    We snacked

We love entertaining! saidDada, as she and her husbandwelcomed the Facets crew intotheir high-rise condo with anamazing view of Chicago. Theduo prepared an impressivecountertop spread of cheese, crackers, fresh fruit, gourmetchocolates, mini cupcakes, Fijiwater, orange juice and pop. Itwas almost too beautiful to eat.

We choseChicago-based fashion designer Sahar Dada, whose clothingmixes modern styles with vibrant colors and embellishedaccents for a unique air reminiscent of her Pakistani-Americanheritage. More familiar with the other side of the camera whilestyling models in her designs, Dada admitted she wasnt used tothe paparazzi.

    We played with products

When makeup artist Alison Penner (below, left) saw Dadas fuchsia frockone of thedesigners favorite piecesPenner knewimmediately how to match her makeup: Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupt Shine lipstick inFuchsia in Excess mixed with NARS lipstickin Shanghai Express to create the perfectspring lip color trend Infrared Rouge.

We foughtthe windAnd the wind won.Sometimes, theperfect gust of windcan leave a modelshair looking moreglamorous than ever... and other times,it can lead to a littleMarilyn Monroemoment. Either way,our girl worked itduring our photo oppoutside ChicagosUnion Station.

I wanted to start off this editors letter with picture-painting metaphorsof spring. You know, its green-grassness, fresh owerisms and othergenerally enjoyable attributes. But, today I wore boots. And a wintercoat. And gloves. Chicagos cold weather is lingering like an unlovedguest, and Mother Nature is nothing but a tease. As she peppers ourweather report with one decent day among a solid string of gloom, its hardnot to sprint to the nearest salon for a pedicure at the rst sliver of sun. Andthen, the next day, when you sashay out the door in open-toed wedges thatshow off your ne feet, you race back to reality as the 40-degree weathertouches your toes, which are perfectly polished in seasonal pastels, no less.

Spring may be slow to get here this year, but we intend to carry on withor without it. Weve dubbed this issue The Fresh Issue, and weve packedour pages with Earth-friendly fashion, expert skincare advice, colorfulcommentary on a three-day juice cleanse and lots of other spring-spiritedcontent. We hope the fresh ideas and opinions sprucing up this issue inspireyou with something neweven if you (like me) are still wearing that grayGap sweater you bought last September.

On a much fresher note, were thrilledto feature Chicago fashion designerSahar Dada on this issues cover.Naturally gifted and beautiful, Dadaand her husband welcomed our smallarmy into their home with open armsand cupcakes. Head to page 15 to seeDada model her own designs, includingthe most amazing embellished leathermoto jacket, and to read about how hermulticultural background inuencesher work.

Whats inspiring you most this spring?

Tweet me at @brittanyabeijon and let meknow. Just dont mention anything aboutthat 70-degree weather youre having.

I guess you could say this skirt makes a

statement. For months, Carrie Hammersnewspaper skirt has been popping up onfashion blogs ( court + hudson, eat.sleep.wear, Nicolette Mason ), and Ive been jealous sinceday one. When Leslie Knope donned one madeout of actual newspapers, clearly inspiredby Hammers design, in the recent weddingepisode of Parks and Recreation , I ipped.Need. Now.

Im obsessed with peanut butter and banana, but I hate all the calories the simple combocontains. The answer to my provisionproblem? Powdered peanut butter productPB2 , which contains just 45 calories perserving (2 Tbsp)compared to 190 calories p erserving of the real stuff. Pick it up during your next Whole Foods trip, then mix it with waterfor a peanut-butter-like consistency and gorg eguilt-free. Did I mention it also comesin chocolate ?

I started falling in TV-love with Joe CarrollsBritish accent and love for literature onFOXsThe Following ... until I rememberedthe character was a sadistic serial killer. Sick, sexy and also starring Kevin Bacon, thisunpredictable psychological thriller is amust-watch. Just make sure you start fromthe rst episode so you understand how theplot unfolds.

Its no secret that I, and many others acrossthis nation, love a cold glass of local beer. Evenmo re, I love to recommend stuff to my friendsan d new beer-drinkers alike. The creators of

I might as well give up the whole trip if I donthav e my phones Google Maps guidance. Tokee p from careening into a ditch, I use theBracketron Universal ProMount to keep myphone at eye-level and my car on course. Theadjustable arm and sides hold all smartphonesand regular GPS units, too!

