SEPTEMBER Program Guide 2017

A LANDMARK DOCUMENTARY EVENT

THERE IS NO SINGLE TRUTH IN WAR

Take an unconventional look at the fiercely independent filmmaking style that emerged in the late 1980s-90s, sparked by the Oscar-nominated filmmaker of “Boyhood,” “Slacker” and “Dazed and Confused.” Features never-before-seen footage and interviews.

Discover the art, life and enduring impact of Tyrus Wong, the renowned Chinese American painter behind “Bambi” and “Rebel Without a Cause,” who once exhibited with Picasso and Matisse, via new and never-before-seen interviews, movie clips and art.

September 4, The Grown Ups In a school for individuals with Down Syndrome, four middle-aged friends yearn for a life of greater autonomy in a society that marginalizes them as disabled. Get a humorous and at times tragic look at the limbo of conscious adults.

September 11, My Love, Don't Cross That River Spouses 89-year-old Kang Gye-yeol and 98-year-old Jo Byeong-man have shared a home for 76 years. While they spend every day together like a newlywed couple, they now must face the reality of their aging romance.

Mondays @ 9PM

Friday, September 1 @ 9PM

Friday, September 8 @ 9PM

Explore an urgent wake-up call about the national threat posed by Alzheimer’s disease. This powerful documentary illuminates the impending social and economic crisis for America unless a cure for Alzheimer’s is found.

It's widely accepted that most Americans are living decades longer than any generation in human history. This longevity has far-reaching implications for society, and experts, policy makers and the general population are only just beginning to grapple with how to reframe our thoughts on aging. What does it mean for communities, programs and policies, and how we live and work?

Thursday, September 7 @ 9PM Thursday, September 14 @ 9PM

Enjoy two iconic works from the country's premier Latino dance company: CARMEN.maquia, a modern take on Bizet's passionate opera, and Club Havana, a virtuosic reimagining of a sizzling nightclub by Cuban-born choreographer Pedro Ruiz.

Friday, September 15 @ 9PM ON TWO FRONTS Latinos & Vietnam

Friday, September 22

@ 9PMExamine the Latino experience during a war that placed its heaviest burden on working-class youth and their communities. Framing the documentary are memoirs of two siblings, Everett and Delia Alvarez, who stood on opposite sides of the Vietnam War, one as a POW and the other protesting at home.

The Vietnam War is a 10 part, 18-hour documentary film series directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. An immersive 360-degree narrative, the series tells the epic story of the Vietnam War as it has never before been told on film. The Vietnam War features testimony from nearly 80 witnesses, including many Americans who fought in the war and others who opposed it, as well as Vietnamese combatants and civilians from both the winning and losing sides.

Sunday, September 17 - Thursday, September 21 & Sunday, September 24 - Thursday, September 28 @ 7PM

KPTS - Channel 8 is proud to partner with the Wichita Public Library to host a screening of The Vietnam War: A Film by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. KPTS reached out to Kansas veteran John Musgrave who is featured in the documentary, and he graciously agreed to attend and speak at this event. Prior to the screening, Musgrave will do interviews with local media. From 6 to 6:20 p.m., he will be interviewed by Pilar Pedraza, host of Kansas Week on KPTS, Musgrave will discuss his service during the Vietnam war and what it was like to be interviewed for the documentary. Following the 1-hour screening, Musgrave will be available for questions.

Sept. 17, Déjà Vu With the Cold War intensifying, Vietnam is divided in two at Geneva. Communists in the north aim to reunify the country, while America supports Ngo Dinh Diem’s untested regime in the south.

Sept. 18, Riding the Tiger President Kennedy inspires idealistic young Americans to serve their country and wrestles with how deeply to get involved in South Vietnam.

Sept. 19, The River Styx With South Vietnam in chaos, hardliners in Hanoi seize the initiative and send combat troops to the south, accelerating the insurgency.

Sept. 20, Resolve As an antiwar movement builds back home, hundreds of thousands of soldiers and Marines discover that the war they are being asked to fight in Vietnam is nothing like their fathers’ war.

Sept. 21, This Is What We Do Hanoi lays plans for a massive surprise offensive, and the Johnson Administration reassures the American public that victory is in sight.

Sept. 24, Things Fall Apart The president decides not to run again and the country is staggered by assassinations and unrest.

Sept. 25, The Veneer of Civilization Public support for the war declines, and American men of draft age face difficult decisions and wrenching moral choices.

Sept. 26, The History of the World As news breaks of an unthinkable massacre committed by American soldiers, the public debates the rectitude of the war, while an incursion into Cambodia reignites antiwar protests with tragic consequences.

Sept. 27, A Disrespectful Loyalty South Vietnamese forces fighting on their own in Laos suffer a terrible defeat. Massive U.S. airpower makes the difference in halting an unprecedented North Vietnamese offensive.

Sept. 28, The Weight of Memory While the Watergate scandal rivets Americans’ attention and forces President Nixon to resign, the Vietnamese continue to savage one another in a brutal civil war.

PUBLIC SCREENING Monday, September 11, 6PM - 7:30PM Wichita Public Library, 223 S. Main St., 3rd Floor

Thursday, November 9 Holiday Inn Wichita East @ 6PM
