Delivering the Perfect Balance for a Healthy Lifestyle! As one of the UK’s fastest-growing water brands, Saka Natural Mineral Water is building a growing reputation as the healthy water brand of choice due to its naturally occurring 8.22pH balance.

In difference to many mineral waters that are acidic in composition, alkaline-rich Saka provides an even healthier choice to consumers. Alkaline water is considered to be the healthier water option as it has a greater concentration of oxygen and is known to actively remove harmful toxins from the body. It also helps mitigate the effects of consuming foods and drinks that cause acidic waste to build up in the body.

With essential minerals and nutrients naturally present in Saka, such as magnesium and calcium, its alkaline-rich properties facilitate fast absorption of these vital elements leading to a healthier body.

Activate a Healthier Lifestyle...

As part of our mission to communicate a positive health message and reinforce the importance of drinking alkaline water for good health and well-being, we continue to support sporting bodies, organisations and teams, as well as individual endeavours and sporting events across the UK.

Already long-term sponsors of Sports Aid, who support the future of British Sport, Saka builds on a heritage of supporting British Athletics, Volleyball England and British Basketball among others. Saka is also now the water brand of choice of Premiership rugby giants London Irish RFC, who have realised its pure waters keep their players hydrated and refreshed as part of their aim to make players more alert and responsive in a highly competitive, physically demanding sport.

However, Saka does more than deliver a healthy lifestyle option as it also delivers a unique, smooth and pure naturally refreshing taste experience, which has won back-to-back iTQi Superior Taste Awards.

WalKing With the WoUnded cUmBRian challenge

100 teams reach their peak and join our wounded in a race across the Lake District

on Saturday 18th may, the idyllic setting of Patterdale welcomed

and hosted 400 people from

across the United Kingdom to partake in a physically and mentally challenging trek across the cumbrian hills. this year's

event was designed to provide an exhilarating contest in a fun environment, which certainly made for a competitive race!

the cumbrian challenge 2013, supported by helly hansen, was Walking With the Wounded’s inaugural public event, where 100 teams undertook one of two challenges: ‘the tough’ (20k hike, 1144m of altitude gain, 5 peaks) or ‘the tougher’ (33k hike, 2327m of altitude gain, 10 peaks). Both challenges were set amidst the stunning scenery of the lake district, and offered teams a chance to race against members of the 2013 South Pole allied challenge expedition teams. all whilst raising funds for Walking With the Wounded, funding the re-education and training programs for wounded servicemen and women.

team glenfiddich members were present amongst the crowds in cumbria, which has been a crucial location for the team’s training. the Walking With the Wounded everest expedition team trained using the cumbrian terrain in their extensive training schedule. the

cumbrian challenge 2013 marked yet another monumental training event in the lead up to the South Pole allied challenge; as well as raising awareness for this fantastic cause and the importance of fundraising behind the charity.

“the cumbrian challenge provided a fun-packed and exhausting weekend to fill the memory bank. it offered the chance for people to see what it really takes to be part of one of our expeditions, as well as the importance of raising funds for our re-education and training programs. our aim is to grow the cumbrian challenge into an annual flagship event, and we can only do this with your generous support.” said andrew cook.

andrew cook, director of Fundraising at Walking With the Wounded

“What a fantastic challenge - a great day has been had by all despite the weather! it really

encapsulates what we hope to achieve in the South Pole, and the team work that i’ve encountered with the military on various deployments has been very much emulated with the team glenfiddich members i was with today.”

Well done to all teams involved and we hope to see you again next year to take on another challenge and raise more funds for Walking With the Wounded.

Fitness for you - Sarah Jones Personal Training - Resistance Training.

hello, most people understand a cardio workout can increase fitness, build stamina and even help to lose weight, but with many men lifting heavy weights and women avoiding weights completely, what are the benefits of using resistance exercises in your workout?

