Bring me a small cake..."(1 Kings 17:11b)
A couple ofdays ago (actually Juneihefirst readingfor the day
was the scene with theprophetElijah beingsent to the widow atZarephath. God promises thewidow, through Elijah, that "thejarofflour would not run empty, northe jug ofoil run dry." (1 Kings17:14bc) The widow is afraid thatsheand her son will die if she servesElijah. His requestfor a "smallcake" (as one translation says) is, infact, a majorforeshadowing to theEucharist. It may not be the verystory we hear in this weekend'sGospel, but it's very steeped in ourpresent day theology of theEucharist (falling just short ofspeaking to the Real Presence).
The Solemnity of the Most SacredBody and Blood ofour LordJesusChrist has been celebrated over time
with Eucharistic Adoration, processions with the BlessedSacrament (some ofwhich gothrough small neighborhoods), and,is most certainly shown thereverence our Lord deserves by theuse of incense. In some countries, the Eucharist might be taken inprocessionfor miles at times. Andwhy not? Is this not Jesus ourSavior in theflesh? This IS theKing of the Universe. This IS theLamb ofGod!
The story referenced above speaks tous ofGod's abundancefrom a smallsacrificial offering. When we receivethe Eucharist, we aregiven of theSacrifice, and in return we givethanks through our response offaith. The widow and herson arefedfor ayear because of their kindness toElijah. When we receive theEucharist, we may befedfor ourlifetime, but we should want to comebackfrequently to remain nourishedand grow strongerfor the life Christhas promised. Is that enoughreasoning? Sure it is, for now. It'scertainly not exhaustive.
Many in the Church still strugglewith whether or not the Real
Presence is the truth. Ifyou believeJesus is the Truth, then that shouldbe enough. I hope so.
Sincerely,
Fr. Mike

As disciples of Jesus, we are calledto lead holy lives and invite others
to join us. Living a stewardshiplifestyle, being grateful andgenerous with our gifts, serves atwofold purpose. One, it helps
build God's kingdom here on earth. Two, it is a road map to Heaven.Let's help each other get there!

That Father Mike has written a book? He has, and it is now available forpurchase. It is titled We don't live in Eden (But we can once oRain—BELIEVE ME)
Here's what Father has to say about his book:"The challense I think I face in writing this book is going to be that I don'twant anyone who reads it to think that I am whining about my ministry asa Catholic priest. What I hope to accomplish by writing the book is to help educateall of society about our life." I knew that when I embarked upon this writing thisbook, the topic would be a living and breathing piece that changes constantly. Noone day is the same as the next, and rarely is any day the same as any other.Ministry changes and challenges because Cod's people change - their hopes, needs, dreams, and their relationship with God amongst other things. This book is not meant to be definitive in nature by any stretch. It's my experience and my vision. You may get to know a little more about me through some journal entries I've included. I truly hopethat those who read it will grow in their appreciation for the Catholic Church and remember to prayfor all priests - those who have gone before us, all present priests, and the hopeful priests for thefuture of the Church - the Church which is one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic. Enjoy!Fr. Mike's book is available at any of these links:http://www.barnesandnoble.com/s?store=allproducts&kevword=We+don't+live+in+Eden

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,June 22, 2014
On Easter Sunday 2013, Pope Francis encouraged each personto be a witness of charity. The Holy Father has continued to remindeach of us through his words and actions that we must serve ourbrothers and sisters in order to be true disciples of Christ.
In dioceses where many are dependent on the Church forsocial and pastoral support, as well as regions where Catholics arepersecuted for their faith, His Holiness extends his charity to thosemost in need.
This year's Peter's Pence Collection provides each of us theopportunity to be a witness of charity. In addition, our financialsupport of this annual collection will assist Pope Francis instrengthening dioceses, religious orders and struggling communitiesof faith. I thank you for your generosity.
May Our Lord continue to bless you and your loved ones as youshare your faith and charity in your parish, the Archdiocese ofChicago and throughout the Universal Church. You and those you loveare in my prayers; please keep me in yours.

OnEaster Sunday 2013, Pope Francis encouraged each person to beawitness of charity. He said, "Let us be renewed by God's mercy ...and let us become agents of this mercy, channels through which God
can water the earth, protect all creation, and make justice and peace flourish."Pope Francis has continued to remind us through his actions that we mustserve our brothers and sisters in order to be true disciples of Christ.
