Commodore Perry was an officer in the US navy during the War of 1812. He is known as the “Hero of Lake Erie” because of his courageous leadership during the Battle of

Perry’s flagship the Lawrence was disabled during the battle and he had to transfer his crew to the Niagara The transfer his crew to the Niagara. The Niagara sailed into action and defeated the British fleet.Six vessels in Perry’s fleet, including theNiagara were built in Erie. A reconstructed US Brig Niagara can be seen at Erie’s Maritime Museum.