Strength and resistance training has major benefits both physical and mental. improved posture, increased self esteem, decreased injuries, pain management, improved posture and increased balance and mobility.

improved muscle strength and tone is the biggest benefit on the body physically, the greater the force taken through the muscles the greater increase in muscular strength. this can make everyday tasks like housework, gardening and carrying shopping bags easier. additionally, the positive impact strength training can have on recreational goals can play a huge part in your success.

increasing muscle strength will in-turn tone the muscles giving them shape and definition. So ladies and gents listen up; if it's a tighter, toned body your after, then its time to kick start your weights program. Rest assured ladies, testosterone is an important factor in the development of muscle, so as women have very low levels of this hormone your muscles develop differently, meaning a little resistance training will not lead to a bulky, butch physique.

Weight management will also be increased by strength training.

yes, you read that right working with resistance equipment can help your weight loss.

While cardiovascular exercise is a great way of burning the fat, adding strength training to your workouts will burn extra calories every day. you'll even be burning extra calories while you're sleeping or sitting on the couch watching eastenders.

For every additional pound of muscle you gain, your body burns around 50 extra calories every day of the week.

one 15-20 minute session a week is enough to gain all

the potential health benefits of strength training. Start slowly and work your way up, even using tins of baked beans as makeshift dumbbells or using just your body weight is a good start.

over the course of your sessions, use exercises that work all the muscle groups and do 8-12 repetitions. Be sure to use a suitable weight so that the last few reps feels like hard work. But remember, muscles grow while resting, so pushing yourself as hard as you can seven days a week won't do you any favours. make sure you have rest days.

if you would like any advice on resistance training or help in achieving your fitness goals please do not hesitate to contact me on the details below.

happy lifting!Sarah x

the art and Science of neuro linguistic Programming (nlP) for Business and Personal excellence

What is NLP?neuro linguistic Programming (nlP) is a field of applied Psychology based on the principle that all behaviour has a structure and that this structure can be identified, learned and adapted to create excellence.

The difference that makes the differenceestablished nearly 40 years ago neuro-linguistic Programming is a model of excellence focussed on studying a person’s thoughts, feelings and behaviours. it integrates the mind and body through the nervous system (neuro), communication and the power of language (linguistic) and the unconscious habits and patterns people run (Programming). nlP modelling techniques have been applied to discover the secrets behind successful entrepreneurs, psychotherapists, olympic athletes and business leaders.

Business Applications of NLP

Problem: Business owner Peter found it difficult to deal with staff performance issues, particularly when a member of staff was unmotivated or underperforming. Solution: through nlP Peter learned how to have ‘difficult’ conversations by asking the right questions, understanding other people better and having more confidence in himself.

Jayne works in customer service and has always been very good at connecting with others and finding out what their needs are very quickly. “i have always known i was good at what i do” she says “and nlP has given me a way of understanding it so i can teach it to others.” She has a new job now and is able to use her talent to help the company grow.

Problem: alison worked in a sales team who were losing customers to their competitors. Solution: learning nlP helped alison listen better to her clients and sell more effectively, better matching customers to products and increasing sales by nearly 30%.

“Understanding other peoples motivations and likely responses to change” is essential as a leader says Nigel, a service manager in local government. “The NLP tools I apply have enabled me to be more creative, inspiring and persuasive with my staff and directors.”

Personal Applications of NLP

Problem: Sarah had a very busy work and home life and was struggling to balance the demands of managing her team at work with the needs of her children and husband. Solution: the nlP course gave her a deeper understanding of her own values and drivers and an appreciation of why she behaves in the way she does – particularly some of the things that were holding her back.

a 4 time gold medallist, Joe says that working with an nlP coach and building beliefs, enhancing strategies and learning visualisation developed his mental strength and resilience to “help me perform at my best in competitions.”

Problem: Richards health issues were being made worse by his lack of fitness and being overweight. he had tried to address this but kept falling back into old habits. Solution: nlP helped him discover the blocks in his thinking and he learned how to re-program this to start moving forward in a new direction. he lost the weight he wanted to.

