INTRODUCTION TheSpanishLanguageInternationalFieldSeminaronProtectedAreaManagementisanintensivetrainingcoursedesignedformid-levelprofessionalandtechnicalpersonnelworkingtoimprovethemanagementofprotectedareasintheircountries.ThecoursehasbeenofferedannuallyforovertwentyyearsbyColoradoStateUniversity’sCenterforProtectedAreaManagementincollaborationwiththeUSForestServiceInternationalProgramsandvariousotherdonors.Thecourse,nowcelebratingits25th(silver)anniversary,isofferedbyColoradoStateUniversity’sCenterforProtectedAreaManagementincollaborationwiththeUSForestServiceInternationalProgramsandvariousotherdonors.

Thecourse,heldinSpanish,isbasedonthecampusofColoradoStateUniversity(CSU)inFortCollins,Colorado,nexttothemajesticRockyMountains.However,mostofthecourseisspentinthefieldvisitingprotectedareasinawiderangeofhabitattypesmanagedbyfederal,state,andlocalgovernments,non-governmentalorganizationsandprivatelandowners.Highlightsincludemulti-daycampingtripstoRooseveltNationalForest,RockyMountainNationalParkandDinosaurNational

Monument.Theseoutingsinvolvemoderatetostrenuousexerciseasparticipantstraveltobothhighlyvisitedparksandremotenaturalareasonfoot,usingpackanimalsandbyraft.Thecourseprovidesparticipantswithunparalleledopportunitiestolearnaboutawidearrayofmanagementtechniquesandapproaches,exploredthroughthevarietyofprotectedareasmanagementcategoriesandgovernancetypesdiscussedandvisited.

COURSE OVERVIEWThecourseincludesareviewoftheprinciples,concepts,methodsandtechniquesofprotectedareaplanningandmanagement,combinedwithastrongemphasisonpracticalexercisesandcasestudiesfocusedonemergingtrendsandissuesinprotectedareamanagementsharedbydevelopingcountriesandtheUnitedStates.Workintheclassroomfocusesonglobalprotectedareasmanagementandthespecialchallengesparticipantsfaceintheirhomecountries.

Approximately70%ofthetrainingprogramisconductedinthefield,providingabroadrangeofpracticalexercisestoequipparticipantswiththeconcepts,methods,toolsandtechniquesrequiredtoimprovemanagementoftheprotectedareaswheretheywork.Fieldtripsexposeparticipantstoarangeofgovernance,financingandstaffingapproachesinbothstrictlyprotectedandmultipleuseprotectedareasthatdemonstratediversemanagementsystemsthathaveevolvedovermore

thanacenturyofexperience.Emphasisisplacedonstrategicpartnershipsandparticipatorymanagementinvolvinggovernmentagencies,academia,non-profits,landowners,communities,andthebusinesssector.Therolesofoutdoorrecreation,interpretation,ecotourism,environmentaleducation,volunteerismandcitizenscienceinpromotingsupportforconservationarestressedthroughoutthecourse.Otherhighlightedtopicsincludethevalueofprotectedareasintermsofecosystemservices,suchaswaterprovision,climatechangeanddisastermitigation,andinfosteringsustainablelivelihoodsandpromotingpublichealth.InstructorsarefluentinSpanishwithampleexperienceworkingindevelopingregions.Participantsdevelopactionplansforapplyinglessonslearneduponreturntotheirowncountries.

COURSE COSTThecoursefeeincludesregistrationandtuition,coursematerials,lodging,mealsandtransportationcostsinFortCollinsandonfieldtrips,healthandaccidentinsur-ance,andcampingequipment.Airtravelcostsandvisaandpassportfeesarenotincludedinthecoursefee.Werecommendparticipantsbringatleast$300topurchasepersonalequipmentforfieldtripsandforoutofpocketcosts.
