mESSAgE fROm THE EXECUTiVE diRECTOR

DEAR MEMBERSThis summer we have presented several outside evening concerts and

musical theater performances which have been very well attended. The

biggest crowd, about 700, came for the July 19th Billy Joel tribute band

on the West Portico of Coe Hall. It was a beautiful evening. We are

looking forward to our fall-winter concert series for Coe Hall on Friday

evenings, once a month, October through April. Details appear here on

page 23.

Our first time luncheon-lecture was very good indeed; Gloria Groom

from the Chicago Art Institute was an excellent speaker. She presented

her research for the exhibition, Impressionism, Fashion and Modernity.

Lunch was served under the oak tree in the Cloister Garden. There will

be another luncheon-lecture next June.

The purchase of the Clark furniture for Coe Hall has made a tremendous

impact on the house. The pieces look stunning in the Gallery where they

evoke the 1920s era more successfully than in any other room of the

house (see photos on page 12). The furniture is now being accessioned

and catalogued. This summer the Foundation was given some

interesting pieces of furniture by the estate of Caroline M. DuBois, of

Oyster Bay Cove, including an exceptionally fine grandfather clock (see

page 26). We are very grateful to her.

In the last few weeks we have submitted three grant applications, one to

the Environmental Protection Fund for the preservation and restoration

of the Manor House, another for an educational facility for the Sensory

Garden. We also made a request to a private foundation to support the

Arboretum's mapping program.

The building of the Sensory Garden is progressing well. Columns for the

the entrance pavilion are currently being built. It is a very exciting

project.

I hope that you will visit Planting Fields to enjoy the beautiful fall colors.

William R. Coe was passionate aboutPlanting Fields, particularly about his trees, plants and flowers.

His letters, and those of his superintendents (now in theFoundation’s archives) addressed to nurserymen andsuppliers, show him over a forty year period regularlybuying stock for the estate, particularly rhododendrons,camellias and orchids. He purchased thousands of orchidplants, mostly hybrids, mainly from five or six sources,including nurseries in Roslyn on Long Island, Hawaii,Florida, England and France.

One of his orders, placed in 1939,was for over 400 plants from asingle grower, A. J. Keeting & Sonsin Bradford, England (the firm stillexists). In the 1920s Mr. Coe wongold medals for his orchid displaysat the American Orchid Societyshows and at the InternationalFlower Show, both held in NewYork City (see photo, above).

The first type of orchid existednearly 100 million years ago. In the

wild orchids grow from the equatorto the Arctic Circle. They are afamily of plants which appear inover 30,000 species (about fourtimes the number of mammalspecies), and over 100,000 species ifwe count man made orchid hybrids.In their natural habitats orchidroots can cling to the bark of a treeor grow from the crevice of a rockand they have spectacular blooms,made ever more wonderful throughhybridization. In Greek mythology,

Orchis, son of a nymph and satyr,drunk at a Bacchanalian party,attempted to seduce a priestess. Forhis insult he was killed by theBacchanalians. His father prayedfor him to be restored to life butinstead the gods changed him intoa flower—an orchid.

In Europe prior to about 1840,tropical orchids were extremely rareand therefore, expensive. Onlyroyalty and the aristocracy could

grow them in their specially heatedgreenhouses. As botanists (oftensponsored by the nobility) collectedmore and more species from thewild all around the world, manynew orchid hybrids began to becultivated. It is in this conventionthat the Coes, beginning about1914, grew rare and preciousorchids in their greenhouses atPlanting Fields. For a wealthyfamily with social status, having avery large collection of rare orchidswas on a par with having acollection of old master paintings.

It was about one hundredyears ago that the fashionwas established of wearingorchids pinned to a dress to look almost like a piece of jewelry.

In the great hall of Coe Hall is aportrait of Caroline Coe, WilliamR. Coe’s third wife, showing herwearing a Cattleya orchid on herdress (about 1930). Of course, itwould have been grown in her owngreenhouse. Michael D. Coe,chairman of the trustees ofPlanting Fields Foundation,remembers that Cattleyas wereCaroline’s most favorite orchidtype. They are native to Costa Ricaand throughout tropical South

America. The genus was named in1824 after Sir William Cattley whowas the first to bloom a rarespecimen imported to England.They are prized for their largevoluptuous lilac or red coloredflowers. From the 1930s throughthe 1970s Cattleyas were producedon an industrial scale to be sold ascut flowers, and were in highdemand for celebratingengagements, weddings, andanniversaries, to be worn as acorsage. The Cattleya eventually fellout of fashion but in recent years,with its vintage charm, interest inthe flower has been revived.