As a Counsellor and Psychotherapist Mary was drawn to the NLP approach because “I can get to the heart of what has been maintaining the current situation for my clients very quickly. In my view the NLP language patterns are an essential part of every therapists toolkit”

We are absolutely delighted to introduce Nicola Charles as the face of Salix Alba. This very beautiful

and talented actress/ model/director, began her career at the age of 16 and has worked with many large brands.

Nicola fell in love with Salix Alba due to the ethics behind the products and of course, as a natural beauty, the natural ingredients we use.

In Nicola’s words - “Wicked Beauty Does Not Have To Be Cruel”

Nicola has recently returned to Neighbours, where the viewings have gone through the roof.

Our dedicated team is based in the beautiful English Lake District, known world wide for its inspiring scenery.

We believe that we have created the best natural anti-ageing products available anywhere today.

Our pure water source is close by - a very important ingredient in our creams. This water contains the only known source in the world of naturally occurring salicin. We were inspired to create a revolutionary new anti-ageing cream. The results are amazing!

Salicin is a natural beta-hydroxy acid, which exfoliates the skin by breaking down the outer layer of dead skin cells, allowing healthy cells to rise to the surface, bringing a healthy, youthful glow to the complexion.

The water comes from the English Lake District’s Cartmel Valley aquifer, renowned for its curative powers since the 12th century. This aquifer water has filtered down through the fells, once covered by prehistoric White Willow forests, which are the source of naturally occurring salicin. Many leading skincare brands use chemically derived Salicylic Acid to help regenerate the skin’s appearance, however Salix Alba is the only completely natural formulation on the market.

“We take the gift of natural Salicin from nature, and infuse the pure water with our potent, naturally active ingredients, to produce for you an anti-ageing formulation of excellence.”

Salix Alba comprises a carefully balanced combination of

minerals, including skin enhancing calcium and magnesium, combined with natural anti-oxidants to fully replenish and revitalize skin.

In a world where chemically laden products are the norm, our market research shows that more consumers than ever are questioning their use of this type of product, and would prefer to purchase a natural alternative, which is superior in performance.

And so, after three years of intensive research, Salix Alba can now offer you the first ever all-natural anti-ageing day/night cream.

Salix Alba is made in the English Lake District and harnesses the potent powers of the finest quality, 100% natural, active ingredients.

It contains no parabens and is unperfumed. Suitable for all skin types, neither the cream nor any of its ingredients are tested on animals. Our cream is fully compliant with strict EU regulations, which will be brought into force in July 2013.

This natural formulation moisturises the skin and helps to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. It is rapidly absorbed, leaving your skin feeling healthy and vibrant.

The unique ingredient in this product is spring water from the English Lake District’s Cartmel Valley aquifer - the only water source in the world known to contain salicin naturally.

We take this gift of nature and infuse the pure water with our potent, 100% natural active ingredients, to produce an anti-ageing formulation of excellence.

Suitable for all skin types Not tested on animals Suitable for vegetarians and vegans Fragrance free Does not contain alcohol Free from parabens For more information please visit www.salixalbauk.com

FeatURe: heRdy hUtS

For me, my ‘happy place’ is this: tranquillity, a roaring fire, a good book and a great view.

Perhaps throw in a glass of red. ok, two. i suspect this is the very definition of a little slice of heaven for many of us. luckily, i’ve recently found my ‘happy place’ and it’s right here on my doorstep.

herdy huts is located in great langdale, and some might say,

the best possible location in the UK. it’s a bold statement, but not one without substance. these delightful little shepherd huts, situated at great langdale national trust campsite, are the ultimate in ‘glamping’. cosy, peaceful and romantic, but with all the luxuries required to tempt even the most hardened city-dweller.