I generally dont have trouble falling asleepthanks to the million and one things on mydaily to-do list, but when I do, I drink Neuro

Sleep . Containing a chemical concoctionincluding melatonin, magnesium and taurine, half a bottle usually does the trick. Ive hadtrouble locating this blend at certain stores, but Neuro provides the anti-buzz to help ndyou some zzzs. Hey, it sure beats bingingon turkey.

Im about to go bro by telling you aboutthese two essential apps for spring. If youveever wanted to do 100 pushups in a row(because who doesnt), theres an app forthat. Im up to 40! Also, with fantasy baseballin full swing, you need to stay up-to-datewith Rotoworld Fantasy News . Its a season-saver for fantasy rookies and veterans alike.

I know Im a few weeks behind on this, butThe Place Beyond the Pines should be onyour must-see list this spring. Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance directs anotherwinner with the help of a grizzled RyanGosling and an actually-talented-this-timeBradley Cooper. If you want my thoughts onthis and all the other movies Ive watched thisyear, check out my movie blog (warning: self-promotion!) 52Flicksin52Weeks.

Im loving the matte trend. OPI matte top coat is a fun change from your usual slick tips. Ofcourse, you can get a variety of different mattecolors, but this top coat tones down any colors

wet nish with the latest look in nail trends. It alsolets you get creative with patterns and designs, mixing shiny and matte. Matte polka dots, anyone?

For you dog lovers out there, Ive discovered whatmay be the greatest source of entertainment foryour pooch: Tug-a-jug . Recommended by my vet,you ll the jug with food or treats and let your doggo to town, tugging, pawing and rolling the juguntil all the treats are gone. Ive never seen my dogso attached to a toy before, perhaps because its the gift that keeps on giving. She absolutely can tget enough.

Bangle bracelets never seem to go out of style.Paired up and multiplied, or ying solo, theyalways make a statement. This botanical resinbangle is a fresh version I found on Etsy thatputs me in the mood for spring. I love funky, fun jewelry that isnt too serious, and mixingwood, leather, metals and resin lets everyoneknow you dont take yourself too seriouslyeither. Have fun with these pieces as you breakout of the winter slump and slide into spring.

It all starts with an inspirationboard. Chicago-basedfashion designer SaharDada sketches an idea in

brightly colored pencilsand tacks it to her corkboard. Head tilted, shethen ponders her colorpalette, ipping througha thick book lled withshades of paint by thethousands. Next, sheaffixes layers of fabricsquares, torn-outmagazine pages andrunway photos thatwill help turn her

Puttin on the glitzDada believes the beauty of womens clothing is in theopportunity for detail. Aside from adding studs or sparkles toher staples, she incorporates her Pakistani-American roots

into her designs by using vibrant colors and uid fabrics thatallow for movement.

My designs are the byproduct of who I am, what I feel andwhere Ive been, Dada said. My South Asian heritage playsan important role in my designs. Its about bringing thePakistani accents to modern silhouettes.

Topping her list of favorite designs ever is a pastel pink, knee-length chiffon jacket with a sequin border that she madenearly four years ago. That jacket is one of the rst custompieces I designed, and Im still able to wear it today, she said. Its the perfect blend of feminine and statement.

FASHION/BEAUTYWhats it like to be your own fashionbrand? Hectic! I barely have a day offbecause Im always coming up withideas, talking to new people, ndingways to expand and designing, along with meeting clients, nishingnew prototypes and making sureeverything is running smoothlyoverseas. But, I love it all.

Whats the biggest inuence on yourwardrobe? My mood. Its all aboutbalance. Some days its a graphicT-shirt with a Sahar Dada blazer, andother days its about throwing on atunic with embellished cuffs. I lovefollowing trends, but I nevercompromise comfort.

Whats the one thing in your

wardrobe youd never give up? One thing youre dying to give up? I dont think I could live without myhand-embroidered Pashmina shawls.Theyre the perfect accessory forany season, and they transitionperfectly with both Eastern andWestern wear. One thing I shouldgive up is the Fendi Magic bag Ibought six years ago. Ill have to visiteDrop-Off very soon!

Whats your guilty pleasure whenit comes to fashion? Harem pantsprinted ones. Yikes! I blame it onmusic festival season.

In one year from today, where do you want Sahar Dada designs to be? Everywhere! [Laughs.] Im workingoutward by having my pieces inboutiques in Chicago and New York, and building a global presence.

What advice do you have for thoselooking to freshen up their style? Dont be afraid to try new things.Even if you arent a risk-taker,add a pop of color or a statementaccessory. The easiest way to stepup your style is by adding smallpieces that bring out the best inyour classics.