In addition to Cattleyas Mr. Coegrew a wide variety of orchids,including Vandas, Phalaenopsis,Dendrobiums, Brassocattleyas,Cymbidiums, Cypripediums and a hostof hybridized combinations. In the1920s and 1930s Coe donatedplants to Cornell University to beused in propagation experimentsinvolving different levels of lightand watering, and seeds from hiscollection were sometimes sent toCarr’s Orchid Labs. in New Jersey tobe germinated. Mr. Coe wouldsometimes visit his suppliers; in the1920s he went to Low’s Nursery inMiddlesex, England to see theirstock. In a 1929 letter to Mr. Coe,

Eileen Low, the proprietor’sdaughter wrote, “I remember youcare for dark mauve and yellowvarieties.” Other letters in theFoundation’s archives reveal allsorts of issues about purchases. Inthe mid-1930s, William Carter,Coe’s superintendent at PlantingFields, was in correspondence withMiss Low about Brassolaeliocattleya‘Gordon Highlander’ (anintergeneric hybrid including thegenera Brassavola and Cattleya),which, disappointingly, had notflowered for a few years after it hadarrived at Planting Fields.

In 1947 and 1948 Russianémigré Andrey Avinoffpainted watercolor imagesof nearly one hundred of Mr. Coe’s orchids.

The paintings are said to have beencommissioned by Mr. Coe’sdaughter, Natalie, Countess Vitetti,as a gift for her father. Perhapsbecause of Mr. Avinoff’s untimelydeath in 1949, the project wasnever finalized and the watercolorsremained in the possession of theartist’s heirs. They continue to beprivately owned and thirty of themwere exhibited here this spring inthe Manor House. The show waspart of the Nassau County

Museum of Art’s “Garden Party”exhibition.

Andrey Avinoff (1884-1949) grewup in Russia before the revolution,and studied art before emigratingto the U.S. in 1916, where he madea living as a commercialillustrator. However, as a youngman he was a collector ofbutterflies and in 1924 he becamecurator of entomology at theCarnegie Museum of NaturalHistory in Pittsburgh, of which hewas the director until 1945. Hiswatercolors of Plantings Fields’orchids were made in retirementwhile he lived on Long Island’sNorth Shore with his sister,Elizabeth Shumatoff, thedistinguishe d portraitist whopainted many North Shoreresidents including Mr. Coe’seldest son, William Rogers Coeand his wife, Clover, which hang atCoe Hall today. Avinoff’swatercolors are some of his bestwork and are in the manner of thefinest botanical illustrations thatflourished in the eighteenth andnineteenth centuries. In 1960Elizabeth Shumatoff arranged forfifty of the watercolors to bepublished as col ored engravings,of which two sets are in theFoundation’s library.

In the 1950s Coe bought Vandas, atype of spray orchid from WilliamKirch the Honolulu nurserymanknown as the “Orchid King ofHawaii.” In July 1952 Coe orderedtwo each of forty differentflowering-sized Vandas. Two yearslater Kirch air shipped a box offlowers for Mr. Coe to inspect inthe hope that “he will want to addsome to his collection.” Kirchearned a world-wide reputation asan orchid grower; among his clientswas the Emperor of Japan. Withthe advent of air-freight he createdthe successful “Orchid of theMonth Club” offering customers aflowering orchid on their doorstepeach month of the year.

In 1954, at the age of 85,one year before his death,Mr. Coe was keenlypurchasing orchids.