the brainchild of businesswoman,

Sarah Pike, who moved to the lake district in 2000, herdy huts was borne in an accidental fashion. “i was searching for a ‘shed’ for my oldest son, the idea being that he would have his own space. Whilst researching, i came across the idea of shepherd huts and at that moment, a light came on! i have always been self-employed and therefore, this discovery seemed an

innovative way to bring something completely different to the area.”

it was this lightbulb moment that determined Sarah’s path and in July 2012, herdy huts was open for business. the huts are beautifully equipped with everything you could possibly need for a luxury stay. each has a double and single bed (with hypoallergenic memory foam mattresses), so perfect for couples or small families, fresh linens, all cooking utensils and a wood burning stove. even the trimmings, such as candles and cushions have been carefully considered. With the huts set away from other campers and with an outside brazier, there

is plenty of opportunity to admire the views. and what dramatic views they are. Situated at the very heart of the great langdale Valley and overlooked by the langdale Pikes, there is no finer setting for walkers, climbers, or even those preferring the gentler art of gazing in wonder.

despite their uniqueness today, shepherd huts have a rich history, with the earliest reference found from the early 16th century during the reign of Queen elizabeth i. “Shepherds would actually have lived in shepherd huts in the langdale valley at this time.” says Sarah. “they have a heritage here. i’m delighted to be able to bring

them back to the lake district.”and it’s clear that these intimate

little huts have captured hearts. “People travel from all over the country to stay here.” says Sarah. “We try and make their stay as memorable and personal as possible, arranging champagne and hampers of local produce for those who require an extra special touch. they really are a ‘den for the soul’”

herdy huts charge £250 for a 4 night stay (mon-Fri), £250 for a weekend stay and £455 for a week. to make a booking or for further information, please visit www.herdyhuts.co.uk or call 07800 577616.

Four-legged friends visiting a cumbrian inn will be getting the ViP treatment with a

series of new dog-friendly facilities, including the addition of a special shower created for man’s best friend.

the quirky addition is part of the Sun inn’s drive to make dogs feel just as special as their owners during their visit to Kirkby lonsdale. the 17th century inn and restaurant opens up four luxury, dog-friendly rooms. the Sun inn has also recently introduced complimentary ‘pooch packs’ including a towel, a dog bowl and a special tasty treat. Plus, all dog owners are given details

of an introductory walk along the River lune and can borrow sturdy wellington boots, macs and umbrellas free of charge to protect against the elements.

owner mark Fuller says, “Kirkby lonsdale is a well-known pet lovers’ haven, with dogs allowed in many of our friendly cafes and small, independent shops. the investment we’ve made in facilities like our new dog shower is all about showing our guests they can enjoy a luxury getaway where their pets are genuinely welcomed and can enjoy the holiday experience with their owners – it obviously saves on kennel costs too. Plus with so much stunning

countryside close at hand, there’s an abundance of stick-throwing opportunities!”

later, man’s best friend can curl up in front of a real log fire in the Sun inn’s traditional bar area, while guests of the human variety sample some local ales and tuck into cumbrian fayre from the Sun inn’s aa rosette-rated kitchen.

and it’s not just dogs who are welcome at the Sun inn – the 17th century hideaway has already played host to its first feline visitor recently as well!

the terrace is a unique row of 5 beautiful cottages brought together in the

stunning Windermere area of the lake district. they can be rented individually or collectively, making it the ideal venue for large family events. each cottage has a rustic, countryside aesthetic to the outside, with nothing but luxury on the inside. the 4 to 5 star residences are large enough to comfortably accommodate up to 14 people each, with enough cottages to house a total of 60+ people, plus ample parking for 20 cars. Whether you need a week’s holiday or even just a weekend break to celebrate your special event in the gorgeous lake

district, the terrace will happily accommodate and delight.

the terrace is located close to Windermere Village, whilst still being secluded enough to give you all the peace and space you could desire. all of the cottages have their own boutique identity and are big enough to accommodate large groups of people, while still giving you the room to relax.