A s the sound of ice scraping morphs intobirds chirping, the change in seasonssignals a change in outerwear. Spring isthe time to ditch winters neutrals and

clean out your closet, leaving room to freshenup your outts. And with Earth Day on April 22,theres no better time to invest in pieces thatare trendy, timeless and good for the planet.

Countless designers have incorporated environmentalconsciousness into their clothing, most recentlyseen in the H&M dress Helen Hunt wore to this years

Academy Awards. But the concept of repurposingfabrics isnt a new trend. Starting in the early 90s,Giorgio Armani began weaving hemp into hisclothing lines and the popular designer MartinMargiela worked on reconstructing his own pieces.

It wasnt until 2002 when Stella McCartney unveiledher rocker-chic, animal-friendly designs that thetrend turned into a serious movement. And in 2007,Anya Hindmarch created a retro tote bag with theslogan Im Not A Plastic Bag, launching the reusablebag trend.

Environmentally friendly is a market that continuesto grow, from labels with a focus on supportingimpoverished countries to ones that use organicmaterials. But what does that mean? Heres abreakdown:

Sustainable fashion is part of a growing trendof supporting environmentalism and socialresponsibility. This includes reducing carbonfootprints and using fabrics that minimize damagethrough the use of materials not grown orproduced with damaging chemicals and harsh dyesand paints.

Green clothing, or eco-friendly clothing, is madewith recycled plastics, recycled polyesters and 100percent pure organic cotton. However, less than 1

percent of the worlds cotton is organic. Organiccotton seeds develop healthy soils to fertilize plantsnaturally, using up to 50 percent less energy thanconventional cotton.

Eco-friendly fashion sounds more expensivebecause organic cotton is pricier than regularcotton, but the former is of higher quality and tendsto last longer, so you get more for your money.

Socially responsible methodsof production are used bymanufacturers to creategreat pieces that help theenvironment as much as yourwardrobe. Some methodsreduce water consumption andsynthetic bers, and eliminateharmful chemicals and dyesfrom garments.

Check out these three eco-friendlybrands to color your springfashion picks:

LoomstateLaunched in 2004, the brand usescertied organic cotton for its jeansand tees, with each piece createdto have a lived-in look and feel.It uses organic farming, a form ofagriculture that avoids the use ofsynthetic fertilizers, plant growthregulators and livestock feedadditives. The 321 Collection uses

Tencel, made from the cellulose of wood pulp andharvested from sustainable and organically farmed treesinto an all-natural, 100 percent biodegradable fabric. Inaddition, every piece in this collection is reversible andcan be worn multiple ways. Loomstate also supportsfair trade practices, which promote sustainability andstrive to prevent poverty.

Organic v-neck tee in Eclipse Purple, $40 A super-soft, thin T-shirt in a hot color makesthis more than just your basic staple.

Nami top in Coral/Seafoam, $128 Love the color-blocking design, and the hues areperfect to transition from spring to summer.

Fresh takes on tired trendsGive your wardrobe a spring cleaning this season and beyond By Renee Mailhiot

S pring is the seasonthat signals rebirth, rejuvenation andreinvention. With allthese proverbial steps forward, its no surprise that you may lookat whats in your closet, even thetrendier pieces, with just as muchdismay as your tattered LBD or thatgifted scarf you never really liked.

With all the res of spring, fashion, too, is all about the constantrecycling process. What was newtwo seasons ago has alreadybeen refocused into a fresh trend.Whether you reconsider a differentstyling formula or simply tossand replace, there are a few keytrends in need of refreshment.

Repurposing the peplumThe fashion industry embraced

this hip-accentuating trend a fe wseasons ago, which eventuallyled to a heavy saturation of themass market. But how longcan such a trend stick around, especially one that was so difficu ltto pull off in the rst place?

Some designers continued with thesilhouette on runways to showc asethe fall 2013 fashions, this timewith a focus on longer proportio ns.So, instead of the shorter version sthat jut out just above your hipbones, opt for peplums that stillstart at the waist, but descendto your pockets or longer. Youcan also reach for more subtledesigns with peplums that hint a tthe overall look as opposed to th efocal point of the outt. Anythin gwhere it looks like extra fabricis growing out of your hips wasprobably out from the start.

    A little less leather

While all-over leather sheathsand skirts are still sitting prettyon department store hangers, warmer temps arent as conduciveto this hot trendliterally.Update this rockstar material byincorporating it into your closetwith accented garments. Thesame tip can be extended to menif the moto vibe isnt their thing.

