Trinity College recog-nized all their top sports-men at the prize giving, which was held last week-end under the patronage of I.M. Imam, Supreme Court Judge with 32 years experience in the Judiciary commencing his career as a career Judge, a distinguished old boy who won the gold medal at Junior school.

At this prize giving cer-emony, Principal Brig. Udaya Ariyaratne, a man with a vision, in his speech commended the boys’ academic and non-academic achievements. “in the sports arena, my students demonstrated there prowess with cour-age and determination. Where they were overall champions in the under-17 and 19 categories in Weightlifting, at the Sri Lanka National School Games.

At the inter-schools national power lifting championship, emerged champions and in the Trinity - St. Thomas’ foot-ball game, we emerged as winners. The team also made a tour to South India and won the three games they played” he added.

“Swimming brought us fame once again, the bas-

ketball team emerged as champions in the Central Province tournament.

The under-10 badmin-ton team won the all-island championship. In hockey, two of our players represented the country in a tournament held in Singapore.”

“We won the gold medal and the Champion Boxer Challenge trophy in the senior Age group category at the Sri Lank National School Games. It was after 29 years that the school won a champi-onship in boxing.”

“We were also able to produce the youngest ever chess champion, at the age of 16 and a stu-dent of Grade two repre-sented the Sri Lanka at the seventh Asian Schools Chess Championships held in India.

In athletics, we won the first place in the 100 meters under-16 hurdles at the National School Games. The under-16 relay team won the first place in 4 x 400 meters at

the All Island Youth Red Cross Meet. We emerged as the Kandy District Kids and Junior Athletics champions.”

In Gymnastic, seven students won the Gold’s in the level one and two test and two students won silver. He said it was a tremendous year of suc-cess of Trinity cricketers, the seniors set a new Sri Lanka schools cricket record by winning eight games in a row, and they were also the all-island champions, and also won the T20 championship and was placed number two in the 50 over tourna-ment with the captain being adjudged as the best school captain.

After lapse of a few years, the rugby team dominated the game, Trinity were the under-15 all island runner-up.

The senior team won the Bradby after two years and the Presidents Trophy after 18 long years. Three of them rep-resented the country at

the Commonwealth rugby tournament, and eight players played for the Sri Lanka Youth team at the Hong Kong tournament.

He hanked the Vice Principal, to all teachers in charge of sports coach-es, school clubs and socie-ties for their untiring efforts and dedication during the year, not for-getting the old boys asso-ciation and individuals for their commitment. He had a special word for the Lord Bishop of Kuruna-gala, Board of Governors, for their continuous guid-ance and also did not for-get the support given by the Parent-Teacher asso-ciation for their contribu-tion, academic adminis-tration and support staff.

On this day the schools highest award “The Ryde Gold Medal” was award-ed to all-rounder and Cricketer Akila Jayasundara. Akila was also presented the best sportsman of the year award.

He led the Trinitians in

2011 from the front to win eight matches in a row and helped to end the season with ten outright wins, and emerged as the schools league champion and T/20 champions and runner-up in the limited over tournament, which earned him the best Cap-tains award for 2011.

The Ryde Gold medal, in an honor of the previ-ous principal, was first presented in 1908 by the Colombo Branch of the Old Boy’s association which has continued to be presented ever since.