the level of finish to each cottage is truly outstanding, ranging from four poster beds to wet rooms and flat screen tvs. the cottages have patios and outside seating, with Bannerrigg having an eight seat hot tub and its own stone-built barbeque. there is even a

pianola inside for those musical sing-alongs (a sedate version of karaoke). each has its own dining room with enough room to seat at least the house's capacity, often more. Boston house comes with a fourteen seat cinema room including surround sound, dVd Blue-Ray and a hi-definition projector in the cellar. alice howe, Boston house and Bannerrigg are all dog friendly, allowing you to bring your best friend along for the holiday.

all houses are carefully maintained and cleaned after each visit, with the gardens, lawns and courtyards lovingly cared for to give you the best experience indoors or out. Food deliveries can

the terrace accommodates a wide variety of events from weddings and birthday parties to corporate get-togethers and team building. the owners are always happy to help with both advice on what to do and the arranging of these activities. they can even arrange cocktail bars, catering, flower arrangements and other decorations or anything else to help make your stay in the area even more special.

Prices range from only £800 to £1,630 which, when split between a party, often comes to less than the price of a B&B and even some ymcas! Whether you want to stay for a week, monday to Friday or even just the weekend, the terrace has a deal to meet all needs.

A break for the border...

When you live in the most stunning part of the UK, it can seem

challenging to plan a minibreak in a location with the kind of scenery we are so accustomed to in the lake district.

Personally, when i’ve only got a night or two away, i don’t want to spend too long travelling to my destination, so was delighted that Simonstone hall in hawes, north yorkshire was just an hour away from Windermere. in my opinion, that is a perfect distance for a mini break, far enough away to forget daily life but close enough so that you don’t have to spend all day in the car getting there. the drive to hawes is incredibly picturesque, there are no traffic jams on busy

motorways, the whole journey is through countryside where you are surrounded by mountain scenery that is breathtaking.

i was suitably impressed as we approached Simonstone hall. We were presented with a wonderful stone building set in the peaceful north yorkshire countryside. immediately the independent family run hotel made me feel relaxed, then suddenly mild panic set in when i discovered i had no phone service or wifi access! gradually the panic turned to relief and i was reminded of a time when my husband and i weren’t checking our iphones every five minutes and actually talked to each other.

our standard room was

traditionally furnished, the highlights being the complimentary molton Brown toiletries and the china tea set on our tea tray.

hawes seems to be a walker’s paradise, whether you are a gentle ambler like me or a hardcore mountain trekker, there is something for everyone. however, the weather was not on our side, so we took advantage of relaxing in the lovely lounges with a bottle of wine. the wine list was varied with a selection to please all tastes and budgets.

For dinner we had two options, the more formal Four Fells Restaurant or the Brassiere. as we had our young daughter with us we decided to dine in the latter which we hoped would offer a

more relaxed atmosphere. the friendly and efficient staff served the most fabulous Rib eye steak. my husband is from a farming family so can be very particular about the quality of meat, but we both agreed it was delicious. after a peaceful night’s sleep we enjoyed a breakfast of eggs Benedict. What a treat! the chef was even happy to replace ham with smoked salmon for me.

hawes itself is a quaint yorkshire village, but citygoers be prepared to step back in time. even as a Windermere girl i was surprised at the peace and quiet. Simonstone hall is the perfect destination for a minibreak. in the heart of the yorkshire dales it provides a lovely place to relax, unwind and step out of your daily life.

Cumbria’s Leading Tourist Attraction appoints New Directors for the first time in ten years

Windermere lake cruises has unveiled the appointment of two new directors for the first time in a decade. the news coincides with the twentieth anniversary of Bowness Bay Boating company purchasing the Windermere iron Steamboat company in may 1993 to form Windermere lake cruises.