If youre OK with wearing leatheras the prime material, try coloredleather in bold hues for anupdated and unexpected look. The key is to keep it fresh withthe color choice or silhouette.Skin-tight leather elicits a Batman/Catwoman feel (and thats notnecessarily a good thing).

    No more neonDay-glo shades reminiscent

of the 80s were fun, but letsface it, they were doomed to berecycled within a few seasons.Instead of highlighter hues, pastels and subdued colors reignsupreme this spring. Ballet pinks, powdery blues, pale yellowsand mint greens can all besubstituted for those who cravea little color in their wardrobes.

Ladies, replace your coloreddenim in these shades, and men, whether you embraced neonaccents before or not, a crispbutton-down in a pastel shadeor even slim-cut denim can subfor your usual classic pieces.

Contrasting vertical stripes notonly slim your shape, but also

Put away the platformsJust as the clothes themselves, shoe trends have a shelf life, too. Ladies who have been in

favor of the sky-high platform, which ultimately helps with thatheel height and arch, may bedisappointed to see a lack of thestacking silhouette lately. But dontfear, the result is just as chic.

Instead of a black pair of ChristianLouboutin Daffodil-inspired pumps, select a pair of crisp, minimalisticsandals in metallic shades,or go with a little somethingfresher in a oral print.

    Whether its a 1958novella, a 1961

classic lm or a2013 Broadwayadaptation, the story begins witha naive woman, a nameless catand a need for diamonds. Thecaptivating script follows HollyGolightly, a free spirit (who freelyindulges in spirits), as she window-shops through life, clingingto the arms of men with deepwallets and shallow intentions.

We rst meet Golightly on a NewYork morning as she sauntersout of a taxi, holding a pastry butdrooling over the jewelry display

at Tiffany & Co. on Fifth Avenue. As she shuffles home in her

iconic oor-length, black gownand oversized wayfarers, shesreminded that her place in society, and in the world, it seems, is lost.

Writer Richard Greenberg agreesthat Audrey Hepburns classicportrayal of Golightly remainsunmatchable, which is whyhis version, which opened onBroadway on March 20, stickscloser to Capotes originalstoryline. Greenbergs adaptationis narrated by Paul/Fred, played byCory Michael Smith, as he detailshis rocky romance with Golightly,

played by the gorgeousandoriginally brunetteEmilia Clarke

of HBOs Game of Thrones. Beginning with the dismaloutcome of their relationshipand later revealing secrets abouthis own sexuality, the modernversion feels far from rom-com.

So whether youre headed to thetheater district or renting fromNetix, weve prepared freshfruit, Tiffanys-blue punch andother brunch basics for yournext breakfast-for-dinner menuwith Breakfast at Tiffanys.

Earlier this month, as I embarked on a 72-hour

journey to test my willand my abstinencefrom eating like a normal human beingI hadplenty of juice as I attempted my rst-ever

cleanse. Ive always been intrigued by the conceptof body purication via juicing, but never had thecourage (or expendable income) to take it head on.But thanks to the recommendation of my co-worker(and co-editor of this ne magazine), and a Gilt Citydeal, I stepped up to squeeze out this tall task.

Leaving the juice bar the night before I began withmy haul of 288 uid ounces, it soon hit me this wouldbe my only sustenance besides water until everylast sip was sipped over the next three days. Goingfrom three-plus meals a day, including my essentialmorning coffee and occasional snack, to one bottleof juice every two hours was a big adjustment. A scaryadjustment. But a healthy adjustment, I was assured.

Seeing the assortment of unlabeled, numbered bottleslaid out in identical rows of green, yellow, red, green, red and white, I started to feel like Bill Murray inGroundhog Day , knowing the next three days wouldpretty much be exactly the same: Juice, juice andmore juice. And did I mention no coffee? Or cereal?Or sandwiches? Or salads?

Day one got off to a rocky start as my body started tofeel the effects of the nutrient-rich liquids, especiallythat wretched beet juice concoction, Maroon Five.Sitting in a meeting at work, I silently wished mystomach to stop growling. I wasnt sure if it had todo with my lack of food intake, or if the juices werestarting to work their magic, but I was denitelyspeaking out of turn in a room full of peers andconsultants. But I plowed through each pint, onecringing sip at a time.

72 hours of heaven and hellIs juice cleansing really worth the tumult?