In August that year he wrote toEileen Low his English supplierthat “our orchids are doing welland our collection has been greatlyimproved by the wonderful Vandaswhich we procured in Honoluluabout a year ago. The varieties arecertainly amazing.” He went on, “AsI was very anxious to see PlantingFields preserved, about three yearsago I deeded it to the State of New

York as an adjunct of FarmingdaleAgricultural College, which willtake it over after my death toestablish a college for about ahundred students in horticultureand agriculture. It has to bemaintained in perpetuity.” In hernext letter Miss Low tells Coe ofnew hybrid Cypripedium which “formassive size, substance and coloursurpasses anything we have seen.So much so that we have receivedfrom Sir Winston Churchill hispermission to name it after him…Iwould very much like to send youone…the price is 45 guineas.” Mr.Coe wrote back, “45 guineas is alot o f money for one plant. Am Icorrect in assuming that there areno plants of this variety in theUnited States? On the assurancethat you will ship me a strong,healthy plant that will be floweringthis winter or spring, I will be gladto have you include one in theshipment. I am getting pretty wellalong in years and there is no usein my buying plants and having towait a long while to see thembloom.” We c an only hope that theplant arrived safely and floweredbefore Mr. Coe’s death in March1955. Today there are over 1000orchids in the main greenhouse.Mr. Coe would be proud.

In the 1920s, these extremely rareartifacts were originally purchased bythe Clark family from the well-known interior designer andantiques dealer Charles Duveen. Inthe same decade Duveen was alsofurnishing Coe Hall at PlantingFields for Mr. and Mrs. WilliamRobertson Coe. In 1949, Mr. Coe

deeded the property to New YorkState excluding the mansion’sfurniture which was sold or becamethe property of his children. Coe Hallis currently being refurnished in itsoriginal style. Furniture from CharlesDuveen’s New York City business inthe 1920s very rarely comes on themarket. Therefore, the fifty-four

pieces originally acquired by theClark family are an extraordinarycoup for Planting Fields.

The furniture is in unusually goodcondition; many chairs havesixteenth century tapestry panels ofupholstery which have retainedtheir vibrant colors, and the table

and floor lamps have their originalcustom made silk shades from the1920s. Most of this furniture hasbeen placed in the main livingroom, known as the Gallery, whichsince the 1980s, when the housebecame a museum, has never hadenough furniture to replicate theoriginal furnishing plan by CharlesDuveen, as seen in photos from the1920s, now part of the Foundation’sarchives. Today the room glowswith the sensibility of luxury whichis so central to the creation ofromantic interiors designed by

Duveen to evoke the style of oldEnglish country houses of thearistocracy.

The Clark furniturecollection was owned byAmerican Heiress, HuguetteClark who died in 2011, and by her mother, Anna,wife of the “Copper King”W.A. Clark.

Huguette and Anna lived in twolarge separate apartments at 907Fifth Avenue to which they moved

in 1926. However, Huguette, whowas a 104 when she died, lived thelast twenty years of her life at theBeth Israel Medical Center inManhattan, rather than any other ofher several houses or apartments.

The gallery currently houses thirty ofthe fifty-four pieces of furnitureacquired for Coe Hall from the ClarkFamily Treasures sale at Christie’s,New York City, June 18th, 2014.

Westbury College (1969-1971).Students from all over the worldmarveled at the grounds andbuildings they were largely free toroam. The end of Planting Fields’college life came in 1971 when theproperty was transferred to theLong Island State ParkCommission, part of New YorkState Parks (today known as theNew York State Office of Parks,Recreation and HistoricPreservation).

Mr. Coe’s expectation that hisbeautifully cultivated estate,designed for him by the famousfirm of landscape architects, theOlmstead Brothers, would be usedas a center for horticulturaleducation never fully materialized.

However, today, preservedas a state historic park, andnow a hundred years afterMr. and Mrs. William R. Coefirst began to create theestate we know today,Planting Fields survives asan exceptionally fineexample of a great LongIsland estate, complete with its mansion, hugegreenhouses, and manyother original buildings.

Once on the North Shore therewere hundreds of great estates, butnow there is only a handful, andeven fewer are accessible for visitorsto enjoy. Planting Fields, throughWilliam Coe’s gift to New YorkState, is one of these.

Between 1957 and 1971 PlantingFields was a SUNY campus for aseries of different institutions. The409 acre estate had been created byMr. and Mrs. William R. Coebeginning in 1913, and used by thefamily, mainly as a weekend retreat

until Mr. Coe’s death in 1955. Sixyears earlier he had donated theentire property to the State of NewYork (it was actually sold for $1)with the expectation that it wouldbe used as a center for horticulturaleducation. Planting Fields became astate park, as today, in 1971.

