the West community. MSC FISH saw an opportunity to use its re-sources to help those in need.

Katy King, advisor for MSC Fish and Class of 2001, said the organization is already hosting Kyle Field Day on Saturday, and it was simple to extend the scope of the community ser-vice event to include assistance for the people of West.

“We’ve created a new booth for people to sign cards and write well wishes for victims,” King said. “There will also be a blood truck taking donations.”

A&M steels for road trip against No. 10 Arkansas

The Texas A&M base-ball team aims to break

its slump as it enters a three-game road series against Ar-kansas this Friday through Sunday. A&M has lost eight of its last nine SEC games and is currently on a four-game losing streak.

A&M (21-17, 6-9) has fall-en to sixth in the SEC West standings and tenth overall in the SEC. Arkansas (25-14, 9-6) is second in the West and stands third overall in the conference.

The status of A&M’s top offensive producers remains in question for the series. Sopho-more Cole Lankford has sat out the past five games due to illness and senior Mikey Reynolds injured his knee last Saturday, benching him for the foreseeable future.

“[Reynolds] is sore, obvi-ously,” head coach Rob Chil-dress said. “But I think it will be a day-to-day thing.”

With Lankford and Reyn-olds out, A&M will look to junior catcher Troy Stein to manage the workload. Stein is

third on the team with a .307 batting average and has dou-bled five times with 13 RBIs. As a team, A&M has strug-gled to drive in runs during clutch situations.

“We get into a big situa-tion with runners in scoring position and sometimes we don’t get the big hit,” Stein said. “It’s a frustrating pro-cess when they don’t fall, but it makes it that much better when they do.”

A&M has not won a week-

end series since March 24, when they scored a 2-1 series win over Ole Miss. A&M has lost its last three series, includ-ing a sweep by each South Carolina and Mississippi State.

“I think that we’re under-achieving,” junior Krey Brat-sen said. “I think we have a group of guys who can be great players, but haven’t reached that level. I think I have more confidence in some of the freshmen than they do themselves.”

Junior catcher Troy Stein will carry A&M’s offensive workload with the absence of the Aggies’ top producers.