    FOOD/DRINK

The 24-hour headache hit hard on day two, but thingsstarted to normalize as each bottle was downed andslam dunked into the nearest recycling bin. But thetaste of eating mud and grass never quite became

normal when drinking (again and again) that thick, redand green sludge. (Note: The cayenne lemonade andcashew milk were very palatable and enjoyable.)

While certain people claimed I was being dramaticabout not being able to eat food, I likened it to takingaway a dogs tennis ball for the same amount of timeand telling it only to play with its tail. With such anabnormal schedule of eating, I did get a bit loopyas the days turned to night (just ask my anc aboutthe nonsensical texts Id send her on my train rideshome after work). And as I watched TV while windingdown before bed, I felt every other commercial wasfor Subway, Olive Garden, Taco Bell or McDonalds, tempting me with that unhealthy goodness similar toDom DeLuise in Fatso .

However, the closer I got to nishing the last bottle, theeasier I guzzled down the juice and the more normal Ifelt. I noted on the nal day that the colors of the juice

were akin to a workout program: The green juice wasa nice, moderate pace on a treadmill, the yellow wasthe resting period, the red juice was an all-out sprintfor several minutes, and the white stuff was like hitting

stop after completing a grueling Versaclimber session.

Overall, I lost about eight pounds, but gained a deeperappreciation for the luxury of having food available atall times. There are millions without the privilege ofthree meals a day (or being able to drop coin for a

juice cleanse), so its great to know I succeeded (i.e., Ididnt pitch several full bottles of juice before reachingthe nish line) and had a warm meal waiting for me theday I emptied the last of the bottles into my stomach.Im a lucky dude, no doubt, but the struggle of drinkingbeet juice twice daily is something I wouldnt wishupon anyone, including all the naysayers whoquestioned why in the world I was doing this cleanse inthe rst place.

Honestly, Im glad I did it, as was my body, but if yourelooking for a way to keep your body healthy and clean, stick to treadmills, leafy greens and the occasionalsmoothie. And maybe a glass of red wine.

    Q&A

Confronted with the everyday challenge ofeating right, its even harder to eat cleanwith all the deliciously unhealthy foodthat litters both Pinterest and our pantries.

If youre looking for the best of both worlds, thenyoull love Hannah Kaminsky of BitterSweet, a foodblogger and crafter whose amazing photography anddelicious vegan recipes have encouraged readers totake a second look at vegan cooking. From breakfastto dessert, Kaminsky helps readers learn how to createhealthy food with natural ingredients that look amazingand taste even better. For this issues Take Five, Kaminsky gives us the scoop on all things vegan.

Vegan cooking is taking on the foodworld in full force. What do you thinkmakes it so popular?

Eating vegan is a healthier choice, and nowthat it has become so accessible throughan abundance of good recipes, morepeople realize not only how easy it can be,but delicious, too. Theres a lot to be saidfor repeated exposure, so the momentum

just keeps building upon itself. Hopefully itcontinues on the upswing. The more veganfood, the better!

Your site is such eye candy! What madeyou decide to share your cooking andbaking through a blog?

Funny enough, it actually started as acraft blog. When I began to experimentmore in the kitchen, I saw it as an edibleform of crafting, and thus it was a naturaladdition. The photos also went with theterritory, rather than being a feature inand of themselves. Who wants to look ata journal of handmade goods without anypictures to illustrate the tutorials or recipes? It has come a very long way in the pastseven years, taking on a life of its own andsteering me subtly to my true passions.

How do you think people can benetfrom making fresh choices like the oneson your site?

Choosing to cook for yourself, no matterwhat the recipe is, will always end upbeing a better choice than anything youcan buy prepared. Being able to pickout high-quality ingredients and controlexactly whats going into your food makesa huge difference, in nutrition as well astaste. Dont forget about the new avorsand dishes youll have access to by takingmatters into your own hands! I wouldvenever been able to nd vegan linguinecarbonara or cheesecake in any local

eateries, so when the craving struck, Iwent ahead and made them myself. Talkabout empowerment.

What do you think is the biggest mythabout vegan cooking?

Theres still the misconception that if itsvegan, then by denition it must be healthy.Make no mistake, dairy- and egg-free

donuts are still sugar-coated nuggets offried dough! A few desserts and a bit of junkfood is important for a happy, balanced dietif you ask me, but at the same time, Imwell aware that pie for breakfast is not thewisest choice.

    Whats your guilty pleasure food?

No guilt here, but Ive been known toindulge in unreasonable portions of icecream, especially on hot summer days.
