About BRC The British Retail Consortium is the lead trade association representing retailers from the large multiples and department stores throughto independents, selling a wide selection of products through centre of town, out of town, rural and virtual stores.

In 1998 the British Retail Consortium, responding to industry needs, developed and introduced the BRC Food Technical Standard to beused to evaluate manufacturers of retailers own brand food products.

In a short space of time, this Standard became invaluable to other organisations across the sector. It is regarded as the benchmark forbest practice in the food industry. Its use outside the UK has seen it evolve into a Global Standard used not just to assess retailersuppliers, but as a framework companies have based their supplier assessment programmes and manufacture of branded products

A number of UK and Scandinavian retailers will only consider business with suppliers who have gained certification to appropriate BRCGlobal Standard. In 2002 the BRC published the first issue of The Packaging Standard (now in its 2nd Edition), followed by ConsumerProducts Standard in August 2003.