Windermere lake cruises is one of the top ten most popular ‘paid for’ visitor attractions in england, according to official figures from Visitengland, with more than 1.25 million annual passenger journeys being made on england’s longest lake, and currently employs more than 150 staff.

today, Windermere lake cruises has confirmed that John Woodburn becomes the firm’s new operations director, while andrew Simon is named as Finance director. Both are long-standing employees and have progressed through the ranks of the company over a number of years. mr Woodburn has worked for Windermere lake cruises for

more than 35 years, while mr Simon joined as a youth training Scheme (ytS) apprentice in 1998.

at the same time, group chairman Bill Bewley announced that Windermere lake cruises limited’s owner, Bowness Bay Boating company. limited is changing its name to Winander group holdings limited to better reflect the diversity of its business assets.

mr Bewley says, “it is a momentous day for Windermere lake cruises. these new appointments are well-deserved and are part of our long-term strategy to strengthen our management team and ultimately safeguard our commercial development. Both John and andrew have been chosen for their managerial and technical ability and will help ensure the business is well-positioned to drive forward for the future.”

“By chance, today’s news coincides with the twentieth anniversary of Bowness Bay Boating co. acquiring

the Windermere iron Steamboat company, to become the company we know today as Windermere lake cruises. therefore, the timing of this announcement has particular significance.”

John Woodburn joined Windermere lake cruises as a ‘spare pier man’ in 1976. By the mid-1980s, he was the Skipper of a famous Windermere steamer, and in recent years he has overseen the company’s fleet of vessels and piers as Senior operations manager.

he comments, “there are many reasons why i enjoy working for Windermere lake cruises, including the fantastic view from my office window, the people i work with and the fulfilment of helping to give visitors to the lake a great day out. having started as a seasonal pier man and now having progressed to become a director of the company, it is great to work for a company that enables its staff to fulfil their potential.”

32 year old andrew Simon, who originally comes from high newton, adds, “Windermere lake cruises is a great place to work and i’m very grateful for the personal development opportunities i’ve had here over the past fifteen years. after initially joining through a business apprenticeship scheme, it’s been great to build my skills and experience in accounts and management and to qualify as a chartered management accountant. i’m really looking forward to helping shape the company’s growth and prosperity over the coming years.”

mountain Rescue is a feature of life in the lake district and

the liveried land Rover rescue vehicles and red-coated members are a familiar sight, either on the fells or fundraising in our communities. locally, we have two teams – Kendal mRt and langdale ambleside mRt – as well as active members of comRU (the cave and mines rescue unit) and handlers and dogs from lake district mountain Rescue Search dogs.

everyone involved is a volunteer and all the teams rely on donations and fundraising to support their work.

the two local teams answered more than 140 call outs between them in 2012 – not only in winter conditions and on the high mountains where you might expect someone to get into difficulties, but also in the summer months and on popular tourist routes. Rescue teams also get involved in searching for missing people, on the hills and in more urban settings, and cumbrian teams have played a big role in flood rescues and other high profile situations.

all this needs a huge investment of time by members both for training and for attending callouts and mountain Rescue england and Wales has calculated that it costs about £40,000 per annum to run each team and about £2,000 to fully equip each new team member.

teams work hard to raise sufficient funds to provide fit-for-purpose kit for their members, including warm, waterproof clothing for all seasons and communications equipment, as well as bigger items such as

vehicles, medical equipment, stretchers and their rescue base buildings. members then add to that with a rucksack full of personal first aid kit, maps and a compass, torches, headlamp and batteries, notepad and pen, radio, pager and mobile phone.

you can see how that total of £2,000 is easily reached and why every £1 raised by supporters, by local businesses and by those who enjoy the lake district is one less £1 to be raised by the volunteer team members themselves!

to find out more about mountain Rescue and to donate to our local teams in Windermere and Kendal, go to www.mountain.rescue.org.uk, www.lamrt.org.uk or www.kendalmrt.org.uk.

