I know many have been traveling to fun, exciting places and many are visiting family or enjoying their welcome visits here in Hampton Lake! Don’t you love it? These experiences enrich our lives and provide variety, yet we can also be happy when our lives return to “normal,” because normal here is so good! President’s Message

I hope this newsletter finds our members doing well! I know many have been traveling to fun, exciting places and many are visiting family or enjoying their welcome visits here in Hampton Lake! Don’t you love it? These experiences enrich our lives and provide variety, yet we can also be happy when our lives return to “normal,” because normal here is so good! Time spent outdoors, being active, cooking, eating, sharing, relaxing, help-ing a neighbor, working in the garden, attending a concert . . . all of the normal stuff. . . how blessed we are!

As the month turns to August, our HLWG calendar begins anew. Our first General Mem-bership Meeting will be Thursday, August 24 at 6:30 pm. Our business meeting is open to all without a reservation. We hope to see many current HLWG members as well as welcome prospective members! The business portion of the meeting will be only as long as necessary, dealing with annual budget, bylaw amendments, our HLWG incorporation status and the calendar of upcoming events. Come find out how our organization works and what is coming up!

Following the General Meeting, our President Elect, Sally Roach, has arranged a yummy experience for your enjoyment. As she says, “Two words....chocolate and wine...need I say more?” If you haven’t sent in your reservation for the social program yet, please do so soon! Space is limited so make the commitment and put it on your calendar. Details came to you in an email on July 24 and are reprinted at the end of this NEWS.

Betty Heath-Camp, our HLWG Advisor, wants you to remember that once we sell out of our stock of special HLWG notecards, featuring the sunset over the lake, we will not be printing more. And we will be having a BOGO sale on them at the August 24 meeting. Now who doesn’t love a sale? So remember to bring a check or cash when you come.

I’ve met some lovely new women in our community at the fitness center, playing pickleball or around the neighborhood. When you meet someone new, please think of letting Naomi Morris, our Vice President of Membership know, so she can invite them to our next New Member Social.

Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Meet Linda Meacham, HLWG’s new VP of Interest Groups. NEWS editor, Carol Matarese, met with Linda for the August Featured Member article.

Featured Member

Meet Linda Meacham, HLWG’s new VP of Interest Groups. Linda, her husband Bill, and their 7-year old Maine Coon cat, Mitty, moved to Hampton Lake in 2015 from New York.

CM: So, how did you and Bill discover Hampton Lake?

LM: In 2008-09, we decided to start looking for a place to retire to. We had friends also looking who had visited Hilton Head many times. We basically followed them and signed up for a Sneak a Peek in Myrtle Beach and Hampton Lake. Myrtle Beach was a little too busy for us, but we liked the casual atmosphere at Hampton Lake. We weren’t sure we wanted to be this far south, but soon after we came back to visit Hampton Lake on our own. We met with a realtor and while taking a boat ride I caught a fish-- we were sold! We built our first house in 2010, which we ended up renting and then selling. We built a second home and moved in full-time in 2015.

CM: What do you like about living here?

LM: Growing up in New England, I like that there are trees and some change in the sea-sons. I love the nature, the casual feeling here and being able to bike, walk, and go to the gym or Backwater Bill’s without having to leave the development. There is so much to do and see in the area.

CM: Where in New England did you grow up?

LM: Bill and I grew up in a small town in Massachusetts called Monson. We have known each other since first grade and started dating our senior year. After getting married we moved to Connecticut and then Monroe, NY. We’ve been married 41 years and have a married son, who lives in Utah, and a married daughter who ended up moving to Bluffton.

CM: In addition to raising 2 children, what did you do?

LM: My first job was working in the office and on the sales floor of my parents’ hardware store. I learned a lot in that job and loved it. After they sold the store I opened my own gift shop. Eight years later, after the birth of my second child, I sold the shop, became a stay-at-home mom and helped my husband with his small tax business. When Bill’s job moved us to NY, I found work at our local church school as an assistant teacher and eventually ended up in the office as Administrative Assistant. After 12 years, when my now two college-aged athletes began to travel with their teams, I retired. It was a full-time job running the family and a student house we owned in upper NY. In 2002, I became a Longaberger Home Consultant and have been for the last 15 years.

CM: What do you do in your spare time?

LM: I love to do a lot of things--painting, sewing, crafts, decorating, gardening, fishing and boating. Decorative painting is my favorite. I am a member of the Society of Decora-tive Painting and a member of Orange Blossom Decorative Painters in New York. And I co-chair the HLWG Crafts Group.

CM: Tell us a little about your new role as VP of HLWG Interest Groups.

LM: Well it is a very new role for me so I am still learning. I hope to assist the Interest Groups wherever they need me. To have HLWG we all must help in some way.

CM: Thank you, Linda, for talking with us and congrats on your new position!

New Member Spotlight

Please give a warm welcome to the women who have joined the HLWG this month:

• Leslie Bellamy and her husband Sam moved to Hampton Lake from Denville, NJ. They have also lived in Philadelphia, Atlanta, Louisville, Cleveland, Toledo, Buffalo, Lansing and Dearborn Michigan. Leslie is interested in golf, all things arty, crafts, sewing and socializing. They found Hampton Lake via the website Southeast Discov-ery. Sam did a lot of research of the Carolinas and when they did a trip up and down the coast they fell in love with Hampton Lake. Leslie and Sam live on Hampton Lake Drive.

• Kathi Viehman grew up in Maryland and moved to South Central Pennsylvania in 1993. She and her husband, Ralph, vacationed on Hilton Head Island for the first time last summer and knew they belonged here. They found Hampton Lake, moved into their home in May and couldn’t be happier. Kathi loves to read, walk, garden and decorate. She also enjoys preserving memories by creating scrapbooks. Kathi and Ralph live on Lake Bluff Drive.

A heartfelt welcome to all HLWG new members

Scrapbooking GroupThe Scrapbooking Interest Group is on summer vacation!! We are all busy taking more photos to scrap!!!

We will return again in September to our monthly meetings where we work on our scrap-ping projects! We scrap both traditionally (with paper, cutters and tape rollers) and digi-tally (on our computers). We would love to have you join our group in the fall. If you have projects you need to work on and need a little motivation, making a commitment to meet monthly really helps you achieve your goal. We also invite all paper crafters to join us and work on their projects with a great group of ladies here in our community.

We meet the 2nd Tuesday of the month from 9 am – noon in FishTales. If you’d like to join us or would like more information contact Judy Yox.

At our August meeting, we will be collecting supplies for the Bluffton Boys and Girls Club's ongoing programs for members ages 6-18. The Club currently serves over 600 local children and teens. They have asked us for items for their gift closet and for school supplies to be used by the members. Gift Closet: The Club recognizes and rewards ongoing achievements by the boys and girls and celebrates special occasions like member birthdays. They like to surprise them with small gifts such as age-appropriate movies, games, books, music CDs, toys, art and craft supplies, small Lego or Hexbug sets, inexpensive jewelry or toiletry items, spinners, glitter glue sets, etc. School Supplies: The Club would like items such as wide line filler paper, construction paper, highlighters, washable markers and crayons, color pencils and pens, art supplies, glue and scissors are also needed. Many students do homework after school at the center or may need replacement supplies that their parents cannot provide. For more information or if you wish to make a donation but cannot attend the meeting, please contact one of the committee members listed below. Thank you so much for your support.