Beginning in 1957, with therecognition that the “baby boom”would lead to a need for moreteachers, the new State UniversityCollege on Long Island at PlantingFields was a four year degreeprogram mainly to train highschool teachers. In 1962 the Collegewas integrated into the new SUNYcampus at Stony Brook. Between1965 and 1969 Planting Fields wasthe Center for International Studiesand Conference Center, and finallya temporary home for Old

Each year Planting FieldsEducation departmentprovides exciting naturebased field trips for morethan 4,000 Long Islandstudents.

We offer a variety of programs thatkeep teachers returning with theirstudents year after year. “Playingwith Plants” and “BeautifulButterflies,” both offered in thespring, help to stimulate youngminds whether it is by plantingvegetables to take home or searchingfor newborn caterpillars in springcatmint. In the fall, “Falling intoLeaves” and “Tremendous Trees”take a close look at the seasonalchanges, offer close up views of theenchanting synoptic garden, and in-depth study of the characteristics oftrees and leaves. During the“Radiant Rainforest” trip which isavailable in both the spring and thefall, students walk through ourprized main greenhouse and learnabout the world’s rainforestsincluding the tropical plants andrainforest animals. For high schoolstudents, we offer tours of thehistoric Coe Mansion and for thosecurrently studying The Great Gatsby,we offer a Gatsby themed tour. Theeducation department is currentlyworking on developing new lessonsas well as public programming inpreparation for the opening of thenew Sensory Garden.

Planting Fields Foundation isworking in partnership with theNew York State Office of Parks,Recreation and HistoricPreservation to establish acomprehensive GeographicInformation System (GIS)database with location data for ourliving collections and parkinfrastructure. By using a GlobalPositioning System (GPS) thearboretum staff will be able torecord the location of trees andshrubs throughout the park thentransfer th eir exact locations intothe GIS database. Staff can thencreate customized records that

pertain to each specific species tohelp with inventory andmaintenance of our currentcollection. This system also allowsstaff to record, preserve and sharehistorical data for various trees,shrubs and plants that are nolonger present due to disease,storm damage or natural end oflife factors. Once this data is full yintegrated into the system we willthen be able to offer customizedweb maps on the internet allowingeach visitor to plan their visitknowing the precise location ofthe species they are interested inviewing while at the arboretum.

The Buffalo Room’s mural waspainted by artist Robert Chanler in1920 for William Robertson Coeand Mai Rogers Coe. Chanlerreceived much of his art training inParis and specialized in paintedscreens and murals. He used theimpasto technique on the BuffaloRoom mural which gives thebeautiful Wyoming landscape atextured relief. He also added hintsof gold to the buffalos which give

the mural a dramatic effect.

Over the last fifteen years theBuffalo Room mural has beenanalyzed by conservators ErinMoroney, ArchitecturalConservator and Mary Betlejeski,Painting Conservator and is beingmonitored in terms of temperature,humidity and light control, all ofwhich factor in preserving such animportant and rare mural.

Longcase clocks were first inventedin England about 1670 using thenew anchor escarpment mechanismwith a long, weight drivenpendulum, hence the tall thinshape of the clock's casing. Untilthe early 20th century longcaseclocks were the world's mostaccurate time keeping technology.

The carved and gilded figures onthe top of this newly donated clockrepresent Atlas and two Victories.Atlas is shown carrying a celestialglobe because in Greek mythologyhe held up the celestial spheres.The earliest method of telling thetime was to observe the changingshadows cast by the sun, hence thetraditional association with Atlasand time.

The clock also features the wingedfigures of Victory (or in Greekmythology, Nike), and theyoriginally held trumpets, which arenow lost (they will be replaced withreplicas). In Greek mythology these

figures are recorded as flying fromthe skies onto the prows ofvictorious ships, as in the greatmarble sculpture of the WingedVictory of Samothrace in the Louvre.The trumpets refer to the conceptof announcing and celebratingvictory with music and may alsohave referred to the chimes in theclock. Victory is also the god ofspeed which is usually measured byreference to time.

The Victories, with their illusion offlight, are typical of sculpture inthe baroque style and the bombéshape of the clock's base isdistinctive of seventeenth andeighteenth century Dutchfurniture. This type of clockremained in demand for well overone hundred years and was revivedin the nineteenth century. Some areless elaborate than others, andsome are gilded all over! Thisversion, which is over nine and ahalf feet tall, looks very handsomein the mansion's front hall.