Safety adviceWeatherBe prepared, by getting a reliable local weather forecast before you set off.

www.lakedistrict.gov.uk/weatherline, the national Park Weather Service is good for fell top conditions, temperatures, cloud base etc. Plan a route that is suitable for the forecasted weather (but expect it to be worse) and suitable for the weakest member of your party, and tell someone responsible what that route is. make sure you have a map covering your route and a compass. Know how to use both.

www.mwis.org.uk is also a very good site with an indication of how the weather could affect you on the summits.

First aidlearn some first aid, and take a first aid kit with you. and get your friends to do the same. they're the people who are going to sort you out!

Clothing and equipmenttake appropriate clothing including waterproofs, spare warm clothes, hat and gloves, a torch, enough food and drink for the planned trip plus a bit extra for the unplanned part.

Technologytry to avoid relying on communications or gPS. it's all very well until you drop it, its batteries fail, or it becomes too dark to see it and you forgot your torch!

With thanks to langdale ambleside mRt for this advice – a fuller version is on the team website at www.lamrt.org.uk.

the circuit from coniston over the old man and Wetherlam, taking in Swirl how and Brim Fell on the way, has understandably become something of a classic. its attractions, and accessibility make it a popular destination, especially at weekends, when large, straggling groups are likely to be an irritation. Reflect that Wainwright complained about the crowds in 1960!

this shorter (but still substantial and worthwhile) circuit omits the final section over Wetherlam. an interesting climb, much of which is through old mine workings, is followed by an excellent high-level walk along a broad ridge – which made it into Wainwright’s “finest ridge-walks” list. the first part of the descent requires some care but otherwise is easy. Unusually, both ascent and descent pass directly by sizeable and attractive mountain tarns.

Summits visited: coniston old man (2633ft/803m)Brim Fell (2611ft/796m)Swirl how (2630ft/ 802m)Start: coniston villagedistance: 8 miles/12.75km height gain: 2930ft/890mtime: 6 hoursmap: oS explorer ol6 (South-western)

Facilities:the main village car park has toilets and an information centre which is open daily from 0930 to 1700. there are shops, plenty of accommodation and many places to eat and drink in the village.

Parking: Park on the main car park in the centre of coniston village (Sd 303975). on non-school days, there is additional parking in the John Ruskin School on lake Road; this is reached by leaving the village centre southwards and turning left at the crossroads by the garage. if all else fails there is a sizeable car park at the far end of lake Road close to the lake, but starting here adds a mile to the round trip.

the walk:turn left out of the main car park and at the t-junction walk up the lane by the bridge signposted to the Sun hotel. immediately beyond the hotel go right (signed coniston old man and levers Water) and at the end of the short lane continue through the waymarked gate along the track. this passes a building which is part of coniston’s hydro-electric scheme, and climbs gently through a gate/kissing gate above church Beck to arrive at miners Bridge. do not cross this but continue on the path ahead with the stream on your right. go through a kissing gate adjacent to the business end of the hydro scheme and continue on the well graded path up the valley with its many old spoil heaps and other signs of former mining activity. Soon a broader panorama opens out ahead with coniston old man to the left and the ridge along which we will return to its right.

the path levels and becomes grassier, going through a gap in one wall and a kissing gate in a second

before rising to meet the broad stony track coming from the car park at the top of the Walna Scar road. turn right onto it and in a few yards fork left. the stony path now climbs somewhat roughly up through old mine workings, past ruined buildings and across old cableways, all of which are worthy of pauses for further examination. approaching the top of the old workings, a point is reached where there is a level on the left with a well preserved entrance, and above it a prostrate cableway tower; here look for a junction and turn right. Soon the climb eases and, as the path runs over a little rise, low Water appears ahead – a good place for a break.

