[The ACSC states "The only recorded examples are a mint pair [not perforated 'OS'] showing a faint second impression of the frame plate 5mm above the other", Cat $12,500 for a single]

The doubling is most apparent within the value circle where the lower-left corner framelines are reproduced 4½mm above the bottom frameline & 8mm to the right of the left-hand frameline. There is also a small yellow mark in the white margin at lower-left. The mint pair referred to above is Ex Arthur Gray & sold for $US20,700 (= $A28,750 at the time) in February 2007.

PS WORLD WAR II: 1942 Australian Red Cross POW Envelope with Solid Bar at Base ASC #X2.8 to Malaya with superb Censor h/s applied at Melbourne, endorsed "Japan Force", a couple of minor imperfections. [Prior to WWII, the addressee, Charles Hughes Cousens, was a radio broadcaster. At Changi he refused to make broadcasts for his captors. He was removed to Tokyo and "persuaded" to make propaganda broadcasts, in which activity he was later joined by the infamous Japanese-American "Tokyo Rose". After the war he was charged with treason but the charges were dropped. He was, however, stripped of his rank. See also Lot 653]

Dave Elsmore has a similar die proof in black in his exhibit. This is of a significantly larger impression - 27x53mm compared with the 19x37mm of this item - is in black and is noted as the "Only known die proof recorded". He also has an issued £500 in red, the same size as his proof. Was there another, smaller, issue?

**/* 1915-16 Kangaroos First Watermark 2½d indigo SG 74 complete forme of 30 [31-60] from the left-hand pane of Plate 2 with Thick Upper-Right Frame [31], Scratch over 'W' of 'TWO' [32], Heavy WA Coastline [43] & Retouch to U/R of Value Circle [55], sheet margins at left & at base with the 'JBC' Monogram, most units - including the six abc strips and the Monogram strip of 3 - are unmounted. Remarkably fresh and probably the finest of the few surviving formes of 30. Ex David Banwell: acquired at a Sydney auction for $9430 in 2007.

Only the initial shipment of blocks of 30 of the Kangaroo 2½d and the KGV 1d were despatched to Rabaul with the margins attached. Very few complete formes of either value have survived. All other formes of 30 had the margins removed in Melbourne.
