TRANSCRIPT
Congregation Shirat Hayam will hold three Town Meetings in October to discuss shifting to a voluntary dues model called “T’rumot HaLev / Gifts of the Heart” starting next spring. The proposed pledge model will include Membership, High Holy Day seats, Lev donation and CJE (Hebrew School) tuition.
“This is the biggest transformation of Shirat Hayam since the merger in 2005,” Rabbi Michael Ragozin said.
As of 2017, over 50 synagogues were identified nationally as operating with a voluntary commitment model. The results are positive. Congregations report an annual average increase of 3.6% in membership and 1.8% in pledge revenue, according to Rabbi Michael. “In addition to these business considerations, congregations with an Annual Pledge laud the profoundly positive impact on congregational culture and values,” he added.
Steve Solomon, co-chair of the Voluntary Dues Committee, said there will be an
extended feedback period this fall with Town Meetings set for Wednesday, October 24 at 10 am and 7:30 pm and Sunday, October 28 at 10 am.
“We want to be sure Shirat members have a clear understanding of what will be a major shift in the way CSH is run and a chance to express their concerns and provide feedback. We want transparency of what will be necessary for us to thrive going forward,” Solomon explained.
The Town Meetings will address: the current state of CSH, why this dues model is the key to CSH’s future, and what the dues model would look like. The meetings will include ample opportunities for questions and feedback.
“We understand this is a huge cultural shift. We hope that congregants know their feelings and opinions are heard and valued and they come away believing this initiative is in the best interest of CSH to thrive into the future,” Solomon added.

NEW WAVE
Hebrew has but one word, avoda, for work and worship.
- HuGO BERGMAnn
Starting with the High Holy Days and culminating with a joyful, spirited Simchat
Torah, we’ve engaged in a lot of worship. now the work of the year begins. What can we expect in the upcoming year?
The midrash teaches that the Torah served as a blueprint for God’s creation (Bereshit Rabbah 1:1). In other words, in order to create this universe, God needed a plan. So too for us. The blueprint for Shirat Hayam, our spiritual community, is our CSH Vision Statement (see page 3).
How will we transform this vision into a reality? To begin, entering a congregation as a clergyperson is no small task. Building upon the depth, feeling, and vibe of the High Holy Days, Cantor Alty and I will continue to focus our efforts on delivering a fulfilling spiritual experience — one that you look forward to each Shabbat, one to which you invite your friends, one that your children want to attend with you.
Within the CJE (our youth educational program) we have plans for major advancements. We are launching Darkeinu, our teen initiative. For grades Pre-K through 1, Janis is implementing the Hebrew through Movement curriculum and in Grades 4 through 6, she is launching Shalom Learning, an online learning platform. Additionally, we are thrilled to welcome an inclusion coordinator, Susan Yackalow, to the CJE staff to make sure students of all abilities and learning styles have a positive learning experience.
On the operations side, constant work is being done behind the scenes. In the upcoming year, one public enhancement that Anna Hathaway,
our business manager, is investigating is a revamped website, including online registration and payments, as well as mobile friendly viewing.
We are also blessed with a wise and committed core of volunteers. Alan Sidman and his team have a robust schedule of social activities for the Men’s Club. Michele Tamaren and Amanda Clayman continue to lead Shir Lanu, advancing inclusion at Shirat Hayam. Steve Solomon is co-leader (with me) of the
effort to implement T’rumot HaLev, our Annual Membership Pledge model. Bethany Rotidi and Karen Madorsky spearhead Shir Chesed, a revitalized effort to create a culture of caring at Shirat Hayam, and Bob Powell, Maria Samiljan, and Anne Selby head our Interfaith Leadership Task Force.
And that’s just a start. Many more individuals — board members and volunteers — help us flourish as a community through their ongoing commitments. Please forgive me for the names and initiatives I’ve omitted.
This robust team of volunteers and professionals is working hard to make our vision a reality. If you haven’t already, I invite you to find and deepen your connection at
Shirat Hayam. From learning to prayer, service to social gathering, come join us this fall.
Warmly,
Rabbi Michael