From here the onward way looks quite uninviting but in fact zig-zags up quite easily helped by some pitching and steps. Soon to the right appears the grassy ridge top going over Brim Fell and Swirl how to Wetherlam, which is seen behind levers Water. the cairn and massive stone structure on the summit of the old man are now only a couple of minutes away. From the summit, the view is extensive, the gems being morecambe Bay with the estuaries of the Kent, leven and duddon to the south, the Scafell group to the north-west, and the magnificent rock wall of dow crag between them.

leave northwards along the broad ridge which can be seen running on to the cairn on Brim Fell and beyond. Keep to the ridge top to avoid dropping down the path to goat’s hawse; the path itself is stony but wandering along

the nearby cropped turf is a joy. cross the rocky summit of Brim Fell and descend into the depression of levers hawse; on the left the water is Seathwaite tarn and the hill to its right is grey Friar. climb past the subsidiary summit and cross the minor depression to the final slope which leads to the top of Swirl how. the prominent cairn, which stands on the edge of the crags falling into greenburn, is only marginally lower than that on the old man and, being at the northern end of the ridge, is by far the better viewpoint for mountains; the vista round the northern arc from the Scafells to the helvellyn ridge is particularly good.

leave the summit eastwards, towards Wetherlam, and start the descent of Prison Band on the well-trodden way. there are a couple of places where hands are needed but taken at a steady pace with pauses to find the easiest way down, there are no difficulties. Soon you arrive at the col of Swirl hawse, where there is a huge pile of stones.

[From here the circuit could be extended (by 0.75 miles/1km and 500ft/150m of climbing) to include Wetherlam. to do this climb the path ahead and pass the intermediate height of Black Sails on the right to reach its summit. here turn right and follow the path down lad Stones ridge to join the tilberthwaite to coniston path. turn right onto this to drop down to join the valley track above miners Bridge.]

For the main route, turn right at the hawse onto the very easy path which contours round towards levers Water. the way becomes indistinct in wet ground a couple of times; at the second, longer and wetter section, keep left along the base of the slope. Pick up the path again as it reappears and follow it down to and along the left-hand side of the water. Pass the dam at the outflow and descend the stony track which heads down towards coniston, becoming steeper and rougher as it does so. Where the

track turns sharply right, go straight on and follow the much better path round the hillside. continue in the same direction to drop down to the left of the white painted youth hostel and a self-catering block and arrive on their access track. turn right past the hostel and continue on the track to return past miners Bridge, again without crossing it. the track shortly becomes metalled and leads into the village.

Scams are crimes – help stop them!

Scams are schemes to cheat people out of their money. they come in a variety of ways: post, phone, email, online, sometimes with a knock on the door. every year more than 3 million people in the UK fall victim to scams with £3.5 billion lost to scams.

Three things you can do to help tackle scams:1. Report It – phone action Fraud on 0300 123 2040,

the UK’s national reporting centre for fraud and internet crime.

2. Get Advice - phone the citizens advice consumer Service on 08454 040506, you can also report a problem and we will pass on details to trading Standards.

3. Tell Others – warn family, friends and neighbours and soon word will spread.

Remember….• if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. • it you haven’t bought a ticket – you can’t win it.• you shouldn’t have to pay anything to get a prize.• if in doubt, don’t reply. Bin it, delete it or hang up.

• Persuasive sales patter? Just say: “no thank you”.• contacted out of the blue – be suspicious. • never give out bank details unless you are certain

the person is trustworthy• take your time – resist pressure to make a decision

straight away. • never send money to someone you don’t know. • Walk away from job ads that ask for money in

advance.

In the next issue we will be launching a new section in the magazine called First Class

The Face of Windermere and Kendal - classified advertising guideour decision to launch First class resulted directly from our reader’s feedback, many of whom thought that there should be a section of

the magazine where smaller or new businesses could advertise as well as local trades.

We thought that this was such a good idea that we decided to pull together a classified section and call it First class, to reflect the high quality expected by our readers.

the section will have two main benefits:-For the readerFirst class will be a dedicated destination point within the magazine, where readers can easily search for and find selected items and services using headed sections.

For the advertiserFirst class is an ideal platform to direct a targeted audience of potential customers directly to the advertisements of small to medium or new businesses
