Jesus,
you were not spared the harsh decisions
and you did not run away
from the difficult choices we all have to make.
May this strengthen us when we are tempted to take short cuts,
putting off the pain,
avoiding the struggle.
Lord, you are able to keep us from falling;
fulfill in us your promise,
and present us faultless before the presence of your glory. Amen

CALL TO WORSHIP
HYMN OF PRAISE -No. 1 - No. 26– God of Creation, all powerful
1. God of creation, all powerful, all wise
Lord of the universe rich with surprise.
Maker, Sustainer, and Ruler of all,
we are Your children – You hear when we call.
2. God of the ages, through time’s troubled years
You are the One in whom history coheres;
nations and empires Your purpose fulfill,
moving in freedom, yet working Your will.
3. God of redemption, who wrought our rebirth,
called out Your church from the ends of the earth,
still You are Saviour – put darkness to flight;
overcome sin by salvation’s pure light!
4. God of Your people, Your Word still stands fast –
do for us now as You’ve done in the past!
Yours is the Kingdom – Your triumph we claim,
challenging evil in Jesus’ strong name.
5. God of our now, all our trust is in You
Covenant God, ever faithful and true;
Sovereign Creator, Redeemer and Lord
now and for ever Your name be adored! [Margaret Clarkson 1987: Tune – 10 10 10 10]
PRAYER OF ADORATION & THANKSGIVING
RESPONSIVE READING -
Leader: Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,
People: who, though he was in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
as something to be exploited, Leader: but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant,
being born in human likeness.
People: And being found in human, he humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death –
even death on a cross. Leader: Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him
the name that is above every name,
All: so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ
is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

HYMN OF MEDITATION – No. 2 – # 234 –When he was baptized in Jordan
1. When he was baptized in Jordan 3. During six long weeks of trial
Jesus knew his chosen role: evil masquerades as good;
ready now for time of testing points false roads to instant lordship
in the desert of the soul tempts him with the word of God.
2. Starved of bread to feed the body, 4. He attacks the great impostor;
starved of rest to feed the brain, evil shall not win this day!
starved of friends to feed the spirit, Ready now to serve his calling,
Jesus daily bore the strain. sets his face Jerusalem way.
5. In the hour of our temptation,
as we meet each vital choice,
make us wise and make us willing,
Lord of life, to heed your voice.

MESSAGE – Rev Dr Burchel K Taylor
HYMN OF RESPONSE - No. 3 - -#730 – Yield not to temptation
1. Yield not to temptation, for yielding is sin;
Each vict’ry will help you some other to win;
Fight manfully onward, dark passions subdue;
Look ever to Jesus, He’ll carry you through.
Refrain:
Ask the Savior to help you, comfort, strengthen, and keep you;
He is willing to aid you, He will carry you through.
2. Shun evil companions, bad language disdain,
God’s name hold in rev’rence, nor take it in vain;
Be thoughtful and earnest, kindhearted and true;
Look ever to Jesus, He will carry you through.
3. To him that o’ercometh, God giveth a crown,
Through faith we will conquer, though often cast down;
He who is our Savior, our strength will renew;
Look ever to Jesus, He’ll carry you through.

PRAYER LORD’S SUPPER
Song during Lord’s Supper. Lord, who throughout these forty days
1. Lord, who throughout these forty days for us did fast and pray,
teach us, O Christ, to mourn our sins and close by You to stay.
2. As you with Satan did contend, and did the victory win,
O give us strength in You to fight, in You to conquer sin.
3. And through these days of penitence, and through your passion-tide,
for-evermore, in life and death, O Christ, with us abide.
4. Abide with us, that through this life of doubts and hope and pain,
an Easter of unending joy we may at last attain!

Call to Worship
Hymn of Praise – # 63 - O worship the King, all glorious above
1. O worship the King, all glorious above, 3. Thy bountiful care what tongue can recite?
And gratefully sing His power and His love It breathes in the air, it shines in the light
Our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days, It streams from the hills, it descends to the plain
Pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise. And sweetly distills in the dew and the rain
2. O tell of His might, O sing of His grace 4. The earth, with its store of wonders untold,
Whose robe is the light, whose canopy space! Almighty, your power has founded of old,
His chariots of wrath the deep thunder-clouds form established it fast by a changeless decree,
And dark is His path on the wings of the storm. and round it has cast like a garment, the sea.
5. O Lord of all might, how boundless your love!
While angels delight to worship above,
the humbler creation, though feeble their ways,
with true adoration shall sing to your praise.

[NT] St Matt. 14: 13 - 21
Hymn - #224 - Lord Jesus, for my sake you come
1. Lord Jesus, for my sake you come 3. Are these the robes that make men proud
The Son of Man, and God most High is this the crown that you must wear?
You leave behind your Father’s home your face is set, your head is bowed,
To live and serve, to love and die. And silently you persevere.
2. Your eyes seek out our world’s distress 4. You never grasped at selfish gain,
Through insult, grief and agony; and yet your hands are marked with blood
They meet our tears with tenderness transfixed by nails, they cling in pain
Yet blaze upon our blasphemy. To sorrow on a cross of wood.
5. Lord Jesus, come to me anew;
Your hands, your eyes, your thoughts be mine,
Until I learn to love like you
And live on earth the life divine. [Michael Perry – 1942: Tune LM]

Hymn of Response - #639 – Son of God, eternal Saviour
1. Son of God, eternal Savior, 3. Come, O Christ, and reign among us
Source of life and truth and grace, King of Love and Prince of Peace
Son of Man, whose birth among us hush the storm of strife and passion
hallows all our human race, bid its cruel discords cease
Christ our Head, for all your people by your patient years of toiling
you have never ceased to plead, by your silent hours of pain,
fill us with your love and pity, quench our fevered thirst for pleasure
heal our wrongs and help our need.. shame our selfish greed of gain
As you, Lord, have lived for others 4. Son of God, eternal Saviour
so may we for others live; source of Life and truth and grace;
freely have your gifts been granted, Son of Man, whose birth among us
freely may your servants give. hallows all our human race
Yours the gold and yours the silver, you have prayed and you have purposed
thine the wealth of land and sea, that your people shall be one;
we but stewards of your riches, grant to us our hope’s fulfilment:
held in trust at your command. here on earth your will be done!
[E Lowry: Tune: 87 87 D]
