GRADE 5 ENGLISH READING COMPREHENSION 1
There comes a time in every boy’s life when he suddenly has a strong desire to go somewhere and dig a hidden treasure. This desire came upon Tom Sawyer one day. He went to look for Joe but Joe failed to share this desire. Next, Tom looked for Ben but Ben went out fishing. (paragraph 1) As Tom was walking back home, he stumbled upon Huck who was all ears to Tom's idea. They went to a quiet place and discussed the matter secretly. Huck was always willing to be part of anything exciting because he was such a carefree boy. (paragraph 2) “Where will we dig?” asked Huck. “Oh, almost everywhere,” replied Tom. “Why, are treasures hidden all around?” “No. Treasures are hidden in special places. Sometimes on islands, sometimes in rotten chests under a dead old tree where the shadow falls at midnight. But most of them are hidden in haunted houses.” (paragraph 3) The last location gave Huck goose pimples but it made him even more curious to learn about finding treasures. “Who hides them?” “Robbers, of course. Who do you think? Teachers?” As they talked, they became more and more excited about treasure hunting. Both boys started to daydream what they would do with the many treasures they might find. (paragraph 4)

SECTION 1 (10 marks)
EXPLORERS - Roald Amundsen Roald Amundsen, a Norwegian, spent almost all his adult life in exploration. He was the first explorer to navigate the Northwest Passage between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans to the north of Canada. However, he is most famous for being the first person to reach the South Pole. Yet his journey to Antarctica was almost an accident. (paragraph 1)
Amundsen was 37 years old when he decided in 1909 to make an attempt to reach North Pole which at the time, no one had done. But, while he was preparing for the journey, news came that the American explorer Robert Peary had arrived at the North Pole. Amundsen secretly changed his plans, telling only his brother, and headed for the South Pole instead. He knew that a British expedition led by Robert Falcon Scott had already set out with the same aim, but travelling by a different route. He overtook the British group. Amundsen’s five-men group set out from his base camp in October 1911 on sledges drawn by huskies on what was to be an eight-week journey. On 14 December 1911, Amundsen reached the Pole and planted the flag of Norway there. He was about four weeks ahead of Scott. (paragraph 2)

SECTION 2 (14 marks)
EXPLORERS - Robert Falcon Scott Who was he?
Scott of the Antarctic is a nickname that has been given to the famous British explorer Robert Falcon Scott. From a very early age, however, he was known as “Con” (taken from the name Falcon). In late 1911 he led an expedition into unknown areas of Antarctica and wished to be the first man to stand at the South Pole. On 17 January 1912, Scott reached his destination with a group of men he chose to help him. (paragraph 1)
It’s cold there. So what do you wear? Modern polar explorers wear several layers of highly technical thermal, breathable and waterproof clothing. The fabrics used are lightweight and often very expensive. These clothes are used for sleeping too, when the explorer gets into the sleeping bag. Scott’s group had none of this. They had to wear layer on layer of sweaters with woollen hats and woollen and fur mittens. (paragraph 2)
How do you get to the South Pole? With great difficulty. Even almost a hundred years later, explorers who try to reach the South Pole on foot often face dangerous conditions, even though they have lightweight equipment and sometimes use teams of dogs to help with the load. Imagine what it must have been like for Scott and his party. They did not have a dog team and pulled the equipment themselves across the Antarctic ice. (paragraph 3)
So what did Scott find at the South Pole?
Scott himself wrote these words in his diary: “Great God! This is an awful place…” Unfortunately for Scott it was not just the place that was awful. As his team approached the Pole they saw something in the distance. They got closer and realised the terrible truth - that something was a flag of Norway. Roald Amundsen had beaten them to the South Pole! (paragraph 4)
Unfortunately, Scott and his team came across a terrible snow storm while going back. Scott managed to keep on writing letters till the end but eventually they all died in Antarctica. Their bodies were recovered eight months later. (paragraph 5)

It-Tieni Silta
Is-sajf reġa’ magħna. Dalwaqt tispiċċa l-iskola u arana ngawdu l-vaganzi tant
mixtieqa. Matul is-sena skolastika ħafna tfal jirsistu kemm jifilħu ħalli matul is-
sajf igawdu l-vaganzi kif jixraq. (par1)
Ngħid għalija matul is-sajf ikolli aktar ħin għall-qari, li tant inħobb. Peress li l-
iskola tkun magħluqa jien immur nissellef il-kotba mil-librerija tal-kunsill u xi
kultant ommi twassalni l-librerija ta’ Belt is-Sebħ biex inġib xi żewġ kotba minn
hemm ukoll. (par 2)
Għandi xi ħbieb li matul is-sajf jaħlu ħafna ħin quddiem it-telvixin jew il-
kompjuter u ftit li xejn jaqraw jew jagħmlu reviżjoni. Jaħasra ma jafux li min
jorqod ma jaqbadx ħut. (par 3)
Għalkemm il-qari nħobbu ħafna, meta nkun qed naqra mhux dejjem nifhem
kollox imma dejjem insib lil xi ħadd jispjegali dak li ma nkunx fhimt, wara kollox
il-mistoqsija oħt il-għerf u meta nistaqsi nitgħallem aktar. (par 4)
Fis-sajf insib ukoll il-ħin biex immur il-baħar naqbeż qabża ma’ sħabi jew mal-
familja tiegħi. Tgħidx kemm inħobb nogħdos u nħares lejn il-qiegħ permezz tal-
maskla. (par 5)
Nannti toqgħod biss kantuniera bogħod minna u għalhekk matul is-sajf jiena
mmur naraha aktar spiss. Xi kultant immur nagħmlilha xi qadja u drabi oħra
noqogħdu nieħdu xi ftit te bil-biskuttelli u hi erħilha tirrakkonta xi storja minn
tfulitha. (par 6)
Is-sajf l-ieħor qaltli li meta ħuha l-kbir emigra lejn l-Awsralja tgħidx kemm
bkewh u minn mindu telaq qatt ma reġa ġie lura. ‘Laħqu mietu ommi u missieri
u qatt ma laħaq ġie jarahom’ kienet tgħidli filwaqt li tagħmel wiċċ ta’ waħda
mnikkta. ‘ Sewwa jgħidu li bogħod mill-għajn bogħod mill-qalb għax donnu
nsiena kompletament.’ (par 7)
9 minn 16
Is-sajf li ġej biħsiebni mmur aktar spiss għand in-nanna u ngħin aktar fix-xogħol
tad-dar ħalli meta ommi u missieri jiġu lura mix-xogħol ikollhom aktar ħin għall-
mistrieħ u b’hekk inkunu nistgħu ngawdu ’l xulxin aktar waqt il-vaganzi. Hekk
jew b’hekk issa qed nikber u ma m’għandix nibqa’ nistenna lill-ġenituri jagħmlu
kollox għalija imma hemm bżonn nara ftit x’nista’ nagħmel jien għalihom.
