2. O.T. Model Of Evangelism1. God’s Plan of Restoration Began with a Man – Abraham

a. A covenant of grace was established and promises made Gen 12v2-3 b. The nations of the earth would be blessed through Abraham’s seed. c. Abraham’s people were not singled out for

blessing to the exclusion of the other nations but to exemplify and proclaim the mission of God to the Gentiles. Cf. Deut. 7.6-8 God did not set his love upon them because they were better than any other nation

2. God’s Missionary Nation - Israel

a. God delivered Israel from Egypt to serve or worship Him [ Ex. 3:12, 8:1, 20, 9:1, 13, 10:3].

b. She was told to be a missionary nation in order that the earth would be “filled with the glory of the Lord” [Num. 14v21].

c. How would Israel carry out her missionary task? By becoming a holy nation, a kingdom of priests cf. Ex. 19v4-6

2. God’s Missionary Nation - Israel

d. Her holiness of life should have drawn the Gentiles to God. [Ps. 87]

Israel would then point to God as the author of salvation Ps. 67.2. When the nations saw the blessing of God resting upon Israel, would then believe in God and be saved.

3. Israel Failed in her Missionary Task

a. However, Israel repelled rather than attracted the nations. Superiority replaces humility and legalism replaces grace.

Jonah’s attitude in his day reflects his nation’s attitude.

Israel by her unholy life caused the nations to ridicule her God.

3. Israel Failed in her Missionary Task

b. Despite Israel’s failure both Zechariah and Malachi anticipate a day when Gentiles and Israel will live together in peace. The whole earth will be engaged in the worship of the God of Israel [ Zech. 2:11; Mal 1:11]

c. God will get his picture back. God had intended to restore the entire earth through Israel but they failed him. But their failure did not frustrate him!

Lessons We Can Learn.1. God has a passionate desire for fellowship with man.2. God is determined to restore our broken fellowship.

3. A person’s nationality, social status, religion, culture are not legitimate barriers to evangelism

4. God uses men as instruments of evangelism.

5. The holiness and integrity of our lives effects our ability to communicate.

6. God’s choice of us for this task should produce humility not superiority

7. If we fail God will pass us by and find others to accomplish his task.
