There’s a magic word…

Page 3: There’s a magic word…

…it’s not very big…

Page 4: There’s a magic word…

…but it is very important…

Page 5: There’s a magic word…

…because it has special powers.

Page 6: There’s a magic word…

I can’t run very far.

I haven’t got good handwriting.

I can’t swim.

Look at these sentences

Think About ItCan you imagine the people who said these? Can you think of a sentence like these that you might say about yourself?

Page 7: There’s a magic word…

Now for the magic word…

Page 8: There’s a magic word…

…what could it be?

Page 9: There’s a magic word…

Not long now…

Page 10: There’s a magic word…

…just a bit longer…

Page 11: There’s a magic word…

…no really, it’s coming soon…

Page 12: There’s a magic word…

…the word is…

Page 13: There’s a magic word…

Yet!Admit it – are you a teensy bit disappointed?

Page 14: There’s a magic word…

Yet!

Page 15: There’s a magic word…

Seriously, this is what it does…

How has that little, tiny word totally changed these sentences?

I can’t run very far yet.

I haven’t got good handwriting yet.

I can’t swim yet.

Page 16: There’s a magic word…

What can we do?

You Can Do It!

but I can work hard to make it possible.

It might not be easy,

Adding the word 'yet’ to anything makes it possible.

All we have to do now is think about how we might achieve it.

Page 17: There’s a magic word…

Now try adding your own 'but I can' statements to transform something you thought you couldn't do into

something that is possible.

What Can We Do?

but I can try to run a bit further every day.I can’t run very far

but I can practise for five minutes every day.I haven’t got good handwriting

but I can ask an adult to take me swimming once a week.I can’t swim

Page 18: There’s a magic word…

Discuss and finish these sentences:

I don’t know how to work in schoolbut I can…

I can’t play with my friendbut I can…

I can’t play an instrumentbut I can…

Your Turn

Page 19: There’s a magic word…

1. Write three things you can't do or have trouble doing.

2. Write ‘yet’ at the end of each sentence.

3. Now write what you can do to work towards achieving your goals by adding, ‘but I can…’

4. Share your ideas if you want to.

Now You…

Page 20: There’s a magic word…

So there you have it, the magic of ‘yet’.
