Scottish Country Dance Festival Teams of Scottish country dancers display their dancing skills. Various different classes available for all ages and levels of dancing skill. A trophy is presented by the adjudicator to the winning team in each class.

This year the Ballroom celebrates its 90th year.

Over the years, the Beach Ballroom has played host to an ever-widening range of events and functions. Royal visits, corporate dinner dances, graduation balls, pop concerts, fashion shows, exhibitions and conferences have all had a warm and friendly welcome in this unique setting.

Construction of the Beach Ballroom began in 1926 and the building was officially opened by Lady Provost Lewis on May 3rd 1929 and celebrated with a Masked Ball.

When the lights went out during World War II, the Beach Ballroom was used as a barracks for the nearby anti-aircraft base. The great re-opening came in time for Christmas 1946, when hundreds of re-united couples donned their glad rags and danced to the new sounds of Swing.

The 1950s were the heyday of the Ballroom when couples thronged to listen and dance to all the top bands of the decade like Joe Loss, Ted Heath, Victor Sylvester and Harry Gold. Local bands like Leslie Thorpe’s were also hits at the regular weekend dances.

The most legendary gig of all came in 1963 when the Beatles played to a modest crowd a couple of weeks before they had their first chart-topper ‘Please Please Me.’ The Fab Four cost only £45 per night in 1963.

Since the Beach Ballroom was built it has seen many changes, but still intact is the dance floor, one of Scotland’s finest. It floats on steel springs which gives the dancers that extra bounce when dancing. In early 2010 the dancefloor was replaced as part of the ongoing refurbishment of the Beach Ballroom to ensure the venue continues to make memories for visitors for the next 90 years.

Holding a place in the hearts of many Aberdonians since it was built in 1929, the Beach Ballroom has seen many changes – not only to its interior but also with regards to events.

Primarily famous for its excellent sprung dance floor the Beach Ballroom was described as “The Finest Dance Hall in Scotland” with many dancing competitions featuring high on the programme.

Today, dance competitions still play a role in the entertainment programme along with many other events such as Christmas parties, Strictly Ballroom, wrestling, weddings and corporate functions.

From 17 May to 17 June 2019 the Promenade Room in the Beach Ballroom will host an exhibition of artefacts and

memorabilia linked to the ninety years that the Beach Ballroom has been open.

The exhibition will be free to view and will be open Monday to Friday 10am-4pm and at the weekend when the building

is open for events*. It will include pictures, newspapers, posters, silverware and much, much more.

Why not pop in when you are at the beach esplanade to reminisce, or just to find out more about one of Aberdeen’s most iconic buildings.

Access informationThe Beach Ballroom has partial wheelchair access. Access to the Main Ballroom is reached through an intercom system in the lower car park.

Access to the balcony of the Ballroom is through the doors on the main promenade.

These doors are open half an hour prior to the event starting. Should you require earlier access, this can be prearranged by contacting the Duty Manager 01224 647647.
