MEDITATION.
HINDRANCES TO MANIFESTING HIS KINGDOM: FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN.
Text: “---- And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul ----.” Matt. 10:28.
We welcome you to the continuation of a new topic in the broad theme, “Kingdom Manifestation. The simple
understanding of what hindrances is all about has been well spelt out during last Sunday Sermon. Just to add a
little to that, (1) Hindrances can mean a stumbling blocks, that preventing someone from advancing or
progressing (2) It can be a cog or notch on the rim of a wheel.
“Fear” can be perceived as the feeling caused by the nearness of danger or the possibility of something bad that
is about happening. It means an unpleasant emotion caused by threat of danger, pain or harm.
Having a closer look, the word fear is in four stages.
1. There is Holy fear – This comes from the believers’ awareness of a living God. Jer. 32:40; Prov. 8:13.
2. There is slavish fear – This is felt by those who reject God. Acts 24:25. 3. There is fear of people – This may be due to respect of them. Rom. 13:7 or it may be blind dread.
Prov. 29:25. 4. There may be an object or unexpected danger – The unknown, such was the one Jesus called the
attention of His disciples to in Matt. 10:16ff. Jesus allayed the disciples’ fear of the impending suffering, tribulation and possibly untimely death as they were
going on a mission.
Jesus new from the unset of their mission what was lying ahead such that the Pharisees will deliver them to the
councils, they will flog them in their synagogues. They will drag them to the governors etc. In our world today
many are those who are in the mission fields that have met their untimely death. Many are in an unpleasant
emosion because of what may happened next that they don’t know or envisage.
We are facing so many challenges, dreadful occurrences, dangers here and there on daily basis. Such as fear of
been infected with Corona – Virus Pandemic, in the far North of Nigeria, the fear of Boko-haram threats. The
threats of bandits, the fear of insurgents, in the south, Kidnappers, Fulani Cattle rustlers and ritualists are the
order of the days.
Like in the time of the disciples, Jesus is wavering olive branch to us today to allay our fear. He is reminding us,
“have no fear of them ----.” Matt. 10:26a&28.
The same God that assured the Israelites that they should not fear while in the land of Egypt en route the land of
Canaan is still our God today. Exo. 14:13. Let your trust and hope of the unknown tomorrow be centered in
Him. Stop grumbling, stop complaining, be steadfast in your faith and be focused.
God who does lead Israelites forward against apparent impassable barriers, who opened doors previously shut
against His people is our God. Num. 14:9. Be reminded that “The fear of man lays a snear----.” Prov. 29:25. Be
sure that, “The fear of the Lord leads to life----.” Prov. 19:23. Hold on to the words of the Psalmist in Ps. 46:1-3
you will have no fear of the unknown.
Remain Safe and Saved.

Toss'd with rough winds, and faint with fear
1. Toss'd with rough winds, and faint with fear, Above the tempest, soft and clear,
What still small accents greet mine ear? ---
'Tis I; be not afraid.
2. 'Tis I, who washed thy spirit white; 'Tis I, who gave thy blind eyes sight;
'Tis I, thy Lord, thy life, thy light:
'Tis I; be not afraid
3. These raging winds, this surging sea,
Have spent their deadly force on Me:
They bear no breath of wrath to thee:
'Tis I; be not afraid.
4. This bitter cup, I drank it first;
To thee it is no draught accurst;
The hand that gives it thee is pierced:
' Tis I; be not afraid.
5. Mine eyes are watching by thy bed,
Mine arms are underneath thy head,
My blessing is around thee shed:
'Tis I, be not afraid.
6. When on the other side thy feet
Shall rest mid thousand welcomes sweet,
One well-known Voice thy heart shall greet,
'Tis I; be not afraid.
Begone unbelief
1. Begone unbelief,
My Savior is near,
And for my relief
Will surely appear:
By prayer let me wrestle,
And he will perform,
With Christ in the vessel,
I smile at the storm.
2. Tho' dark be my way,
Since he is my guide,
'Tis mine to obey,
'Tis his to provide:
To' cisterns be broken,
And creatures all fail,
The word he has spoken
Shall surely prevail.
3. His love in time past
Forbids me to think
He'll leave me at last
In trouble to sink'
Each sweet Ebenezer
I have in review
4. Determined to save,
He watched o'er my path
When Satan's blind slave,
I sported with death;
And can he have taught me
To trust in his name,
And thus far have brought me
To put me to shame?
5. Why should I complain
Of want or distress
Temptation or pain?
He told me no less;
The heirs of salvation,
I knew from his word,
Through much tribulation,
Must follow their Lord.
6. How bitter the cup,
No heart can conceive,
Which he drunk quite up,
That sinners might live!
His way was much rougher,
And darker than mine;
Did Jesus thus suffer,
And shall I repine?
7. Since all that I meet
Shall work for my good,
The bitter is sweet,
The medicine is food;
Though painful at present,
'Twill cease before long,
And then, oh how pleasant,
The conqueror's song!

TRINITY NINE
SUNDAY, 9TH AUGUST, 2020.
THEME: In The Name Of Jesus Christ
SUB-THEME: The Divinity of Christ (4)
TOPIC: His Ascension
TEXTS: John 3:13; Acts 1:1-11.
AIMS: i. To teach about the ascension of Jesus Christ,
ii. To confirm Jesus Christ as the only one who died,
resurrected and ascended into heaven
iii. To explain more on the purpose of His ascension.
Introduction: At the beginning of his treatise, Saint
Luke addressed Theophilus as 'most excellent'. Luke
1:3. Theophilus might have been a Roman official who
had already embraced the Christian faith or was even
simply a Christian middle-class Roman citizen who
gave Luke the opportunity to write a complete account
of Jesus and the early Church. However, Luke's
account was to prove to the Roman government
through this eminent Roman politician that the works
of Jesus Christ and those of His disciples were never a
subterfuge to the Roman Government. The record by
Saint Luke proves beyond any doubt the authenticity of
Jesus Christ's ascension into heaven. Moreover, other
Biblical passages have similarity narrated the purpose
of Christ's ascension into heaven.
Study Guide/Questions:
1. From biblical and life's experience mention
someone apart from Jesus Christ, who was dead,
buried, resurrected and ascended into heaven. John
3:13
2. Who is the only person who can ascend into the
heavens? Prov. 30:4; John 3:13; 6:33, 38, 62.
3. Why did Jesus Christ ascend to heaven?
Rom 8:34; Eph 4:8; Col 2:15; Heb 9:24-25.
4. From today's study, how important is Christ's
ascension to you? John 14:2- 3; 26-27; 16:7; Rom
8:24; 1Jn 2:1
Conclusion: Only the one who descended from heaven
can ascend into heaven. The ascension of Jesus Christ
forever remains one of the mysterious supernatural
event that signifies Him as the Lord of lords and King
of kings.
Food For Thought: Only He who descended to defeat
death is able to ascend to reign forever.
Memory Verse: John 3:13 "No one has scended to
heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is,
the Son of Man who is in heaven”.