It was a very meaningful experience for me to pray with all of you over the High Holidays. Our hearts and intentions felt aligned under the leadership of Rabbi Michael and his beautiful prayer, “Kavanot”.
The melodies I’ve sung a cappella over the past 20 years as a High Holy Day Cantor and the new songs and arrangements I wrote for this year came to life with the stirring support of our five piece ensemble, Amen Chorus, Chai notes and soloists Ann Segal and Sarah nissenbaum. The blending of very traditional “nusach” prayer modes and congregational songs with new melodies and rhythms was intentional. I’m so grateful you afforded me the opportunity to share this part of me with you.
The following story of a revered early Hasidic leader helps explain why I chose this path:
“When my master’s master’s master felt the need to especially connect with God, he would go to a sacred spot in a certain sacred forest and sing a special sacred melody. My master’s master said he was no longer able to find the sacred spot, but that he would still go to the sacred forest and sing the sacred melody. My master told me he could not even find the sacred forest, but he would still sing the sacred melody. And I’m telling you,” the Hasidic leader continued, “that I don’t know the sacred melody, but I can still at least tell the story.”
For me, this story is saying that the idea that only one particular melody sung in one particular spot in one particular forest can be replaced by a conviction that closeness to God could be achieved anywhere and through any number of sacred melodies. When we come to shul on the High Holy Days, we want an authentic Jewish experience. We want a connection to our ancestors all the way back to Sinai if the Rabbi and Cantor can take us there.
“Well,” we ask, “is that mystical, traditional melody we use on Rosh Hashanah from Sinai? How about this passionate Yom Kippur nusach, that chant, or cantillation- is it from Sinai also? How about this new lilting, Latin rhythm? that soaring Middle Eastern melody? And the new African groove? Sinai too?”
Any song, text, photo, or slice of nature that makes one feel connected to the source…..then that’s from Sinai, as far as I’m concerned. What then is Sinai if not the source, or another word for the source: God, Adonai, Elohim?
May we continue to find and share sources of inspiration with each other. May we continue to create a spiritually engaging community of seekers at all levels of Jewish knowledge and experience. May we allow ourselves to live in the light of joyous Judaism.
B’shalom,
Cantor Alty

Every month, The new Wave spotlights a congregant as a way to help us get to know each other better by putting a face with a name. For Herb Goldberg,
shofar blowing is a family affair. He fills in the details here:
What was your Jewish upbringing? Were you very involved in synagugue as a child?
My parents kept kosher in the house and I attended Lynn Hebrew School on Blossom St. until my Bar Mitzvah. We attended synagogue at Chevra Tillum on Shepard St. on the High Holy Days, but not any other time.
When did you start coming to morning minyan on a regular basis?
I started coming to minyan morning and night at Temple Beth El after my wife, Jan, passed away in December, 1999. After the 11 months, I just continued.
When did you learn to play the shofar? What drew you to it?
Cantor Sarah Gellar led the Sunday morning minyan at Temple Beth El. The first day of Elul 2000 was a Sunday. She asked who would like to try sounding the shofar? We all just sat there. Then she asked who played a musical instrument in high school? I timidly raised my hand and when I told her I played cornet and baritone horn, she said “get up here.” After a few instructions, I got a sound. The next morning at minyan, Rabbi Weinsberg asked me to continue, which I did for the rest of the month, becoming the “echo” at the back of the sanctuary for Rosh Hashanah. (I used the temple’s shofar.)
My grandson, Jason Gladstone, has been blowing shofar since he was three years old. He couldn’t even lift it, but sat on the steps with the shofar on the floor and gave a “blooze.” Grandson Jordie has his own shofar too.
Some call you the “Miles Davis of shofar blowers.” Tell me the story of your shofar.
My daughter Stefanie threw an un-surprise party for me on my 65th birthday. The invitation said no gifts, but some close (and determined) friends
and family asked what I wanted. Stef said: my own shofar. They took me on a “mystery” ride to the Israel Bookstore in Boston, where the salesperson left me in a room with hundreds of shofars. After about an hour, I knew which one I liked best.
What else are you involved in at CSH? How long have you been a member?
We joined TBE around 1975 and I was on the TBE board during the merger talks. At CSH, I am involved with the Brotherhood and was honored as Mensch of the Year.
